HOW TO INSTALL AN OIL CATCH CAN ON YOUR BMW (Mishimoto N55 Direct Fit)

  • For this 1 series track inspired build we decided to try out the mishimoto n55 direct fit oil catch can. Installing an oil catch can allows the intake to burn less blow by and keep the valves cleaner. It's great to install a catch can soon after a walnut blast to keep direct injection engines intake valves clean. We ran into a few issues with the install but for the most part it is "direct fit". This DIY can be used on most n55 engines but we are installing it on a 2012 BMW 135i with the N55 engine.

    If you struggle with the four clips on the PCV hose, you can cut up a small zip tie and wedge it under each clip, then just pull. For me it was the only thing that worked.
    You also don't need to remove the cabin air filter or cowl for this job

    • @smith0426
      @smith0426 2 місяці тому

      On second thought, if you're just going to cut off the hose, you may be able to just leave both ends connected

    great vid!! thank you!
    you might be able to use two hose claps, one to either side of the of the pressure line to tighten and just slightly squish the hose reducing the hose height and allowing the pressure line to fall into place better - unless of course there is a reason to keep the hose perfectly round.

    you can use a "U" turn connected from that heater to the catch can made from copper fittings and use 2 small pieces of hose..... instead of a long and twisted hose

    The n55 engine hardly spills oil through the vent hose. When i did a full valve cover replacement as i took that side turbo vent hard plastic pipe where he routed the long hose. I removed that small crankcase vent hose that he sliced on both ends to attach both hoses and looked inside the that intake pipe where it connects. I notice it very clean with just very very noticable thin line of oil dripping but the whole pipe was clean. This means that the previous owner who already had put in 80k miles on it never took the turbo charge pipe off nor inspect it because i replaced the oil licking Vale cover for the first time. So yes the n55 really doesn't need an oil catch can!
    BMW solved that n54 oil engine problem with the upgraded n55 engine!

    • @thefuzzyfupa1
      @thefuzzyfupa1 3 роки тому +1

      If you have a n55, remove the MAP sensor. Check and see if there is any oil on it. If there is then a oil catch can is needed. BMW didn’t solve much issues by upgrading to the N55, just created new ones

    Rather than do another video for alternatives on the N55, can you do one on setting up a catch can on an N54? I have seen a lot of stuff where people slap one on between the flapper tube and the intake in the back, but as I understand it there is an internal port "machined" in the valve cover which is where most of the oil blow-by / carbon build up comes from. From what I have also seen, there are a few videos on how to plug up those ports but it would be great to see a start to finish video from someone like you who is not just tinkering on a one-time hobby.

    Great video! Would be awesome to see how effective this is after a few thousand miles. I read some forum posts that claimed this was not needed on the N55 motors. But I didn’t see any proof one way or the other. I know the N54 folks benefit a lot from this...

    Anyone here has got experience with the freeze-up of the catch can setup in cold climates under short distance usage of the car?
    As with the N55 carbon build-up does not seem to be such a great deal as with the N54 it wouldn't be worth the hassle if I seriously risk blocking up the whole ventilation in winter which would cause a real mess.

      These engines have direct injection. And because of the turbo, it will definitely reduce carbon build-up. I don't know at what mileage interval BMW does recommend a walnut blast at the 1,6 3 cylinder.....You have to call them. And btw, a walnut blast at the dealership is way too expensive anyway.

    I hate that these are necessary. Seems like sloppy work from all of these D.I. engines. I think the manufacturer wants to sell intake valve cleaning services.
    So much fragile plastic, it's like they want everything to break.
