Do you have any tips for adding tension to progressions, to then release later? My music theory is not great and I end up trying to stick to "perfect" triads and so on, which leaves my music feeling very vanilla. The more I try to learn the more theory feels like a creative prison.
On my experience music theory is a creativity booster. For instance, check out diminished chords, they are very high tension sounding and perfect to resolve in the main chord. For instance, on C major, B is a diminished chord. Play it before C and it resolves amazingly. That can be don with any other chord too, not necessarily the one of the scale
