"You don't remember this game" Hahahahaha, Ran the whole game with Guilt, could never get the last piece to ultimate behind that gate. The triple final boss segment I really liked.
I don't care what anybody says I love this game. This game is what got me into playing Devil May Cry in the first place
I love the game too. Honestly, I played DMC first and when I saw this, i decided to give it a shot when places said it was similar
Literally the same with me.
There's a bunch of us, isn't there?
I still own this game and loved the hell out of it growing up, still do and I wish it got a remake
Me too! Great game
My friend bought this game out of spite. I loved Devil May Cry so much, and I played it to the point that i was doing no damage runs in the hardest modes. Anyways, my friend couldn't keep up with my skill level, so he started bad mouthing Devil May Cry, and then he eventually bought this claiming it was 10x better lol
Jokes on you, I DO remember it! You start with the best monster, it gets wrecked, then you can rebuild it better!!
Indeed!
It's so satisfying getting him back and upgrading it past the form he was in at the start of the game. Thanatos max absolutely wrecks any and every enemy.
It's a gem of a game. I think this guys high or stupid, he just laughs at everything.
Even from the syart of cutscense I'm getting final fantasy vibes
Yes rebuild Thanatos.
All I know about this game was that when Astral Chain was released, thre were a few people comparing them. Need to play this one of these days.
So Matt's right you don't remember LOL
Same devs
Similar mechanics
Still hoping for a remake!
I own this on my PS2. I bought it around the same time as I bought The Bouncer.
The bouncer...theres a remake I'd love
the BOUNCER
The bouncer was one hell of a beat em up game.
Same. If this game got a remake or update (for everything), I would probably buy it again.
The Bouncer's logo swagged up so drunk it'd probably be ejected by a nightclub irl.
Chaos Legion is a good underrated game and I like the soundtrack
Fully agree
You barely scratched the surface of this game, theres a lot more to how you summon and command your legions. You gotta switch modes man
He finally got around to actually Jojo-ing his legion towards the end haha!
He should have played this on an original ps2, he's clearly lacking the camera controls. and other major button commands.
It's his Resistance: Fall of Man video all over again
The game is based on a novel of the same name, by Tow Ubukata.
Novel?
No manga?
I fell I saw manga pages...
@@Ramsey276one Novels/light novels have illsutrations for some scenes. they can either be important scenes or even comedy ones. last i checked therear are at least almost ten illustrations a volume.
@@jeffdeleon3403 not manga panels, are they?
Maybe they did a promotional thing or someone made a G-rated doujin...
@@Ramsey276one some illustrations do usr manga panel layouts but thats mostly to show other characters..because usually the illustrations are single page. Havent seen a two page illustration.
@@jeffdeleon3403 I think I saw one page, so that might have been it...
Joke's on you Mr. McMuscles. I DO remember this game as well as NanoBreaker by Konami for some reason.
I keep confusing the two games.
I do remember this game. I have it. I bought it. I am staring at it. I literally started making characters and writing and drawing because of this game. It was my actual soul for the longest time. The running joke between me and my friend is that if she can get Pikmin 4, maybe I can get a Chaos Legion remake.
I just remembered I have a Chaos Legion AMV posted from 11 years ago.
@@idontknowyoumitch ey thats awesome :3 its kinda like that for me with Shin Megami Tensei and Devil May Cry, started writing music cus of them >,
Ill make a petition with you and we can make this happen bro.
Well she's getting Pikmin 4. Maybe now's finally for the long awaited Chaos Legion remake!
I really like your story of being inspired by this great game.
I use to play the crap out of Chaos Legion on PlayStation 2 back in the day sad the game didn't become popular and always be deemed as a Devil May Cry knockoff.
yet something like God of war deemed to be one of the best games on PS2.. which it is.. but it borrows a lot from Devil may cry
I recently learned how to play the ending credits song "Liv-Fly" on my guitar. Damn, it's brings back memories.
Combat-wise it doesn't even resemble DmC at all. They really misunderstood the game for what it is back in the day, or even now still
Bujingai I think was more of a DMC knockoff. Maybe Matt should play that game at one point.
Me too! At the time I didn't understand why people said it sucked so much, now a days I kinda get it but hey, I still wanna see it on PSN. It's not like worse games haven't been put on it :P
NO, Mat. You have no idea. I actually plaid Chaos Legion back when I was in high school! I still own my copy of it too, so this is a blast from the past for me :3
This is one of those hidden gems. Loved this game back in the day. Delecroix nothing but a wanna - be sephiroth. You'll get a little turtle monster later on that let's you throw it like a bomb. It's low-key the best Chaos Legion when you max it out. At least I remember it being broken as fuck.
Literally the best legion
I recall blasphemy being said bomb creature...And you kicked it as its special attack. Like soccer kick to enemy faces and 'secret' places in the levels
Same man just the initial start you get thanatos and then that gets taken away haha love the game love the music so sad it didn't do well well such a shame we haven't gotten a HD remaster lol its a yearly wine that me and my friend have haha
Agreed. The bombs were awesome!
@@TatsuEntertainment yeah, that's the one! It's basically the games easy mode! Lol
This game deserves so much better. The story and atmosphere give me heavy drakegard/nier vibes.
Might have to emulate it for my channel
Am I wrong to have enjoyed this more than DMC? I loved leveling up different crests in each playthrough and trying out their powers. the wrestling counter attack was my fav, it even shattered the weapons or armor pieces on certain bosses
I had this game as a kid, it made me ask my parents for DMC3 since the back of the box mentioned it.
Then I couldn't beat DMC3's tutorial and stopped playing both of them.
I completely forgot about this game until Astral Chain came out
Sheeeeit DMC3 was the best one imo. I was thoroughly confused by the first one's gameflow, the second was... what the f××k and also I died after making hella progress when the save point was like 45 mins behind so I said "f××k this*
The third really streamlines a lot of elements that were poorly implemented and found its wings, so to speak. And also Virgil plays nice.
@@viscountrainbows6452 DMC3 is great, I used to think zi couldn't beat the tutorial cause I sucked at videogames as a kid(which I did) until I found out the american release I had renamed hard to normal. That was such a weird trend.
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn do the same thing, except PoR renamed easy to normal. Imagine the difficulty spike going from the easiest game's easy mode to one of the harder game's hard mode. It's hell.
@@uriel7395 Gotdang that is a localization fail tae fuck. That's either a prank from a disgruntled dev or an obscene oversight.
@@viscountrainbows6452 That was actually a trend of making the Western versions of Japanese games harder, because in the West customers had access to video games rentals, contrary to Japanese ones. From the 8 bit era all the way up to the sixth generation, loads of games were made artificially harder, for example by removing difficulty options or intentionally removing vital information. Castlevania on Famicom had both an Easy and Normal difficulty, whereas on NES Normal was the default.
You couldn’t beat the tutorial? I beat Dante must die mode when I was 11
Chaos Legion was my jam!…
…never beat it.
Same. Harder difficulty was equal to getting punched in the face by a pissed off elephant.
@@LunaP1 I would imagine that getting punched in the face by a non pissed off elephant wouldn’t be any more pleasant. 🤣
I remember it and still have it on my ps2 remember grinding for the Thanatos legion an unlocking Arcia love the sound track and the cheesiness of the plot and belive it or not this is based on an novel of the same name
I remember this game fondly it was my first game that i got with my PS2 along with xenosaga i spent several hours on it
4:34 "All I did was enter my name! ThrillMatt!"
WELCOME, THRILLMA
[Bart Berenstain:Buy me Bloodstorm or go to Hell, Norway!]
[Marge Berestain:Bart!]
[Homer Berenstain:Young man in this treehouse we use a little word called PLEASE.]
I loved this game. It's where my usual character name Sieg came from.
Capcom in the ps2 era put out a lot of games that I fondly remember.
I owned this. Played the heck out of it. The monster summons could be upgraded towards the end.
I wish this game had a remastered...
Same
I have a feeling Chaos Legion walked so Astral chain could run.
This game was a based on a novel, for those who don't know.
And Matt, many people remember this game, it is kinda liked for many, myself included.
@Games first a novel.
I spent hours on this game as a kid. It was difficult.
Oh i remember it for sure, remembering as I’m looking at my copy at this moment, time for a replay , thanks Matt 🤘🏽
One of my favourite playstation 2 games of all time. Still have fly on my mp3 player. Loved the pawns based on sins. Remake please!
I remember this game very well because I played because the INCREDIBLE OST.
Onimusha lesser known cousin returns 😊
It's closer to Devil Kings.
A little bit of advice when playing this game for the first time: play on easy mode first. this game is actually pretty hard in normal mode when you reach later level. certain enemies can straight up two shot you when you're not careful
Those metallic warriors...
Oooooh
"Goth! I will goth you the Gothic gothing!"
"Do you dare to goth to me? I will goth until you are gothed to the dark goth realm!"
"You dare to dark goth? You do not understand the dark depths of the Goth GOTHIC GOTHING!!!"
I actually finished this on my pc. It came out same time I believe. I loved it. But yes stages were repetitive looking and such. But the strategy type of battle was soooo great.
I also only play the PC version, didn't finish it but it's the first time I just browse the game's folder and watch every FMVs lmao
@@arditeider2812 lol, actually did that too
Oh, you just made me remember me of playing this game! Was like, my first Hack 'n Slash, never was much into them.
I remember you can totally cheese the Shooty boys by just spamming their summon button non-stop, so they pretty much gattling gun everything at pretty much no cost!
I too made the mistake of at first thinking of it as a DMC game. played through this in full some months ago on the PC and while I did actually have fun, there's a bunch of weird decisions made regarding the gameplay that did struck as bad at first, but start making sense once you get deep into it, even if there were better solutions in hindsight. The game does tell you about things but not in a way that's actually descriptive besides anything with images accompanying the explanation. For example, the "lock-on attack" is in reality a tag so you can send your Legions to priority targets (while it also gives you a soft lock-on to your camera), and if you upgrade Malice's enchant you can unlock a "tag parry" called Spartan which knocks down enemies if you tag them as soon as they're about to launch an attack, or that you can actually parry in the game (which is told to you on the first level but is not clear that you have to attack in the same few frames an enemy launches an attack) and you even get a crowd parry attack called Avenger from the Arrogance Legion (which btw is awesome)
For its simplicity, the game does have some neat mechanics underneath, and even a small speedrun appeal by using the right Legions in combat to dispatch targets, is just that one goes in expecting something like DMC or even God of War when that's really not the case, and its very slow to get going at first due to unlocking Legions, gaining experience, and a good bunch of Sieg's moves being restricted to specific Legion crests until you unlock them globally (for example, the double jump is locked to Avarice and a few sword finishers are locked behind other Legions). Sure, that doesn't change the core game being repetitive with little variation at the end of the day (and even unlocking the gunslinger Arcia doesn't help things much since she doesn't use Legions to begin with), but they did have something going on here, I feel. Had there been a better planning considering this came out barely 2 years after DMC, or a more experienced team behind the wheel all things considered, perhaps the game would've been received better in its prime
But hey at least we got Astral Chain out of this so is not all bad
Also Blasphemy assist too op
its rough at 1st, with the lack of moves and especially if u dont understand that different legions do different damage to specific enemy types. it becomes more playable when you unlock more moves and actually become a character
Ahh.. the Original Astral Chain in a way. 👍
Well considering that the people who made this formed clover studios and went on to make Platinum games, it's more than "in a way".
@@thereluctanthipster6075 I most definitely agree.
I loved this game. I spent so much time replaying the levels and getting everything powered up. Such a cool game
It was also a great PS2 game in a technical perspective too. All that shit on screen with no framedrops.
Finally getting Perfect Thanatos was very satisfying
two ps2 games i would recommend, Demon Chaos and The Sword of Etheria
sword of etheria is heavely carried by the music tho. Still a decent game.
@@eminiclam I thought it was more carried by its very cool juggle system lol
@@eminiclam it was a decent game, its a shame we didnt see more about the crazy castlevania ripoff Leon.
Completely forgot about this game!!! I actually had fun collecting all the monster abilities, but i never beat this game.
I mean I know of this game's title and first level's theme thanks to that one flash Sonic RPG.
Owned this game and loved it. The soundtrack is pretty killer. I only ever used the legion that you kick and it explodes enemies. Destroys everything.
@Games Yeah, that one! I never summoned it proper, only used the assist.
I played the demo as a kid, and I remember how I thought that "Victory Truth" is kind of a dumb name for a protagonist xD
LOL!!! I Thought that the game was called "CHAD's LEGION"
I loved this game game back in the day!
Say what you will of it, but at least it had one hell of a soundtrack.
Don't tell me I don't remember Chaos Legion! It is one of 3 games that I regret buying in my lifetime. The hype of the "from the makers of Devil may cry" tag on the box got me.
I remember playing it when i was young and had a relatively good time, but looking at it now, it's definitely a musou game and hasnt aged that well haha great work Sir McMuscles!
Lol I remember playing it on the PC. :)
me too, i didn't knew what the hell was going on but loved to tear trough the enemies.
@@kiro5010 lol I remember getting this cause I could not afford a PS2 😂🤣
I played this having barely heard of Devil May Cry, and had a cracking time.
I was just watching a walkthrough of this yesterday wanting to go find the game at my parents house to play again haha such 2000s edge
i was introduced to this game circa 2012 when the game sonic rpg eps8 came out and the battle theme was welcome to the darkness from this game, recently bought a copy too
OMG CHAOS LEGION YAAAASSSS rented the crap out of this when I was a little girl the memories haha
@Emilia Coppola nope lol i don't really remember much from it haha although I somehow remembered the villain and hero's names 😆
Hatered Legion is still my favorite one just because of the counter attacks.
@@TexasHollowEarth Yup, the very same. The wrestling counters and their basic attacks is to literally curb stomp every one around them.
This was one of the first PC 3d games i saw installed on my dads computer, with Sonic heroes, cod 1, Half life 1, and mohaa
Remake when!? Sequel when!?
I remember it; my local game store (Not GameStop) had it on sale when the PS3 was first being sold; they abbreviated it as "Chs Leg" on the advertisement. I went inside, and asked the clerk, "What's Cheese Leg?"
This was 100% a game I rented at Blockbuster multiple times as a kid. I remember my cousin came over and we played it for hours and he liked it so much he ended up buying it.
Thank you for reminding me of this so I can forget about it again.
This was honestly one of my favorite PS2 games! I loved using the legions in combat, and the only other game that felt similar to me was Astral Chain on the Switch.
If you ever give this another shot, definitely look up the controls. As you level up, you gain several ways to use each legion offensively and defensively. You also unlock extra attacks and abilities to do combos with. I will admit the beginning is a little rough, but it really does get better.
I remember finishing it. Not a bad game, honestly.
I bought this game because the box said, “If you like Devil May Cry you’ll love this game.” I specifically remember thinking it’s like a tech demo of “what if we added pets/summons to DMC” and made me appreciate when a game has less copy+paste assets.
I leveled up my archer bots only and it was a mistake because I got to a point where they dealt like 0.001 damage to a target that hard countered them. That’s when I quit the game.
This remains one of my favourite games. I played it so many times on PS2.
Gotta love it when Japan uses German "names" for characters. Sieg Wahrheit translates to "Victory Truth". What a name.
The reason why the dialog is not even make sense is because the base story actually came from their Chaos Legion novel which only sold in Japanese. This game is the sequel of the novel tho, I must say this is the final act since Sieg is no longer in the same vision with Victor unlike their old days, beside Sheila's death become a great impact for victor and making him unstable (look at the final boss, he even try to resurrect sheila with the legion power).
It’s official, Matt is a Video game Hipster 😂
I remember a thing that you summoned, that you kicked and it exploded
Tbh game doesn't seem to go to waste. The whole gothic theme went to DMC4. Maybe even some assets were updated. Amount of enemies on screen may be reused for dead rising 1.
The Great Depression: defeat your enemies destroying their economies.
This was my favourite game when I was a kid.. I would literally beat it over and over again.
I had the demo for this and I LOVED it. Never got the full thing but I burned rings on that demo disc
I’m so glad you’re talking about this game, I was obsessed with it as a kid and I remember buying it because of a hotter than lukewarm X-Play review. I was literally searching for vids about it yesterday, felt crazy cause so few people were talking about it.
One of my all time favourite games. Finished it multiple times. Love the song fly by liv at the end too
I remenber my japanese friend playing this with a turbo controller and breaking the whole game. But that's pretty much it.
I had this game and has always loved it. It was so awesome. Need to play through it again
I totally forgot that the protagonist is called "Sieg Wahrheit" literally "Victory Truth". What a name.
I have this game still! Always wanted to read the light novels it was based on but never got around to it.
Me and my friend, Tyler personal favorite game for the PS2. You should see his cosplay of Sieg Wahrheit.
i remember chaos legion. i remember i cheesed the final boss by just walking around the outside of the arena MASHING the support button to fire the archer minions. it took forever. i still have the soundtrack and drama cd
Well, I DIDN'T remember this game at all until this video. I remember renting this game and thinking it was dope as heck.
This is actually one of my very first PS2 games. I always liked the game, and probably it's better that I didn't get to play DMC series before Chaos Legion :)
I've always felt that I'm the only person on the planet who loves this game. I love it.
Oh, I certainly remember Chaos Legion. I remember being really bad at Chaos Legion, but being really into the concept and kind of wishing there could have been more.
This is my fav PS2 game of all time. Remember it vividly. Had to get all the piece to get the badass legion u started with and evolve him, and had to listen to that ending song repeatly as a kid.
I still have the game AND the Strategy Guide. You can pretend no one remembers this game but my existence is proof that a single person does! A person who doesn't matter!
I still have my copy in my room right now. I loved this game
This game hits me in the nostalgia pretty hard. Me and my brother put a ton of hours into this game.
If I remember correctly my old man picked this up waaaay back on a whim, lost interest, and I fell deeply in love with it.
Oh look, it's the Astral Chain prototype.
Seriously, this is the basis for that game.
Not once, but twice I let coworkers at my last job borrow my copy of this game. Both times they disappeared with it. Always thought that was odd, since all the other games returned to me after I would lend them out.
Dude I ALWAYS remember this game! Chaos Legion was my JAM! Sieg Warheit is my dream character for smash bros.
I think I still own this game...been a hot minute since I played it.
honestly, this and war of the monsters, are the two playstation 2 games, that deserves a remake/sequel more than anything.
Shame this hasn't ended up on GOG. Remember really enjoying Chaos Legion back in the day.
My favorite Legion (very far ahead) are the "football player king in space" legion. Forgot what it's called but it's basically a parry/counter legion with enemy specific interaction kinda like Nero's buster from dmc4. Costs a lot iirc but pretty satisfying
When I first saw Astral Chain, I immediately had a throwback to this game
Same
That’s why I got it!
5:44 - 5:51 Hack/Slash comic is pretty dope.
childhood PS2 game my brother and I had fun with when we were young.
I do in fact remember playing this! It holds the dubious honor of being the first game I played that bored me enough to put ot down and never pick it up again too.
Man this brings so many memories one of the 1st games I played on my ps2
My favorite crest was the one that summoned a little bomb dude that you'd kick like a soccerball. Big ideas in this game lol
You could kick those? o _ o Never figured it out as a kid. Sword + Archer was my go to.
