Fun fact! The first draft of the Jumper Script was apparently much more faithful to the book, before Doug Liman said, "Interesting... let's change this that and the other thing." Almost like he didn't know it even *had* a source material. By the time they were ready to shoot, the whole thing had been planned out as a trilogy of movies, with this one solely existing to set up the other two (something you should only do when filming them simultaneously, otherwise you risk not getting your sequels greenlit, and leaving one dorky little hangnail of a movie as your franchise's only legacy).
They weren't done there, though. According to Jamie Bell (who holds the distinction of being the only remaining cast member after the film was scrapped and recast) he had been given at least 12 vastly different rewrites of the script since he'd signed on to play Griffin. Even then, he himself was very badly juggled around by the production, as evidenced by his five minute on set rant in the bonus features, as well as a clip of the producer patting him on the shoulder and saying, "Don't worry. Tomorrow, we'll try and find something to do with you."
The author himself was still a good sport about the whole thing though, and even wrote a spinoff novel set in the film's universe called "Jumper: Griffin's Story" (as was pointed out in the review.) However, I doubt he was all that keen on the film as in the behind the scenes featurette "Jumping From Book to Screen" he referenced James M. Cain's famous quote about Hollywood ruining his books: "They didn't ruin anything. My books are right there on the shelf. They're fine."
I recommend reading some of Rick Riorden's emails from the time he had his books adapted to the big screen. The snark is very strong with that one

I'm gonna get hate for this. Even though you pointed out the problems in the movie, I still enjoy watching it.
However, you definitely got me interested in reading the book.
I also really liked the movie! Action, special effects, powers and how they used them in fights as well in heist. That is the movie that ignited my love for power of teleportation - "I'm going for a breakfast in france and then i'm going to read a book on the head of the sphynx".
And the fact they leave scars like there really was a wormhole there... how they can stack up shortjumps to gain momentum, awesome!
Him teleporting to "stack up momentum" is pretty pointless, to the point of being counter productive. In the books Davy/David experiments with his ability and discovers he retains no momentum between a jump (e.g. He jumps off a cliff, drops for a second or two, then jumps back to the top, still in open space, but hangs for a second before gravity pulls him back down again.)
The third book really delves into that aspect of his ability, and depending on when it came out the director may have even pulled this technique from there as their executions are similar.
Definitely read the book. I saw the movie first and thought it was painful. Then i found the book (in my library, ironically) and thought "how bad is the book?"
Now i'm in love with the book series and try to read everything by the author. The difference is like comparing I, Frankenstein the movie to Frankenstein the book: they have a similar name, i guess? But they're so different they're even in different genres... The Jumper book is gritty, grounded, and can be a slow burn for some. Even the ending feels kind of unresolved and realistic (as much as a book about teleporting can be :)
@@bladetytan9025 Well we know Griffin has already figured out how to maintain (and maybe add) momentum between jumps like Cent does in the later books because he's jumping a car around as it's driving.
@@MrRtkwe Been awhile, but i think the part i was talking about is his teleport-charge punch he does during one of the fight scenes, if he was doing it to generate momentum it's pointless. One jump is all that would be needed, Jump in front of his target and add x momentum in y direction at his target, done.
Also, with the car scene, iirc when Griffin Jumps the car in the air i don't think it carries on moving, he Jumps it up and it hangs there before he jumps it back down somewhere else.
This point is countered by the fact that the car carries on moving fine after landing as the wheels should likely spin a bit before regaining traction. (Might not, i'm not sure about the physics of traction in that scenario.)

@Mr. TAD Yeah, but he is just a one guy. I know he stole alot for a one guy, but he is still just a one guy. I doubt he could ever steal as much to cause this kind of problem, since even his luxury life is quite inexpensive, in the grand scheme of things.

I read the book years before the movie came out. I legitimately had this thought while reading it, “they should make this into a movie. Wait no, they shouldn’t they couldn’t get away with this in a movie.”
Had similar thoughts reading the Dune books series, was such a great movie in my mind but I thought, 'they can never really do a good movie with that book, it's really all in the books and the mind'.

This is the only film I've ever seen (in the theater) that truly disappointed me, and I'd never even heard of the book or knew this was based on one. Also Jamie Bell is the best thing about this movie.

It's nice to hear a critique of this terrible movie that doesn't just extend to "Hayden Christensen can't act." Oddly enough, his performance is one of the few saving graces of this film for me. He actually looked like he was having fun in the role and is thus the only reason to maybe possibly think about watching clips of this movie...Someday.
The book sounds way better, I may check it out someday.

Yondu wasn't abusive though--at least, not compared to Ego. Also, love the use of "Super...you know the rest" in piano when he was introduced.
He was abusive, but it wasn't entirely his fault. All he knew in his life was abuse and he didn't really know what a loving parent looked like.

(youll have to forgive the lack of enters/ spaces between the paragraph 's in this in this response. for some reason my computer doesn't save them in my youtube comments) I wouldn't say that's 100% true. even in the first GOTG movie we see Yondu threaten and bully quill hell he even slaps him a few times. and even in GOTG 2 we see there is a disconnect in Yondus actions and words , quill says right to his face that he was often frightened of Yondu growing up. For example Quill: You threatened to eat me Yondu: that was funny Quill: it wasn't to me and you can see how surprised Yondu was to hear this, he never even conceded that outcome. the thing with abuses is that they don't often see themselves as abusers, they like all people rationalize their actions. I making this person stronger, I'm better than the alternative. If I didn't do this this person would fail so I have to do it. so on and so on. just because Yondu didn't give quill to Ego, doesn't really mean he all that much better. yes quill forgave Yondu at the end and quill himself is what we would call an unreliable source of information but we cant help be see the damage Yondu's kind of 'parenting' had on quill. and we see the same kind of abusive relationship between Thanos and Gamora its even worse there as Thanos truly believes he's the hero of his own story so everything he's done to Gamora, Neblua and the other's is justified in his mind. in fact now that I think of it Quill, rocket and Gamora were all products of abusive relationship's. Quill had Yondu, rocket had whom ever turned him into rocket and Gamora had Thanos
The movie is definitely one big 'blah' but Griffin is a magnificent bastard. I like how they make it a point that he's willing to accept David because he's a fellow jumper but he's still a major psychopath and won't hesitate to kill David if he gets in his way. Wish we got more of him.

So did I. David, as presented in this movie, was a genuinely horrible person with no regard for the lives of others, and Samuel L. Jackson was doing the world at large a service by putting a stop to his dangerous irresponsibility.

That is why the movie made him a religious Zealot. It was afraid the viewers would not understand he was supposed to be the bad guy if he was an Interpol agent or a bounty hunter hired by banks wanting their money back.
@@schwarzerritter5724 Talk about messing up when you can't even deliver to the viewer who's the good guy and who's the bad ;) It's one thing when it's characters in the grey area and the viewers are supposed to make their own decision, but that's not the case here, it's just a fail.

Scott Summers It’s because the movie did such a horrible job at characterization and setting up the conflict.
The only two Jumpers we get to know are unrepentant thieves who endanger and kill others without remorse. Griffin likely killed two people and endangered dozens more from just his on-screen car stunts, plus he threatened to leave Millie to die on Everest just because she was involuntarily brought to his lair. Who knows how many other people he’s killed through carelessness or to cover up carelessness? David, despite his claim about not being a killer, likely killed Roland by stranding him in that cave; it’s unlikely Roland could have escaped on his own. That’s the third on-screen time he abandoned someone in an inaccessible location. He could easily have killed several people like that.
These two men are menaces to society. The Paladins’ methods are absolutely extreme, yet all evidence we were given points to their motivations - protecting the world from super powered criminals - being sound. Given how Jumpers need to be contained by electrocuting them, the alternative to killing them would be years or even a lifetime of torture. The Paladins may have viewed death as the more merciful option. All in all, even if we disagree with how they complete their mission, it’s still not hard to root for them.
I think the movie could have cleared this up by just showing us one Jumper who wasn’t an unrepentant criminal. What if a Jumper really had come to save people from that flood, only to get caught and executed by the Paladins? It could even have been that Jumper we saw Roland shank near the start of the movie. This would have properly demonstrated that the Paladins are executing innocent people simply for possessing ability, regardless of whether that ability is used responsibly.
I love limited, seemingly unimpressive abilities in books and seeing authors come up with cool ways to use them.

Hey don’t forget that there is now a UA-cam show called Impulse. Based in the Jumper universe that doesn’t once reference David or Millie and just rolls with new characters and that show actually is really good but I would have loved if they had filled the source material and had created a jumper tv show which I think would have worked out better
Can we admit that skywalker's acting is kinda on point in this film. When his mom showed up in the room, the surprise, and fear are clear as day and he doesn't need to say anything.

i think i was a freshman when i watched the movie, and my naive young mind was too entranced in the action scenes and the fantasy of teleportation to see all that was wrong with it. i'm kind of glad though because if I hadn't liked the movie so much I probably never would have decided to read the book a few years later, it became one of my favorites.
but like who wouldn't want to pick jubilee? ignoring the fact that she was a kick as vampire for a while, her "lame" mutant power gives her the ability to explode sub atomic-particles and create immense chain reactions capable of leveling buildings and potentially worlds. her little light shows are plasma nukes, she can make nuclear explosions that do not emit harmful radiation. in practice she has caused people holding hostages to explode without harming the hostages, how is that not a rank A power?

The premise, the action, and Jamie Bell as Griffin were the best part of this movie. While I like this movie for the most part, I hope they do a remake in the future that explores the premise a little better. It would benefit from a remake.

That spin-off book Griffin's Story is actually pretty good, though I might be biased since I read it before the original book. I think that's that sign of a good author. Hollywood makes a horrible movie 'based' off your book. Then you write a pretty good book 'based' on the horrible movie.

You know the whole idea that Roland is the good guy seems pretty legit. David and Griffin are assholes through and through. David stole millions of dollars and clearly had no regard for anyone he stole from. Milly and his mom are exceptions because he likes them. Griffin is very reckless with powers and we know he’s killed an innocent indirectly. The dude is clearly not in the right mind. Roland however has good reason to fear Jumpers and their powers.
This is all absolutely correct. I could not stand this movie at all for the simple fact that it expected me to empathize with a character I hated.
When Michael Rooker was first mentioned I said to myself it would be funny if he reference the "i'm marry poppins yall" moment from guardians. Low and behold, Bravo! 🤣

Oh and i didn't know Tom Holland was in the movie lol.
There's a feature on the DVD that's a animated comic about a still teenage David jumping to his mother's childhood home town in Conneticut to find where she is by stealing town records and birth certificates, only to attract the attention of the town's sheriff (who believes David is a crazed stalker) and a paladin who was sent to deal with thing, the sheriff ultimately captures David who tells him that he's looking for his mother, the sheriff lets David go and is then killed by the paladins. That's where the art is from.
In regards to "breaking canon" and "doing the impossible", that scene in the car is to explain that some Jumpers are able to do things that other Jumpers can't. Like being able to Jump moving objects being specifically pointed out comes across as an explanation that he's able to do something that others can't. This sets it up for David to be able to Jump a building later. Also, he's the freaking hero of the story, of course he's going to be able to do things that others can't!!!
I always wanted a sequel to this movie because of show it sets David up as being the "Neo" of the Jumper universe. Though I gotta ask... how was it not painfully obvious that is what they were doing?

I do like the idea of a movie adaptation at least changing it up a little bit, but it obviously has to make sense in the context of the story, and has to be ex excited properly, otherwise there isn't a point in making the change.
It’s about three miniutes into the video that I realised ‘jumper’ is referring to someone who jumps and not a thick wooly sweater as it’s called a jumper in England and Australia.

@@KrimsonRogue This is late but I actually thought of a fun magic system based off of sweater (not quite clothing actually)
So basically the magic of this universe is made available through natural materials and subsequently clothing. And the more well made clothing made by trained weavers, the better and easier the magic inside it can be used and manipulated. Since it takes time for any weaver or tailor to become trained and a master, and clothing made by ametures can cause the magic to backfire if not weaved correctly, thus high quality magic clothing were only made available to the nobles and royalty.
Clothing for normal people usually have some magic in it (as it's still made from natural materials) but the magic can at most help people heal faster or keep warmer. Whilst the high quality clothing for nobles can allow them to fast track plant growth or blow fire and just much more elaborate and powerful.
There are clothing made of certain materials made available to people who do a specific job as 'uniform'. Blacksmiths for example have aprons with fire resistance magic and shopkeepers have outfits that allow them to subtly read someone else's mood or intent to better serve them or aware of potential shopkeepers.
Well weaved pieces of clothing are passed down the generation, from matriarch to patriarch, from grandparents to grandchildren. When clothing become unable to be worn, it will be cut up and each member of the family will be given a piece of the fabric as keep sake, turned into headbands or sewn into other clothing.
When the industrial ages arrived and massive weaving machines that could weave powerful magic into cloth just like any master weaver, magic then that were only available to the top of the hierarchy where made available to the everyday man. (more powerful magic were also used in wars by soldiers and not just commanders and had a big effect on how massive battles are fought as well)
This of course is amazing, making this previously exclusive powerful to everyone but this also brought on the age of fast fashion. Machine woven is fast and reliable, able to pump out many times over the amount a normal weaver can make a day but the quality in the fabric created is not the same. They often don't last nearly as long as man weaved cloth and the magic in the clothing, though powerful, are not able to be manipulated.
Ultimately its a critique on fast fashion as well as the up and down side of clothes made by massive conglomerations that show no care towards the clothing made nor the workers in the process.
Everyone knows that Marrow's powers is where it's at. :|

Good question, I don't know.
I'd probably spend a good few hours thinking of what I'd even do with it.
Maybe It's because I'm autistic, maybe because I'm paranoid (Probably both.) I'd think of how I could easily use my powers to make me money that is neither Illegal nor morally dubious (These kind of powers could be easily used to get around certain loopholes about traversal as well afford me certain advantages no one else could do.).
I'd also probably use them to go visit a list of places I want to see (Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Mann, Finland, Greenland (I like the cold.), Christian Holy Sites (I might as well if I can just teleport anywhere.), Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, and wherever else that'd tickle my fancy.).
Probably use said wealth to afford decent, but not extravagant housing and pay off various house and car loans for the family. (I value pragmatism.) because anything extravagant would cost too much and would arouse suspicion and I really don't need it.
But Robbing a Bank or being a Creeper is not how I'd use them, even as a 15 year old as my mind hasn't changed particularly much since then.
.........Man, I spent way too much time contemplating that.

There were jumpers in the age where no one had the tech or weapons to properly fight let along track a Jumper?
How did one of them never use their powers to become some sort of Sorcerer/Wizard King?
Just imagine a Jumper in Medieval Axum, Just Conquering all of Arabia by Sowing Chaos amongst the enemy Nobility via a mixture of Stealth Jumping and given the time probably assassinations to destabilize their realms and then just conquer the entire peninsula.
Likewise, Imagine if Hannibal Barcid, his son, or one of his soldiers could just Pop over to Rome with some Troops and just take out the Roman Leader. Bam! Carthage beats Rome.
Like, this is some Timeline altering shit that would happen if this power was real and was a thing back then.
That's like the tip of the Iceberg of how that could and probably would change history.
There's no way Medieval Knights/Inquisitors could catch a jumper easily.

you underestimate religion (they would be considered witches/demons/dijins/etc) and power of assassination. Also how few of them they are, there were three in the whole world. Just look for the king with demonic powers and spread the news how he is a monster worshiping satan. Heck Vlad the Impaler could be jumper not vampire.
The Paladin's should hook up with the Magisterium (from the movie, not the books), seeing as they are equally effective in their movie universes.
I could get down on the mother part of the story. That wasn't bad at all. At least they kept it brief rather than the primary focus since they changed it.
Thanks for reviewing the book and movie. Jumper is one of my favorite novels, and the movie just butchered it. I really wish they could've kept the terrorism plot in some form along with Davy jumping NSA agents around the world and the final confrontation between Davy, his father, Brian Cox and Rashid Matar. The film wasted so much potential.

Probably might give it another watch, I remember liking this movie a lot, most likely because of the concept. Think I might also give the book a try too. Honestly, I would love for this to be a comic book! That would be pretty cool. ^^

i was entertained by it and the ending part of the review was my favorite. Though before I saw this I didn't know this even existed but after this review I'm interested in checking out the first book.

This is my first video from this guy but seeing the Gone series in the background lets me know this guy has patrician taste.
The biggest problem with teleportation that story like this rarely talk about is what I call the leap of faith problem, you can jump to the same spot many times and be fine but at some point something or even worse someone is going to be in that spot and you end op occupying the same space and as physics tells us 2 objects can not occupy the same space at the same time, so best case scenario (if you ask me) you jump your self inside a newly placed pole or something get cut in half and die, worse case scenario you jump inside someone they go splat and you probable still die, really they only way to fix this is by using portals that you can see thru before going in or be able to see a live image before jumping, I don't know if the book had something like that and it's been a long time since I've seen the movie but I'm pretty sure the movie didn't have that so at least at some point some people should have gone splat.
Edit: Also I had no idea BB guns could do that I always thought that at most it would sting a bit.
Honestly, I disagree. Nightcrawler, from what I remember, is just able to teleport exactly like this movie. Instead I think the problem is more that the elephant in the room is never addressed in any way. It's fine if there's that sort of risk involved, because all powers in superhero stories have drawbacks, but the story needs to state if that's the case and show the characters overcoming it. For example, My Hero Academia addresses this problem with Mirio. He has the ability to phase through things like a ghost, but like that implies, it also means that he risks sinking to the ground and suffocating and getting hurt by jumping into things and dying. He trains and uses his powers in such a way that risk is lessened if he actively thinks about his movements and steps. He's even able to sink into the ground and pop out and launch himself at people. Never read the book either, but I imagine an explanation like that would be in it.
Jubilee is the worst X-Man? Uh, maybe when you compare her to the heavy hitters, but compared to the ones you mentioned, at least she could theoretically do more with her powers.
Jubilee, at the very least, could daze her opponents with light. Better than anything Skin can do.
Beak is one of the most powerful X men there is... Utterly unrelated to his actual power.
What he's good for is A: He's really good at making friends, and B: access to the multiverse.
This led to him beating one of the strongest villains in Marvel (An evil Superman-expy) by just finding 2 other versions of the guy who were heroes, and going "ya mind giving me a hand with something?"
Worst power to have is that of Forget-me-not. He's never remembered as soon as he leaves someone's sight. He can't turn it off. He went kind of fucking insane.
And don't diss Jubilee. She's a vampire slayer, and anyone who works with Blade to kick Dracula's ass earns badass points by association.
I feel like this movie is a crossover between the main jumper books and the alternative one with Griffin
Not sure why, but I got the image of Gambit smacking his face at a TSA agent telling him he can't bring on any liquids over 3 ounces because they might be explosive, when you asked what X-Men's powers we'd want.
The funny thing is, stupid joke aside, I WOULD have said Nightcrawler, simply because I wish I could teleport and visit my overseas friends.
Another great review dude, I remember catching this on tv and thinking meh. But my first exposure to it was when someone posted the trailer on youtube as a trailer for a Sonic movie. David was meant to be Sonic and the jumping was supposed to be superspeed, Griffin was supposed to be Tails so they didn't show him jumping in the trailer and Roland was meant to be Shadow. Man that was weird for me to watch as a kid.
Also, when Mowgli releases in October, any plans to revisit the Jungle Book with either 1942, 1994 or 2016 versions? (the latter of which I'm dying to know your thoughts on).

He also directed The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow, both seriously cool movies. Yeah this film was a turd, but he's still good in my book.

It would've been good if they kept the NSA hunting David but only because they're headed in secret by the Paladins kind of like Abstergo being the modern Templar Knights hunting Assasssins for centuries.

I didn't know it was an adaptation until I saw the book on a Goodwill shelf. Made me want to read it since I liked the movie...now I realize it would've been an Eragon situation all over again (that movie can burn in hell for what it did to the book).
I actually really like the movie and it made me wants to read the book, which is 100% better !! But the fact that the movie introduced another jumper and paladin is interesting.

I remember reafing something a long time ago about them drastically changing the plot due to 9/11. Which, assuming I'm not mis-remebering, makes sense. Terrorists hijacking airplanes was likely more palatable in 1992 than in 2006 when filming began.
its not really hypocrisy when the paladins go through jumpscars. They only do it to follow jumpers in order to kill them. Its not like the paladins have that power too
