Hell I’m in my 40s and I still dress as a Ghostbuster for Halloween 😊. So many reactors miss that it’s Peck getting hit by falling marshmallow. GB2 is my favourite.
@@krisfrederick5001 I actually think he is a pretty good actor in general but you are correct that prior to at least 1993 he pretty much just played himself. I feel like Ghostbusters is peak comedy Bill Murray - he does no acting at all, vamps his way through every scene, and ends up completely stealing the movie.
The librarian at the beginning of the film is played by legendary character actress Alice Drummond, who scored her first TV role at the age of 39 and went on to appear in almost 100 TV shows and feature films over her nearly 50-year-long career. She played alongside some of the greats, and will forever be my reminder that it's never too late to pursue a new adventure, career, or passion. RIP 😢
Yeah, that goes for Christopher Lloyd as well. He was about 37 when he made his screen debut (though he already had plenty of stage acting experience before that).

Exactly! It’s NYC. Some random person probably runs up and does that a few times in any given week, even without the Terror Dog being involved. “Hm. Well, there goes another one. Anyway, this filet mignon is quite delicious.”
Great reaction!! Saw this when I was 6...yes, 6...not in the theatre, but on home video (VHS) - instantly fell in love with it! (I've always loved all things macabre!) You're right, some of the comedy only hits when you're older, but the movie really does have a universal appeal (not saying it's a 'family' movie per se, but it's pretty 'tame' from a language & violence perspective) My sister had the soundtrack, which I listened to relentlessly - just awesome! Only certain effects look a tad dated (the demon dogs, you can tell on some shots that it's a composite/stop motion overlay), but considering it's 1984, it holds up very well! My wife and I were so happy to introduce this to our boys - and now it's at least an annual constant, especially around Halloween! So many quotable lines that we use on the regular in our household! And yes - Rick Moranis is awesome here. Did you catch the irony that he's the Keymaster? Considering he's always locked out of his apartment!! Cheers.
Louis/Vince Clortho running away shouting "You'll perish in flames!" is still my favorite moment in the entire movie. Rick Moranis is a GD delight! Everything he says after his possession is hilarious and his line delivery is 🤌 "Yes, have some!"
The difference with _Shrek_ is that was made as a kids' movie with a lot of jokes and satire for adults, whereas _Ghostbusters_ was made as a comedy for adults with a lot of effects and fun factor for kids.
Great reaction to this fun 80s classic... Fun trivia facts - the little girl having a birthday party in the restaurant (of which Lewis/Rick Moranis is trying to get into to escape the terror dog) is none other than pop singer 'Debbie Gibson' in her screen debut. Also, adult p0rn star Ron Jeremy, was one of the extras in the crowd when the Ghostbusters firehouse was being evacuated (you can clearly see him with his signature mustache in the background for 5 seconds). All 4 of the Ghostbusters actors would also appear in Ray Parker Jr. music video for Ghostbusters (1984)...along with many other celebrity cameos (it's definitely worth checking out) 😉
KL: "Well, I think she's gonna miss the date." Me: "Um, yes and no." So interesting that you see a lot of yourself in Louis' character. Glad you had fun with a favourite from my childhood.
The "Slimer" ghost was a relatively small part of the movie but a major character in the cartoon that was popular that followed up the movie for several seasons. Because of this, Slimer had a much bigger role in the sequal.
I have a friend who is restoring a hearse to a Ghostbuster ECTO-1. It looks amazing. He already built a Delorean time machine. Funny that Louis was always locking himself out of his apartment. And he is possesed by the "KEY MASTER".
I love that the prop Egon was using in the library where the arms on the side raise up was used again as a detection device in Star Trek The Next Generation.
The original Ghostbusters is the perfect comedy movie. Perfect casting, acting and writing. The VFX was groundbreaking when it came out. I saw it in the theater when it came out... about 15 times. lol The movie rocks.
I have watched this a billion times and can still recite a ton of the lines. I got into the “real ghostbusters” cartoon and toys… the ecto 1, a bit worn for wear, is still on display on my shelf. I made my own firehouse from pressboard because the official one wasn’t remotely to scale. When “afterlife” came, it felt like the movie was aimed right at me. Egon was, is, and always will be the best one. I do not collect spores molds nor funguses, however.
I wasn’t born in the 80’s and I was a 2000’s kid growing up. But both me and my best friend were huge fans of the movie and I’m still very much to this day. So much so, I got to do a full on cosplay in complete gear and with a custom made uniform for Halloween last year and it was an incredible experience all dressed up for work. So many people wanted pictures and recordings too. And it was truly a dream come true for me to be an authentic Ghostbuster. The little kid in me was ecstatic.
I went and watched this. Wow! This is so much fun. I don't think I've seen anything in last 20 years of life that is this cool or well made. Murray is cool. I agree with you the music was awesome. Got the album now. Mystical music
One last bit of trivia I forgot to mention is that I visited NYC in 2020 (just a couple of weeks before I read a story online about a virus potentially spreading from overseas), and of course I wanted to visit some of the Ghostbusters locations. It doesn't really matter, but I was surprised to find that the movie is roughly geographically accurate. The building that serves as Dana's apartment building really is directly across the street from Central Park and the Tavern on the Green, which is the restaurant that Louis tries to enter when he's being chased by the terror dog. After being possessed, he visits Columbus Circle, which is on the corner down the street from the apartment (also the location of Travis Bickle's attempted move on Senator Palantine in Taxi Driver), and fairly close to that is Lincoln Center, where Dana has her recital and she and Peter talk by the fountain (a fountain which can also be seen in John Wick 2, where Keanu and Common trade silencer shots through the fountain spray). All that to say, no idea whether or not there is actually an apartment on that corner of the building with a window on that side (the movie uses matte paintings and a set to alter the top of the building), but if there were, Dana's view is legitimately what you would see from that spot. 👻
Born in the 80s. I had the proton pack backpack toy, the ghost trap toy, the building toy and the ecto-1 toy. And I loved The Real Ghostbusters cartoon.
Your reactions are lovely as always. What a good movie to react to as well! I was like 8 or 9 when I saw this in the theaters, and it was incredibly popular. Everybody knew this movie, the song, the characters and was a popular Halloween costume. Glad you enjoyed it!!
The difference between Dan Aykroyd's character, Ray, and Dan Aykroyd himself is very minimal. He was essentially written as "what if Dan was an academic instead of a film maker." Similarly, I'm not sure Bill Murray has played any character other than slight variations of Bill Murray. I've always wondered why Peter Venkman would have gone on a date while carrying enough thorazine to knock someone out for several hours. At first I thought maybe he was planning on doing something awful, he's been borderline sleazy up to that point so it's not out of the question, but he turns down Zuul's offer which makes me think it's not something he'd do. I was stumped on this until I watched another reactor who wondered why Peter was always so chill in almost every situation and it dawned on me, the thorazine was for _him_ and he's just on a low dose of it all the time. Also, I find it _highly_ amusing that they made the EPA guy the main human villain.
The scene in the library where the bookshelf fell was left in since it seemed like a paranormal happening even though it was a stagehand walking by that made it fall. The line Bill Murray said was improv as well.
I don't get why some people don't think there isn't any character growth. It's subtle, but it's there. Venkman, for example, goes from a cynical skeptic who thinks of "the supernatural" as a hustle, to being genuinely unnerved by Dana's possession, to yelling "nobody steps on a church in my town." He's also less of a jerk by the end. Egon's big character moment isn't at the end of the film, but around the end of Act II, with the "your mother" line at Walter Peck. We see him go from emotionless, over-analytical stiff, to a moment of rage, to suggesting something potentially reckless - crossing the streams. Not a huge shift, but a change nonetheless.
"I wonder what that actually is, though." Movie slime is often made with the thickener, Methocel (Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), which is a cellulose ether, which can be acquired in food-grade types (although the FDA recommends only small amounts) and used to be used a lot in jelly-donuts. The amount used in water determines the viscosity of the resulting slime, and that was what was used in this film. Great reaction, as per usual, and now you are TOTALLY ready to watch "Epic Rap Battles of History: Ghostbusters VS Mythbusters."
0:38 Ha! I was just going to say that I'm surprised that you hadn't watched this previously. Though now I'm glad you haven't, you're in for a treat here (mostly) with this series. This one in particular is an absolute Classic that I saw in the theater when I was 10 or 11, and it will never get old. 13:38 One of the most Iconic sound effects in Cinematic History, along with the Lightsaber.
The library ghost is named Dr. Eleanor Twitty. The car is a 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor combination car. These types of cars could be used as ambulances or hearses. The green ghost is supposed to be the ghost of John Belushi, a frequent collaborator with Dan Akroyd (Ray). Zuul is voiced by Director, Ivan Reitman.
I heard that music! Trying to be sneaky. Well timed and unexpected. Bravo. Great sense of humor too. The music for the film was done by the legendary Elmer Bernstein, who had worked on the score of tons of huge films from old Hollywood. Movies such as the Ten Commandments, Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mockingbird, and many others.
I was a lad of 14 when this film came out. I literally saw it 37 times in the theater (sometimes sitting through other showings), just to be part of the crowd experience! These were the days when a popular movie would sell hundreds of seats a night, and Ghostbusters was a hot ticket! A friend and I made a bunch of the ghostbuster badges the crew wear on their uniforms and made a tidy profit at showings 😂! Those were great times.
It's interesting how in some instances they maintain the actual geography of Manhattahan. The restaurant that Louis tries to gain entrance to just before becoming possessed by a demon is actually a short distance from the building they use for the facade of Louis's apartment. You cross the street and enter Central Park and then turn to your right and it's a short jog up the way a little bit.
I hope when it comes to watching the 2016 Ghostbusters re-boot that you watched the Extended Cut. While not a great improvement over the theatrical release, it does help the plot make a little more sense in places.
I was 7 when Ghostbusters 2 came out and absolutely loved both, even loved the cartoon as well. Still love it as an Adult. A couple weeks ago I showed both to my 8 year old daughter and she absolutely loved it too. She is now dressing up as a Ghostbuster for Halloween! 👻👻👻
Kaelle: I think I trust Egon the most. Peter: This reminds me of that time you tried to drill a hole in your head... Egon: That wold have WORKED, if you hadn't stopped me.
I watched this as an eleven year-old in the theater. I found Lewis cringey and the ghosts genuinely scary and I absolutely loved the movie. No I never dressed up as a ghostbuster but man I would have loved a proton pack Nowadays of course, I love Lewis' character and Rick Moranis' epic delivery. The entire ensemble top to bottom is fantastic - from the main cast to the the hotel manager and even the alarmed cigar smoker at the elevator. Just a magical bundle of fantasy, comedy, absurdity, and adventure. Never cross the streams and if someone asks you if you are a god, say yes!
Hi KL, glad to see you enjoying this film, this was one of my early VHS rentals in the `80`s. For another comedy film that fits this month, please consider reacting to the 1944 Arsenic & Old Lace, it stars Cary Grant, Peter Lorre & Raymond Massey.
Working girl is a great Sigourney movie. (Incidentally, I'm ashamed to say that only after all these years, watching your reaction, do I notice the packet of stay-puft marshmallows on the kitchen counter when the eggs pop out and fry)
The crowd outside the haunted building was mostly... spontaneous. They had set up a few organized extras (like the Orthodox Jews and a small crowd) but apparently the whole thing grew to almost a party, and they got a huge crowd of extras at the end that just showed up to join in.
I appreciate you are watching all 5 the 3rd movie is often said to be bad. It’s not. While it’s not in the canon universe it’s cast it great the comedy of funny. They all have a great time. I love it.
So, I would suggest watching the whole series... with the probable exception of the third movie. Out of them all, that is the least connected to the overall story and the least well-regarded movie. But yeah, this is one of the movies that I really grew up with, and I love it! Helps that I was born the same year it came out >.>
I remember watching this as a kid when it first came out. They even had a cartoon called "The Real Ghostbusters" and that green ghost, who slimed Peter 14:05, kind of became the Ghostbuster's mascot of sorts. They named him Slimer and he lived with them in the Firehouse.
It's endlessly hilarious that the key master keeps locking himself out of his own apartment. I never noticed this as a kid. I don't blame Rick Moranis for giving up the business for his family. He gave us so many amazing memories. Sorry to crowd but it had to be said. 👻🚫
I would have been almost 10 when this came out. I did see it on cable. If I saw it in "theaters" it probably would have been a drive-in theater. I remember people liking the movie, but as far as dressing up, I never noticed. Even stuff aimed at kids, like The Goonies, we all liked the movie, but we weren't dressing up as them. In my trick-or-treat days, most kids wanted to be something gross with makeup, or a horror movie character.
Was 14 when it came out, saw it in theaters and yes, MANY had Ghostbusters costumes that Halloween. My brother and I were on that list, cardboard boxes as proton packs, we hit a surplus store for overalls and used a Stormtrooper blaster to make the proton pack “wand” as we called it. I happened to have an old ALICE pack frame from scouts I used as my proton pack, turns out it’s exactly what they used for the real ones.
I had no idea you were new to GB. So i had seen the movie casually in the past, as a cosplayer, I decided to really go down a ghostbusters rabbithole so i could make all the costume and gear really legit. Im so glad i did. I adore this franchise. IF you game, consider playing "Ghostbusters The Video Game Remastered" it takes place after GB2 and has an amazing story arc!
The first two are classics, I really enjoyed them. I saw the one with Chris Hemsworth on Netflix, and it was entertaining, but I don't really remember all that much about it, so I can't recall if it adds to the lore.
Didn't go as a Ghostbuster for Halloween, though I did make my own proton pack and ghost trap props. I did, however, go as the villain Sam Hain from the Ghostbusters cartoon for Halloween.
This was so great when it came out. I was 13 and saw it multiple times. I think tickets were $2.50 at the time. Ghostbusters 2 and Afterlife are good too. I still have to see the latest one. If you haven’t seen Stripes you should! It’s another BM and HR flick that’s silly and fun and a snapshot of the time.
I'm always happy when I find a new (to me) reactor that I find genuine and relatable in some way. Just found you, KL. I subscribed and I hope the best for you and you're channel. And yes, I agree, a generously stocked library is a place I could spend all day in. BTW, the PH theme edit in the library cracked me up!
When the movie came out, or more importantly, when we recorded it to VHS, I was awakening as a pubescent male, so the Gatekeeper scenes really stuck with me! The most replayed bit of the tape, though, was when Louis was chased out of his apartment by the animal; the old lady shouts "HO!" and darts back into her door. Played those few seconds so many times, laughing. 👻
My favorite character is Egon, played by the late Harold Ramis. Three years before Ghostbusters, he and Bill Murray co-starred in the comedy Stripes as two friends who decide to join the Army. It also had the late Warren Oates as the senior drill instructor, Sergeant Hulka; John Candy was in it, too. P.J. Soles, who was in the original Halloween and Carrie, and Sean Young, who played Rachel in Blade Runner, were also in Stripes. You should watch the music video for Ghostbusters. It is an awesome video and has a bunch of different celebrities in it. I was 13 when this movie came out and it still remains one of my favorites.

For me the biggest joke in the film is something people rarely even mention, that the guy who keeps locking himself out becomes the key master.
I went and watched this. Wow! This is so much fun. I don't think I've seen anything in last 20 years of life that is this cool or well made. Murray is cool. I agree with you the music was awesome. Got the album now. Mystical music
Im here for all of the Ghostbusters movies this month, even 2016. While not part of the main continuity, was still a lot of fun.
This is such an absolute classic. Even the second one is reasonably good. And I actually quite enjoyed Afterlife.
Great reaction!!! This movie can really go either way for folks. I’m happy you enjoyed it!
The first. The best. The original.
That is a great shirt. Love your reactions!
Thank you! 🤘
I was 7 when this came out and everybody my age loved it. However I did not dress as them for Halloween.
"I wonder what that actually is, though."
Movie slime is often made with the thickener, Methocel (Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), which is a cellulose ether, which can be acquired in food-grade types (although the FDA recommends only small amounts) and used to be used a lot in jelly-donuts.
I was a ghostbuster for Halloween twice. When I was a kid first I had the proton pack and second I had the slime pack.
Love the Fallout reference.
I 100% dressed up as a Ghostbuster for Halloween haha
How on earth did you make it this long without seeing this movie? Well, congrats! You've been slimed. Welcome to the club.
9:22 Only dawned on me the other day that Janine, Annie Potts, is MeeMaw from 'Young Sheldon'. God I'm getting old !
She already looked like MeeMaw in Ghostbusters Afterlife. More so in Frozen Empire.
OMG! We're all getting so old. I watched this movie on VHS in 1986.
Thanks for pointing out Annie Potts as Meemaw
I hope when it comes to watching the 2016 Ghostbusters re-boot that you watched the Extended Cut. While not a great improvement over the theatrical release, it does help the plot make a little more sense in places.
Dialogue in this film is top shelf 👍
I was 7 when Ghostbusters 2 came out and absolutely loved both, even loved the cartoon as well. Still love it as an Adult.
A couple weeks ago I showed both to my 8 year old daughter and she absolutely loved it too. She is now dressing up as a Ghostbuster for Halloween!
👻👻👻
Forgot the 👻!
So awesome!
Very enjoyable reaction. I give it a 99.98%. My only gripe is you edited out Venkman's "dogs and cats" line.
Hard to keep all the good lines in when copyright claims exist!
@kaiielle Yeah, I hear ya. We subs see you guys go through it but we don't really know how rough it can get.
Ghostbusters was HUGE when it came out first movie I ever saw in the theater I was 4 years old. When I was a kid it was my life lol.
"I want you inside me."
"Sounds like you got at least two people in there already." 🤣
Kaelle: I think I trust Egon the most.
Peter: This reminds me of that time you tried to drill a hole in your head...
Egon: That wold have WORKED, if you hadn't stopped me.
Just one of the greatest comedies ever made. imo
The library and the school in the early part of the film is Columbia University. I went to school there and had a part-time job in that library.
Fun fact: the ectoplasmic goop is edible and you can make it in your kitchen.
This has odd implications for the joke at 4:35
I'm a 80s kid. I did not have any of the toys, but i did have the 1984 video game for my Commodore 64 and i watched the 1986 cartoon religiously.
Yes the C64 game. I loved it. Had the Batman '89 game too. Games back then were much more dificult to play imo.
I love it.
Ghostbusters is my answer whenever I’m asked, “what’s your all time favorite movie?” I get little to no argument. 😊
13:06 how many of us in the 80s dressed up as Ghostbusters on Halloween? Heh, all of us, I think! Even when it wasn't Halloween.
There really is such marshmallow company by that name and yes it drawing on package look like that
So, I would suggest watching the whole series... with the probable exception of the third movie. Out of them all, that is the least connected to the overall story and the least well-regarded movie. But yeah, this is one of the movies that I really grew up with, and I love it! Helps that I was born the same year it came out >.>
I said in the intro and review that I'm watching all five and releasing them throughout October!
He’s really an upstanding father, even if he did shrink the kids.
Hi there! Nice to meet ya. Thanks for watching!
13:15 I was born in the 80's and I still dress up as these guys lol
My fave movie of all time.
Don't know if KL recognized Reginald Vel Johnson. He was the cop who said mayor wants to see you. He's Al from Die Hard.
And Carl Winslow from Family Matters 😉
"Guys Fall Into The Hole" sounds like an adult movie I rented in the 90's :o
When the movie came out, or more importantly, when we recorded it to VHS, I was awakening as a pubescent male, so the Gatekeeper scenes really stuck with me! The most replayed bit of the tape, though, was when Louis was chased out of his apartment by the animal; the old lady shouts "HO!" and darts back into her door. Played those few seconds so many times, laughing.
👻
14:00 SLIMER! And I was sooooooo glad you loved this comedy. =) Bill Murray kills every line lol
I'll die on this hill - Stripes is the best Bill Murray movie. :)
Stripes is a great movie!
@@mcjim256 That's the fact, Jack!
Where’d you get your wall lights from? I’d like to get the same one, for the “ghost effect “
The brand is Twinkly!
