How to Make and Install Strap Holders or Bra Keepers Tutorial - Easy DIY Sewing Project

- How to make and install strap holders / bra keepers.
Keep the shoulders and neckline of your clothing in place so that your bra straps or other straps do not show and stay in place.
If you have sloping shoulders or a neckline that is too wide, having a bra keeper strap holder will help your clothes stay in place. Just make sure you have a bra that fits well.
With just needle and thread and a couple of press stud snap sets, you can easily create a thread chain loop channel for your straps.
You can also use narrow ribbon, elastic, or lingerie straps instead of the chain to attach the snap.
Adjust the length of your chain to suit the width of your bra straps

Very well explained and augmented by a clear, close-up video so I can see exactly what you're doing. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching😊
That's what I thought too. Close video without getting her fingers in the way of the viewer.
This was so well explained! I'm old enough to remember when most dresses and tops were finished with French seams and had extra buttons hidden at the hem and bra-strap keepers as a rule...but with the development of fast fashion, those little details have fallen by the wayside. Glad to learn how to add my own, and how to do so efficiently and beautifully. Thanks! My first of these "fixes" will be on a square neck chiffon top that I adore but find annoying to wear. Because its "sleeves" are set wide, toward the outside of my shoulders, they keep shifting and showing my bra. I had tried a similar solution with snaps and a satin ribbon, but I know the thread chain will give it more friction and therefore work better to keep the slinky material where I want it.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Have a great day!
Thank you, I finally tried it, for the first time it was hard, but once I did the other side it was a little better. Wish I could send you a picture. 👍🏻👍🏻
I keep coming back to this video to secure the shoulders of all sorts of tops and bodices; thank you so much for making it and for being so clear and easy to follow
Glad it helps 😊thanks for watching
This is genius! I've been struggling with this problem also and tried different things but this truly works. I'm so glad I found your channel! Now I'll be attempting to make the beautiful butterflies from one of your other videos. Thank you very much for sharing!!
So glad you found this helpful. Have fun sewing!😊

Thank you for your clear instructions. I was just about to sew snaps on to ribbon and then sew the ribbon on to a dress, but I like your approach so much better!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching😊
Now this is a video that deserves a thousand views!
Thank you😊
What an elegant solution! I was planning to create my own retainers using ribbon--but this is so minimalist and skillful! Thank you!
You are so welcome! Glad you found it helpful😊
Thank you for this!!! I am trying to change my mindset around clothing and finally alter/add tacks to the clothes that need them instead of following the trend of treating my clothes as "disposable." I want to make the clothes I already have more wearable instead of just following the advice to go out and just buy different or "better" clothes. Nothing is custom fit anymore with straight sizing and mass production. I think the art of tailoring+altering is becoming under-appreciated and lost. I'm at the point where I will need a mindset shift, so I have begun journaling about what changes may be needed as I wear my clothes. I am hoping to make progress!
This is a great mindset!
So much tailoring instruction included here. I am fascinated! Thank you.
Thanks 😊 Glad you found this helpful
Thank you! I bought a custom dress from eShatki and it came with bra strap holders. What a game changer! Now, I plan on putting some into dresses and tops. I’ve noticed Banana Republic and J. Crew clothing also have them. I wish more brands had them.
Wonderful! thanks for watching😊
Such a perfect description with each step outlined- thank you !! My daughter’s Prom will be awesome now!!
So glad!
Works like a charm! My chain was not as neat as yours, especially the first one. Now all I have to do is remember to unsnap when I take the shirt off. Thank you!!
Fantastic!
Thank you! I need to add this to a wedding dress for my niece and your tutorial is very helpful.
You’re welcome 😊. You can also add snaps to thin ribbon instead of making chain. Cheers!
I wish I could give this a thousand likes, this is the best tip I have seen in a long time. Thank you
You're very welcome! Please share and check out some of my other videos. Have a great day!
Thank you for posting this. I've done similar before by taking some embroidery thread and braiding a few strands together but your method is superior, faster and easier to do!! 💖
Glad it was helpful!
@@NotchesSewing Definitely was!
This is the 3rd shirt I have done this to, thank you so much for such a clear, easy to follow video!
Glad it was helpful!

So very cool! I wish I'd known about this 55 years ago, hahaha!... Live and learn!
Exactly! I learn something new everyday😊. Thanks for watching.
This is a great demonstration!!! I was about to buy these retainers but now I will make my own for every dress I have😊thank you so much for sharing!
Wonderful! Have fun!😊
So glad I found this!!! I have no real sewing experience but will give it a try hoping I will manage to get it done! Your instructions are perfect!
You can do it! Try it on some scrap first so if it isn’t perfect you don’t need to unpick anything. It’s just getting a hang of the chaining part. Have fun😊
@@NotchesSewing Great suggestion! Will definitely do!!!
wonderfully demonstrated thank you
My pleasure. Hope it helps 😊
This is the best explanation I have seen of carriers. Fantastic!!! I was able to accomplish them easily. Thanks so much for the video !!!!🎉

Thanks 🙏🏻🙏🏻 for a great 👍 sewing tip ! 🥰🥰
Hi Berniece! Thanks so much. I suggest putting on a movie or podcast while installing all those snaps! Let me know if there’s anything in particular that you’d like to learn. I have a whole notebook of things I need to share with time…. Also I have a couple of longer tutorials on Skillshare if you want to check them out. Links are in the description. Have a great day!😊

You are so welcome! Thanks again for watching🙏
Notches Sewing Dear Angela🌷, since I discovered your channel, I have unsubscribed from nearly all other sewing related channels. Your teaching style, obvious professional skills and even what you choose to make, are enough for me to follow and learn from and this all gives me pleasant time at the sewing machine. I'll keep watching and following. Wishing you continued success 💐
your instructions are amazing
Thanks Penny😊
Thank you so much for this wonderful video explanation, I've just bought a new top that is definitely going to slip off my shoulders but now I have found your video I am confident that this problem will be solved! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I loved this idea. I have a couple of blouses I don’t wear because they are always falling. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Love this! Worked really well for my jumper straps.
I'm so glad! Thanks for the feedback. Please check out some of my other tutorials. Have a great day!
Fantastic video. Thank you so much!! The suggestion to try making a chain first on a piece of scrap material is a good one!! (I'm doing alterations on a bridesmaid dress.)
Thanks for watching! Have fun with the alterations.😊
I was thinking of this exact issue a few days ago. Your solution is much better than what I had thought of! Thanks sonkuch
Glad to help
I expected you to add a strip of ribbon for this but I like using this chain. Very cleaver, thank you. I’ve subscribed.
Thanks Cyndi!
Thank you. Great tutorial.💐
Thanks for watching!
What a very neat and classy way of doing this! I’ve used pins but go on the hunt searching for tiny pins each time I go and wear certain shirts/ dresses..I’ve thought of placing some fabric but thought of the bulk would happen and dreaded it showing a bulge/ bump (attracting the attention and focus to it from others while speaking. Not wanting that- think you know what I mean) you showing the finished completed after you’ve tied the knot- it looks professional and that the garment was bought like that! Honestly, when I seen your UA-cam pic before pressing play- I thought you were maybe going you use safety pins or fabric- I was wring and ‘love’ this way soo much better!! -and no more seeking on a pin hunt either- woot-woot (saved me time not have to think about- where would a pin be?- when I can focus on finishing getting ready and the event/ meeting etc that I am going to with no worries or moments of the unwanted -thank you! This video is truly a blessing in disguise!!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad this will help you save time and frustration😊
This is awesome, tysm for showing this!!!!

Super instructions; talented in teaching!
Glad you think so!
This is beautiful and elegant. If I had a lovely blouse like this, it would definitely be worthwhile. Unfortunately, I need to find a quick solution for a dozen inexpensive tunics that all have the same problem. I'm still looking for the lingerie pins Grandma used. Apparently no one uses them any more. Thanks for sharing this lovely technique.
Here is my link for those retainers you mentioned. Thanks for watching.

Great video, what kind of thread did you use?
Thank you. I am using regular polyester thread.
Great tip!
Thanks for watching! Please share and have a look at some of my other videos. Cheers!
This looks like a great idea. I'm wondering though if it would help with my main problem I have with my bras. I have a narrow back and also one shoulder lower than the other. I also have a very short torso. As I know have to wear DD bras these days, the strap on my lower shoulder keeps falling down completely onto my upper arm. I don't have any clothing that has lining in them. Would I be better off trying to shorten the strap on that side instead? I also wear the stretchy bras that you slip over your head to put on. But I have the problem with traditional types of bras too. Sorry for the essay! And it's great to see such a fantastic sewing channel based in Australia! PS Would love to buy the thread snippers but the postage costs more than the snippers :/ ...Thanks again :)
Yes sounds like you should shorten one strap since your shoulders are different. You may also want to wear cross back bras to prevent from slipping . You can also buy the connectors that turn normal straps into racer backs. Hopes this helps. Thanks so much for watching my channel🙏😊
Thanks! Is easy and so neat and perfect fit! 🥰
Glad you like it! Please share and have a look at some of my other videos for more sewing tips. Cheers!
For a lot of women who need more support, bra straps are not usually thin and flat like the one shown as an example in the video. Should I make the chain a bit longer to accommodate a bulkier strap?
Yes mark on shoulder seam the width you would need
I really like this idea, but I’d have to do this to almost all my shirts.
Put on a good movie or podcast and do a couple a night😊. Thanks for watching.
my mum in law used to do that with all her dresses.
Thanks
You're very welcomed Jamila. Thanks for watching. Please share and have a look at some of my other tutorials. Cheers!
this is geniuss!
Thanks. Please give it a try😊
My problem is a dress with straps that fall. I’d like to secure them to the bra straps. The dress straps are only slightly wider than the bra straps, so this technique isn’t quite right. I don’t actually mind the bra straps showing just a little; mainly I’m tired of constantly picking up the fallen dress straps. Any advice?
You can just sew the snap directly onto your bra strap without chain so it is permanently on it. You can also just use a safety pin or double sided tape to hold in place.
Do you have a sewing channel with close up camera view - I'm learning to sew and need help to thread a brother computerize sewing machine
just this UA-cam channel. do you have the manual?

And to think how much they charge to do this on a wedding dress
did you just have this done? What were you charged? Don’t forget that along with labour, there will be the costs of running a bridal business included…..
@@NotchesSewing I had it done to my dress in 2012 and was charged $15 for each one to bussle my dress. I have another dress that I need to bussle and now know how to. So thank you.
🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Laurie😊
