      I can attest that the S5T is an ear shredder for sure!

    Sounds great. Only once have I ever seen an SP unit working the Coalinga Branch that had a Leslie horn, but it was an RS3L. I figure it was done during the SPSF merger that failed, by Santa Fe shop forces somewhere. By the time I saw it, which was in March of 1990, it was repainted back to gray and red. Seemed strange. When I heard that, almost looked up expecting to see a Santa Fe GP30 or 35.

      Wouldn't doubt it. A lot came out of the "Shouldn't Paint So Fast" attempt.

    GOD that horn goes good for a gp-7 gp-8 or gp-9

    There was 2 SD45Rs and an SD40T-2 also confirmed to have carried 5Ts at one point in service, including on a video here on UA-cam. Truly different

    Hey y’all I gotta wonder what happened to the p5 on 3194??

  • @NSAaron

    Sounds like a full orifice S-5TRF. The 31 and 55 are reversed pointing towards the short hood of the locomotive. The 55 squeals a few times if you listen carefully. It's a S - head Leslie trademark. It's a mean sounding horn!

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains  7 років тому

      S5TF. It originally came ABF. The owner put it in it's as-pictured 31/55 reversal. We mounted it facing the long hood since the GP9 was being used on the west end of the train.

    How is it that they can be in notch 8 and yet be going about 20 mph?

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains  5 років тому

      A 10-15 pound set on the brakes will do it. The engineer is a good guy, did that knowing I was there with a video camera

    • @ReadingAreaRailfan
      @ReadingAreaRailfan 5 років тому

      @@Alwaystrains oh ok. I see alot of gp9s in videos in notch 8 going abt 20. Was that a common thing to do?

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains  5 років тому

      @@ReadingAreaRailfan I'm honestly not sure. A heavy load on the drawbar could do it too, but I'm no engineer. I can only wish I was around when geep 9s were an every-day sight on the RR

    • @ReadingAreaRailfan
      @ReadingAreaRailfan 5 років тому

      @@Alwaystrains GP9's still are used on class 1 railroads actualy. CP owns a few i think and CSX has a C & O one i think. I wasnt around when you would see them every day either. Im 13 lol.

    I thought the SP 3209 was the lone SDP45 with a special horn on him. I do not think my memory is playing tricks on me

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains  7 років тому

      Perhaps. Admittedly I was not around to see the SD45's. We were mostly looking to answer the question of whether or not there were any SP units with Leslie horns, and the answer is yes, even if it is only one.

    Great Sounding Leslie, great lookin lil Geep, but the two just don't mix... in my opinion. Either way, awesome video!

    • @Alwaystrains
      @Alwaystrains  8 років тому +2

      Yeah, certainly not an SP horn. But I bet if the unit was painted in Seaboard or Frisco colors it would be perfectly fine haha. We just thought it'd be fun to try something different for a change. Thanks for viewing!

      Too bad they couldn't have cleaned all that chalkiness off the paint, and maybe given it a wax job before sending it out. I always loved those old SP Geeps with the gyralight on them.
