I thought the episode was pretty good, and you are correct DRWolf, this episode finally answered a question people in the fandom have been asking for years, the question being "Will we ever see the CMC's as adults" and lo and behold Hasbro decided to answer that question, this maybe the first time we see the CMC's as adults but it won't be last time, in fact i think younger audiences might find this episode to be somewhat relatable, i mean it is true being a kid can be tough especially when growing up, but being an adult isn't easy either, in fact in some cases being an adult is worse than being a kid, not that it's competition, but i'm sure you all understand what i'm saying.

I appreciate that aspect, it is not a fun or easy topic but an important one. She was born with a limitation and has to learn to live with it. Often kids shows will find some magic fix for a problem like that rather than teaching that in the real world you have to find a way to deal with it and succeed anyway.

To be fair, MLP has made TONS of Disney references, including BATB, so this episode is no different.
As for the episode itself, it was pretty good, even with the obvious message. It's great hearing the CMC's voice actresses using their natural voices for the adult CMC, which sort of fits with how the show has grown and is approaching its end. I really hope they'll all continue voice acting in other shows, or at least do something great with their lives after the show ends.

Now it could be that the writers didn't really intend on doing this, but I noticed that Scootaloo was never really bothered with the fact that she still couldn't fly as an adult, her wings are still tiny. This could be a way of showing that she's made peace with her disability and can still find ways to use her wings with her scooter.
Of course, it is possible that she was just so excited for the fair and never really thought about it, but I do think that the former idea would be a nice subtle way of how somebody can still shine even with a physical disability.

Scootaloo (once she's REALLY grown-up) could still take up the sport of hang-gliding, I imagine. Next best thing to flying. Christopher Reeve took it up, to train for his big-screen Man of Steel debut in the "Superman" 1978 movie.

Here's another thing I said in that leaked episode:
"Honestly, with DHX playing it safe on certain things, this episode, while alright and effective as it is, feels like it could go in an older season (maybe season 3?). Yeah, not like the writers can go back and insert their story ideas into older seasons, but you'd think they'd take the chance in this final season to explore some more speculations and themes concerning the CMC growing up. From whether Scootaloo would be able to fly, to how things like time and distance would affect their relationship, to how they'd function individually. I wasn't really satisfied with how "The Last Crusade" (and now this) resolved things, but followup stories on the matters still seem viable for them, whether in the show or in fanfiction. And thinking back to past episodes (like "On Your Marks" and "Marks and Recreation"), and then on the epilogue, there's room for us to connect their themes with the current state of affairs surrounding our favorite trio."

No, I didn’t think of Gremlins when I saw that odd-looking pet originally, but I haven’t seen Gremlins all that much.
My biggest problem with the episode is this:
This is a show that has continuity from one episode to the next, and at least one winter episode has come and gone each season, which means 9 years have passed in the MLP universe since we were first introduced to the CMC.

Like the episode where Angel and fluttershy switched bodies I actually didn’t see it coming until it was “hinted” right before it happens. It’s a pretty nice story explaining the responsibilities that adults have to do. Even I have to deal with responsibilities of my own, sure I get to play Star Wars battlefront 2 if I have time. But work does come first, besides fun is usually the best thing to do last. Nevertheless I’m still looking forward to this vacation that me and my family’s been planning for months. Basically planning to go all over Florida from cocoa beach to Orlando And etc. i’ve been looking forward to this vacation for along time.
I’m getting off topic though, if you ask me I was just repeatedly saying “oh no” after seeing the grown crusaders giving those teenagers the worst advice ever known. This is basic growing up too fast scenario, still it’s a nice episode. But really bums me out the episode is that scootaloo hasn’t gotten fully grown wings, I get it she really unique but must they make her late bloomer?... One of the things I was really looking forward to in the series is seeing her being capable of flying. Oh well you know what they say beggars can’t be choosers.

It was great that the CMC were turn into adults. I don't know what reaction to that pony when they were turned back into foals. I was thinking that the CMC discover an older pony might need their help. I think the CMC are about to do something before the series end. We will have to wait to find out what it is.

Honestly This episode reminded me of Movies that follow this trope, the most famous example would most likely be Tom Hanks in "Big", I'm still wondering what it would have been like if they tried the Opposite Approach, like take an Old Character, like Granny Smith or Princess Celestia or Luna or even Starswirl, and have said character revert back in a Child, then see just how they would have handled such a story.

This was one of those episodes that's on the very high end of Okay, the type that's almost a good moral episode overall. For some reason this should have aired earlier before season 9. But hey, at least we finally see what the adult version of the CMC look like! :D

I don’t wanna grow up, but I’m capable of taking care of myself, and I’m home alone a lot. I make myself food, take care of my own hygiene and I take care of the dog for the most part when I’m not at school. Growing up really is hard to do tho. Still will always have that kid in me, forever.

Starting from here... I believe my predictions in the form of former idea for MLP Band come true. In the epilogue: all three CMCs all grow up in the end and it's now true. What didn't come true was that Apple Bloom didn't fall in love, but that's okay. So all in all, my prediction on the CMC was almost right on. In fact, I saw this episode coming miles away before it was released.

1a: I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that they never asked Pinkie. And you can't make the excuse for her VA not being there, because Andrea Libman also voices Fluttershy, who is in this episode. Even if Pinkie isn't the most mature of ponies, I think it would hurt Pinkie's feelings that she wasn't even a last resort choice.
1b: My theory behind the scenes as to why Pinkie wasn't asked was that the script originally did have them asking her, but it was cut for time. They probably even used the same reasoning for it, that Pinkie isn't the best choice for a responsible pony.
2: I'm glad I'm not the only one to have seen the Beauty and the Beast reference. I'm convinced that it's a reference, because the similarities are just too obvious to be coincidence.
3: I'd argue that play doesn't have to be earned per se. But, I do believe that play comes second to work. I suppose it depends on the situation though. In a workplace, you earn vacation time. But you don't specifically earn play. Once you're done with your work, you can play all you want. Earning vacation time is really just accumulating more time to play if you want to look at it like that. The thing is that even fi you take the "work is good, play is earned" quote as is, it's not taking into account that children have a different view of the world than adults do. That's why there's commonly a divide between a child's perspective and an adult's perspective. The lack of experience of the world is the reason why the world seems so much simpler to a child than it does to an adult. Sometimes, I wish the world was as simple as it is from the perspective of a child (that's in part because of my autistic point of view though). Even as an adult, I have trouble understanding how you're supposed to live as an adult.
4: I think the point of this episode is that it's moral is a message to both children and adults. The message to children is that the world is not as simply as you think, and that how you view adults is not as accurate as you may think. The message to adults is that children view the world in a much different way than adults, so when you try to explain something to them and they don't understand, adults tend to take for granted things that children don't understand, so patience is a virtue.
5: I agree that the CMCs were regressed a little for this episode. Though I believe it was unintentional. I have trouble believing that they didn't know that you have to get on specific trains to get to specific destinations (considering that Spike knows how trains work, and he's roughly the same age as them). But he grew up and learned with Twilight, and it's never been established that the CMCs know what to do on trains. The CMCs have matured over the years, and were even made tutors of Twilight's School of Friendship. But I think that people often forget that they are still children, and their views of the adult world was never addressed. The aging up process was also an issue, because the intent was for the CMCs to experience a day as adults, but still having the minds of children. In order to make this work, the writers had to focus on what makes the CMCs still children to make the difference more noticeable. This creates a cognitive whiplash.

Here's an observation I made. All of the season 9 episodes have cliche morals but dang do they have awesome stories. I'm thinking that the staff are just re-using morals so they can focus on making the last season the funnest one. Also- 3:15 Appleblooms face xD

This episode made me facepalm because I’m an adult and I know what’s going to happen in the episode, and I was waiting for the train wreck to happen and see a real adult call them out on it. Also there’s soo much more to bring an adult.
Being responsible-They irresponsibly took the wrong train, got lost, and unwisely advised a couple of kids to “share” a pet, I believe that the one who is the most in the pets life knows best for them.
Being caring-They definitely didn’t care about what happens next, they just focused on having fun

I noticed that the one who suggested putting the pet in the showcase happened to also be an adult. That may have just been a coincidence, but it looks like subtle writing. Kinda showed how adults don't always know what they're talking about either.

Yes, that was immediately what I thought of the enchanted flower. I think it's a little too obvious to not be a coincidence. The only ones who shouldn't get that reference are those who never saw the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast.

  • @danielrhouck
    @danielrhouck 3 роки тому

Yes, I also immediately thought of Beauty and the Beast when I saw the flower. And the episode was predictable, except for exactly what would happen with Bloofy (or maybe that too if you know anything about pre-G4?), but I don't mind that as much as you do.
As for my thoughts on the episode:
I think I would have liked this episode on its own, but I just could not get past where it is in the series when I watched it for the first time just now. I think this episode would have worked a lot better earlier. By this point, the CMCs a) have been pretty independent in a lot of other episodes and could have made it on their own, b) should have immediately known to tell Twilight about the flower doing weird wish magic, and c) should know that being big is *not* all it takes and more about where their limits were. They've even taken the train all by themselves earlier this season. My first thought before the credits even started was that they should be able to go by themselves.
Normally I don't complain about characters regressing; as the show points out a couple times, sometimes you need to learn a lesson more than once. But in the case of the CMC this is just several seasons too late. It would have best as one of the first CMC episodes after they got their cutie marks, maybe their first one together after the Tender Taps one. By the time they started the Cutie Mark Day Camp it was already too late. It would be like having Dragonshy now, when Fluttershy has already faced a lot of scary monsters, and has been to the dragon lands multiple times. Sorry, too late for that story unless you frame it as a flashback or use different characters or something.
(Other nitpick: Applebloom explicitly mentioned knowing everything they needed in her wish, and Sweetie Belle mentioned taking care of themselves; even if they weren't already mature enough for this usually, that wish should have made them so. Just remove that part, or change "then we'd know everything we'd need to get to the fair and back with no problem" to "then they'd let us go to the fair and back by ourselves" and get rid of that last bit of Sweetie Belle's, and it works a lot better)

So, Scootaloo is old enough to decide for herself to do death-defying stunt work with the Washouts, but not old enough to take a train without a chaperone? Either the show is wildly inconsistent about how young the CMC (and the young ponies in general) are or Equestrian public transportation is much more dangerous than I would have thought.

I want to see how badly the CMC got scolded after this by AJ, Dash, and Rarity. I mean they ventured out on their own, they got lost in a swamp, told false information to foals OLDER than them , and nearly destroyed appleloosa. And all this happened after they were strictly told NO, many times!
