I agree tremendously! The 8bit gameplay has aged a bit never the less a tru classic for all time. (I still adore stage 1 in gaiden 1) but all that was energized by the timeless 8bit track that kept the action going

Me and my best friend (He passed away a few years ago, God rest his soul 🙏) found the NG arcade game at a Putt-Putt back in 89 over our spring break and loved it. Spent many quarters that week. I remember my mom taking me to get the NES version at Toys R Us later that year. Called my friend down to my house, popped it in the NES and.... we were underwhelmed. It was just so different from the arcade version. Of course, we gave the game a chance and it went on to become one of our favorite NES games of all time but it didn't start out that way. Good memories. 😁
Excellent video as always. I had no idea that the arcade game and NES version were designed at the same time with different developers. Learn something new everyday. 👍

I fell into that trap too Patman...
As we've discussed before, I had C64 and the NES wasn't particularly popular in the UK, owing to most parents buying their kids 8 bit Micros.
The coin-op version was a staple of one of the seaside amusement arcades I spent most weekends and summers inhabiting, so when a buddy of mine got a secondhand NES for his birthday, complete with several games including Shadow Warriors, I peddled my BMX to his house with Lance Armstrong levels of performance enhanced speed, only to end up playing the most infuriating and evil platformer I had ever attempted!!!
It was the great TMNT C64 scandal all over again... 😫

Dude, the seaside arcades were amazing in their prime.
Some of them are still there, but they are a lot more "family fun centre" orientated.
They do have a selection of some of the more expensive cabinets, but mostly they are full of ball pits, indoor softplay, terrible snack bars, and infuriating and overpriced grab machines.
When I was a regular visitor they were a heady mix of classic, contemporary (for the time) arcade cabinets, slot machines, dart boards, pool tables, and penny falls.
I'd hustle pool for a few pounds and then spend most in the arcade machines, but keep a pound back to gamble on a slot machine and hopefully start the illicit circle all over again lol

Interestingly nobody talks on how the last level of the arcade game rips of Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's illustrations for the backgrounds. The game actually uses illustrations for the antagonists of the second part of the manga reproduced in pixel form. It's not a case of inspiration because they are the same illustrations reproduced in pixel art.

Great video. Being from England I remember the "ninja" thing in the 80's, my neighbour (probably about 10 at the time) could easily buy throwing stars and other ninja equipment on mail order and after playing "The Last Ninja" on the C64 he did (his mum didn't know). Not sure if the change to "heros" or "shadows" made to much difference but how weird that kids could buy that stuff back then :)

It was a different time. I can recall those mail order ads in the back of magazines where you Could order nunchucks and various other martial arts items. When I was nine or 10 I can recall walking three blocks up to our nearest grocery store and buying a pack of cigarettes for my mother as well as a few Lottery tickets. It was like this for a long time.

I thought the arcade version was the coolest game but only came across it a couple times. One day I saw the PC version in a store and bought it. I was so excited! When I played it I was very disappointed but figured at least it worked. If I'm not mistaken it only had 2 levels. Then I was really disappointed and felt ripped off. Great seeing footage of the arcade again. That part where you cross the highway brought back great memories!

All I ever had was the Tiger Handheld version that my Aunt gave me when I was a kid, and I still have it today. Time and Throwing Stars would always run out, and both were required to beat the levels. I only thought it was neat when it made an appearance in "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare."

Oh man you made my heart beat fast today 💖😊 i was in high school when the NES trilogy came out, never had the chance to play the arcade cause it never came to Guatemala, Ninja Gaiden one was the hardest to beat, specially that part when you had to hit on the nose a boss, it took me many hours to beat it 😂 while listening to you review of Ninja Gaiden 2 i thought of the waterfal screen and you showed it, Ahaha!!! Ninja Gaiden 3 was hard to beat, there was an alien at the end as far as i remember..... never knew many conversions existed until today, thanks to you. Recently my son played this game on the xbox but the first time i saw it i was like ☹ i just..... didn't like it.
Thank you for this wonderful video, until the end i noticed it was 27 mns long!!!

Very nice retrospective so far, I had no idea that so many ports of the original arcade game existed! I have played the arcade game and the NES trilogy, haven't tried the rest. However, the Black Sabbath song that the arcade game ripped off was not entitled "I Am Iron Man", it's just called "Iron Man" (although the words "I am Iron Man" are spoken at the beginning of the song). Take it from someone who has listened to their 1970 album "Paranoid" more times than any sane human being should!

I remember getting Ninja Gaiden for the Atari Lynx. I'd never played the arcade game, but had played the NES version. I'd thought that the game had been cut down, to fit on the little Lynx. Little did I realise that is was a pretty much a conversion of the arcade game.

I never got that impression of the NES game vs. the Atari Lynx. Ninja Gaiden was a face paced game on the NES, while the arcade game had a slower pace, more akin to something like Final Fight. Looking at the arcade game footage, it is clearly a slower paced game, like the Lynx game.

3:18 - Maybe. But their reaction speed increases drastically, in stages and the timing for getting the first hit changes. Spamming attacks like in 4:51 will get you killed quick.
In the NES games, the dragon sword range is shorter with every installment. In the 1st one, it's vertical/horizontal range was great. In the 2nd one, the vertical range was incredibly reduced. In the 3rd one, unless you're using the sword power-up, the range is shorter than the sword itself.
