Rathbone and Bruce were both World War 1 veterans - Bruce permanently wounded and Rathbone was refused when he tried to re-enlist at the start of WW2. (He was more valuable to Britain in these films. Note the admiration of the Capitol quoting Churchill in the closing scene of this one.)
Sherlock Holmes was deductively brilliant, but often Watson had some seemingly irrelevant impressionistic - inductive - observation that helped clinch Holmes' deduction.
More could have been made of that, with a shot of Watson then having a sly, satisfied expression in his eyes.

The barman in the train scenes is Clarence Muse. He does a lot more with that tiny role than most actors could. Muse, a law-school dropout, became an actor, singer, director and songwriter. His best known song is "When It;s Sleepy Time Down South". His final appearance was in a film released on his 90th birthday -- the day after his death.

Murder, terror, treachery and espionage was dark. Having Watson add some levity to the films 🎥 made the moviegoers forget their worries 😟 at the time. Lightening the mood.
