    HI! I have a 1997 4runner that I am looking to swap an engine into at some point. Probably just another rebuilt 5vz with less miles. I really appreciate the video and will probably be watching it several more times before my other half and I begin work. I would love to see more videos from you! I live in Hawaii have my 1995 3.0 Manuel 5spd that kept blowing HGs. No way I will let anyone touch my truck here!!! Last place SCREWED the job and robbed me in countless ways. 1,000$ to mill the heads alone and HG blew again in 3k mi. 1,300$ in back registration rt now. She ben sitting for 4yrs being rope towed from place to place because state keeps trying to steal her which they already did in 2017 cost me 500$!!! I wanted to do a 3.4 swap but realize the 3.0 is way easier and ( affordable). Not sure what to put in. A crate engine, a rebuilt, or a junk yard dog.... I have tools just mainly need a hoist and

    Quick question on the 4 wheel drive that fits the 92 Toyota pickup 4x4 with 3vze, it's a 30/40 LE. My wiring harness was totally messed when I pulled engine and transmission. The very rear wire was a single, coming out the driver side. The next only had one. The third set had three going to the wiring harness. Is this correct? Because I bought a used transmission with low miles and the far back and middle has two each. Can I get away with hooking only one wire at each port or would I need to change sensors that only have the one wire connection? Any help extremely appreciated, thanks.!

    • @NightWrencher

      I went through a similar problem because these truck changed the wiring a lot. My advice is use the harness that matches your oem harness and install the matching parts that fit the harness. Dont go mixing and matching cuz it wont work

    Nice vid. I'm fixing to pull my 3.0 out but I would like to leave my manual trans in the truck. Is the only thing that I need to worry about is getting to the top few bolts that bolt on the transmission? U said you preferred pulling them both but is the reason why is because your talking about an automatic trans?

    • @NightWrencher
      @NightWrencher  3 роки тому +1

      Its just cuz its faster for me that way I dont have to pull the 2 bellhousing supports off the engine and trans and also dont have to pull the bellhousing bolts or torque converter bolts. If you wanna leave the trans in the truck, losen the engine mounts, unbolt the trans mount from the frame and lower the trans slowly, it should lower down enough for you to reach the top bolts with a long extension. Because with the colant sensors at the back of the engine because you can break them if you go too far. I like to remove them completely just in case along with the upper intake manifold

    • @NightWrencher

      The best way I've been able to do it, has been to remove both heads together without removing the crossover. Its a little heavy but it saves you a ton of work. Unbolt the 3 bolts that hold the exhaust down pipe to the manifold and you're good to go. Having a buddy helps. Best of luck!

    Thank you Nightwrencher. You make this look so easy...
    I will be performing this feat for my first engine removal and rebuild. Are there any difficulties a new rook like myself needs to be aware when reinstalling the rebuilt engine?Were there any pit falls to avoid like assembly order or anything that might make it less difficult?
    This will take me a while to do probably a couple months to complete the rebuild. I am worried I will miss an reassembly order. Do you have any thoughts on how you organize the parts? I am going to use a cardboard layout for bolts so I can draw items with bolt patterns so I can remember in 2 months. :D
    The heads are slightly warped but the engine is still running. It sounds like you recommend pulling engine and transmition at same time.
    Is there a rebuild list you perform when doing this. And if possible what other items would you replace with the engine out. Maybe power steering and or upgrade sway bars bushing and engine mounts?
    You mentioned seals?
    Thank you for your time. I appreciate it for sure.

    • @NightWrencher
      @NightWrencher  5 років тому

      Thank you for your kind words! Removal is pretty straight forward. The PS pump can stay hooked up, just unbolt it from the engine. Theres no easy way to take off the AC compressor, so just remove the two lines the 1 wire plug and leave the compressor bolted on. I find it easier to remove together because I dont like to remove the 2 engine block supports and dust cover to get to the 4 14mm TC bolts. Also the starter requires a 2 foot long extension plus a wobble 14mm. As for organizaton, I honestly just put the hardparts together in a corner and all the bolts in a bucket. Ive pretty much memorized where each bolt goes and if you go slow while disassembly you can see exactly what kind of bolts need to go where and why. I hope this helps you!

      One last note to finish your questions. Front main, rear main, oil pan silicone(sandwhiched windage tray, silicone both sides), cam seals, valve cover gaskets, water pump, timing belt with pulleys, knock sensor + wiring, spark plugs, wires and for the trans, front pump seal, tail shaft seal, trans pan gasket and filter.

      Thank you very much. You are an inspiration to me. I am going to start in the next couple weeks.
      another question since you have done this a few times. When selecting a rebuild kit do you opt for just OEM replacement complete kit, i think they run around $260 USD?

    • @NightWrencher
      @NightWrencher  5 років тому

      @@robg6202 most of the parts that you will need will come in that kit including most of the seals that I mentioned. there are a couple things that may be missing such as the coolant bypass that sits in the Valley of the block which you can get either a Toyota or fabricate yourself. As long as you're not getting inside the internal such as rings and bearings everything else should be straightforward. Good luck!

    I need to remove my engine but keep the auto transmission in any tips on what exact plugs to remove

    • @NightWrencher
      @NightWrencher  6 років тому

      TechReveiwerNZ if you put a jack under the tranny and undo the 4 cross member bolts(18mm) you can lower the jack slowley until it gives you enough room to remove the o2 sensor, reverse switch, PNS switch and 4x4 switch plugs. There may be 1 more plug or so. Afterward use a long extension to take the top of the tranny bolts off. Then lift the trans back up and put the 4 bolts back on. You should be careful not to lower the trans too much because you can damage some hoses or coolant sensors at the back of the block. Also make sure the engine mounts are still bolted to the body to prevent the engine from falling into you. Hope this helps.

    • @boostedgaragenz2553

      NightWrencher is this easier way to remove wiring harness but still have it plugged into the ecu?

    • @NightWrencher
      @NightWrencher  6 років тому

      TechReveiwerNZ unfortunately there is no easier way to seperate the harness from the engine and trans. If the trans is going to be left in, you can get by, by removing the harness off the engine itself and leave the rest in the bay

    • @boostedgaragenz2553
      @boostedgaragenz2553 6 років тому

      NightWrencher so unplug it from the ecu and feed it through the hole ?

    • @NightWrencher
      @NightWrencher  6 років тому

      TechReveiwerNZ you can remove the upper manifold and disconnect all the plugs. And flip the harness over the passenger fender. You can leave the trans part of the harness alone along with the firewall. Just make sure to take off the starter and alternator and remove the harness all the way to the maf.

    • @NightWrencher

      The problem is if you dont unhook the whole harness, you have to pull it out from the cab. So you got 2 options, leave all the sensors and harness in place and remove the upper intake to disconnect the fuel injectors and fuel rail. Or option 2 is pull off all sensor connections, pull harness from inside of cab where the ecu is, and pull it out complete which is what I did cuz i sold my old engine complete

      Even I struggled with it the first couple of times I had to remove and install that engine. The best thing I can say is if you're taking apart a four-wheel drive and the rear nuts are stuck, you're probably going to have to take a grinder or a Dremel and cut the nuts off so you can remove the drive shaft or, separate the engine from the transmission, which is a big pain, disconnect the harness that goes to the transmission, and pull the engine out separately. Then drop the transmission onto the floor disconnect the drive shaft at the differentials and pull the whole thing out together and try to work the nuts loose outside
