Journey to the West is a great (though very long) novel. It also went on to influence Dragon Ball.
Later, it got adapted into an incredible show called 'Monkey' in the 70's that was hugely popular in Australia through the 90's.

There's also The New Adventures of Monkey on Netflix, as well as the anime Gensoumaden Saiyuki (also known as just Saiyuki, or its later seasons Saiyuki Reload.) There was even a PS1 RPG called Saiyuki. This public domain fantasy is the gift that keeps on giving with games based on it still releasing to this day.

I have always been interested in the "Monkey King" lore, but I have never read Journey to the West, I will do my best to get the book and read it. The 70's show will also be in my list.

It seems to loom large in the imagination of Japanese creators, while being mostly unknown outside of Asia. Bowser is based on a character from it, for example.

To say the first game is only „inspired“ by Wonderboy 2 seems a bit understated. ;-)

This was a Blockbuster rental for me (but a good one!). I don't think I ever actually beat this game back in the day but I liked the gameplay and the graphics were nice. The music tracks were short but I liked most of them. I also liked the Native American vibe some of the songs had.

As NES Friend said, "Saiyuuki World" is actually a port of the SEGA title "Wonder Boy in Monster Land" with all of the original characters swapped with characters from "Journey to the West" and a modified story. NMK developed the Famicom port, but Jaleco handled the sequel and western localization with their own dev team directly (and from what I've heard here, that seems to be a good thing). I highly recommend playing "Wonder Boy in Monster Land" over the first "Saiyuuki World" if you can, but bear in mind that game was originally designed to be a coin munching arcade game.
Good work on the video, NES Friend!
I should probably pick up an EverDrive at some point...

Why read Journey to the West when you can play it? Saiyuki is a PS1 Strategy RPG, while Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is an action game for PS3/360. Both are highly underrated, although the PS1 game is the closest to the actual novel.

It's a shame that Saiyuki World II ended up with such an unfortunate localization, it actually looks like a lot of fun.
The weirdest thing is, I'm pretty sure that Dragon Power had already released in the US at this point, which infamously turns Goku back into his Monkey King inspiration, they really could have released it as "Monkey King Adventure" and changed nothing
