  • I Love and Hate Octopath Traveler - Octopath Traveler. Where do I even begin? The basics, I guess. Octopath Traveler is a turn-based JRPG by Square Enix. Most of the people I know who've played it have enjoyed it and with 86% positive reviews on Steam, I think it's safe to say it's been well-received. I went in expecting some good times, a fairly lengthy campaign, and good fodder for a decent video. But after 82 hours of gameplay, I can honestly say I could have never predicted just how much I simultaneously love and hate this game.

If there's one thing Octopath got right 100% it's the art style. I've always said games like pokemon would've been far better off going for an art style like this rather than going 3D.

Agreed. Octopath is one of, if not the most beautiful JRPGs I've played. For all my mixed feelings on the game, nothing can take away from how great the art is.
I also would have preferred it if Pokemon kept sprites as opposed to 3D models. IMO, they age much better and it's probably easier to make hundreds of sprites than hundreds of 3D models with each new game.

My issue with Octopath is just the repetitive nature of the game.
The fact is that the narrative just does not compel the player to go onto the conclusion.
I finished Oberic's story, and that was it. I was done. The grindy nature of the game, the easy optimization of classes just made every fight a repeat of each other.
I really think if it took a page from Megami Tensei, and added some kind of stakes, the game would have been better. But it just does not help with the way the narrative structure was created.
Namely, I feel there should have been party variant scenes for each character. In other words, 8 possible scenes for each chapter. Because as is, the party just feels like they are there for convenience, nothing more.
Not one did I feel Oberic and Therion's plot would work together, but here we got Oberic on a theiving mission with no comment what so ever. It broke immersion for me, and then the magic faded. I tried to press on, but I was no longer playing a role, just a passive observer in every amusement ride the game offered.

"So the religion in this game's world..." (Touhou music starts playing in the background)
Really fitting choice there, context or not.

The story of octopath is good but I had to grind from time to time because I was advancing too fast on the story.

I like this game and I also hate this game and i haven't even finished it yet, I think the best way to play this game is to put it on a side game as you play something else. Just so then you don't get burned out from it cause I can easily see that and for me the characters stories are pretty good but also pretty generic which is fine because it is suppose to take homage to the 16-bit era of jrpgs. I do want to play the second game since some of my main complaints are fix such as no connect story til the end and the zoomed spotlight look that the game has.7/10.

It's pretty funny how this game is basically a lighter version of Live-a-live's story... and then they just straight up remade that game afterwards.

Haven't played LaL yet, but that has me curious. I'd have loved it if Octopath leaned into its story elements a lot more than it did.

God I wish the bloom wasn't so eye-rape tier. I'd easily bump this up from a 3/10 to a 5/10 if it could be disabled.
Yes, I admit I regret playing this. But I know what would make that so much less intense of a regret.

Currently on my first playthrough. I'm doing a blind run, then using walkthroughs to clean up the other endings and any important content I missed. Then I'll get started on the video itself. I just need time

just finished watching, combat sounds okay but really dont like the way the story doesn't connect the characters as a group in any meaningful way, like they were taking inspiration from final fantasy 6 in that every character has their own reason to go after the bug bad and go through their own arc in the process, but didn't understand that ff6 also brought everyone together as a group in a meaningful way as well.
I haven't been keeping up with my jrpgs anyway, but I'll think I'll give this one a miss.
Have you considered looking at the disgaea series if you want more in depth battle mechanics?

The game's got a lot of good to it and I do appreciate the attempt the story made to break the mold, but it just couldn't commit to it IMO.
I don't think your time would be wasted if you gave it a shot, but there are plenty of other great titles out there so it's reasonable to pass on Octopath.
Disgaea is definitely on my "eventually" list. That ditzy demon is exactly the kind of character I love, so I do want to play/cover it before too long.
