I caught a bunch of huge Shad last night in Newport MA. Gave most to these Asian guys who were fishing next to me and apparently love them. Caught a 20" one just after they left and figured I'd try it myself. Thanks for the video!
@@notsoeloquent I haven’t received any feedback that it’s not good. I normally eat the entire one by myself. If it’s good enough for President George Washington and his men…. That’s why the American Shad is also known as the founding fish . I love it. 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒
I caught a many of these in Florida last year…I tried cooking them they tasted amazing, but the dang bones were everywhere. I’ll try it again this year perhaps.
The other way, is to cut it the same way you did here, but brush oil on it and put it in the oven on low heat for 5-6 hours, or air fryer low heat for 80-90 minutes. Still makes it crispy golden brown but not all oily.
Wow! Thank you so much. Shad season is just around the corner. I will definitely try this out. This will help with my high cholesterol problem. 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒
@@JUNationFishing Though the chunks will probably need to be a bit smaller to cook all the way to the middle. It will be dried out, like fish chips. I eat the roe too. It’s very high in cholesterol, but the good kind
If not prepared or cook properly, it won’t taste good. Fish should be bled right away if you plan to eat it. If you don’t eat it the same day, make sure you soak it in milk for an hour before cooking it to get rid of the fishy smell. It is extremely boney, i.e., has lots of bones. It’s meat is soft and sweet. In my opinion, minus the bones, it tastes like steelhead. Thanks for watching. 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒
The bones are super soft. The key is to make small cuts less than 1/4 inch! Once cooked, one cannot tell that the bones are there; the bones become a part of the meat. Try it and let me know what you think. Use some dipping sauce and it will tastes even better! Thanks for stopping by. 🙏🙏🙏
I like to take the eggs from the females or the ribs. For a fish, they have a surprising amount of meat on their ribs. I'll for sure try this for cooking the rest of the fish this season!
That is a great idea. Thank you for your suggestion. I’ll try to remember for the next John Can’t Cook show. In the mean time, thank God for the fast forward button! And thank you for your visit. 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒

😮😮😮 Blessed & Grateful for your comment!!! Have a blessed day! 🙏🙏🙏
This is the easiest way I've seen to prepare shad. Definitely going to try it!
Make sure that the cross cut is thin… around 1/4 inch or thinner. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce. Grateful for the comment. 🙏🙏🙏

Could you smoke it instead of in the oven??
My brother Capt Chris loves to smoke them; I do not. Try it and let me know. 🙏🙏🙏
@@codyrunge8190 Smoking is one of, if not the best, way to prepare them. I've also pickled them which was pretty darn good as well.
Love your videos my brother 🙏
Thank you. Grateful for your comment. 🙏🙏🙏
Hey JU can you use shad eggs and meat for cTching striper?
Most definitely! Shad eggs is one of the best baits for stripers during the Shad run! 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒
@@JUNationFishing how do you keep them on the hook?
@@iklink Tie with magic thread. Works every time. 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒
@@JUNationFishing you don't cure it or anything or salt it first?
@@iklink No curing! If you don’t get a bite within 5 minutes, there ain’t no stripers nearby. That’s for real! 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒
Yeee! Thanks for the shoutout brother! When done right, shad are one of my favorite fish to eat! Nice video! 👍🏻👍🏻
Learned from watching your video Bro! Just had some the other day. A big thank you to you! 👍🙏🎣⚒
JUltimateFisherman thanks 😊 I
Planning to try some Shad fishing up there. What other fish would you say shad taste similar to? Thanks

Nice thanks for sharing. What kind of frying pan are you using and where can I get one ?
Non-stick frying pan. My lovely wife can’t remember where she purchased it. Grateful for your comment. 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒
So what happens to the little bones? They get rendered? So the basis is to cook it long?

The best part of Shad is the scale. Try the same recipe but do not remove the scale and fry it.
Wow. Thanks. Grateful for your tip. 👍🙏🎣JU Hammah⚒

Thank you for your comment. Shad tastes really good, but the bones are a nightmare!!! 👍🏽🙏🎣⚒️
have you ever tried smoking the shad first and then frying it like this after? I might try that today
