  • Howdy all!
    I wanted to share out my latest video for a fantastic preventive maintenance piece for your car. This oil catch can works across many models of BMW, not just my N55 F32 435i. Check it out for N54, B48, S55, S63tu motors and more.
    BEFORE you can't potentially drive your car, double check your PCV hose as I mention in the video. Mine instantly broke with a little pressure due to age and heat. Check yours before you potentially cant drive your car to go GET a replacement.
    I wish this had been one of the very first mods on my car, and if I had, then I no doubt would have a lot less build up on my valves. This really should be seen a preventative work, and done as early as you can to cut down on valve buildup. If I had installed one of these years ago, I might be able to avoid the walnut blasting, or chemical cleaning routine on my valves.
    Every time I get my oil changed from now on, I will pull the catch can and clean it out.
    Sincerely, do this today! BMS has these for quite a few models, N55, N54, B48, S55, S63tu and more. Do this today!

    Just want to add a trick on How to NOT LOSE THE SCREW in the Vent Hose attachment tight space: Used Plastic film Food Wrap ~4"x8" (Masking tape also work). Fold in half for increased strength. Pierce the screw in the middle area of Plastic Wrap, next attach the screw to the Torx screw. Wrap the Plastic around the Torx Screw extension. Now it is much easy to put it in place without losing it. When it tightened, removing the excessive plastic wrap.

    THANKS for the info on the breather hose. I decided to order one, before I checked it on my 16 435. I changed it yesterday. After the new one was in I checked the old one and yep.. it cracked to pieces in my hand.
    FYI.. that screw on the bottom is a real pain. But I did get it out and back in.
    FYI... again, its a T25.

    sorry to revive an old vid with a comment but...
    i replaced the pcv/ccv hose today, getting it ready for the BMS OCC that shows up in a few days, and not only did this hose snap about where yours did, but when i had my arm down below to wiggle the bottom out, my elbow was pressing on the coolant reservoir return line and that snapped as well. FROM THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ENGINE ON THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE (on the driver side of the engine bay), NOT THE RESERVOIR SIDE!!!
    i suspect it already had a hair line crack in it. i wasn't overly applying weight on the hose at all, matter of fact i barely touched it, then i hear the sound of pressurized liquid, look up and see all that juicy BMW coolant spraying at the radiator lol. What would've been a $140 part from my local BMW dealer, came out to be just over $60 because my brother used to work there. Whew!
    i advise everyone here, buy one from ECS or FCP for $40 even if you don't need it today, because one day you will, and your local BMW dealer is gonna take advantage of you. ECS for the BMW ccv hose for $70, or get the Rein for $43 from FCP, the dealer quoted me $170, $80 with my brother's discount.
    I went with the Rein CCV hose. Fitment was tough because the hose is THICK AND SUPER STIFF. I'm not sure if the BMW version is like this, but I struggled getting the top portion clipped into the valve cover because you have to push and clip it into the valve cover at a pretty extreme angle. I had to loosen the bottom T25 screw out but not completely, clip the top into the valve cover, and then screw the T25 down while periodically making sure it was evenly seating back into the intake hose by wiggling and pressing it in, screw, wiggle+press, until the T25 sat flush and had resistance.
    hope this helps someone!

    Great video, and yes my PVC vent hose was as flexible as a big cheeto when i did this install. But, because of this video i ordered one before and had it on hand before i started - so thanks so much for the referral. So have you done any chemical cleaning of the valves like with seafoam spray? I was think of doing this but i can't find any reasonable place to spray. Any suggestions?

      Happy to help, and pleased that you could avoid the !#$!#$#$!!! AAAAAAHG run to the dealership before the closed like I did.
      So I haven't tried any of the cleaners yet and really hear mixed reviews on the N55 and cleaning. Some folks walnut blast, which gives the owner of my local shop the shivers. They do chemical cleaning only, but some special system, but also rarely do it on N55s! So really not sure honestly.

    Do you just do the reverse of this to clean the oil catch can every oil change?

    • @BMWDIYGuy
      @BMWDIYGuy  3 роки тому +2

      Even easier, just unscrew the can from the top. If you can't get your fingers in, just pull the bolt that holds it to the frame, dont need to disconnect hoses.

  • @regginnn2123
    @regginnn2123 3 роки тому +1

    How do you do your oil change? Do you take this entire thing off then drain and fill the oil?
    Is the vent tube in the description the hose you replaced? So I should order the $50 tube and the oil catch can at the same time?

    • @BMWDIYGuy
      @BMWDIYGuy  3 роки тому

      So you can clean out the can any time, separate from oil changes. Just carefully unscrew the can, and dump out. The breather hose itself gets very fragile, so be prepared to replace it, and yeah I would consider just changing it regardless. Part number is in the description.

  • @ryano7765
    @ryano7765 3 роки тому +1

    So it looks like it will be almost impossible to unscrew the canister to empty it. It looks like a complete uninstall to empty and then reinstall. The other side of the engine bay, there is plenty of room to mount the oil catch can where you would be able to unscrew it and empty it at ease.
    Is it not recommended to install it so far away from the original position? Is that going to affect flow or create problems if longer hoses are used?

    • @BMWDIYGuy
      @BMWDIYGuy  3 роки тому

      Great questions. I don't know if hose length would be an issue, but the OEM hose would have to be 2 or 3x longer, then the return of equal length. I can get the can off with fingers under and around, then it screws off and back on.

  • @noobracing321

    • @BMWDIYGuy
      @BMWDIYGuy  Рік тому +1

      Depends on your car and local conditions as well. Even for the folks that say the N55 and newer engines don't need/require these, I disagree. (The N54 desperately needed this)
      Even if the total is small, its just one more way to incrementally support your motor. Any time you pull your N55 or S55 charge pipes you find oil in them, and I like to keep as much of that as possible out of the engine, injectors and valves.
      For me, its cheap but effective upgrade.
