Don't be so open minded that your brain will fall out. There is a saying, the sure ways to failure is to listen to everyone or to listen to no-one. Learn to develop a logical and critical thinking mind by learning from good sources.
Seeing as we are all vulnerable to the self serving bias, what is a way of recognising this behaviour and to try to actually see topics as an unbiased "observer"?
I listen to several viewpoints, over several formats, and identify the stories each side doesn't cover regardless of how much merit and facts. That story, or that angle on that story, reveals the reporting bias. Also, I look for bias revealed in how a story is covered. I withhold judgement on the story and allow it to develop. I end up being the guy both sides attack but I'm dispassionate in my discussions.
Self serving Biss is nothing but only one type among many that may affect decision making. Particularly those, which are unstructured in nature. For example: in a staying-up relationship, whether one wants to sleep in the “master bed” or in one of the other bed rooms are guided by one owns’ beliefs and value systems.
