      US isn’t the American dream. As a kid i always wanted to live in America, no way would i live there now. Only thing better in the US is ur homes. Cost of living is a joke. Annual Leave u get a max of 10 days off possibly could b wrong. Health insurance is a killer. Less rights in America. Taxes all sorted unless u r Self-employed. Me i get 45 days off paid leave, including bank holidays. Also i get 50 days off paid sick leave. Can visit Hospital without a massive medical bill, when coming out. I hear its costs the American people roughly £2k to call an ambulance. Whereas it’s free here in the UK 🇬🇧 I’d b homeless if i was in an America 😂 with my medication bill. Tbf i’d be covered by health insurance if i was in America because of my job, but not the point

    That's why fast food outlets flourish in the UK, finish work, and go to the pub without worrying about cooking, in the knowledge that there is a world of different food takeaway outlets, perfect. When you leave the pub, get your choice of food ,chill on the sofa watching a late night movie while enjoying your food.

    On tea and coffee, generally in the private sector the company will usually provide tea, coffee, milk and sugar; local government are actually banned from providing anything other than tap water. Most will provide a boiler or boiling water tap, but the tea, coffee etc you provide yourself.

    When I worked in a large UK office, I was targeted by the "tea club" organiser on the day I started. I worked out later, that it was because he wanted to buy a pint of fresh milk every day for his own tea. He had a filing cabinet full of empty glass milk bottles. While most other people would be drinking coffee with coffee creamer.
    Our large departments had a Christmas meal, last day before Christmas lunchtime pub trip, and a Christmas party one night in the office. It was a strict unspoken rule that nobody bought their partner to the office party. What happened at the party, stayed at the party. 🤭

    Uk basic working week if you are 9-5,39 hours a week. Roughly 22payed days holiday plus if you work Monday to Friday.all Bank holidays off. That roughly works out at 30 days,give or take a day or two depending on your initial holiday allowance.
    You can take two weeks off during and straight after you have passed your probation.
    Also you have to factor in weekends,when booking holiday.

    I'm almost 60, and I've never worked anywhere where we regularly go to the pub on a Friday evening. TBH, I would much rather go home than go down the pub with people I've been spending all week with, (and some of whom I don't particularly like). We have been to the pub together on odd occasions, and they all end up talking about work or Big Brother, or "I'm very nearly well known, get me out of here". Besides, if I drink a lot, I pee a lot. And from the nearest pub to where I work, it's about a 20 minute walk, wait for anything up to half ban hour for the bus, then an hours journey until I get home. And no where to pee!

    I work in the private sector in the UK and have NEVER seen the pooling of money for tea or coffee. Our office manager normally gets the supplies either delivered or bought locally on the company credit card.. and this includes bread and it’s companions… we even have a fully working ‘grind-your-beans’ coffee machine with bells and whistles. And I mean it’s most offices I have across England and Wales on the same company that is like this.

    In my experience, going to the pub after work is much more frequent in London than elsewhere in the UK, because of the long commute times and traditionally late evening meal. In other parts of the UK you would tend to go home first, have your meal and then go out with friends. If you work in London then that’s less practical.
    That was always a big culture shock to me as a Londoner moving between London and other regions.

  • @DiscoOx07

    The coffee comes down to the company, I've never worked for a company that didn't have a coffee machine, and never been anywhere without free tea,milk etc.

  • @robcrossgrove7927
    @robcrossgrove7927 Місяць тому +2

    The trouble with having a coffee maker in the office is you get into arguments about who's going to fund it, who's going to buy it, (the coffee, the coffee maker AND the filters), who's going to put the filters and coffee in, and who's going to wash it up afterwards. Also, who's going to take all the mugs and actually pour the coffee in and put the milk in? Believe me, it's more hassle than it's worth.
    You can get coffee bags in the UK now. Ground coffee in bags like Tea bags. It's much more convenient. People can provide their own.

    Yeah im in NZ my taxes are all done for me i can't remember the last time i had to fill out tax returns....

  • @stephenhodgson3506
    @stephenhodgson3506 Місяць тому +2

    As well as PAYE you can also ask to submit your own tax assessment which is really easy. Before I retired I would submit my tax form and every year I would get a tax refund.
    Every where I have ever worked had a coffee maker, that coffee maker was the person who took the last cup of coffee, it was your responsibility to make sure there would be coffee for the next person. Every company I ever worked for paid for tea, coffee and supplies. One company would get their supplies from Costco and they even arranged for every employee to have a Costco card.
    It is worth pointing out that all employees in the UK both full time and part time get the 28 days holiday (vacation). However most companies will only let you take two weeks in one block in any one year. I did one year take the last two weeks of one year then the first two weeks of the next giving me a block of 4 weeks. As a result they changed the company policy so you could only have two consecutive weeks even if they spanned years.
    Combination of office banter and sickness; at one company within a two month period I caught measles and chickenpox, I had both as a child but I got them both again from one of my young sons. On returning from the second illness I was stopped in the corridor by the regional director who with a smile on his face said "we are going to have to let you go, you lied about your age on your application, We aren't allowed to employ children."
    With one exception every company worked in paid for the Christmas do. A few also had what they called company days where they would arrange a day or weekend away for you and your partner that was fully paid for. One even paid for an after opening hours evening at a theme park.

    Statutory holiday leave does often include the UK's 13 bank holidays, as businesses are often shut on those days. But the rest the employee can choose to take. They may need to apply in advance, and the employee can refuse thar particular time period, but can't refuse 5.6 weeks' holiday over a year.
    Sick - you can self certify for 5 working days, after which you need a sick note for a specified time frame. The sick note can be renewed. Long term sickness employees (more than 4 weeks) can only be dismissed after the employee has looked at flexible or staged returns to work, and has talked the situation through with the employee to see if there is a likelihood that they could return to work.

    Now finished working and only made one tax return in all that time! That was only because I inherited my mother's half of their house and, on selling it when my father died, I had to pay Capital Gains Tax on my half as I didn't live in it. The following year, they agreed that I had no reason to make any more tax returns as I was paying PAYE through my employer.

    Everywhere I've worked in the UK, the tea, coffee, milk, sugar, biscuits were paid for as part of admin. Most of the places I worked had a kettle, and at least one microwave and fridges for folks to bring their own food. Several places also had ice machines for those of us that liked iced drink, e.g. coffee. A few companies in London also provided free soft drinks (Pepsi, Fanta, Sprite, etc.)
    In one company, not only did folks bring in their own cakes on their birthdays, but food from their country of origin on the national holiday for that country.

    In the Netherlands the birthday person also does bring the treats(it can be cake, pie, sausage rolls, cookies or what I do is bring a huge bowl of sweets, candybars etc..., because I like the idea of doing the treats like a child would do it for nostalgia and so people can choose what they like and as many as they like) . I've had multiple co-workers do the same after I started doing it, it's like I broke some "candy is for kids barrier". I think before people felt like they had to bring cakes/pies for some reason as if that was the only acceptable option. I think it's great that we have some variation. :)
    Though, at my workplace at least we also get a gift from HR. I think work culture of the UK is similar to the NL.

    Yes, when we're sick, for the first 3 days, we can just phone in for the first day and go off sick, and you still get paid for it. After the third day, you need a doctor's certificate, which generally lasts for a couple of weeks. Then if you're going to be off sick any longer, you need to renew it. Where I work, we get up to 6 months sick leave on full pay, and 6 months sick leave on half pay. If you're still sick after that, the government steps in and helps you out financially, though it's only a fraction of your normal pay. You can't be sacked just for being off sick, but you can be sacked if you've been off sick for a considerable time and there doesn't seem to be any end in sight. Then the manager would have to visit you at home and discuss it with you.

    PAYE is a godsend. The tax authorities give your employer a tax code based on your tax allowances. Your employer works out the tax you have to pay over the tax year. The employer then works out what to pay the taxman and what to pay you per month, so at the end of the year you have paid the correct amount of tax, and your income is constant over the year. The system is self adjusting so if you have a pay rise your new tax is worked out and the tax needing to be deducted is adjusted over the remainder of the tax year.

    Where I come from in the UK a good party will have a " yard of ale" contest. A yard of ale is a long narrow glass with a big bulb at the end. It holds about 2.5 pints, the idea is to drink it as fast as you can without getting soaked in beer in the process., the fastest wins. According to the Guiness book of records 5 seconds is the fastest time.

    Can I just say as a person from England this is only office work she is describing, outside the office environment this isn’t the same , yes if you work for a company they pay your tax you don’t have to do it , also 28 days holiday plus all bank holidays, Christmas Day is a bank holiday Boxing Day is a bank holiday new year day is a bank holidays their is 8 in total , some places especially government offices the longer you work their you get more weeks, but everyone gets 28 days plus 8 bank holidays, Iv never worked in the environment she has been talking to as Iv been mainly in construction and oil and gas industry and self employed Iv worked all over the world , in the uk if I am in the uk for more than 28 days in one year I must pay my taxes in the uk , for me the company I would work for even though I was self employed would pay the taxes in the country I had been working, that was always my deal with the company I would insist on and have it it writing and checked to make sure it was correct, my foreign taxes would also be taken from wage before I got my amount and my amount was what I agree to , for eg if I was making $1000 a day the company would pay the taxes on that amount was mine I didn’t get any fluctuating wages, and yes as a British person working abroad I would be payed in dollars, mainly due to it being oiled and gas , that is changing though, as self employed I don’t get holiday pay or sick pay I could pay myself but it doesn’t feel the same 😂🤣😂

    The idea that as a US citizen who works, lives and pays taxes in another country and you still have to pay taxes in the US is unconscionable.
    I now understand why so many US citizens living long term in the UK opt to apply for UK citizenship and make the UK their permanent home. I also now understand why such people travel to the US on their British passports to visit their US relatives.

      That's the same as a UK citizen. If your working abroad and your a UK Resident you are still required to pay both foreign Tax and British Tax unless you're a resident of the foreign country then you're exempt so pretty much the same as US but the tax system there is slightly different

      UK does tax you if you work abroad as a UK resident you pay UK tax no matter where you work even if that's the other side of the world. You have certain criteria that would make it less or make you exempt but that's definitely a thing for probably most of the world. I think USA is a little more extreme but yea still a thing in UK.

      Just ment that you didn't have the business expenses. To offset against tax. Or have to make financial provision for time off. Not have zero income when sick, or have to pay someone to do the work. You couldn't do when sick. No employer contribution to pension.

    The double taxation kicks in when you earn over 100,000 USD. BUT, even if you owe zero USD, if you DON'T fill in the forms or you fill them in wrong you get charged. Worse if you get sick of that (say you've moved permanently and have no intention of ever living in the US again) and renounce your US citizenship. If you mention the taxation as a reason you'll be blacklisted and have a good chance of being barred from ever entering the US again.

      It's even worse if your an accidental US citizen like my cousin children . Father is english, mother a US citizen they have citizenship via their mother even though they have never been to America but strictly speaking they are US citizens. They can get a US passport

    • @iverson2977
      @iverson2977 Місяць тому

      @geoffpriestley7310 That only applies if you register them in the country. • @geoffpriestley7310

    • @iverson2977

      @@geoffpriestley7310 But how are they US citizens if they ain't born there or registered there. They can become a citizen I get that but to automatically become a citizen is totally bizarre because how does that even work they need some documentation for say social security number ect... which you would have to apply for so technically they are not a citizen until they do that are they 🤷‍♂️ are you sure you know what you're talking about 🤔😂 you have to claim citizenship it's not just as you say it is... I think you're confused

    • @geoffpriestley7310
      @geoffpriestley7310 Місяць тому

      @iverson2977 they only only have to prove that their mother is a US citizen and they can get a US passport. My step daughter can get irish citizenship even though shes never been there her father is an Irish citizen. Her mother was a UK citizen that lived in Ireland, but my step daughter was born in the UK. Don't forget you can be born in the UK and not be a UK citizen or have the right to reside here. Been born in the UK does not automatically give you citizenship like it does in the USA
