Living Room - Abbey Lincoln

- Abbey Lincoln was without doubt one of the greatest ever jazz singers to live on this planet. Of that there is no argument. But what she was just as good at was writing and composing. Here, she takes a Max Roach tune and not only adds lyrics but she re-arranges the time signature. Max wrote it to play at a 5/4 beat. Abbey, ever the swinger, slows it down to a hip 4/4. She recorded this tune in Japan in 1973. She didn't have her own band with her so used local musicians. She said that the piano player and bassist were very strong players but the drummer wasn't quite as strong. So she asked Miles Davis (who just so happened to be touring Japan at the time) if she could borrow his drummer. Miles not only sent his drummer but he sent his sax man and conga player. He also showed up himself to just make sure everything went well. Things went better than well because the entire album is a gem. This is just one selection from "People In Me".
Lineup:
Abbey Lincoln - vocals
Hiromasa Suzuki - piano
Kunimitsu Inaba - bass
Al Foster - drums
James Mtume - congas
Dave Liebman - tenor sax
Brilliant
This song was my mantra at one time, some years ago. It was so wonderful of you to compliment the supreme Lady. Miss Lincoln truly is a master interpreter of song with a powerful voice. I thank you so much for this. Yes, the album is a gem. Your UA-cam channel is as well!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoy the music. Boppish regards, my friend.
So kind of you *****. What a pleasure!
Thank you for the history lesson. All great performances and recordings have a rich history behind them, that is often unknown.
This is one of my favorite songs.

The best 🌹💯🎶
Thank you Willie for posting Abbey Lincoln's beautifully swinging version of Max Roach's Living Room. Such a great lyric, and delivered with a sweet, light-hearted sincerity.
