    Jami! Hey I wanted to ghive you a heads up. If it's a lane chest made before 1987 - order the safety latch from lanes website. ALL of the chests were recalled and given the option to add a safety hinge so children don't crawlnin and get stuck. So many did that lane STILL offers the free latch ;)

    I recently saw a really old cedar chest and seriously thought about getting it to refinish. Now I'm going to be on the hunt for another one to do. I love this look and I've got to get this stain before it goes off sale tonight. I use the Wooster Foam Brushes to put on my sealer and really love the way the don't streak like regular brushes do. Thanks for another great video !!!

    This is so awesome! I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now and have just finished my first project! My old tv stand. I’ll try to send a photo. I just wanted to let you know that the cedar chest in this video is from my area. I’m in little bitty Rustburg, VA and the chest was made by Lane Furniture Company which was in Altavista,VA like 20 minutes from where I live. So awesome that this piece made it your way and now on UA-cam!!!! Sorry I got really excited!! Thanks for all your knowledge sharing! It really helps soooo much ! You guys are awesome and keep up the good work!!! 💜

    Hi Jami, the piece came out beautiful. The weathered wood that I’ll be white-washing is definitely cedar - they are planed planks to use for an accent wall. The shades of the weathered wood are darker tones of grey that I really want lighter, but not opaque white. My fear is white-washing the cedar and having it then appear pale pink instead of lighter shades of grey. Do you have any tips for achieving the look I’m envisioning? Thank you

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  4 роки тому

      Thanks! With the DIY paint if you’re going for full coverage I’ve not had the color of the wood affect tone. If you’re just wanting to do a light coat with wood showing through you may get a pink effect.

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  6 років тому +1

      It’s very similar. It’s a minimal prep paint. I think it’s more versatile for blending because it’s a thicker consistency. DIY whites also have amazing coverage.

    That is not a cedar chest. That is a pine chest lined with cedar veneer. Cedar is the more expensive wood because of its properties (pest repellent and weather resistant). Go price cedar vs pine in any lumber yard. You are not likely to see pine used for veneer because in comparison to other woods, it has the least desirable properties.
    Lane continues the fine old tradition of the "hope chest". These were storage containers for aspiring brides, a place to collect the linens she would later need for her wedding and marriage. Cedar is a popular choice for lining closets or storage cabinets because it repels the insects that like to chew on clothing.

      Jami Ray Vintage I know, Zeb. The pain is real. My mom painted my grandmothers cedar chest, then my dad stripped it and put on a beautiful stained and varnished finish. Now I want to paint it again, but I feel guilty because dad took such care to make it beautiful. My parents are both passed now, but I still can’t bring myself to paint it. But I really want to!

    what color is your stain?

  • @sandylfgrubb
    @sandylfgrubb 6 років тому +1

    I am such a painting novice, but I love to paint things and I love what paint and / or stain does for a piece. I need something that says....this is the product....this is what you use it for....this is how you use it......for ALL the different types of paint and stain: also something that says if you want "this affect", this is what you use and this is what you do. Do you have anything like that? If not, are you planning to write a book that we can buy? I'd be first in line!

    I have a problem where I stained something dark and there’s still some patches that I must not have sanded down enough so they didn’t take the stain. Could I still do a white wash on it or would it look weird with a super dark stain under it? Please help I need a solution!!!

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  6 років тому

      If you haven’t sealed it yet you can probably whitewash it. Our stain is water based but the technique can work with oil based stain as long as it’s dry. You may want to try a dry brush technique. Let me find the video on it.
