    A few tips:
I think Arin's orange creatures in the cargo hold kept dying because he had the mutation set to max. So they were super unstable and all died.
Next, turn down the speed when you're working, as there's a time limit to how long they'll let you make creatures before each battle. You're losing a lot of your precious time just hovering over menu buttons with the speed on max. Take your time to freeze the creatures (and timer), click on individual creatures to check their stats, and build walls/inject new creatures as needed. THEN turn up the speed when you need them to proliferate.
Increase the space you have, so your creatures have more room to procreate. As you saw, towards the end room really ran out. So creatures will starve and die.
Try to focus on making stronger creatures in each Stat. So try and inject creatures with high points in half of the stats, and have them breed with creatures that have strength in the other half. Offspring usually don't see an increase in a Stat, so you get high stats by breeding creatures with high x with high y, now you have something high in x and y. Keep breeding the best offspring until you have creatures high in all your desired stats. Although, as you saw, go too low in things like eat and they'll die before they can mate.
Consider making separate populations good at different things. Fighters on the front line with high rage, strength, and stamina. Breeders and eaters on the back lines that will proliferate your army once your front line dies. Get creative with the Stat combinations to see what is more successful.
When you get creatures with good stats, section off the good ones to let them keep breeding more with similar stats. If they freely mix with the whole population, your stats will most likely level out again and you will lose those high numbers. While they go at it in a separate area, you can keep experimenting with the rest of the creatures to make more combinations.
Remember, high mutation levels let you have a chance at random high stats, but equally may result in random low stats. It's a gamble every time.
Be sure to make good use of the noise and decoys on your enemy in battle. And I'm sure it's obvious that you need to optimize location of creature and food deployment so that you aren't overwhelmed or left starving.
I'm personally a fan of what Arin did, start by using the laser to command your creatures to eat and mate, build up numbers, and then you can focus on attacking. I haven't ever tried the strategy of dropping rage food in the middle of enemy territory, but honestly that might work!!!
I hope some of that helps!

Those early 90's radio accents were like that specifically because the equipment couldn't pick up the voice well if they didn't speak with a higher cadence. I'm willing to bet this game was made using the same solution.

Interesting... (I assume you mean a higher pitch).
A similar audio related thing from old games: In the Star Wars movies, the Rebels communicate over a radio with a very distinct sound. It turns out that Lucas Arts achieved the effect by putting two old (at the time) military/trucker/boat/etc radios in different rooms, playing the raw audio into one, and recording the output of the other. I think that is just how those old vacuum tube radios sounded, but maybe it was a specific type/brand/etc.
So, years pass. Lucas Arts starts work on the Rogue Squadron game on the N64. They want to use the system's new wav audio playback feature to play autio of your squadron talking with you. They wanted to be able to tell you your mission through spoken dialog instead of a dialog box, so they knew they could not just recycle sounds from the movies. They tried to find an audio filter to reproduce the sound, but nothing available at the time was even remotely close enough to the authentic sound that everyone wanted.
So they had to get the radios from a museum or something, and did the exact same setup Lucas Film did in the 70s, but with digital equipment on either side of the radio.

The weirdest game like this I've ever played was like a 14th century, ship trading game. Where you had to choose what country you were aligned with, you get a boat and some goods and you have to trade with other countries. But it's all historically accurate, and you got to make trade routes based on prevailing winds and ocean currents. I played it because you could build cannons onto your ship and build an armada to fight pirates, but I think that's only like 40 hours into the game. It was waaaaay too involved.
