But what I loved most, is the minutia with which you go into all these subjects, the analysis and sense of detail your provide that are usually skipped (the working environment, time slot allocation, the sharing of feelings, the everyday life that gets in the way etc), all of that makes it so real and extremely helpful. Mick, my first instinct was to implore you to stop apologizing for the "indulgence"... but what I really hope is that you'll eventually stop *feeling* like it's an indulgence. This is exactly the kind of "content" I count on from TPS. Pedals, amps, lessons on impy-dancing, double-tracking, theory lessons, songwriting/recording, etc. etc. and so forth... they're all just different access points to making music. What I enjoy, and based on much of the feedback I'm not alone here, is hanging out with like-minded folk who enjoy nerding out about the same stuff I enjoy nerding out about. It reminds me of the origin story you've shared about TPS itself, actually. Ultimately, it becomes less about the specific topic or subject-matter and more about who you're nerding out with. I really hope you and Dan keep following the path that's right for you, because it's the joy (and sometimes frustration) of the journey, and the discoveries along the way (sometimes about gear, sometimes about ourselves) that keeps me coming back. JFDI. I'm just happy to be along for the ride. Also, perhaps more "on-topic," I loved the finished track, and watching this inspired me to lay down a new part on my own months-long-in-the-making track. @@ThatPedalShow Mick, I look back at my favorite albums from my favorite groups... They seem to have one thing in common. I prefer the first (and sometimes the 2nd) album the group released. I like the less produced, more natural and sometimes simpler feel and sounds of those songs over the much more heavily produced offerings from those same groups. Just my thoughts.... Thanks for sharing your work here with us. It turned out great.
Takes quite a big yam sack to sing, much less record the process. Really enjoyed watching the process and the outcome. Great tune. Proud you let us in.
Just wanted to say that as a singer songwriter, I really enjoyed these songwriting videos. I hope to see one or two more of these post lockdown. Well done Mick.
Been a longtime fan of TPS but I'm not usually the type to comment. But as someone who's been rolling out of bed and blankly staring at the guitars and mics lately, this might be one of the videos I needed most. Great tune Mick, sounds like "Good Riddance" meets "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" and I mean that as a compliment!
Easily one of my favorite episodes. I love when you take all the things you’ve shown us over various episodes and use them to actually create music. Similar to the episodes where you actually jam a song together as part of showing off gear, this is so inspiring and such a great addition to the content you regularly provide. Keep it up, gents!
Great video, and fantastic song! Really admire how brave you are showing the whole vocal recording "naked" , without slapping a ton of reverb and autotune on it. It really gives the song that natural, close and intimate feel. Congrats!
Auto tune is soooooo interesting. It’s arresting to hear an old school vocal now from a ‘normal’ record.... because basically all pop music is fixed to the nth degree. I don’t want to say it’s a bad thing, but whenever I hear a really great singer without it, always a tear in my eye. Can’t even listen to Aretha in the car any more. Crash hazzard!
such a fun and interesting behind-the-scenes view of the whole process. Thanks as always for sharing it all with us and being transparent with your emotions. great song to boot!
Ah Mick... This is exactly the reason I adore That Pedal Show, yourself and Dan. I can definitely relate to the feeling of being stuck in that rut, and not feeling inspired to write, play, record or want anything at all to do with music. I have to honest, I started to get a bit of a spark when I watched Dan video on recording acoustics, but that spark has to turned to a raging fire after watching this video. It's been a quite a long while since I've had any inspiration, just sit here and stare at all these guitars and gear and wonder what it's all for. So THANK YOU! Mick for lighting that fire and for your inspiration.
So many things to relate to in this - from the perfectionist, detail-oriented-verging-on-OCD conscientiousness to the self doubt...all of which all too often get in the way and stop us from finishing...or even starting for that matter! But you pushed through, persevered, and look at the outcome! Fantastic and inspiring, as always. Thank you!
The only thing I didn`t like was when Mick said that this would be `the last of the involved vlogs` we`d see in a while. These are as cool as the show itself. TPS has evolved. It`s not `just a show about gear` anymore- it`s a community. We love everything you guys post and learn from it all. Much respect and appreciation, guys! Cheers
Great job, love the song! I appreciate so much that you put yourself out there and artistically expose yourself. It's not an easy thing to do, so thank you!
MATE!!!!!!!!! this is one of the most inspiring videos i've seen in a long time. It was truly a pleasure to get in you head and see the process that goes into making music. I hope that we get to hear more of your music in the future. Thanks so much for recording this. Cheers
Mick, I wanted to tell you that your thoughtful manner and willingness to put yourself out there in spite of the doubts and insecurities (that we all carry around) are absolutely inspiring. Thanks for all you do, and from a random audience member, I hope you realize that the human factor and casting the wider net to music and life is the most redeeming factor of TPS. Pedal minutiae is excellent as well, but not worth much in isolation. Cheers!
Thanks so much Chris, I really appreciate this. That we can be among a community where straight gear talk isn’t the point is a massive driver for me and Dan. It warms our hearts that lots of people seem interested and choose to spend their time here. Thanks for being with us!
No apologies for “self indulgence”...doesn’t feel that way to me anyway. If anything this content is very relatable - it gives voice to what I expect many of us feel. Explaining your experiences through the process was pretty inspiring and made me want to pick up my acoustic guitar and see what comes out. Thanks for sharing Mick! PS. The multi tracked acoustic guitars were beautiful
I could add some long comment about blah blah blah. But I have three things. A: I never imagined the process to be so long 2: I didn’t know you could sing that well 3: it was beautiful man. I loved it, especially for times like these. It was great. Cheers brudda
Mick, thank you for sharing this. There is so much to connect with and empathise with here. For me, you have captured those familiar internal battles in words and music. It helps to address the inner demons, knowing that we all feel it too.
That was awesome Mick! Really enjoyed the whole vlog and the song! The episodes where you and/or Dan create music are some of my favorites, no apologies necessary.
Great stuff Mick man... taters are always gonna tate. Just keep on being the love buddy, it lights up the world. Heaven knows we need all the lights on that we can get down here. 👍🔥🎸🎼💥🚀⚡🔥🙏
Brilliant video, captures the real trials and tribulations of self recording. As frustrating as it is, when you get something at the end of the process it's just the greatest feeling. Great track too Mick 👍
Awesome, thanks for putting yourself out there Mick, social media has some of the worst critic's so I'm glad you had the drive to do this. Then again, TPS fan's are all, kick a$$, so we love what you do. Cheers from across the pond, looking forward to many more videos from you guy's. Peace and Love.
We are in such great company Scott. Dan and I talk about it sometimes. I think the fact we don’t really do click bait and cheap gear for the sake of it, a lot of the nasty people just aren’t interested. We feel very lucky to be among you!
A couple things I gotta say. One: song is dope. Two: to take, what 4 days to create, from a simple chord progression & some scribbled down lyrics to a full band arrangement on your own is not slow it's impressive. Three: The bit about being "shattered" and the thing about people who work with their physicality scoffing at the draining work of creativity is rubbish. At least from my perspective. I have always worked with my hands, and find that regardless of the difficulty I can keep going harder & for longer then when I sit down and WRITE. Whether that be music or not. The process of creation & thought is more draining than sustained physical exertion. Or at least it can be especially if, as is usually the case, creative endeavors are specifically for YOU; your enjoyment, your mental health etc. And to take that & slap a time limit or even an intention; to force creativity to work for you when it's uncommon is a far bigger strain than a physical one.
Thank you Sam, I really appreciate that. Weirdly, I’ve learned through my dog that it gets way more tired when I engage it’s brain than when I run her up and down the field. Ha! Thanks man!
I think the part I dread most about singing is hearing myself. I honestly and truly HATE the sound of my own voice, but I've been told it's quite good; so I try my best to overcome that limitation.
I could psycho analyse this. But the conclusion is..... accept what is and let it be. Be you, don’t judge it and be free to be yourself. So easy to say. And impossibly hard to do... until you do it and realise what a life changer it is! Good luck!
Hi Mick, many many thanks for sharing the trip. Once the angst, technical bits, real life limitations and time have faded, it comes down to this: you created-from thin air-an authentic, heartfelt song, and then made it beautiful.
"The dog ate my larynx" "My tux didn't come back from the cleaners" That's it I'm priting them on a shirt or two and giving 'em to my singer as his birthday present.
This hits home in so many places for me and I suspect anyone who has labored over music will identify with the idea that even when we work alone at it we're not alone in how it feels. Won't go on about that but a helpful mentor from many years ago told me something that has really stuck and I try to remember. His words, "Done is better than perfect." Well done indeed, Mick.
In the middle of a pretty major lockdown lack of inspiration slump just now, this could be just the video I was needing. That, and lockdown to ease off enough in the next few weeks that I can actually meet up with the guys in my band for the first time in six months.
Dear Dan and Mick, for me That Pedal Show is not just talking about pedals and gears..it's your passion and effort to make us (common people who Mick talked about during this video - the one with job, family duties and other things like that that make us battle with time) keep our pasison and desire to play and be crative. These are though times, difficult for us as individuals ( we had to think as communitiy, genre, humanity) and we had to choose and make sacrifice. Also, maybe we had all the time we needed to be creative, and without your inspiration and ideas and everything beautiful you bring to the surface of our mind i think we had less more chance to grow and be that kind of creative. Yes, your show is important, but not only for the pedals and gears and geek chat. It's because of you two: with all you fragilities and doubts too. Thank you, so much. From a post rock player. (no vocals, it's just an excuse)
Dude, I watch you and Dan a lot. You nailed it. It matters not what others think about your music, skill, or product. The truth is that music is a gift given first to us. Then it's given to others. Man, just keep preaching it bro. Keep preaching it. It's all about that feeling that something is inside of you that is trying to get out. Who cares if it's been a day, week, or even years. When the animal needs to get out, you take it for a walk!
that's perfect. if the emotion compels you to create, i know we all want to be understood, but still... you have achieved the satisfaction of bringing a subjective emotional reality into this existence. you have brought something of yourself, your internal self, to life. how beautiful. we do this, in some part to be understood. sometimes we are, sometimes we're not. i believe, and think i've experienced, that the universe, existence, knows us intimately. my earliest memories are of creating music for this entity, existence, to hear as a gift from me, my brother and sis.
It’s rare to be an excellent guitarist AND have a good singing voice. Bravo! You have both, this song has hit potential and you as a songwriter methinks. More please. So helpful seeing your process: thank you!
Absolutely love hearing you sing and play, Mick! This is a lesson I'm currently (after doing music live and in the studio for 50 years) (re)learning: that it's really about sharing myself, and the instruments, equipment, recordings, practice, perfection, etc....are only tools to support that. Thank you.
I've been watching this video all day in 30sec chunks between things. I love TPS, but I've come to really enjoy these vlogs. This one genuinely made me a little misty. I can relate well to the two sides of solitary recording. I think you've hit the nail on the head in your analysis of the process. Enjoyed the song. I think you've inspired me to do one of my own for once, singing and all. Have a restful weekend, if possible :)
Man, I really love your singing voice. It’s so connected to who you seem to be as a person, with very little affectation or any of that nonsense. Just pure, genuine and sincere. This is so good. Thank you.
I really see a music video for it. A young couple. Driving the car. Sunsets, dawns. Smiles, sunshines. Simple basic road things. Simple joys. The real life and happiness with what you have. Not all that commercial stuff. Pleasing, kindness, happiness, love, etc. Damn I want to film this video but never did something like this before. And the view from my window is more suitable for post apocalyptic than that shiny things... So it goes
@@ThatPedalShow I just listened to the song at the end of the video (the black screen was actually a good solution) and saw it all. The west coast of the US as scenery. Congrats Mick! You did it! I so identify with the struggle. Giving birth to the song is more important than any pedal. Thanks for the inspiring reminder and a roadmap to getting it done.
Thank you for taking us on the journey and perhaps baring a bit more than you were comfortable with. My first thought, only knowing you guys from YT, was "damn, Mick can sing!" I've shared this one with my long time collaborating, hobby musician, best friend, and with luck this will continue to inspire me to be less of a collector and more into writing and recording (or more of a collector with equally increased writing and recording). Much love and admiration!

@@ThatPedalShow that's fantastic, lol. yup, i get it...
Great work Mick! I appreciate you sharing your journey.
Mick has quite a good voice. Better than expected.
Thanks Duncan!
Great advice on picking a vocal harmony. Cheers
I need a t-shirt with 'TPSJFDI' on the front. Cheers from the Big Apple.
Let’s do this. In fact let’s JF do this.
I’ll buy one!
Hell yes!!
Yes!
I fifth this motion, which I believe carries it. Meeting adjourned.
such a fun and interesting behind-the-scenes view of the whole process. Thanks as always for sharing it all with us and being transparent with your emotions. great song to boot!
THANK YOU for putting in the work, and it's a fantastic song, thank you for this, be blessed my friend.
YES! Jim, that’s the best thing anyone can say to us - that something we’ve done has inspired you to play or record or write. Job done! Thanks man!
Cheers
Thanks Ricardo. Feedback duly taken! Vlogs will continue! :0)
@@ThatPedalShow Right on! Loved the song, btw. Listened to it quite a few times already. Thanks for sharing, mate!
Really really great episode. I appreciate your vulnerability and honesty, you’re both great influences. Thanks for sharing your song with us.
Thank you!
Thanks so much for being ur authentic self and giving advice and hope to those who are in need of it.
Cheers Johnny. Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job, love the song! I appreciate so much that you put yourself out there and artistically expose yourself. It's not an easy thing to do, so thank you!
Thank you Branton!
MATE!!!!!!!!! this is one of the most inspiring videos i've seen in a long time. It was truly a pleasure to get in you head and see the process that goes into making music. I hope that we get to hear more of your music in the future. Thanks so much for recording this. Cheers
Your talent is as huge as your self doubt. The first is inspiring the latter makes you very humble. Thank you for both. 👏
Blimey, thank you!
Mick your an inspiration to the rest of the guitar community, and a very genuine person. Brilliant well done.
Thank you Roger, I am humbled by all the love today. Thank you kindly!
"I was sat in a traffic jam on mill road" having lived in Cambridge I felt that in my soul
I guess it’s all useful time in the end! Ha!
Thank you Sean! I’m glad it’s got you wanting to make music. Perfect result!
Good tune. Thanks for having the brass ones to share it and the process with us! You've inspired me.
I could add some long comment about blah blah blah. But I have three things.
A: I never imagined the process to be so long
2: I didn’t know you could sing that well
3: it was beautiful man. I loved it, especially for times like these. It was great.
Cheers brudda
Thank you!
Thank you Dave! Hope you’re well man. :0)
Great stuff Mick man... taters are always gonna tate. Just keep on being the love buddy, it lights up the world. Heaven knows we need all the lights on that we can get down here. 👍🔥🎸🎼💥🚀⚡🔥🙏
Thank you! Feeling the love, and right back atcha!
Some bloke had too many pints and accidentally hit the “thumbs down.” Don’t mistake that a as criticism. Good show!
Haha! We have a serial hater. I really hope they watched this one. /0)
Brilliant video, captures the real trials and tribulations of self recording. As frustrating as it is, when you get something at the end of the process it's just the greatest feeling. Great track too Mick 👍
Almost forgot to say, really dug the song too. You should not be shy, you have more talent than 90% of what's in the charts
Ha! Thank you. I’m sure that’s not true but I appreciate it!
@@ThatPedalShow it really is true. Being able to sing and play is a talent in it self. I've been trying for 20 years, still can't do it.
Ha! Nor could BB King. True story!
Ha! Thanks man!
Loved it! Vocal warmup and psych was awesome and real. That was a lot, a lot of work, and not lost on the video itself. Thank you. :)
Good luck!
+r3ngokuking John Lennon famously hated the sound of his own voice, so you're in good company.
Hi Mick, many many thanks for sharing the trip. Once the angst, technical bits, real life limitations and time have faded, it comes down to this: you created-from thin air-an authentic, heartfelt song, and then made it beautiful.
"The dog ate my larynx"
"My tux didn't come back from the cleaners"
That's it I'm priting them on a shirt or two and giving 'em to my singer as his birthday present.
Hahahaa!!
"The dog ate my larynx... at birth!"
Thank you Cliff!
In the middle of a pretty major lockdown lack of inspiration slump just now, this could be just the video I was needing. That, and lockdown to ease off enough in the next few weeks that I can actually meet up with the guys in my band for the first time in six months.
YES! I think we’re all hanging on for that David. We can’t wait!
@@ThatPedalShow The mass outpouring of relief and music when we can all say 'We're getting the band back together' is going to be quite something!
Mick, thank you for sharing the beautiful frailties of humanity, taking us on the journey with you & a wonderful song. 🙏
Slide guitar. Yep makes complete sense in the track.
That bridge had me tearing up. Love it man! You have a good voice. Especially when you push it. Has a good grit.
Some people's slump are the lofty peaks of other travellers.
Thank you Francesco. It gives us great heart that this video has been accepted with such warmth and connection. Thank you for the kind thoughts!
Just recording a song I wrote in 1987 atm! Never had a year in which I've finished so much music.
Thank you Steve - feeling the love!
"These jeans are too tight" literally made me lol
I have genuinely heard a singer say that. Hahahaha!
I think everyone watching this appreciates the work you put into this and being vulnerable about that work.
Thank you Jesus.....you are back.
I of course like the pedal related videos and the tone ones, but really like that kind too. Thanks Mick. And thanks for that song.
I have the opposite problem. Im constantly recording and I like my recordings. But very few others seem to care.
that's perfect. if the emotion compels you to create, i know we all want to be understood, but still... you have achieved the satisfaction of bringing a subjective emotional reality into this existence. you have brought something of yourself, your internal self, to life. how beautiful. we do this, in some part to be understood. sometimes we are, sometimes we're not. i believe, and think i've experienced, that the universe, existence, knows us intimately. my earliest memories are of creating music for this entity, existence, to hear as a gift from me, my brother and sis.
It’s rare to be an excellent guitarist AND have a good singing voice. Bravo! You have both, this song has hit potential and you as a songwriter methinks. More please. So helpful seeing your process: thank you!
Wow, thank you!
Perfect, just poured myself a beer.
Cheers!
@@ThatPedalShow cheers mate, and thanks - a joy to watch and listen, as always.
So inspirational Mick. I needed this one today. I can relate to this VLOG soooo much. Thank you, thank you and thank you!!
The strum part gave me some Skid Row vibes.
Absolutely love hearing you sing and play, Mick! This is a lesson I'm currently (after doing music live and in the studio for 50 years) (re)learning: that it's really about sharing myself, and the instruments, equipment, recordings, practice, perfection, etc....are only tools to support that. Thank you.
"The dog ate my larynx" 😂😂😂
Hahahahah!!!!
So it goes
Sounds awesome Alex, I like it!
@@ThatPedalShow I just listened to the song at the end of the video (the black screen was actually a good solution) and saw it all. The west coast of the US as scenery.
PS: Mick you are awesome talented person. Everything will be alright. I'm 32 and I have had and still have many this mental s**t like you and other kind. I know how it su**s. But don't give up. Keep pushing. In the end of the day, the real deal is a good old things known throughout thousands of years. Just simple basic stuff. The real ones. The ones that matter.
You so often inspire us to plod on when it's difficult. If this had been "the making of" with a famous artist, interesting, but we can actually see ourselves in you and Dan. Sure, you are now famous to us, but remain one of us. Thank you.
Ah man, thanks Angus!
@@ThatPedalShow I should have added, it is a really special, empathic song and you sound great. Sitting in your car back then you were already tapping into the present moment.
Ha! "There was an earthquake, a friend came in from outta town" - I totally read that in Joliet Jake's voice. [edit] Note to self, read comments before commenting[/edit]
Yes! He’s always in my brain. :0)
Enjoyed the video from start to finish, love the final product! Felt all your pain throughout, awesome Mick, awesome.
0:30 Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake, a terrible flood, locust's. It wasn't my fault!! I swear to God!!
Yes! I didn’t Google it. Just the ones I could remember hahahaha!!!
@@ThatPedalShow i’ve seen that movie a million times haha!
I reckon I’m on about a half million. Time to make it 500,001 I think. :0) SCMODS?
You are so talented Mick! The song sounds amazing and I'm feeling inspired to try something like this on my own. TPS has been something to happily look forward to this past year, so cheers to you and Dan for continuing to post videos every week.
Thank you David. It’s awesome that TPS helps with inspiration. Makes us very happy!
Thanks so much for this vlog Mick. Showing the creative process with all its insecurity and watching you pushing through it is a gift. Thanks for being brave enough to be vulnerable and share that with us all. 🙏
👏Well done for getting this done and putting it out there... Keep it burnin'!
As someone else commented, this was a gift to us all Mick, thank you! One of my favorite episodes, and you've created a great song. Looking forward to episodes like this, on actually USING all the cool gear.
We're all proud of you! Thanks for creating and thanks for sharing 👍 great song
A very relatable episode. Cheers and thanks for documenting the process! It’s good to hear your music and voice.
Thank you! I subscribe to and enjoy TPS but I really got so much more from this. You showed great courage in allowing us to see the process. Great song and performance!
Wow Mick. Thank you.
That was great video. It really inspired me. Especially to not be afraid of just trying a slide.
Brilliant. Loved every second. Many thanks Mick.
Thank goodness! I was freaking out thinking TPS was done. Thanks Mick for continuing to talk about mental health and stepping out of your comfort zone. Really inspiring to see someone talk the talk then back it up with the walk. Thanks for everything you guys do!
Thank you kindly!
Lovely episode, and the song is good too. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this. I am inspired, indeed! Beautiful song that nearly got the tears welling up. Your willingness to be exposed is greatly appreciated, and at the forefront of what makes the TPS community great.
Thank you kindly!
Love this Mick! You didn’t just show us writing a song. You’ve coached us through HOW to do certain things! Particularly appreciate the harmonising part 👏👍😊💃🕺
