  • I know it's very different from my usual content, but I really wanted to share a story regarding how I've had to deal with racism and personal experiences with feeling like an outcast. I hope you can watch this video and walk out of it with something that helps you out in your personal life, especially if you're a person of colour.
Let's prove that the statement "People Won't Like You If You're Brown" is a load of crap, yeah?

the end really hit me hard. as a Algerian Muslim with pale white skin and freckles, i feel ashamed that i don't resemble my culture. my school is mostly filled with arab muslims, so i got made fun of for not being darker. i always drew characters with dark skin or tan skin, because i had envy towards them. but this video taught me that i shouldn't have to hate my skin, because no matter what i do or how i act, it will never matter what i looked like. I am Muslim and i am Arab and i'm proud.

I never experienced racism. But, as a brown girl, in my early childhood (I'm still quite young compared to Maaz), the only brown kid on television shows targeted towards my age demographic. It was Ravi, who was constantly described as nerdy, friendless, and just a loser. And occasionally, I'd hear people online mock indian accents. For a while, I wished I was white, I made all my avatars in games with pale skin, because I thought that south asian people with brown skin couldn't look beautiful or handsome, that most of them were losers, and I was somehow the exception because I was born and raised in the U.S. and didn't have an accent. I *dreamed* I was white, literally, in my dreams, I was white. It made me push away from any effort to learn about my culture. I'm glad we're starting to get *something*, but I wish it had been sooner.

Forgive in leave it in God’s Hands, believe in Him with all your heart and He will repay:
“Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.”
      _ Romans 12:19-21
Jesus was middle eastern and spent all his life outside spreading the word of God. Hence, He was a very dark man. If someone doesn't like you for your skin color they will pay for it up there.
If anyone is racist to you or disrespects you always remember this:
“So the last shall be first, and the first last”
      _ Matthew 20:16
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

    I’m black and I relate.
I was never bullied by my peers since this occurred in 4th grade, but my teacher always viewed me as “different” and treated me differently in a bad fashion. She’d view me as dumb and therefore I needed more “help”. It made me feel uncomfortable and set off. My peers were all white so this did make me want to be white. I just wanted to be viewed as an equal. I’d want to straighten my beautiful curls to fit in, or feel pretty.
It’s awful that this happens and I hope my past teacher doesn’t treat people like this.
    (Side note I wasn’t dumb I got straight A’s)

I may not relate to the situation completely, but I relate so much to the pain and feelings. Being an overweight pale filipina girl who's not only that but also the biggest lesbian you'll ever meet was a "reason" people did bad things to me and a "reason" I did even worse things to myself emotionally and physically. Setting my story aside, I'm happy you guys are here, alive and happy. I love everyone who is here doing what they can to help the community, those who speak of the most hurtful things in their hearts to help others, and those who have hope, love, and genuine care for those around the world, regardless of what color they are, their race, beliefs, sexuality etc. I hope you'll all have an amazing life🤎💕

    I'm Asian American.
In elementary, a teacher chastised me for "eating dogs and beating women".
Nearly a decade later, she contacted me in hopes that I would speak to her class since I had graduated in honors.
I declined, listed off why I hated her, and finally took a stand for what both her and my peers had done to me so many years ago.
Edit: forgot I made this three years ago. The teacher was placed on admin leave after she made some questionable Facebook posts about drinking on the job since she taught kids. I don’t know if she still teaches, but her Facebook is deactivated and she no longer works with the school district.

I could relate a lot too. I'm Mexican American and my family is Hispanic.
In Elementary, all was good and I got the best grades, I won our schools spelling bee (even our district spelling bee) I read the most books in my grade. It was all well
Until middle school, there were so many racists and especially teachers who would openly speak out lashing out people of my ethnicity and especially my Language Arts / Theater Teacher, she was horrific. She preferred anyone who wasn't of Mexican descent (our school was mainly 52% Hispanic, 48% Asian, 10% White. She said she endorsed Trump and anyone else was wrong and how Mexicans were useless and how we were disgusting. She said these things hidden though as if she thought we couldn't understand what she really meant. She kept me out from the play production we were putting on and only accepted the lighter skinned people. I begged for her to give me a part but she ignored me every time. One day I had to go to this peer mediation meeting with me and other students and I was the only one in her class that was in it so I asked her if I could go and she said no and to sit down. Furiously since this meeting was important I grabbed my things and said something along the lines of No you racist witch. (May I remind you that I was a goody-two shoes and I never disrespected teachers) My friends in that class went "oooohhh!!!!" And they clapped as I left the room.
Do I regret it? No!!! I'm glad I'm not in Middle school anymore with that bruja.

This was such a great video and is going to open a lot of people's eyes.
Everyone around me at school knows that I'm a White South African. I know that isn't as bad as not being white but it is unbelievable how many racist comments I get. If it is a water joke, how I am white, my parents, or why I got good marks if I'm African. The worst part is that I play along with it. I can't imagine how much worse this is for a Non-White person. The courage to talk about this on the world stage like you did is beyond me. My case is just mild compared to yours and the many people that have had similar or worse.
    Good job.

When Mazz said “if I do it first, nobody else can hurt me” that phrase hit me close to home. In school I was most of the time the black sheep of my class. I had a friend and that was it. And at some point I started to laugh at myself. Joking with them about me and pushing me down. “Auto-bullying” the kind of self defense that doesn’t help but you think it will eventually help.

I loved the video, though. Keep up the good work🤎

Man i dont comment often but the thought you put into this video really touched me Maaz, thank you for representing us in such a beautiful way. We really are outcasts in the world even if we make up practically a fifth of the world population. Even two years finding your video, not much has changed, where we have no representation, Aladdin is our closest role model.
The first thing any person does is judge directly from what they see in another person, and when they see us, they get the same bullet points, Bollywood, Arranged Marriages, curry, terrorists. We are put in such boxes that we are unable to break free from such stereotypes, and people assume this is who we are, that it is somehow alright to generalize all us brown people like that.
Being a Bengali American born and raised, and never once considered an American from the get-go because im not White and Black is infuriating, but something I had to learn to accept all my life.
As strange as this may sound but the world isnt just Black and White, but all shades that are all different in their own way. I also feel for our other fellow brown people, the Latin people of the world, they are also underrepresented and just dont get the exposure they deserve. Just saying Latin, brings so many countries and cultures that summarized into one simplified word. But its far vast than that, with so many rich histories just waiting to be heard.
Anyway thank you, for this video, we have to keep staying positive in the hopes that one day we each can show ourselves proudly, and not just be instantly judged by what we look like, but be treated as our own unique individual who happens to have their own culture. We are just as much an "average Joe" as the next, we dont expect different special treatment, just let us be, and not be concerned about how we look, heck come up to us, talk to us,we are more than willing to share and enjoy others companies.

They should understand how you feel see their life in your shoes. As an african american they'll ask/say crazy things if their true or whatever I say be who you are no body can change that and if it gets out of hand tell the right people about. I don’t like rap music, I don’t like anything spicy, I watch anime, I like watching Dreamteam and I constantly get bullied for it. People repeatedly ask “why are you being so white?” and “act more like your race” and I really can’t fucking stand it. I’ve once forced myself to eat takis and I was sick for days. I am an Indian, I haven’t ever lived outside of India, but my relatives who do, face the exact same problem. Despite the fact that my family despises Pakistan in general, I see how the people there are just that, people. They face the same issues we do. The government might be broken, awful and unlawful, but the people are just as brainwashed about us as we are about them. For the first time, I felt so connected to a Pakistani guy. This has genuinely given me a new perspective. I have and probably will continue to condemn the behaviour Muslims in various countries show, but I promise to never associate their acts with a whole religion. This has opened my eyes so much, just beautiful.

You are seriously my all time favourite UA-cam animator. It’s not only how funny I think you are, but also how relatable. I myself am a half Éthiopien half Swedish girl who is also brown. In all the years I’ve been in school so far have been like this. As soon as I first got to my class almost everyone was white, I felt very out of place. But there was this one girl who was sort of light skin (half Jamaican half Swedish) who I immediately got attached to. Me and her were always there for each other which felt amazing, the only problem was that we were exactly like you. We joked about our own race calling each other and ourselves slaves, criminals and the n-word. And again, it was only because no one else could do it first. I mean of course even if we did joke about all the things people think the brown community is like our classmates as well could scream the n-word if we walk by or just say it to our face. Every time some white dude in our class said the word another white guy in their group would run up to us and ask if we heard what the other guy said, what do you expect us to do instead of just awkwardly laugh it off? It’s also frustrating when they ask for the “n-word pass” every time we have a conversation. This one time a dude in my class who’s also brown (I think is thaïlandaise and Swedish) sat normally at his desk while we were about to watch a movie. When a guy ran up and turned off the lights an other dude screamed so everyone heard “WHERE DID (brown guy in my class) GO?!!” and then everyone laughed. Both me and my brown girl friend looked at each other and then at him who was awkwardly laughing with them. It’s so frustrating to hear and so upsetting to see this happening to us. Plus when we read about historical facts and about slaves everyone always cracks up and looks at us three. (Where the only brown people in our class)
Last thing is that this happened not long ago but me and my brown girl friend have sadly become distant because we couldn’t cope with our depression together and ended up toxic. It’s been hard these couple months and now I don’t have a friend to relate to and talk to about these things. That’s why I’m happy you brought it up and it always makes me so happy to see this video. 🤎

There is a misunderstanding on what racism truly is. Throught this video, there wasn't any actual racism, just his assumptions of when people were trying to be racist. I also didn't enjoy this video much. If you need me to explain more in detail, please send me a nice comment and I will elabroate. Have a nice day 😃!
Edit: When you read some of the replies to my comment, you will see that random 10 year olds are incompetently ignoring the facts that I have presented to pursuit their own narrative with pure ignorance. I reccommend that these individuals do their own research to understand what true racism is, and not to classify everything as racism and bash anybody who has a different ideology.
Something you can also notice is that I said my statement in the most kind way, while the ignorant 10 year olds here are simply being egregious without a cause. This is how you know they have nothing to say in their favor
