Copperline - James Taylor
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лис 2010
- Performed by Taylor in HD with stunning sound quality.
Copperline was released on the 1991 album "New Moon Shine". During the late 1980s, he had began touring regularly, especially on the summer amphitheater circuit. His later concerts featured songs from throughout his career.
Taylor had thoughts of retiring by the time he played the massive Rock in Rio festival in Rio de Janeiro in January 1985. He was encouraged by the nascent democracy in Brazil at the time, buoyed by the positive reception he got from the large crowd and other musicians, and musically energized by the sounds and nature of Brazilian music. Lyrics follow:
Even the old folks never knew
Why they call it like they do
I was wondering since the age of two
Down on copperline
Copper head, copper beech
Copper kettles sitting side by each
Copper coil, cup o'georgia peach
Down on copperline
Half a mile down to morgan creek
Leaning heavy on the end of the week
Hercules and a hog-nosed snake
Down on copperline
We were down on copperline.
One summer night on the copperline
Slip away past supper time
Wood smoke and moonshine
Down on copperline
One time I saw my daddy dance
Watched him moving like a man in a trance
He brought it back from the war in france
Down onto copperline
Branch water and tomato wine
Creosote and turpentine
Sour mash and new moon shine
Down on copperline
Down on copperline.
First kiss ever I took
Like a page from a romance book
The sky opened and the earth shook
Down on copperline
Down on copperline
Took a fall from a windy height
I only knew how to hold on tight
And pray for love enough to last all night
Down on copperline
Day breaks and the boys wakes up
And the dog barks and the birds sings
And the sap rises and the angels sigh, yeah.
I tried to go back, as if I could
All spec house and plywood
Tore up and tore up good
Down on copperline
It doesn't come as a surprise to me
It doesn't touch my memory
Man I'm lifting up and rising free
Down on over copperline
Half a mile down to morgan creek
I'm only living for the end of the week
Hercules and a hog-nosed snake
Down on copperline, yeah
Take me down on copperline
Oh, down on copperline
Take me down on copperline.
Listening to James Taylor sing is like getting up at dawn on a Sunday morning in spring in rolling hills of green. You just stand there, quiet, and admire the wonder of all.
Somewhat like this morning.
😊
yes and this morning too
👍
He has a way with words :)
If this guy sang this acapella and never played a note, I would sit there listening. If he played guitar and never sang a lyric, I would sit there listening like a little kid at story time. James Taylor is just such an artist, and I think he really, honestly, gets better with time-
Well stated!!!
Such a national treasure. No auto tune, no gimmicks, just sheer talent that just gets better and better.
International
Absolutely one of the best songs in the entire history of the world!!! Thank you James Taylor!!!❤❤❤ 6 years ago today a girl asked me out on a date to go see James Taylor live at Tanglewood. 3 months later we got married and now have 2 kids.
James Taylor should be recognized as a medication.
I misread this as meditation. But both work.😂
I can see JT's daddy dancing after a couple cups of tomato wine, letting go of the memories of his service time in Europe. If I taught music, I would use this song as how to paint pictices with words and music - it grabs your mind and puts you smack dab in the middle of another time. another place - what a music stud. SC
Growing up in rural Appalachia, and since growing up and having a family of my own, this song has sustained me throughout the years. It IS my memory of home, it literally puts me back in the mountains, and thats way more than just a song to me. James has the rarest gift of all in a musician, he sends you back to your best memories.
Musical magic from a musical treasure.
He has a voice like coming home.
Tarheel born, Tarheel bred and when I die, I'll be Tarheel dead.....
I'd be honored if some James Taylor fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of NEVER DIE YOUNG and FROZEN MAN on my YT channel in tribute to 2 of the master's great compositions from the late 80s period. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
nice phrase, Jay. I hope you take words like this into your writing of poetry
perfectly said
You summed it up
"One time I saw my daddy dance, watched him moving like a man in a trance.
He bought it back from the war in France, down onto Copperline." Teared up. Man.
I danced with my daughter at her wedding. I busted out into a freestyle french clogging at this lyric.
I love how us fans are so devoted, it is as if he helped us forge our lives. Certainly I feel that my life was so influenced by Mr Taylor. My son (42) was sweet baby James, then known as badger by my family. We saw him EVERY time he came to England (or Wales). My three children grew up sleeping to his songs as their background staging or their bedtime lullabies. Even after their dad and I divorced amicably we still had JT in common and would get together with our children to see him in concert. His songs wove the tapestry of our lives, his joy was infectious and his calm enthusiasm was our life guide. He is part of our lives isn’t he? ❤️🙏😘
Very true for me as well! You put it so beautifully, too. Did u know we got a text from James himself?! Scroll down & see it!

Nearly gone forever from heroin addiction, his father drove to NYC to bring him home. Some people were touched by God as a blessing to us all…
Doesn't get better than James Taylor, his guitar and his heart-touching songs; will always be one of my favorite artists
MY FAVORITE
I remember dancing, holding my infant son to this song in 1996. That memory will be with me forever.
Me too!
Yeah! The world loves you James Taylor! Your music will go beyond galaxies! Into other civilizations on other planets! Down on copperline!
James can easily bring a tear of joy to my eye. I realize it's because he's projecting his own joy and peace as he sings about his boyhood years. Bravo! Excellent guitarist, voice pure as ever.
I agree "Close your eyes" get's me a every time
James Taylor.... I just don't have the words for him. What a blessing his music has been to me in my life.
So many of us feel that way.
know exactly how you feel
usernametaken 56 That's really sweet. I get ya.
All four of my now adult children listen to JT, probably because his music was always in our house while they grew. Thank you, sir, for the peace and comfort you give us.
Hearing he'd taken drugs for a while (hey some do, I have lol don't anymore though) actually feel happy share a if the 16 personality types are anything to go by I dunno, but share the same INFP :)
I was born in 86. I found James taylor while listening to my father's albums at the age of 7. For 22 years this man's music has been a part of my life. Thank the Lord for the rare talents he gifts mankind with.
We are so lucky to have lived in this era of great wonderful melodic music (The Beatles, JT, The Eagles and all that followed).
@@jamesoike6787 yes so lucky, i wish i could’ve lived back then, not with the culture and music that we have today. i was born in 05
You are a man of great taste & substance!
I was born 1957 and raised on Motown. The day I found my brothers James Taylor album (Mud Slide Slim) I never went back. My other brother John (God rest his soul) called me a hippie :-)
It's like sacred when found. At that point, only you knew it.
I've listened to James Taylor since I was a baby because my Dad listened to him. It's been 40 years and I still get emotional when I listen to him sing. Now my kids listen to him too.
Great news. Now change your user name! No shame in this.
@@garethwilkinson3456 This is offensive. My name is John Doe. Don't assume my name, gender, political affiliation or vaccination status. :)
I must say the same is true for my six children! James Taylor has blessed our lives so richly and we are so very grateful to him ❤️
That was truly exquisite. His voice is absolutely wonderful, even today. I had the good fortune to see him at an outdoor venue a few years ago and it's still one of my all time favorite shows. The man's a genius. Brilliant!
im 63 yrs and today is daddys day and im here listening to my idol jt your the man.. thank you for ur music.
His music has a richness, simplicity and beauty that no one else can match. He plays with a kind and gentle heart.
The chord progressions throughout this song, but especially in the intro and turnarounds, just touch my soul. I don't really know why and I can't help it. I tear up, a little, every time I listen to it.
This song makes me tear up too. I don’t know why- it’s just so powerful .
... and then there was 3
I think the reason you tear up is because this song is so incredibly beautiful, and JT was touched by the hand of God as the lyrics flowed from his heart.
This is my father. He loved this song. God bless us all ! 2020 is gone, thank God.
When it’s my time to go be with Jesus, I would love to hear James Taylor on my way up to heaven. 😊
I love Jesus too. ❤❤
Just James and his guitar... no lip-synching, no dancers, no flash....just damned good music.
+Cathy Buchanan Or Autotune!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Cathy Buchanan I hear a piano
+Cathy Buchanan Isn't that the truth!!
+Cathy Buchanan and a piano
+Cathy Buchanan And about 100 times more entertaining than all that other stuff. When you have this kind of talent and you nurture it and practice and put in the effort, then you can entertain so many and touch so many. Studies show that music has gotten more generic in recent decades. It's too bad. Where is the next JT?!?
One of my favorites. I come from a small, rural, agriculture town and that's what this song speaks to me of. I'm so lucky to have been raised there, and now raise my 5 children there, watching them walk to church and spend their summers swimming in the canal and falls working in a potato cellar. Life is good.

i'm 63. been playing professionally 40+yrs. JT was my first concert and inspiration. thanks mr. taylor. i've kept you close all this way and you've never failed me once.
we should feel blessed that such a wonder as James Taylor exists
I know I feel blessed, to be in the same era as sweet baby james! :-) :-)
Amen
His music heals.
AGREE!!
This is one of those songs that gets better every single time I listen to it. This man and this song are gifts.
In the last week, I heard Copperline on SiriusXM two times. Each time I wanted it again. This is why I am here today listening to this song on UA-cam by a national treasure, James Taylor.
I first heard JT in 1970. I was speechless then and still am. What a talent! How lucky are we share his music.
That man sure can sing....
4 Eyed Animation yes he can!
James Taylor seems to be consistently flawless in his live shows, but I've got to give real credit to his pianist too; accompanying a guitar with a piano is always tricky because the two instruments tend to fill the same 'space' in an ensemble. But to complement it as effectively as the guy is doing here is incredibly skillful.
That's as close to a perfect song as you can get.
my god...he's just so amazing...I''m a musician...I've admired him for so long. Yep, no auto-tune here...what you hear is what you get. : )
I can't believe how prolific James Taylor has been! He's been composing music for decades! AND, he's managed to keep his voice in good shape, unlike other folkies and rockers. It's a joy to listen to him.
+Janet Townsend If I was a groupie (noun) I would groupie(verb) James properly. Have you had a chance to hear His Son Ben? It is not very surprising since his mom is Carley Simon. They had a couple more sons too.

My memory of this song: My young son and I were driving home from church one Sunday morning. In a car without a/c; windows rolled down, radio turned way up, singing together "...down on copperline..." It was our moment...
He's now a grown man with a family of his own. And he still likes JT music...
OMG That story gave me chills AND tears!
James gets better with age. Completely unexplainable.
i totally agree evan! he is timeless...
I just said to a friend, I loved his music when I was young, now I love his message...I'm 58

Loved him since the early 70's. His music never gets old to me.
I will always cherish his music..for the rest of my life. No one can play from the heart like James Taylor.
my future kids will surely know who he is, ill make sure of it :)
Always a heartwarming performance. Such a sweet, gentle man.
Im 14 and this is my favorite song! Kids in my grade listen to lady gaga and justin bieber but I like James Taylor. I really like the guitar. I think Im really unique because Im not like most kids now. A lot of old men think Im cool because I like this song. Like this comment so other kids will see! :) :) :)
James Taylor is still the greatest, singer, storytell ther
🥀Beautiful Song! I love this song especially since my deceased Husban & I use go to the Carolina South & North several times a year. I love James Taylor all my life🥀☝️✌🥀
A true national treasure! Thanks for allowing us into your orbit!
No one, and I mean no one, can perform like this.........the musical genius that is James Taylor.......truly a living legend.
This song makes want to travel in the beautiful country. 😭❤️ So beautiful! I love the way his voice sounds, and his guitar sound.
We liked him in the 70's and we still do today..
Music is a force of nature. It exists everywhere. It always has and always will be. Once in a great while a conduit is born. The music finds him and flows through him. He doesn't even know why. Enjoy the gift of James Taylor. You're not going to see many like this in your lifetime.
Class act to the fullest. The guy is a gentleman and a poet. A true musical legend and genius.
I saw James perform this same concert in Fort Wayne. Absolutely inspiring. I could go to a JT concert every day. O if I only could afford it.
JT... storyteller, tunesmith, wordsmith, musical god. Long live you!
Back home is never the same:( Go back if I could.... Miss those days. DAYS GONE BYE....
James' sweet tenor and lovely songs are some of the finest things on this old earth.

Superb voice you still have, James of my youth! Thanks for keep on singing!!!
Music is such an amazing thing God gave mankind.
Born in the mountains of India, a 30 year old me could relate to this song as if i was a neighbour to a 76year old gentleman (James)
James you are a true treasure
My favorite JT song, by far.
Just amazing.
I lived in the area for many years. My job took me over the James Taylor Bridge in south Chapel Hill many times. Each and every time was a moving experience. Thank you JT, for the ride of a lifetime!
As a 50yr fan its mine too
An unmatched, mellifluous voice. Truly JT is an American treasure.

How can you dislike James Taylor? He's too awesome to hate.

RIP Dan Grolnick....JT's piano man since the 70's, shown in this video.

I cannot listen to this song without thinking of my youth and just crying. SOOOOOO very beautiful. One of James Very Very Best.
There is one singer that has been with me through my entire life, it is James. His voice, his music surpasses all things for me. This Boston Gal transplanted to the Mountains of Ga. will be realizing a life long dream, seeing him in Concert February of this year
if you distilled bourbon or scotch the day James Taylor was born, kegged it in charred, oak barrels, filtered it through a mile of charcoal made from the best sugar maple and opened it today..... it still wouldn't be this smooth.....
daaaaaaaaaamn. you right tho.
I've had bourbon that was made exactly this way for that long of time. You r absolutely right, not nearly as smooth as ALL JTs tunes!
Every so often, whever I listen to this song, I make sure I scroll down to read this comment (and a few others), just because it absolutely captures what I am feeling. Just wanted you to know that you have added to my experience and joy in this song. Thank you.
Beautiful analogy. You’ve got to be a writer!

Love the song! Thanks for sharing.
James Taylor is in a class of his own! So many great songs, deep in emotions they capture you changing you in a transitional magical way bringing out the best time you can have to enjoy for years to come and more. When you hear him sing it says it all.....
A James Taylor concert will make you cry!
even a recording of an OLD ancient JT concert will make you cry! I love that man.

no joke, i fall asleep to his songs (this included). his voice is simply amazing...
Got my tissues ready....
First heard this song in 1991 on a PBS special... It reminded me of me and my two brothers visiting my father's home in Oxford Mississippi... Big Fun..
I try to listen to his music each morning. I too have a Carolina mind.
I could listen to James Taylor sing for hours daily!

James Taylor and other prolific singer/ songwriters.. there songs/voices will keep going.. like old hymns to another generation
Look on his face! He still enjoy`s every second of his wonderful song! I always come back to listen, thanxxx from Berlin!
I believe he is the most genuine performer, grateful for his life, never complains, has a happy life and he knows it - I am from Massachusetts and he is here almost yearly. NEVER EVER MISSES A NOTE! A perfect voice, strong, gentle and sure. I love you JT - Your only competition is Jeff Bridges, another unselfish laid back, good man. I have loved you both since 1969!
I hear ya, it's his HUMBLE, SOFT, BEAUTIFUL TONE he has, & hits right in the heart🎸🎵
LMBO. I sure he loves your rendition more than any other because "MOM" is singing it to him. He is truly a great singer and I recently found out that he has a SON. I did not know that as well as I did not know he lost a brother to alcoholism. I found that out by listening to "Enough to be own your way". It brought me to tears, as most of his songs does. Keep singing to your son for it is a bond that I am sure one day he will greatly cherish.
I always liked James Taylor, but became a fan in 1993. Fresh out of high school I worked on the ballpark in Arlington Texas, and when they tuned the sound system, they played this song on repeat for 8 hours a day. Love this song, reminds me of my youth.
I was able to hold back my tears until he looked upward at 4:19. Then I lost it. James can somehow make me feel nostalgia for a place I’ve never been. His vocal melodies are so sentimental and his playing is pristine. Thank God for James Taylor
I cry too. This is about Carrboro, NC, next door to Chapel Hill and I lived there for a year about the time he wrote these songs. I might have seen him and never knew it.
@@jaysullivan2496 That's amazing. From what I hear he is a very normal guy and doesn't really make a big deal about himself. He seems quite humble and genuine for a living legend.
