- I want to talk to you this week about when inspiration strikes. I share with you a moment where inspiration struck as I was walking outside on a sunny day in my neighborhood. I created a painting that was design-driven, versus subject-driven. After watching how I made this painting, I encourage you to do the same.

This is such a wonderful illustration of what design-driven painting really means!
Thanks so much Rafael
Love it! I don’t think I would ever have thought the view would make such a great painting…….but….I get it!!! The design is all. Thank you. I shall be going out and about with new eyes!!!!!
Thank you, Ian for this design driven beautiful demo. Your videos are always very inspirational.
My pleasure Kamlesh. Thank you and all the best.
Clear, simple, and genius! Thank you, Ian ❤️
You're very welcome Nataly
Ian, your channel is pure gold! Thank you!
That is kind of you to say. Thank you
GREAT reminder of simplicity! light, dark, warm, cool, large, small
Glad you liked it Jennifer!
Your delivery in these video's is just lovely. Very easy to understand what you're trying to say. Thanks
Love the composition. Balance between mass and void is a topic that is almost never addressed by art channels
Mass and void, that’s a new one for me. Is this kind of like… positive vs negative space?
@@Ratswithshivs Yeah, kind of... I find that empty spaces add drama to landscape paintings
Thank you Anibal. Glad you found it interesting
Do you do live workshops?
@@anibalsantanderjeria6420 that’s awesome. I’m going to try that with my figurative paintings
Mine eyes now see. Your work now informs my current acceleration in technical growth. It's so exciting to be moving forward so satisfyingly. Thankyou Sir
Love this painting Mr Roberts. I wish you were my mentor! How you simplified this big painting beautiful, really inspiring how it came together thank you !

Great!!!👍👍👍
Thank you very much Adrian
I loved the painting Mr. Roberts. Beautiful reading of light and shadow, if I may say it...
A perfect example of less is more. I always find your videos extremely helpful.
Glad to hear that. Thanks Mark.
Powerful words. I absolutely love this painting!! Thanks for inspiring us and producing these amazing videos.
You are so welcome Norma. Thank you for watching
"the same value shift and color shift..." that, dear Watson, I think may be the key to color harmony.
That is a big one for getting the sense of sunlight.
Awesome, couldn't believe my eyes, big shapes, simple details and tá da!!!... Every time you post a new video... I'm right there to see it... always learning from you!!! thanks!!!
Thank you so much Meire.
Thank you very much for giving vision to us for watching composition in surrounding areas ,
Thank you for "sharing your eyes". I needed that. You have motivated me to return to my sketching project "1,000 days of Designing the Picture Plane" -- a project inspired by your challenge in your classic book "Mastering Composition". Your videos apply equally well to my en plein air work in watercolours.
That sounds like a great project. Well done. Good luck and all the best.
Fabulous lesson - and as always i love the ways of seeing that you talk about! thankyou for sharing!
Thank you Shruti! You're very welcome
Ian....fabulous lesson on "design driven" photos/paintings....im always looking for "subject" matter...your suggestion for the former will break down the complexity of "inspiration" into simpler terms....
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience to us...a true teacher gives his/her students tools to use as they continue on their creative journey..You are that person!!
Thanks so much Joseph. Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. All the best.
That is very kind of you to say. Thank you Joseph
Such a joy to watch your work. After your videos have begun to appreciate shadows and light ever so much thanks
You are so welcome Sabiha. Delighted you found it helpful
Always look forward to first Tuesday of the month ! Thank you
Thanks so much Kathy
Very cool, love the simplicity and composition. Very contemporary.
Thank you. I look forward to your videos.
Glad to hear that. Thank you Ludwig
I so admire your technique and appreciate all the tips to give. I am a figurative artist and live in the Languedoc. I am ashamed I have not yet got to grips with painting Landscapes. But I am inspired by your videos, you are brilliant!
Thank you so much. Go out there and have some fun.
I love your ideas and your work. You are a spiritual inspiration for me. You have the ability to see the beauty of life in little things. Thank you for sharing. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

Representational meets abstract - beautiful piece for its simplicity and lovely colour that sing together.
Many thanks Mike
I feel like I'm beginning to "get it"!! As soon as I can get back to my easel, I must practice this design concept on my own large canvasses! Thank you, Ian!!

Don't stop now! You've got the shapes, values, temperature, etc. as your foundation. Just like you did with the marigolds, add some variation/texture to those big flat lifeless areas of grass.
This may be my favorite of all your videos. Thanks for your inspiration!
Great to hear Terri.
Wow ! My jaw literally dropped when I saw your finished painting !! Simply amazing ! It is absolutely beautiful and just makes my heart smile ! Thank you ever so much Robert for these instances where I am just blown away with something that might look simple to some , but to me it rocks all my senses ! I am so grateful and appreciate your teaching and art. Wishing you and your lovely wife Anne all the best of health and happiness. Warmest regards....Lorraine 🥰🤗🎨
Thanks so much Lorraine. Thanks for letting me know you liked the painting.
You are so inspiring! I do botanical painting with watercolour and yet I love your paintings. I'm going to go out and see if I can take a picture with strong shadows as you have done today and see if I can make sense of it with watercolour - that's how inspired you make me!!!!
That's great Anne.
I cut off my huge marigold "bushes" today.. They were getting covered in snow and of course the frost had already killed them. I collected over a qt of seeds from these. I have many photos of them. The lowly marigold is so lovely when the light is right... never really thought to paint them... I typically work in watercolor, gouache, but yeah I think I would like to use oil. I like the dramatic design.... Painting process was so fun to watch. EDIT: oh yes and one of my favorite things to do is to paint negatively around things... Typically I do this with gouache or casein, which provides a nice soft contrast to the transparency of the water color with which I typically start. ... Never a shortage of subject matter... ( P.S. I have your composition book - -- which I love! )
Love it. Reminds me of old college days and photography classes. We were always instructed to look for shadows and light lights and dark darks. Thank you. This is beautiful.
Thanks Susan. Glad you liked it.
That painting seemed to come to life very quickly
I really appreciate this lesson. And I love your idea about just going out and looking for big shapes in composition. Thank you for the inspiration.
You are so welcome Sherri.
Such a successful painting!!
I really get the ENERGY of your initial excitement of discovering that view carried into the painting process and it is just a joy to look at, thank you for sharing yet another brilliant video! ☺️☺️☺️

So inspiring!! The beautiful designs we can find….thanks again Ian
You are welcome Joann.
I picked up the brush, not image painting but miniature painting (like in wargame miniatures). I love the therapeutic and calming effect of this kind of activity.
Sounds like you're on to something. Thanks for watching Thomas.
Thank you Ian, you make art feel so simple and doable! I will learn with practice to paint big shapes alone and not get so carried away in the details!
You are welcome Maria and enjoy the journey. All the best
Luscious painting! I love the design and am happy you made a video describing your process. Thank you.

Hi, it gives me joy to watch you playing around with your colour strokes! Thanks Ian.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
Thank you for this!
Love your videos. I like doing pen and ink and watercolour. I like drawing people. Haven't done landscape or oil paints for some decades but you have inspired me to have a go. Really look forward to the videos. Learnt a lot about sunlight and shadow. Thanks.
That is great, Pat. I hope your brushworks are light and free. All the best.
This is a fun visual that beautifully illustrates the point you are making. I understand it much better now. I’m on the wait list for your 2024 Mastering Composition. My goal is to follow along this year to gain a strong foothold for the real thing. Thank you.
Delighted you enjoyed the video Susan and also that you plan to take the courses next year. With best wishes.
You have pointed out many times, seeing abstract design in the composition. It is a good mindset to work from
Thank you Lindsay
Love, love, love this painting!
Thanks so much
You make it look so easy but that's years of experience that's gone into your thought process
It is true, a lot of it is the thinking behind the painting. All the best.
Thank you very much for sharing your ideas and thought process. I love your painting
You are so welcome Maria. Thank you
As always, very captivating and beautiful....thank you !
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it Franco
Perfect 🙏

You're very welcome Albertina
Dear Mr. Ian Roberts,
Excellent work.
Very interesting. You're great.
Thank you for sharing demo.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you Avinash
Probably sounds nerdy, but it’s such a thrill to lay down those last strokes of light color that contrast with the shadows.
I find it really satisfying when those two colors nail the sense of light and shadow. Is that nerdy? All the best.
That’s a cracking job 👍
Wow, I really loved this experience/example of design driven painting. Thanks. Heading out tomorrow with my camera. I can't do open air it's -20C. But I'm so inspired to try this tomorrow on a walk and then at home in studio. And I just love that humble marigolds and lawn grass/hedges formed the shapes and colors/values that became the star of this design show! Great teaching!
Hope you got some great photos Jennifer. All the best.
A very dramatic and dynamic composition. Great example.
Thanks so much Gary
Thanks so much Ian! I love to see how you did this. It’s a great example of how to do something quickly, and not to get bogged down in the details.
Glad you enjoyed it. Exactly. Thank you Erin.
Excellent demo. Fab painting. Thank you!
Many thanks
Thank you for this clear instruction. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
If that doesn’t motivate us to paint and get out walking nothing will! Great video.
Thanks Maxine
Great focus on design. We have snow this morning so lots of contrasts so will keep my eyes open for design
Thank you Lee
I have a photo with really strong evening shadows...I think I will paint it and try and complete in one go with out fussing over it. Thanks for the inspiration of this video.
Good luck with it Dianne.

Thank you Simonne
Yep, I can relate to your experience. Quite often, when I'm outside walking or visiting somewhere, I'll be asking myself questions like "How would I paint that?" or "What colours would I use?" or "How could I achieve that effect?" Sadly, I did n't always have my phone with me.
Glad you could relate to this video
❤ Thanks for your knowledge sharing… very informative.
glad you liked it. Thank you
Another beauty
Thanks so much Marcia
Love this video. Love your paintings. May be a while before the sun comes out in Minnesota!
