Patric Gagne is not what most people picture when they hear the word ‘sociopath’. For example, she’s married and has two children. She’s a functioning member of society. She has friends.
Sociopaths tend to lie, break laws, act impulsively and they have little regard for their own safety because they simply don’t have fear or guilt. All these things are true for Patric.
In this conversation Patric talks to Mia Freedman about the emotions she doesn't feel, the signs that popped up when she was a child and what it's like being friends with a sociopath.
It’s believed just under 5% of the population are sociopaths, that’s one in 25 people. That’s why Patric wrote her memoir Sociopaths, to share what it’s really like.

Innate Human Emotions: Every individual, including those diagnosed with sociopathy or psychopathy, possesses a fundamental set of inherent emotions:
    1. Anger
    2. Anticipation
    3. Joy
    4. Trust
    5. Fear
    6. Surprise
    7. Sadness
    8. Disgust
Acquired Emotional Capacities: Sociopaths typically exhibit deficits in certain learned emotional responses:
    1. Remorse
    2. Shame
    3. Empathy
    4. Love
    5. Guilt

I could really do without 1.2. and 5 absolute bane of my life. Drives me to despair...what's that called? Guilt syndrome

@@oliverbird6914some people learn an excessive or irrational sense of guilt… especially if they grow up with a caregiver who has a similar issue or who can’t assume appropriate guilt and therefor habitually deflect it onto others. The child learns to take on guilt which isn’t theirs. Or to feel entirely responsible for the emotional well-being of others.

I don't think trust is an emotion, but I have ASPD so...maybe I'm wrong

@@emilyau8023 yeah, same, I initially felt similarly, but when you think about it, it’s a disposition like fear but the opposite. So it doesn’t stick out as much, I guess.
If fear is the emotional response to threat, then trust would be the emotional response to someone/something that can be relied upon.
Some people have a trusting sense of life in general I am envious of at times.

This is so interesting. I could be very manipulative as a teenager but stopped at about 17. It was always about getting out of trouble or getting permission to go where I wanted or just sneaking out.

That's why kids can't be diagnosed with ASPD until they're a certain age because it's common for kids to exhibit ASPD traits. They are only diagnosed with oppositional or conduct disorder.
