  • Ed Solomons has a problem with his latest clayshooting pupil. Paul Childerley is a fast-action gameshooter, great on birds travelling near to him and at speed. Where he has a problem is long, hanging targets, distant loopers, and calculating straight-line lead.

Ed has a real gift for communicating to the shooter. It is really hard to slow down the mount and the pull away when you are used to game shooting.

This is great instruction. I've had pretty much the same problem switching from game shooting where a lot of the time aggressive and instinctive shooting is all that is required for coming towards and going away pheasant, the most common shots. But the looping and crossing stuff requires smoother and slower gun speed and most of all CONNECTION and then pulling away to get the correct lead. My instructor is telling me exactly the same, work backwards from the kill point to the hold point about two thirds to halfway back and from there it's eyes and not gun to the pick up point. So you see the bird and your gun starts moving to connect SLOWLY and then through to shoot,. I'm still working on being too hasty to take the shot i.e. not enough connection time but I'll get there!

I have just bought a new gun and had a round at our shooting school yesterday.
I had exactly the same problems. Well done to Paul for putting himself up for this.
It has been so helpful to see someone else struggle initially.

I'm the same, most of my shooting was pigeon, rough shooting with a bit of driven. I've always had problems with clays. Too much time to think.. I've had a break of about 8 years and I have now found out I have cross gun vision, one of the problems of getting older. Right master eye, shoot right shoulder but my left eye tries to take over. I was shooting way in front of anything from the left, way behind things from the right and to the right of anything straight. Now I know I can sort things out. I'm shooting one eyed at the moment and it seems to be working.

@@MrAbstraxsax Age has nothing to do with eye dominance. Either learn to ignore the wrong sight picture, or pick up the clay with both eyes open, then in order to bring the muzzle awareness into play to apply any required lead, close the left eye. That's all I do and it works. Dont focus on the bead, it's more in the peripheral vision, if you look at the gun you see two targets, look at the target you see two guns. The brain should be able to learn which ones the right one to use for reference and discount the other.

@@TheMoodyedge I've got things sorted now just by adding a thin strip of tape to my left side of my glasses. I can now shoot with both eyes open. My clay scores have more than doubled, bearing in mind I don't really shoot clays that often.

Who cares? You are responsible for your own safety. Often the risk to the eyes on a clay ground is shards of broken clay, not being shot in the face or a gun exploding. I have Oakley holbrook and they have more than adequate impact protection.

Depends right? They might both miss a different 30 shots. They might shoot different levels of sets. My buddy came by shooting 95 at his local place which hasn’t changed its traps around in 10 years he shot 45 at our club. I went to his for a few years because it’s cheap you can literally point your gun at where the trees are all shot up call for the clay and shoot it as it arrives to the tree like wackamole
