With all your love for classical music, it is criminal that you aren't watching Navarasm by Thaikuddam Bridge. It is absolutely brilliant fusion of Carnatic and rock.
And the instrument that Patri plays is the Mridangam
There was a recent tamil movie Sarvam Tala Mayam (everthing is rhythm) which was about a Mridangam player and his life. Nice movie.
React to Kadri Gopal Nath, he recently passed away
Such a great musician
love that instrument
that instrument is pakhawaj not mridangam.
Ramesh Kumar Sharma Patri Satish Kumar plays the mridangam. He does not play the pakhawaj
This is like a rap battle.
If it were a performance on its own it would have been called the 'Jugalbandi'

There have only been a few musicians in history than are called ustad. The masters of their instrument. He is one of them.
Intern Creamery Pandit and Ustad are the same level. Pandit is usually addressed to Hindu musicians while Ustad is addressed to Muslim musicians
Ustads are musicians who have mastered their skill and have knowlege enough to impart it to others. It is usually given to muslim musicians. The equivalent of a Ustad in Hindus is Pandit like Pandit Ravishankar, Pandit Ajay Chakraborty, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, etc, Ustad Bismillah khan.

Indian classical music is written differently.
But like Rick said even here we change beats (all in instruments-by playing, singing-by singing faster and in dancing ( by dancing faster)
They are called as ek gun ( multiplied by one), do gun ( multiplied by two), then multiplied by 3,4,8 and so on.
The different Indian taals ( the written beats) are of different lengths. Some are of 6 beats, some 8, some 12, some 16 and longer. So saying the multiply thing works when you double, triple, quadraple speeds.
Also the speeded up compositions are not written. You do the calculations and decide which places you have to sing faster, which place you have to start and which place you have sing slower etc since you have to complete your piece within a complete rotation of the taal
For example, if it's a taal of 7 beats. Your compostion can be of 7, 14, 28, 56 etc beats and so on.
Indian classical singing is improve. In vocal, we only have the usually the small body itself. All the modulations, singing taans, notes etc the singer adds by themselves. It's actually quite interesting 🙊
When we learn classical music along with singing we also had to learn the theory of music ( very different from western system I think. I know Indian classical system-music and some Kathak so I don't know about percussion instruments though), our teachers used to give us homeworks to make our own taans ( musical note composition)
Taans are interesting. As in one raaga you can use only some note progressions. Every raaga is unique in terms of how the scale goes from up and down, some times some notes are missing in the raaga, some notes are used in their soft or sharm version, some notes come after certain other notes and so on and while doing your work you have to keep all that in mind and improve.
It's like freehand but with a lot of conditions🙊
Didn't get most of the thing you said, sorry for being a music dumbo, but wanted to feel knowledgeable thus liked your comment.😅
@@phosdk you're so kind haha 😁
Nice explanation... I sometimes think I should write all these but I am not expert and I can make mistakes so I don't write... Beauty of Indian classical music is practice and making music intuitive rather than writing... 😅

Patri Satish Kumar is a Diamond of Mridangam = percussion instrument. A living legend.
True. He is a Master! My respects to him!
Tabla and Mridangam! Carnatic and Hindustani in one. Such beauty 😃
exactly 😍😍
Indian music is not written out. Indian musicians do not read music. The traditional teaching method is oral. They learn by rote and by imitating the teacher.
Basic is written... Yeah oral teaching is done but knowing the basic is to know the written building block of any Bol for Tabla or any Raag
For vocal I have seen some writing.. but they are different ..like bahirav raga .. I do not know if I'm correct..
chaitanya Loll Yes you are right. Vocal is taught both through oral and writing.
@@chaitanyaloll9183 yeah well every raag is different with different notes... N it is particular.. if u say a Raag like Bhairav.. u have to know the notes.. which had been written long back..
Tabla rhythms are written out. There's two styles of writing it. "Bhatkhande" style and "paluskar" style. The multiplication of the beats in terms of 16-32-64-128 has to be written out and properly represented in both tabla and vocals in Indian classical music.
This is called "Jugalbandi" which literally means "entwined twins. Its a duet and can be either vocal or instrumental. They try and one up/challenge each other. Zakir Hussain was asking Patri Satish Kumar to and and copy his tunes...
Tabla is not an instrument for Zakir Hussain, he himself is Tabla!

@@TanayLuthra Tabla notes are called as Bol (बोल)
I love this kind of reaction
Fun fact- The technique of mapping and writing down musical notes on paper was first created in India.
Woaah thats pretty cool
True
Nothing is written in indian music.... It's all oral..... And improvised❤❤
Interesting... 🧐🦵💪😑
Writing format is mostly in the languages (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu etc).. the beats r different.. not just multiples of 4.. TAAL is the written beats of various lengths.. can be multiples of 8(Kaharwa), 12(Ektaal), 16(Teentaal), 6(Daadra) n numerous others.
The eastern music is written differently, however, it does have similar notational features to what you mentioned for western music. In Tabla, each 'Taal' has a fixed number of base units (called 'matra'), which can be played at 2x, 3x, 4x, 6x, 8x...etc speeds. Playing at multiples of 3 (3x,6x,9x..) is comparatively difficult than playing at multiples of 2 (2x,4x,8x,16x). Tabla has various compositions like 'Kayda', 'Rela', etc which are integral multiples of those base units of a 'Taal' and hence when one begins the composition at the beginning of a 'Taal', it should automatically end at the end of multiples of those base units (assuming the player is skilled in his time sense).
I am unfamiliar with the terminology used in western music, that's why tried to state the stuff as it is (without using the appropriate terminologies)
Pranav Kulkarni I was going to write this but glad to see that you wrote this 5 month back

Zakirji isn't thinking in that moment. I can attest to that. I've seen him live and been to his workshops. What's even more impressive, though, is his ability to retain and recollect EXACTLY what he just played literally off the top of his head, hours, days, or even weeks later - AND THEN TEACH IT.
He's Dave Chappell of tabla. Dave didn't need matter for stand up comedy. He is the Matter.
The fun fact is that even if you bang the Tabla, you won't even generate half the sound Zakir Hussain generates. It takes incredible technique.
That one damn disliker😂😂

I have had the good fortune of watching Zakir Hussain live and I kid you not he's unbelievable. He makes it look ridiculously easy. It's almost as if his fingers are gliding smoothly on the tabla. Ultimate legend 🙌👌
The thing both of the people were doing is called 'Jugal-bandi' .. thats the way 2 classical musicians aquaint to each other while performing live... Also its a test of strength but in a respectful way.. that only those doing jugalbandi can understand.
The other instrument is called 'Mri-dan-gam' its dia is short on one side produces sharp sound.. the other side has larger dia producing bass sound.
This kind of back and forth is done in between concerts, mostly when it is an ensemble of great artists but the focus is on one person (in this case the vocal singer). It is usually called Jugalbandi means, literally, "entwined twins. It is done especially in Hindustani classical music, but also in Carnatic that features a duet of two solo musicians. It thus gives an opportunity for the 'supporting artists' to steal the spotlight for some time, and then the focus goes back the lead performer.
it is usually in-situ performance and is not practised where the artists move in and out of well known thalas (rhythms) while adding their on changes to it.
That was a great Jugalbandi between a Tabla and a Mrudangam... 😍😍😍😍
I saw this live... I was very young and obviously didn't realize the depth of the music that I heard then.😂
Watching it now gives me goosebumps

The way we write notations in Indian Classical music is different, we do have a pattern to show the quarters, the 8's and 16's etc, different markings are done. But notations are not always written, many prefer not to write them but sometimes for ease they are written, so there is a specific technique of writing notations and not just one technique, there are different methods of writing notations for Indian Music under different "Schools of Music" or "Gharanas"

In Indian music there are 7 main soors or frequencies (like octaves in Western music). They are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni .
Then these are just extended on either sides by increasing or decresing the freqeuncies.
Thus Indian music is written in these basic frequencies.
For percussion instruments there are other ways of writing. E.g. for tabla its Dha Tin Dhin Tirkit Na ....
You guys have huge respect on our legends and it's quiet evident in your reaction - "which makes us feel proud of you guys". Love you both..❣️✌️
The intro is too funny!😂 and the variety of things and sounds you guys can do is incredible!!! I love the intros!
Fun fact 101--Tabla is a instrument that was created by dividing the other instrument (dholak) which satish kumar used is a type of dholak; by cutting in half of a traditional dholak you get tabla one drum and the other one which are both tuned differently
It’s a mridangam, not a dholak.
There's amazing 7.47 min video of 8 tabla players playing in unison at the birth centenary celebration of Ustad Allah Rakha, Zakir Hisain's Dad. Please react to that. Its titled , *Birth centenary of ustad allarakha khasab. The Tabla maestros All together*

Its the first time i am watching his work.. Only becoz of u.. Thnks guys for opening the window of his work for me..
I am not a classical musician but I can tell you one thing that the Indian classical music always have *SAAT SWARA*( meaning the seven swara ) in the base of every Melody and the swara is-
1- Sa.
2-Re..
3-Ga....
4-Ma......
5-Pa.........
6-Dha............
7-Ni.................
And one more thing
Anyone who master those seven swara are called the "Ustaad"
You have to checkout Ustad Zakir Hussain playing with the Mridangam Maestro Sri Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, who is a living legend who was the one who announced Zakir Hussain as Ustad on stage. He has been playing Mridangam since his age of 5 and now he is 80+ of age.
Sir do you have that video? I always wanted to see both of the legends playing together
The expression on Ustad Zakir Hussain's face are as much enjoyble as the 'Tabla' ...
Thanks to UA-cam otherwise most of us common people would only here the names and couldn't ever watch how amazingly these legends play those instrument.
Awww..I wish it was a longer video of the performance..both of them were awesome!!
You must watch Shri B hari kumar playing mridangam , his mridangam sounds like a roaring lion in "kadri gopalnath vol 2". ❤️🙏
Indian Classical Music can be written down using octaves (different from western octaves - “do re me fa so la ti do” vs “sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa”)
But tabla has its own language. I learned tabla for a few years, it takes years to master.
Rick is absolutely right about the rhythm cycles known as “taal”s (can be any number of beats, most common are 16, 10, 8, 6) and also correct about the multiplication of beats that creates the speed. It’s called the mathematics of tabla.
Also any composition for sitar, sarod, flute or even songs are written according to a taal to be played using tabla.
Here is so many different world's in India like this🙏😎 thanks for reacting guys, love from India 😘👍

Only crime is - this video ends.
I wish I could like this reaction multiple times. I’m learning to play the keyboard and Rick’s knowledge on music theory makes so much sense.
Having watched at least 95% of all your videos, I can say that this was among the best reactions on your channel thus far. 💕👏
It is due the depths of classical music and masters of such musical genius that many in India here consider Hip-Hop and Rap music to be an Inferior/Lazy Art form....
'Horse racing' video and stuff like thay is for layman listeners. They usually do that for audience that doesnt know intricacies of their art. They put it in some format that's relatable to them, like horse running, or a train etc. He is far more capable than this. His skill here is just a teaser.
Thank you for this comment! As impressive as this is, it’s not the real ability of either artist. You need to have a deep understanding of rhythm to be able to appreciate the pauses as opposed to just manic speed!
Satish went to a battle with the maestro Zakir !!! Incredible. loved it. And those electrified fingers of Zakir wow...
Loved Rick and Korbin's reaction on this video - I love the fact that Rick has musical background and profound understanding and appreciation for Music. I enjoyed Rick's explanation on notes and tempo!
Thats why he is a USTAD,this man has definitely attained ultra instinct
You are watching one of the worlds oldest music instruments indian leart these from vedic text (samveda) which are around 2000years old.
The beats you said is universal but graphical representation is pure western.
Tabla has Many taal(claps)
So snap is western version of it. Our ancestors tried all possible combination of taals in these specific instruments.
You can see some cave and temple has 4th-5th CE sculpture with Mridangam (same instrument patri playing in video) flute , damru etc.
While clapping master can use hand gestures too to control tempo etc. As modern master gives instruction to orcastra.
Usually they use verbal beats with claps combination to understand for beginners. We still use this technique in bollywood songs.
No notes required. You have to learn beats verbally and play it on instrument.
It improves your listening power. Which is necessory for a true musician to identify different chords and pattern and tempo without notes.
I was present at this event in Moodbidri. The whole audience was hypnotized during this jugalbandi 🙌🏼

Indian classical music has notations just like western classical music except it is not written, it oral and memorized by the musicisns. The tabla or other percussion instruments have notations as well, which the tabla player may vocalize before playing. The tabla has predefined beats (taals) which may vary from 4 to 16, have different divisions like 4+4+4+4 or 3+4+3+4, and different tempos...It's all very structured. The improvisation happens within the boundaries of the predefined structure....BTW: love your reactions to indian classical music.
