I really can't equate The Mummy (Brendan Fraser edition) with a Dark Universe.

Evelyn Carnahan was the first female character I ever looked up to when I was a kid! She's smart, witty, fearless and overall, a great role model for little girls :)
Yes! I was in high school when the movie came out and wanted to be an archeologist so I just ADORED her! She's a fantastic character who holds up today.
She kicks a lot of ass in these movies
She was also the character who made me realise I was totally gay because I had such a crush on her.
She represents for the readers. As the young folks say I Stan her.
She gave us bookish clumsy girls hope. Also charming as hell portrayal by Rachel Weisz! I was obsessed with her as a young teen.
Um, there WAS a Saturday morning cartoon. It was based on the sequel though.

Rachel Weisz's Evelyn didn't get her kudos or much of any notification in the honest trailer. She is so freaking charming and heroic as well as being flawed! She is basically the one who summoned Imhotep!
Evie was a freaking BAMF hero and un-apologetically smart. I think the panel of guys underestimates the power and impact of having a relateable (I mean, as far as relateable exists in a mummy movie) geeky female hero in an action movie in this era.
Sarah Leymaster Yeah, the trailer would have been written way differently if a woman had been involved in the writing. Lots of us Millennial girls were enamored by her! I love that she isn't perfect, though. She basically summons the mummy. But she realizes her mistake and completely owns up to it and tries to get Rick to help her save the world! She's not an action hero so she basically is the damsel in distress for a chunk of the movie--but her smarts ultimately save the day. She has a nuance to her that a lot of leading ladies in action flicks don't seem to have.

Sarah Leymaster I loved evie! She’s my all-time favorite. She was really beautiful, extremely smart, really funny, feminine and attractive ❤️ her and rick really complemented each other ❤️
I actually think she steals the movie. She commands the screen and her character is so competent and is vital to defeating this villain. The movie is suppose to be a fun swashbuckling adventure. This movie holds up so well and is still fun!
Talking about how great the first act was focused on character development and the third act being the action heavy part, that's probably why this film was the perfect date movie film when it came out. It had the drama, romance, comedy, action and great characters, a little bit of everything for everyone without loosing itself trying to appease audiences.
Ankhesenamun was a real person, in real life. An Egyptian queen in the eighteenth dynasty. She died in 1322 BC. Imhotep was a real guy too, an architect and high priest, who died 2950 BC, long before Ankhesenamun was born.
The fun is that Nefertiri (more like Nefertari) was also a real person. She was a wife of Ramesse II., son of the pharaoh Seti I.
The Mummy is a classic that deserves love. The Mummy Returns not as much. The third one we do not speak of.

It doesn't have Rachel Weiss. That's disqualifies it.
I actually made my family watch the third Mummy film instead of going to watch Wall-E, biggest regret of my life haha 😂

Returns was good. The problem with the dragon emperor was lack of interest by the writers, they left the Egyptian theme, and my boy Ardith was cut out
I always thought the mummy confused Evie for Anck Su Namun because he stole the near sighted guy's eyes and they looked similar from afar.

When are we getting Encino Man 2?
the 'arab character' is British comedian Omid Djalili, he also played a similar sleazy arab character (slave trader) in Gladiator, he does stand-up comedy subverting and mocking arab stereotypes ironically so bet he loved playing these characters
did you see the one episode of Would I Lie To You where he was on the panel? On his first turn he picks up the card and goes "It says 'read in accent'... now that's just offensive" lol
Also he's British Iranian and so Persian not Arab. But yes he's funny as a stand up comedian
They also had Ardith, who they skipped over, who isn’t a stereotype
The special effects were done by ILM. A far cry from Mortal Kombat. Some of them are a little ropey, but I think what they achieved is pretty impressive for the time, and they were trying things that hadn't been done yet. It's in the sequel where they really bit off more than they could chew.
The mummt itself and scarabs still hold up imo
And somehow it holds up better than the movie that followed...
@@Cobralalalala in defence of the second one they did not have much time to properly render the effects at all, but the second one continues the story and evolving the characters beyond the good guy and bad guy ,in the second one Evie is not just typical damsel in distress now she is kicking ass and O'connel while still the good guy is now a father trying to save his son from death and willing to sacrifice himself for his family . But still the first one is still the best but at least they somewhat evolved the characters we know and love.
I remember seeing the guy who plays "Main Arab Stereotype Guy" on Just For Laughs ages ago. The "character" from the movie was a bit he'd do playing into audiences inherent preconceived prejudices as he portrayed those mannerisms. Then halfway through the set switched to his actual voice, which is a posh British accent. It's a good gag, at least back then it was.
Yeah, I always got the impression that the character was intended to be a tongue-in-cheek satire of that stereotype, as are many, if not all, of the other characters in the film.
I see The Mummy has really inspired Spenny's choice of wardrobe today.
1999 was like peak Blockbuster. I'm sure everyone rented it all the time after it came out so it resonated with them.
I think Spencer mentions it here but with the other talking it kind of gets stepped on, 1999 was actually one of the greatest overall years for film in the last few decades. American Beauty, Fight Club, Election, Matrix, Sixth Sense, Being John Malkovich, it goes on and on.
I love when they are joking around and spontaneously say the same thing/make the same sound/do the same move at the same time. Like Joe and Spencer meow-ing together, or when Dan, Joe and Spencer all did the Predator face in another commentary. They are so in-sync, it’s awesome!

I'm not even close to being even an armchair expert of Egyptian history, but let me add some fast and flawed information to clear things up.
Egyptian tombs were hella plundered even before colonialism. "Curses" weren't a way of giving your enemies super powers, but rather to serve as a warning to would-be intruders of that tomb during a time when we could assume people were likely much more superstitious.
This would also explain why their local "guides" are sort of uncouth scumbags. These aren't professional guides from a federal tourism organization, they're robbers and/or corrupt officials such as the prison warden. They're not supposed to be a shining example of their culture, and I think regardless of the setting of the movie that character would have been portrayed in a similar manner. We're not supposed to like them.

I was pretty shocked when they said they didn't realize how popular and beloved 1999's _The Mummy_ is. I don't even think it's necessarily generational. Not only is it a pretty unanimous nostalgic favorite for Millennials and Gen: Z, who grew up with the film, but it also kinda of transcended those groups. Ex. I know plenty of baby-boomers and Gen: X's who absolutely adore the film. (Hell, I'm 31 and my parents are in their 60's/70's, and it's still a go-to watch for movie-nights when I visit them.)
It really is just a perfect little adventure movie, and it's one of the most re-watchable films of the past twenty years. I saw it in theaters when I was eleven, and I still pop it on quite often to this day. It really wouldn't surprise me if it was considered a classic thirty years from now.
I've been really surprised lately when I talk about this film and just how many people haven't seen it; really thought it was a pop culture staple too. Hope it gets all the love!
I watched this movie and it's sequel every weekend at my grandma's on VHS. I would watch it multiple times a day sometimes. I absolutely loved it.
Blast from the Past has always been my favorite Brendan Frasier movie. The premise is perfect for his talents.
Guys there was a mummy Saturday morning cartoon! It was set right after the 2nd one and focused on their kid.
It didn't take place after the second movie.
Rather it was based on the second movie. It took the plot of the movie and serialized it for television. The same thing was done for Jumanji, and Men in Black.
I do love Omid Djalili though! He is the Arab stereotype in the movie, but is also a really successful comedian and actor here in the UK

You could do a lot with it the idea of it being Star Trek 10 (which preserves the odd-even rule for Star Trek movies)

Galaxy Quest came out in December 1999, so not a summer blockbuster, unfortunately. And really, Galaxy Quest is practically a re-enactment of a Star Trek HT.
Jonathan and ardeth were pretty cool characters and you didn't even mention them in the trailer.

I hate to be the "Actually.." guy, but complaining about Rachel Weiss playing an Egyptian because of how white she is is a bit odd, seeing as she's Jewish, and Jews originate in very close proximity to Egypt. So, it's really not THAT big of a stretch. Not all Middle Eastern people are dark skinned. Just like anywhere you go, you'll find a diverse mix of people. They don't have "one look". There are blonde haired blue eyed North Africans.
She also says that she half British and Egyptian. She also chooses to study ancient Egypt in Egypt. They don't have good arguments imo

Jews Actually originate in Chaldea, Which would be around modern day Iraq if I recall correctly.
Egyptian is a person born in Egypt & someone who has families who have Egyptian culture (I guess) & Jewish is a reglion. She's all white. Like most people there in the Middle East & the middle East people are Asians
Actually, the modern Jews (Ashkenazis) are of European origin. Nothing to do with the Middle East. Modern Israel is populated with European immigrants.

I saw this movie when I was 9 or 10 years old and I watched it at least 15 times when I was a kid because it had everything: horror, adventure, comedy, action and romance. Benny and Benjamin had us kids rolling with laughter, the mummy scared the ever loving crap out of us, the special effects were mind blowing at the time (again for a kid). It's still such a rewatchable movie for me. And quotable:
" I... am a librarian."
"Looks to me like you're on the wrong side of the river!"
"You must not read from the book!!"
"Americans."
I was just rewatching the honest trailer commentary from the Tom Cruise mummy remake this morning and wondering when I'd ever get to see the honest trailer and commentary for this one... And what do you know, a few hours later and my prayers are answered! Thanks for your great work, guys!!! So enjoyable!
Lets be clear, though. Yes, British and other western archaeologists were taking ancient Egyptian cultural artifacts. But those artifacts were in no way sacred to the Muslim culture and had not in any way preserved ancient Egypt's heritage following the seventh century conquest. If anything, the British discovery, export, and restoration of ancient Egyptian sites helped fuel the later phenomenon of secular Egyptian nationalism under Nasser, et al.
That's a great point. Arab Egyptians didn't and still don't even speak the same language as the ancient Egyptians. Arabs colonized the country in the 7th century so Egyptians in the 1920s thinking all those ancient artifacts are part of their culture and lineage is the same as an modern English person in the 1920s looking at say a Roman artifact in England and going "yep, my culture made this!" Also say what you will about the British, Muslim Egyptians had 1300 years to take care of the remaining sites and dig up the buried ones and they chose not to. Those white British explorers and archeologists with the help their Egyptians guides are the reason every single school kid in the world knows who King Tut was.

The scene when Imhotep takes the guy's eyes scared the crap out of me when I was a kid lol. Great popcorn movie though!
I was so sad when the blind man was consulting someone for help and it turned out to be Benny and the Mummy. (When I rewatch this movie I often skip this scene because it ruins an otherwise fun movie.)
Legit was on seven times while I was in ICU the past two weeks unable to use a phone thinking why haven't I seen an honest trailer about it 😂😂🙏♥️
Yay for the 'Deep Rising' shoutout from Lon, one of my favourite schlocky monster flicks alongside 'Split Second' with Rutger Hauer.
I watched Split Second about two weeks ago. That is a genuinely odd film. Rutger Hauer appears to be acting in a totally different film to everyone else, and maybe also out of his mind on some very strong narcotic-type substances. The cast is a who's who of British character actors at the start of their careers, too!
They call Rick O'Connell by his surname because that's what people did back then and still do in many countries today, they call people by their surname. For those people calling someone by their first name is incredibly intimate (and usually that's how you can recognize when someone is interested in you, they start calling you by your first name to create that intimacy).

Now that you say it. The Mummy was my Indiana Jones. I was 6 when the movie came out, mum hired the video out and I would watch this every day for the whole week, then beg mum to hire it again. For a solid 6 months I watched it Every. Single. Day.

“The Librarian and the Return to King Solomons Mine”! That is what you should do for an honest trailer. It was a made for TV movie that was a sequel to another made-for-TV movie and that whole trilogy had a TV series that was pretty good also.
I never did see the last episode of the Librarians TV show. My DVR messed up the recording. Did they save the library?

What if the Pharoah did the curse to keep people from taking artifacts from their locations. By making a super evil God that would only be released if someone tried to take the necessary artifacts for themselves as a brutal punishment for human's in the future. What if the evil God guy was waiting somewhere in the afterlife knowing what the curse will do and that he can only be set free by some rando who knows all about the situation or the locations

The Mummy is one of my favorite movies! Brendan Frazier was one of the first actors I "followed" after seeing him in George of the Jungle.
Need to do Sahara. Mathew McConaughey's finest work. To this day I still joke about pulling a Panama. It's so stupid but an unbelievably good time.

When i first watch the film (as a british person myself) i was like "oh its that guy! i bet he does his stereotype arab thing.
It's like having Mister Bean in a film, you know he's gonna be Mister Bean just accept it
I was like 11 or 12 when this masterpiece came out, and it is definitely one of my favorite movies hands down. So u were right about things that come out when we were around that age truly making an impact on us. Also I love the "Blockbuster Video" knock off logo u guys put in the beginning coming up from under the popcorn lol.

This movie was perfect . Not a great film , not a bad film . I even had the game for PS1. The score was amazing for this film as well . That’s awesome that you guys did an honest trailer for it . The thing I always liked about this movie was that the horror was a consequences of cultural appropriation, and the villain was basically a security system.
The thing about Dark Universe that annoyed me the most was that if someone took 15 min on Google they could have connected the concepts of the other monsters more directly to the Mummy.
Ancient Egyptians were really into medicine and potions (Dr. Jeckyll/The Invisible Man), worshipped hybrid gods that wolf/man (the Wolf man), or fish/man (Creature from the Black Lagoon), even one that was bat/man (Dracula), and one of their prime deities corpse was literally reassembled and reanimated (Frankenstein)!
Bes as the ugly, short comedy sidekick who turns out to be a fearsome fighter.
I think it is terrible that we have never seen a depiction of Seshat the goddess of the Library in film. Wearing leopard print and with a red headband (with a dope leaf tucked in it, or is it papyrus flowers?) keeping her hair out of her eyes as she writes.
I've never seen either of the Mummy movies, but I really do love School Ties and Encino Man.

I actually really enjoyed H. Rider Haggard's novels as a child. It wasn't until college when I learned about the dangers of the White Savior Trope.
90's version of a universal monsters shared universe? That's pretty easy depending on what you want to do and what kind of twists you may want on things. Going with just kind of a standard cast.
Characters from the Mummy as is (Rick and Imothep having to work together would be priceless)
Gary Oldman as Dracula (obvious I know)
Arnold Schwarzenegger as Frankenstein
Alan Rickman, Tim Curry, or Jeremy Irons as Jekyll and Hyde.
RDJ as the invisible man (Yes he counts for 90's, first thing I saw the thing for Ironman I went "the guy from US Marshals?")
Not sure on the werewolf, I think this is where I'd maybe flip things and cast a female in the role at which point I'd go Uma Thurman or Demi Moore.
If we go more non-traditional Frankenstein, Invisible Man stays the same along with the Mummy stuff but -

Jekyll and Hyde -Denzel Washington (Cause Fallen)
Werewolf still a coin toss on who and what way to go.

In regards about Evie being played by the "whitest person", there's actually controversy over what skin tone ancient Egyptians were. Because of European invaders it's speculated that certain classes could have been pale. So her being white if she already had an English father isn't so far-fetched.
