    I made an error on the CPU -- it is the Ryzen 9 5900HX, not the 5900X. I also wrote "PS2" when showing PS3 content. This channel is totally losing it

    Man, once Minisforum gets ahold of the next generation AMD desktop cpus and RDNA 3 mobile GPUs, it's gonna be insane. I might be ready to replace my main PC with one of these at that point.

      I really think mini pc builds are the future. If folks can achieve the same performance with less materials, that might be the wave in a year or 2.

    I'm actually really excited about the mini pc boom lately. It's going to be another year or two when I'm in the market for a new computer but I bet there will be even cooler stuff then. I'm not a power user at all so I'd definitely consider a well made mini pc like this over building one just because of the small size and having it prebuilt

    • @darthwiizius
      @darthwiizius Рік тому +3

      Next year you'll start seeing this type of box come with a Ryzen 6000 CPU and DDR5 which will really shake up these mini PCs. The chips out now already come with up to 8 Zen 3+ cores and 12 RDNA 2 cores so chuck a GPU on top on the board and you'll have a pretty good PC by any standards.

    Let me just say this. I believe I have said this before at some point, but it bares repeating. Russ, I appreciate you mentioning the various prices right out of the gate. It is helpful. I can only speak for myself, it really does not impede my enjoyment from fully watching (for the most part) your channel content. 😁👍

  • @BrianJones-wk8cx
    @BrianJones-wk8cx Рік тому +6

    Excellent perspective, as always, Russ. As you allude to, this device flirts with an “uncanny valley” or sorts in terms of the scale of price to performance ratio. It’s incredibly impressive to see what it can do in this form factor, but as you note, a lesser device at a lower price might seem more impressive.

    Great video. This video was more well-rounded than the rest I've seen but the choice between this and the NUCXI5 is still a tricky one. Both fit the use case well. I suspect I'll wait and see which dips further on black Friday.
    Thank you!

      The NUCX series are much noiser, given the slim laptop form factor. If you don't need it to be quiet and want better gaming performance then you can go with the NUCX.

    • @harleyn3089
      @harleyn3089 Рік тому +1

      Mini ITX is also my preference, but the prices on Mini ITX motherboards have gotten really high the last couple of years. Anything decent tends to be $150 or higher. So that creates an opportunity for boxes like these.
      My current most used PC is a Asrock X300 barebones with a Ryzen 4650G. I'm hoping there's an AM5 version of the X300 along with AM5 APUs, hopefully coming next year at an affordable price.

    Appreciate the review Russ, lots of good points mentioned and a great overview of the performance for this mini PC! Not sure if you were aware, but Minisforum botched the liquid metal application on the predecessor (HX90) model; it would be great if you can check for any similar problems with the liquid metal application on the HX90G. 👏🙂

    This seems like a great deal if you are mainly considering the form factor. Otherwise, you can make a really nice PC with all new parts for about the same price that would totally outperform this.

      having a tiny machine that can run AAA stuff this well and you can just pick it up and hook it up anywhere with a tv or monitor is amazing though, especially if you travel a couple times a year. a tiny powerful thing like this is basically my childhood dream machine next to a handheld powerful pc (the steam deck is getting close to that, too). this would be great for college or holidays especially. i'm definitely keeping an eye on mini pcs in case i can ever afford one this good

    I don't know whether I'm missing something but this might be the perfect device for me. Since I moved out to go to college I'm spending the majority of my time away from my parents. However, it's pretty unpractical to move my PC to my new city. This leads to me not having a PC at 80% of my time.
    With such a little beast however, I could sell my PC and take it with me :D

    • @relsre
      @relsre Рік тому +1

      I'm in a similar situation, moving overseas soon, and doing so with a PC (even a mini-ITX sized one) just doesn't seem practical. Kinda anxious about selling old (and a few new) parts, but travelling lighter does seem like the smarter choice, in the long term.

    This is a question of form factor over functionality. For it's size, it's a beast, for sure. For the asking price, one can get a good full size rig.

    There are mini PCs with GTX 1650s available on Ali Express for $600 or so, and they have been available for maybe two years now. They're 'brandless' and are sold under lots of different names, but they've received generally positive reviews with the only real complaint being the noisy fan. If MinisForum are claiming that their mini PC is the first with a dedicated graphics card to hit the market, they are incorrect.

    Nice review, the first mini PC enough powerfull to play AAA games at 1440p and emulation at 4k. Today for 1000 $ it's difficult to build such a powerfull gamer PC and it will take a lot of place. The big default here it's you can not upgrade CPU or GPU.

    I don't know. I think $8-900 for this mini pc is actually a pretty good value. on one hand, for my use case scenario, the hx90g would fit my use case scenario better plus the extra hp compared to the steam deck is a huge win. yeah, it would've been nice to have a 2.5 slot but external run through usb almost cancels that out. I still haven't flown back to the US to get my steam deck but if for some reason I am disappointed I will flip the SD and get the hx90g.

    Would you recommend this for someone like me?
    -Would replace a laptop from 2015 (couldn't even begin to tell you the specs)
    -Needs something to get in to PC gaming, preferably through Windows using Steam, and at minimum 1080p/high settings
    -Basic gameplay video editing
    -Everyday web browsing, office tasks, ie: "normal" pc use
    Just looking for something this small and easy to play games through my Steam or Epic library at some decent settings. The size is absolutely perfect for me. However, fairly new to PC gaming, all I have at the moment is a Steam Deck, but looking to have that compliment something like this to play games on a more dedicated machine without having to build something on my own or lay down a ton of cash on a prebuilt :-(

    man that stand is goofy. I like minisforum's stuff, but there's always something a little off in every single product they release. It's almost comical how consistent it is. Anyway, very cool to see dedicated graphics in a mini pc. Hopefully we can see some more options are a greater spread of price points as time wears on. If I was in the market and it were a hundo or two less, even at a lower spec, I'd definitely consider it.

I've tried changing the drivers in the boot.config and nothing seems to help. I even disabled the igpu in the bios. I can play 3ds but only at 1x resolution as anything higher has slowdown and stutters. PS3 is the same. Xbox 360 is unplayable even though a video was upload by another creator running Skate 3 for 360 on the SteamDeck version of Batocera and it plays fine.

    Interesting machine (if you have the amount of money burning a hole in your pocket - somehow, I'd find a decently compact, but non-cramped mini-ITX system more interesting, but, where to start...), but, yeah, that stand? That wedge shape is cool and all, but the combo with that 'brick' of a case on top, with all the edges and chamfers and whatnots in its design, plus that old 'cheese grater' Mac Pro air vent style to boot 😄, makes the system itself kinda 'floating' above that simple shape look quite, I dunno, maybe 'unkempt' in comparison is the expression I'm searching for 🤔?
    P. S.: Sidenote: BTW, how wide approximately is your big 'Luke Skywalker' case? Somehow, to me this comes across as at least 50-60% wider than the old-fashioned 'just wide enough to fit a DVD drive into the front frame' cases I'm used to...

    I’ve seen Xbox series S brand new for $250. By far the best power bang for buck. If only it could run windows or linux… is that possible?

    Anyone has an idea if a double sided m2 ssd would fit into the secondary ssd slot? Maybe by re-arranging the antenna cable?
    Edit: it fits! However, the heat sink bequiet mc1pro is too tall. Looking for alternatives now.

    I'm confused. The title says this is the first Mini PC with a dedicated GPU, and yet you compared it to another Mini PC with a dedicated GPU. Did you mean the first smallest Mini PC with a GPU?

      I don’t consider the NUCX to be a mini PC, it’s too big. It’s certainly thin but not top-of-the-desk friendly like a typical mini PC.

      @@RetroGameCorps Thank you for that clarification. I agree with your viewpoint! But just so you know, you literally called the Nucx a mini PC in the video which was what had me confused :) Anyhoo it is really nice to know this is now an option and thanks for making the vid.
