    Okay, well, I just checked and found that yes, I did break one of the 3 wires off from the crankshaft position sensor connector, which is why the truck won't fire. So I either need to splice in a new connector with a length of all three wires or get a connector tool and try to fix it. Edit: Didn't plan on fixing it tonight, but the local auto parts store had the part, so I went and got it, spliced in the new connector/pigtail and the truck runs!

    When doing this to my 2001 Suburban 5.3l,
    I had to take the 15mm bolt out of the dipstick tube bracket (from the top side) and pull the dipstick and tube up and out of the way so the starter could then be pushed back. My starter had no room to slide back until I did this. Hope this helps.

    You can get to it by going through the RF wheel well; just remove the wheel and wheel-well lining. Also, I'd disconnect the battery before messing with the starter.

    There are a lot of cheaper scanners that can perform the crank position relearn. I really like the Xtool D7 because the cost to capability is excellent.

    Tip... don't use oil or grease on rubber seals. Solution, use silicone paste with teflon, it won't swell the seals or make them soft like oil and grease.

    This is pretty much how it goes. But I'm sure 99% of us don't have a car lift in our driveway or garage. So you'll be doing this on your back in the ninety-degree heat trying to finagle that sensor out without smashing into pieces mine was stuck in there pretty good.

    When these go bad, can they cause the dash tach to drop off on the freeway or under moderate load (acceleration). I'm fiddling with a P0342 code, and my tach will drop off when on the freeway or right after moderate acceleration up hill.. I have a 02 LS1 in an F-body. No sure if I should go after the Cam position sensor first or do the crank position sensor (it looks so much easier than the Cam Sensor)

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  8 місяців тому

      What usually happens when these go bad, is a crank no start or an intermittent stalling problem. I would swap out the Cam sensor and see if that fixes your problem. Thanks for watching!

    Is the wire going to the crankshaft position sensor connected to the starter wire harness? Does the wire underneath the starter on the left side go up to it? I wonder if I pulled too hard and disconnected it or pulled a wire out. The truck won't fire now, but did before the starter replacement. It's the only logical explanation for it magically not firing after the starter job.

    I'veI done many crankshaft sensors and have never seen it stated in the instructions to lube the sensor with wheel bearing grease or oil of any type. Usually there are no instructions that come with the part. Just replaced one on a couple of days ago where a so called ASE mechanic didn't even check for clearance and just push the sensor in place smashing it up against the innards, causing a huge gouge and scratching the sensor up badly. The one was a mechanic in name only.

      Reply might not have worked due to the link, I added, but here’s a “relearn without a scanner” procedure option. See any issues with using something like this?
      “How do you relearn a crankshaft sensor without a scanner?
      - Turn off all of the accessories.
      Accelerate the vehicle to 55 mph at part throttle.
      - Cruise at 55 mph for another 5-6 minutes.
      - Decelerate to 45 mph without using the brakes, and maintain 45 mph for 1 minute.
      - Perform 4 deceleration cycles, without using the brakes, of 25 seconds each where no specific speed is necessary.”

    • @shrouts777
      @shrouts777 2 роки тому

      The second version reads like this, but it looks to be basically the same “relearn without a scanner” option:
      “NOTE: If the Crankshaft Variation Relearn is not accessible through your scanner (some truck applications 1998 & later), perform the relearn in the following manner:
      1. Turn off all of the accessories. With the Air temperature sensor and Coolant temperature within 5 degrees (Centigrade) of each other, start the engine and let it idle in Park or Neutral for two minutes.
      2. Accelerate the vehicle to 55 mph at part throttle. Cruise at 55 mph for 8- 10 minutes until the engine reaches operating temperature.
      3. Cruise at 55 mph for another 5-6 minutes.
      4. Decelerate to 45 mph without using the brakes, and maintain 45 mph for 1 minute.
      5. Perform 4 deceleration cycles, without using the brakes, of 25 seconds each where no specific speed is necessary. Returning to 45 mph for 15 seconds in between deceleration cycles.
      6. Accelerate to 55 mph and cruise for 2 minutes.
      7. Stop the vehicle and idle for 2 minutes with the brake applied and the transmission in Drive (automatic trans.) or Neutral (manual trans.) with the clutch depressed.”

    Just wanted to make sure every crank sensor has that O-ring or some kind of gasket since my Suzuki's missing it and leaks oil crazy

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  3 роки тому

      Yeah it has to have some sort of seal or it will leak like a sieve. Thanks for watching!

    is it just me, or does that bell housing look cracked... or is that just quality GM casting?

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  3 роки тому

      Could just be a casting seem. Or its a crack, the truck is fairly old. Thanks for watching!

    Will this cause you to fail emissions?

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  3 роки тому

      Yeah if it is throwing a code and therefor a check engine light. It will fail smog. Thanks for watching!

  • @1FishinAddict

    Why would you want to change it? What’s the code?

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  2 роки тому

      We changed this because the truck wouldn't start and was throwing a P0335 code. Thanks for watching!

    It will not affect anything if you put the crank position sensor and Driver to local shop

    How do you know it was bad

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  2 роки тому

      It throws a code saying it's bad, also it had intermittent stalling. Thanks for watching!

    Will this sensor cause a misfire and hesitation under load? Truck runs good at idle but if I hit the gas fast it backfires through the tbi and trying to drive it does also.

    How much is it to have a mechanic replace and do a relearn?

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  3 роки тому

      Replacement and relearn? Something like $140 or so. Thanks for watching!

    • @ideled
      @ideled 2 роки тому

      The cheapest quote I got for the replacement and relearn is $275 and the most expensive quote was $395.
