What's insane is, Eddie is only 22 here. And in "48 Hours", his first hit, he was like 19 or 20.. yet he was able to play at least 10 years older by force of his charisma and sheer attitude. Add to that that by this point he'd 1) saved a floundering Saturday Night Live almost single handedly 2) had one of the most sucessful comedy albums and concert films ever and 3) starred in another hit, Trading Places with Dan Ackroyd. He was unstoppable in this era.
20:57 the whole “supercop” routine was adlibbed by Foley and Rosewood was pinching his thigh to not laugh and Taggert was covering his face trying not to laugh.
Love this one - one of my all-time favourite movies. There's not a single wasted scene, line or moment in the whole script. Please do consider the sequel; I don't think it'll do you wrong.
The sequel, Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) is a definite must-react movie. It was made by the Tony Scott/Bruckheimer clan (they made Top Gun) so the action, comedy, and hilarity are all dialed up to 11.
Fun Fact: Axel Foley was originally written as a Sylvester Stallone movie and a straight Ford action flick, but then, when Eddie Murphy was brought on board, it was rewritten to fit his comedy style. Given the film, it worked out for the best.
My mom took me to the theaters to see this when I was 10 years old LOL - While she was a little shocked at first... she became a huge Eddie Murphy fan. She loved Part 2, Trading Places, Coming To America etc etc
I'm from Detroit and yes, that's exactly what the 84 Dodge Diplomat Detroit Police cars looked like. shitty emblem and all. I should know, I sat in a few.
Fast talking 80's Eddie Murphy is a whole vibe. He can run his mouth like no one else. I do enjoy the sequel more (the chemistry is already in place, with beautiful Tony Scott visuals/direction). The third is ok (Serge' returns), but not on the level of 1&2.
Fun fact the guy who gave axel the bananas was damon Waynes one of the older brothers of Shawn and MARLON Waynes who did scary movie and white chicks , there older brother keenan ivory waynes and eddie Murphy grew up together in New York and that's why he put damon in the movie . Eddie always made it a point to put up and coming comedians in his movies
Only saw Beverly Hills part 2 and 3 in a movie theater with mom. I did have the VHS of this sleeper hit. Great performance by Eddie Murphy. Fond memories watching these movies.
Eddie and his wife ended up having 8 kids (yes, EIGHT lol) so thru the 2000s he did a lot of kid and family films (Dr. Doolittle, Daddy Day Care and Shrek) but he also did a epic Musical "Dreamgirls" in 2006 and in 2019 returned to Rated R comedy called "Dolomite Is My Name" based on the true story of 70s action/comedy star Rudy Ray Moore. Eddie's Beverly Hills Cop 4 was held up by strike and all that.... but should show up in 2024. Yes, I'm a HUGE fan of Eddie.
I'm so happy you watched this movie. I saw it in the movie theater and it was a totally wild and new ride. Can't wait for you to watch the next one, which I like just a bit better due to the different mood in the environment and music. Great reaction!
🌴🌴👮♂️🚓 Originally, Beverly Hills Cop was supposed to be a more straight-up action cop movie starring Sylvester Stallone. Not sure what exactly happened, but he left the film to make Cobra 🐍 and then Eddie Murphy was hired and mores comedy was added.
One of my favourite Action/Comedies of all time, and one of Eddie Murphy's best (the second is excellent also, and then They Never Made Another One). 😁 And yes, Axel F is an absolute Banger, it was my favourite tune for months back in '84-'85. Great reaction as always, Kaielle (and good job recognizing Jonathan Banks, I feel like a lot of people miss that). Cheers from the East Coast. 🥃☮❤
I believe the movie was supposed to be more of a serious cop action movie, as Sylvester Stallone was originally approached to play Axel Foley. But after he turned down the role and Eddie Murphy signed on, the tone of the film changed to fit Murphy's comedic sensibilties. Murphy turned down the role of Winston in Ghostbusters to play Axel Foley. But things worked out well for everyone, as Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop turned out to be the two biggest movies of 1984.
THANK you for having a uTube cut-down version for a watchalong, that was great. Man, this and Ghostbusters coming out the same year, there wasn't a day that would go by in high school without someone quoting either flick. What a year.... "I'm a business man, tell me somethin'... back off man, I'm a scientist" 😂😂😂
I always laugh at the scene where Eddie reacts to the price of the hotel nightly rate. Also the conversation Rosewood & Taggert have about undigested meat was what they improved together at their audition.
A GREAT movie. And Martin Brest, the director, is really good at quickly switching from hilarious comedy to extremely dark moments. The film he directed after this is VERY similar in tone, Midnight Run staring Robert Deniro and Charles Grodin. It's a great road trip, not-so-buddy film. Really worth checking out sometime. Hoping one of your patreons suggests it sometime.
You’re right about the guy from Robocop. So, he helped out Beverly Hills Cop. Then he tried destroying Robocop. It’s a little surprising he had absolutely nothing to do with Kindergarten Cop.
AXELS POLICE CHIEF was the real city detective. He was involved in solving some real big cases like the Atlanta Child Murders, and was also working with some case involving someone named 'white boy rick'. I think he was Mayor when he did this movie, and said he doesn't use the f word, but only in the movie.
This is an excellent example of why "Hero's Journey" is not the all-powerful story structure some people think it is: Axel Foley doesn't change, he has no "arc", he stays the same. Another example is The Fugitive. Anyway, thanks Kaielle, great reaction as usual. 🚔
One of the more amazing and unique cop movies from the 80s. I have loved this movie all my life - and Eddie Murphy's best movie work in my opinion. Thanks for doing this, kaiielle!
Great reaction! This is my fifth favourite movie. I first saw it aged about 7, on its first UK tv broadcast in the 80s. I really loved it then, and still do now.
Judge Reinhold(Billy) was 27. Another fun film he was in a couple years earlier is Fast Times at Ridgmont High 1982, that has a load of famous actors in their youth.
One of my favorite movies. Murphy was great in this. Paul Riser who played Jeffery was Paul in Mad About You. Also, Harold Faltermeier who did the main instrumental music also did the instrumental music for Top Gun. I got a movie reaction suggestion for you it's one of my favorite movies, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz it's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.
Great reaction, Kaiielle! I personally see this as the pinnacle of all Eddie Murphy movies, he was never better than in this part in this movie. Fun fact is that this was the beginning of the Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer collaborations as producers of top movies. Eddie Murphy is fabulous as Axel Foley, and yes, that is one of the best names in movies. All of the other characters in this movie do a great job as well. One of my favorite moments is when Axel tells Rosewood & Taggart that the "Supercop Story" was working, and then we immediately see the look on Bogomils(Ronny Cox) face. Priceless! This is a great comedy/action film. From the cigarette truck, to the crappy blue Chevy Nova, to the banana in the tailpipe, to the Supercops, to H-10, to learning that the Chief can hear through the wall. Thank you, for reacting to this great Eddie Murphy flick, and yes AXEL F, is a great movie theme. Let me just say that I've seen Beverly Hills Cop II, and it is a significant drop off from this movie. Of course, you can decide that on your own. Thanks again.
Ronnie Cox's character really wasn't uptight. He did things properly of course, but he also showed he was as smart as Axel, was on to Axel the entire time, and had a sense of humour, he just tried to do things properly. In the end, forced to cover up for his men, he chose to do so since they were trying to do the right thing. Really.. he was the most ideal character.
We Stan for Billy. Enjoyed him in The Santa Clause and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. 80s Eddie Murphy had that swag. 😁👌. Soon as I saw you were watching I knew you'd love him and It. Axel F is definitely a song that'll get stuck in your head. Now Stan for this beauty and give her a like. Good reaction.
You made a great point about Ronny Cox (Bogomil) in this movie. In every other movie I've seen (not just Robocop) he plays a bad guy, so this was refreshing. Please carry on with this and do the sequel, which is every bit as good as this one was. You'll get to see all the cops again, which makes it a boatload of fun!
1. GOOF: An entire truck loaded with EMPTY cigarette boxes.🙄 2. IMVHO Eddies' best movies are "Trading Places and "Coming to America"😎😎 3. Serge/Bronson Pinchot was in a great comedy series "Perfect Strangers". 4. Jenny/Lisa Eilbacher played Segar in "An Officer and a Gentleman" HINT HINT 5. Maitland/Steven Koff is one of the best bad guys ever!😁 He also played the Soviet Colonel in Rambo II. 6. Billy/Judge Reinhold played Brad Hamilton in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
Beverly hills cop 2 is also great. Different but great. This film was written to be serious but number 2 was written as a comedy which gives is a different vibe.
That tough Detroit police inspector was played by a real-life tough Detroit police inspector, Gilbert Hill. He was later on Detroit's city council and ran for mayor (he didn't win). He told interviewers that in his real-life work, unlike in the movie, he seldom yelled and seldom swore. The song playing in the strip club is "Nasty Girl," composed by Prince and performed by the group Vanity 6. It was a hit in 1982 and beyond. The stripper Billy gave money to had the professional name of Mouse.
Gil hill who played axel captain was a real captain in Detroit and he said whenever he talk to the cops he was in charge of he never yelled at them like he did axel in the movie. He ran for mayor in Detroit but lost
@28:20 and 30:53 There are a few reactors that don’t recognize the fact that Billy had to wait until the right moment to go into the warehouse and rescue Axel. If he went too soon, he would have been grossly outnumbered and likely killled. If he’d waited too long, Axel would’ve probably been dead by the time he got in there. Billy’s under appreciated badas- moment is also worth mentioning. He put himself in the line of fire to take down one of Maitland’s henchmen and shot after carefully aiming.
This was one of the movies that helped me perfect my Eddie Murphy laugh. And I also tried to perfect "look man, I ain't fallin for no banana in mah tail pipe" As for watching the rest, yes... some would say the third one was bad, but I still liked it. Serge is played by Bronson Pinchot, who portrayed Balky Bartokomous from the TV series "Perfect Strangers". A series that is part of my growing up, loved that show. The Banana Man, Damon Wayans made his movie debut with this role. I would like to suggest The Last Boy Scout (1991) for a future movie.
I'll always remember Lisa Eilbacher as Casey Seeger in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) (highly, highly recommended). Forty years later it still throws me to see her playing such a different, but still good, character here.
PART 2 IS GREAT TO SEE THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR RELATIONSHIPS. PART 3 IS SO TOTALLY DIFFERENT AS ITS MORE LIKE DIE HARD. THE SEQUELS ARE ALL WORTH SEEING
I think it's funny how you were talking smack about the decals on the Detroit police cars like they're fake... but that is actually how the real Detroit PD looked in the 80s! Like those cars were nearly 100% accurate to real DPD patrol cars of the time😂😂
You've got quite the eye for character actors! Ronnie Cox (Lt. Bogomil) has played both heroes and villains in his long career, though most people would struggle to name him. He was a villain in Robocop, a hero here and a villain again in Total Recall. The first movie I can remember seeing him in, was Deliverance . This movie is one of my favorite Eddie Murphy films, ( though I prefer 48 Hours) and really put Eddie Murphy on the map as a leading man.
@20:04 Paul Drake (Holdup Man #1) played Mick in Sudden Impact (1983) prior to this. He must have been a flash-in-the-pan, because I haven’t seen much of him since.
Watched you Smokey and the Bandit reaction with your dad yesterday. Funny. who doesn't burt and my girl Sally Field. I grew up on that. Grew up on This. You must watch part two as well. It's a must watch. I grew up on this movie. Amazing! Classic action comedy. Classic Eddie. And the Axel F Theme song!!!
The man behind the counter of the hotel at the very end of the film is none other than Martin Brest, the director of the film. Martin absolutely loathed the final freeze-frame, but from what I recall from the DVD audio commentary, the then-owners of the house that doubled for Victor Maitland's home insisted on it.
🚓 (Per your request.)🚔 I've always liked this movie. It came out late in 1984, which was the year I moved out to LA. So, it was fun seeing locations. Of course, I only passed through Beverly Hills occasionally. Almost never actually stopped there. (I left LA in 88, and have only been back a few times since. I miss the weather, and the beach. But, that's about it.) You're not a big spoiler enthusiast, so I won't say anything about the other movies. I do hope you enjoy them. I will gladly watch along with your reactions. Yeah... that was a lot of fun. Thank you for the nostalgia. (I actually don't really miss the 80's, either. But, that's okay. I try to enjoy living in whatever year is currently on tap. (Such as they tend to be, even of late.)) Thank you for the watch, as always. Take care, and have a pleasant evening.
The rest of Murphy’s movies during this era is worth watching. 48 hours, Trading Places are comedic gold. Eddie has made some bad movies but they’re still entertaining.
Your "Robocop" reaction brought me here. It's great fun watching these with you. Billy Rosewood was played by Judge Reinhold-a mainstay of 80s movies. You really should watch "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (If you haven't already, of course) It's a movie that launched a dozen careers. Was anybody funnier than Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli? I've seen that movie fifty times and it's still hilarious. Anyway, think about it. Subbed!
If movies were religion, Beverly Hills Cop would be in that case my creed. I have watched this religiously ever since My late godmother showed this t o me when I was 9.

48 Hours with Eddie and Nick Nolte is a good cop and crook movie. More action/violence but still a satisfying watch.
And that's another one with Jonathan Banks.
What's insane is, Eddie is only 22 here. And in "48 Hours", his first hit, he was like 19 or 20.. yet he was able to play at least 10 years older by force of his charisma and sheer attitude. Beverly Hills Cop 2 is just as good as the first one here.
Beverly Hills Cop 2 is just as good. You have to love Billy Rosewood
Definitely 2 was arguably better than 1 which is rare the sequel being on par with the original

Fun Fact: Axel Foley was originally written as a Sylvester Stallone movie and a straight Ford action flick, but then, when Eddie Murphy was brought on board, it was rewritten to fit his comedy style. Given the film, it worked out for the best.
The Stallone version of the script became the movie "Cobra"
That’s why they have the in-joke of Axel staring at the Cobra poster in Billy’s room
@@mjrose44That happens in the sequel.
The actor who played the guy who killed Axel's buddy Mikey in BHC appeared as a San Francisco undercover cop in 48 HRS.
That's funny - Stallones wife Gitte Nielsen got to play the long legged crook in Beverly Hills Cop 2
Axel F was the main theme song of 1984.
Yeah, Axels theme was all over the radios then.
You'll have to watch the second one, too. Billy in particular is a lot of fun to watch.
P.S. That Police Inspector, Todd, WAS the Chief of the Detroit Police Department. His name was Gil Hill.
Eddie Murphy was one of the funniest during the 80s, he was part of Saturday night live when it used to be good
Fun fact the guy who gave axel the bananas was damon Waynes one of the older brothers of Shawn and MARLON Waynes who did scary movie and white chicks , there older brother keenan ivory waynes and eddie Murphy grew up together in New York and that's why he put damon in the movie . Eddie always made it a point to put up and coming comedians in his movies
The “Super Cop” scene Taggart’s actor John was literally laughing and had to hide it lol
One of the funniest action comedy movies ever made.
dig the reaction
Only saw Beverly Hills part 2 and 3 in a movie theater with mom. I did have the VHS of this sleeper hit. Great performance by Eddie Murphy. Fond memories watching these movies.
Axels theme tune is so iconic to me that it hurts when people hear it and say isn't that crazy frog haha
Right, and most seem to not realise that the tune was actually written for the movie even after they learned that it's called "Axel F."
One of my favorite films from my teenage years. I was 13 the year this was released. I loved the second one as well, but the first is my favorite.
Yes, I'm a HUGE fan of Eddie.
...and a few other kids not by his wife...
I'm so happy you watched this movie. I saw it in the movie theater and it was a totally wild and new ride. Can't wait for you to watch the next one, which I like just a bit better due to the different mood in the environment and music. Great reaction!

There is a 3rd Beverly Hills cop
@@calvinsmalls9777 I stand by my previous statement. 😉

One of the more amazing and unique cop movies from the 80s. I have loved this movie all my life - and Eddie Murphy's best movie work in my opinion. Thanks for doing this, kaiielle!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The scene where Eddie and Lisa Eilbacher are in the warehouse and she laughs. One of the best shots of the prettiest women of all time. ❤️
Jonathan Banks was in TV show where he played a Federal Agent. It was called "Wiseguy."
It's nice to see Ronny Cox play a good guy in this film and its sequel, since he was such a bad guy in Robocop.

That actually was the logo on Detroit police cars back in the 80's.
Amazing 🤣
Christopher Lambert's laugh in Mortal Combat is a close runner up to the laugh of Axel Foley 😀
One of the coolest movies ever, Eddy Murphy was the perfect pick for this role :)
@20:04 Paul Drake (Holdup Man #1) played Mick in Sudden Impact (1983) prior to this. He must have been a flash-in-the-pan, because I haven’t seen much of him since.
@33:12 Simple explanation. He fell down and gravity did the rest.
Great Reaction, and I can't wait until you watch part 2.
Great Reaction To One Of My All Time Favorite Movie's
The man behind the counter of the hotel at the very end of the film is none other than Martin Brest, the director of the film.
Martin absolutely loathed the final freeze-frame, but from what I recall from the DVD audio commentary, the then-owners of the house that doubled for Victor Maitland's home insisted on it.
The cop who said axle I should have known it was you was a real cop
love the line "ak-well foley" from seirge
@15:55 Lisa Eilbacher (Jenny) ad-libbed mocking Eddie’s (Axel’s) laugh. Their responses were genuine.
Bronson Pinchot, the museum guy had his own tv show called perfect strangers
There's a new Beverley hills cop movie coming out next year on Netflix
🚓 (Per your request.)🚔
I've always liked this movie. It came out late in 1984, which was the year I moved out to LA. So, it was fun seeing locations. Of course, I only passed through Beverly Hills occasionally. Almost never actually stopped there. (I left LA in 88, and have only been back a few times since. I miss the weather, and the beach. But, that's about it.)
You're not a big spoiler enthusiast, so I won't say anything about the other movies. I do hope you enjoy them. I will gladly watch along with your reactions.
Yeah... that was a lot of fun. Thank you for the nostalgia. (I actually don't really miss the 80's, either. But, that's okay. I try to enjoy living in whatever year is currently on tap. (Such as they tend to be, even of late.))
Thank you for the watch, as always.
Take care, and have a pleasant evening.
You should definitely check out the next two films. Beverly Hills Cop 2 is my favourite. Axel Foley is still just as extra in it. Lmao 😁
The rest of Murphy’s movies during this era is worth watching. 48 hours, Trading Places are comedic gold. Eddie has made some bad movies but they’re still entertaining.
2 and 3 are my favorite
The actor who played axel friend was in d'jango UNCHANGED
Beverly Hills Cop 2 is a must. I like it a little better.
funny in movies when you start to notice when they holler freeze
Can't wait for you to see Part 2. It's even funnier and you find out more about Billy. It's hilarious
I would love for you to continue the Beverly Hills cop series. I’m enjoying your reactions.
The sequel is the peak of the series. They had like twice as much budget compared to the first one it's kinda more action and a bigger movie overall.
Subbed!
I've seen Fast Times before - great movie! Thanks for watching!
You'll love BHC 2, looking forward to your reaction.
I love that coffee mug!! :)
If movies were religion, Beverly Hills Cop would be in that case my creed. I have watched this religiously ever since My late godmother showed this t o me when I was 9.
I fucking agree
