Why "Old Money" Families HATE Dubai

For them, Dubai's flaunting of riches and unabashed commercialism is like serving Dom Pérignon in a plastic cup at the Ascot races-Utterly horrifying.

---------------------------------------------------
Welcome to today's episode of Old Money Luxury, where we delve into a fascinating topic that has been stirring debate among the elite circles of society: the love-hate relationship between the world's Old Money aristocracy and the sparkling city of Dubai.
Dubai, often dubbed the "new money" capital of the world, is a hotspot of modern wealth and innovation. Here, skyscrapers and luxury cars are as commonplace as desert dunes. But why does this haven of nouveau riche draw such skepticism from the Old Money elite?
👥 Human Element:
The Old Money elite don't just see wealth as a balance sheet; it's a complex network of multi-generational relationships and social alliances. Families like the Kennedys and Roosevelts have nurtured these relationships for generations. Dubai, a city known for its transience and diverse population, struggles to provide the same stable social network that Old Money families are accustomed to.
📚 Education and Social Circles:
In Old Money hubs like Boston, London, or even San Francisco, lineage members often share educational backgrounds, attending prestigious institutions like Harvard or Oxford. In contrast, Dubai lacks such culturally embedded educational systems and long-standing social clubs.
📈 Investment Strategies:
Old Money families are typically conservative investors, focusing on assets that provide long-term stability. Dubai's economy, in contrast, thrives on high-risk ventures like luxury real estate and cryptocurrencies-sectors that are often volatile and speculative, making them less appealing to conservative investors.
💰 Financial Advisors:
Old Money families often work with specialized financial advisors well-acquainted with their investment goals and profiles. Dubai's financial sector is more generalized, lacking this level of personalization.
🎭 Cultural Institutions:
In Old Money circles, patronage of the arts and philanthropy are not just about tax breaks but also about investing in long-lasting cultural legacies. Dubai still lacks these long-term cultural pillars that are integral to Old Money lifestyles.
🕶️ Discretion vs. Display:
Old Money families value privacy and discretion, while Dubai is a spectacle of public life filled with high-profile events and ostentatious displays of wealth.
🔒 Privacy Concerns:
The Old Money ethos places a premium on privacy and personal space. Dubai's extensive security and surveillance measures can sometimes feel invasive to those who highly value their privacy.
📸 Media Attention:
Old Money families often seek out quieter locales where they can avoid media scrutiny, another factor that makes Dubai less appealing to them.
So, could Dubai ever attract the Old Money elite? Time will tell, but for now, the differences in investment strategies, cultural values, and lifestyle preferences make the city less appealing to those who have been wealthy for generations.
COMMENT: Have you been to Dubai - or would like to visit - and if you have, what did you think of it?
I dont want to go to Dubaï because its too much about showing your fortune to others not classic lifestyle.
Dubai porta potty, nuff said (you don't want to look up what that means).
You can have it if you got the cash…stay off the radar and follow the rules and no one will bother you…so works out for most people
One word - No! and No!
Yes. I love Dubai. I have been vacationing there twice a year for the past four years, and have flown through Dubai Airport DXB on Emirates for the past twenty-five years. I have high status at Western-named/managed/owned hotel resorts. The staff are perfectly trained, and with respect for hard work and making money. There is no laziness. That said, I never interact with actual Emiratis, except maybe at DXB customs, and even then, I've been directed by the admittedly muscular handsome Emirati official to avoid him and use the self-service automated computerized passport gate.
I'm among the 'no money' crowd, but even I find Dubai offensive. I find it so, based on its grotesque displays of wealth, the utter lack of good taste on show, the transitory nature of the place, and the lack of privacy. But what I find particularly offensive, is the treatment and exploitation of their workers.
I'm also of the "no money" folk... but Dubai disgusts me too
Dubai represents all that's wrong in modern society. Its absolutely false, a futile "Alice on wonderland ", a " facebook" youtubish kind of "happiness", an absolute representation of poor spirits, abuse and mere showoff of easy money, lack of respect for basic human rights and a very " Disneyland " meets Vegas kind of place.
✋️ We are a Club. Let's get jackets.

Well said. It's a grotesque, crass show of tasteless wealth to a sickening degree.
Wealth whispers. Money shouts. Class is quiet. Crass is loud.

So true
My dear its called snobby!
I promise you Dubai’s upper class is very wealthy, might seem like they’re over the top but thats just to draw in tourists. You don’t even see Emiratis out and about in Dubai, just the exploited class
Once upon a time, old money was new money.
nah that's not it😂
@@NoctLightCloudwhat is it then?
@@fatemad4012 did you even watch this video? Most of NM will never be able to blend into OM, because the NM people blasted their wealth all over the media, while OM folks don't want their wealth to be known - they'll thus not want to have any association with NM folks. (Also, OM established their wealth over generations, fostering a naturally evolved mindset. You can tell by looking at the behaviour of the new Chinese millionaires when visiting Europe vs Old Money Europeans in Europe. Heck even OM Chinese vs NM Chinese.)
@@NoctLightCloud I understand my family is the old money also but my father don't have of it because we couldn't inherited it but we are trying to built new money but I like old money behavior
Spot on.
Although, I prefer Old Money's ways. I understand why New Money behaves the way it's behaving. Since OM has already established its closed, discrete private social circle and NM knows this, so what's the point of trying to establish connections with an OM family? NM just has set the trend for this new generation, and at some point, OM were NM flashing their wealth in their own ways.
Traveling is one of my hobbies, but I'd rather visit Elisha's cave or King David's tomb than Dubai, I am a bit tired of being surrounded by empty voided vain people.
Well if New money cant get in OM, why not create they own OM, but instead they behave like ....
@@asjaosaline5987Probably 'cause "Old money" is old and "New money" new?
I thought internet is convenient way to reach new business for more introverted people to grow business.... previously that wasnt around but nowadays it is. Not a full replacement to meeting people real life(to keep as human) but helps avoid those voided people exposure.
I see Dubai more as an investment destination or a connection to the world. Even old money is deeply invested in Dubai in some way or the other.
I have been to Dubai - my travel and accommodation costs were completely covered by my tax return. Most of all I enjoyed Dubai Green Planet - it made me feel happy as a child. I else enjoyed swimming in the gulf with tropical fish and wearing those white Arab clothes
Dubai is for people, who want to be seen - and who you don't want to be seen with. People, who aren't welcome at places, that you can't just buy yourself in. And I think, it's good, that they have a place, where they can go. And even better, that it's nowhere near the places, I prefer to go to.
I've no doubt there is an "old money" network among the Emiratis, much of which probably plays out in the desert.
There is just nothing more embarrassing and confronting than having a self made billionaire asking an old money millionaire how they "made" their money. That's all there is to it.
I have never been to Dubai, but I had a friend who got a teaching job there . She had to apply for a permit to be able to drink alcohol. I believe she was only there for 6 months, the kids she was teaching were extremely spoiled pain in the butts and she hates it.
Dubai is in a Muslim country, Alcohol shouldn't even be legal
Bullshit permits have been cancelled more than 12 year’s ago and if shes none Muslim she doesn’t need one it was only made for muslims and even at the time of the permits no one checked and cared to be honest
It is an Islamic country and by the way this should be beneficial to your alcoholic friend to come to her senses
My friend is not Muslim but loves to teach and was initially genuinely excited about the opportunity to to have a teaching position in Dubai. The drink permit was an interesting but small speed bump at worst, she is intelligent and understands cultural differences well enough. She just likes the occasional pint of beer or two which is especially refreshing on a warm day-that is part of her culture if you can wrap your mind around that concept. What really compelled her to resign early was because the students were extremely spoiled and difficult to impossible to teach, and to her surprise saddened when she announced that she would be leaving Dubai. They really loved her but…she took her job seriously and needed to succeed at it and was unable to get cooperation and support.
@@juliadplume3097 whatever you say , she doesn’t need a permit 😂i think your friend is the spoiled one that thought she could be pampered and covered by brands and jewellery once she starts working here.
Dubai needs to be that way to be seen and heared.
Things keep changing, at an ever accelerating pace. Industrial steel production no longer drives generational wealth like it once did. The last 5 mins of this video are probably of most value. Thanks for constantly putting information like this together 🙏🏻👍🏻
I could not watch the whole video. I love this channel. But today… I could not listen to more of this. .. yes Dubai does not have the same Harvard and old Museum that you video creator have in Boston or NewYork.. but Dubai is working hard to be with the bright side of the world, with art and culture not with radicalism or darkness ideologies, example. They just opened a new Opera house 4 years ago where I watched Swan Lake ballet last week. So in Dubai they are working hard. I want to tell you: only 400 years ago America was not a thing, and had no history and no museums… and people from Europe used to talk about US like you are now talking about Dubai. Bu the way, there is Louvre Abu Dhabi open already in UAE and Gogenheim is coming soon… why do u think these museums are selling franchise to Dubai and Abu Dhabi? Because old money needs new money to survive. Lastly. I m not from Dubai but I lived here 15 years and lived in US 2 years and I love both. Please stop belittling nations… and appreciate hardwork please. Thanks

My uncle was an friend and business advisor for the head of commerce in Dubai. He said it is just a tourist attraction with nice weather in the winter for some people. Yes, he sailed on his big yacht and stayed at the palm hotel.

Exactly. I share this sentiment.
You mean British people looked at it like that rich fat lady on Titanic? Rich but no class?
True that. Many of today's American Old Money families originated during the Gilded Age, and they based their style in what they gathered from observing the European aristocracy, who, in turn, perceived them as nouveau riche. This all is very cyclical.
Unless oil money will run out then Dubai couldn't create more wealth at least america with innovation and technology use that old money to create even bigger money

I'm not sure why so many of these vids about Old Money show clips from Succession as a backdrop. Logan Roy and his family are the epitome of Nouveau Riche rather than old money. Yes, in the show he married an English semi-aristocrat, but there's certainly no upper class lineage in his own family background. Unless they practised the ultimate in stealth-wealth and specifically chose to live on a council estate in Dundee!
That would be stealthy!

lol "Dust storms and Lamborghinis". Vegas in a nutshell. 😂
When it comes to Monaco his narrative changed... Some folks just know how to down grade places that are just not the west.
Old Money invests in real estate by giving loans to the one who owns it. When they can't pay it back, Old Money swoops in and takes it. Dubai was given loans to build the city while crude oil was maxing out. The rug was pulled out from under them when the price dropped to $50 per barrel.(price of crude oil starts in NY, not OPEC) Dubai, couldn't pay the loan back and Old Money families were ready to collect. However, Dubai went to their arab brothers and together - several arab countries paid back the loan - and the Old Money families were unable to take the city. That's why they hate Dubai. They lost the bet.
I never thought of it this way. But I still see Old Money Western names: Armani, J.W.Marriott, Sofitel, Waldorf-Astoria, et al. I think it's for the Old Money designers and hoteliers, and not for the Old Money bankers, investors, doctors, teachers, and artists.
"lost the bet" even though the arab countries were given permission to pay back the loan by who? & who invented their petrol business/scam & gave them the market in the first place?
You give them market, with your rules, so they will build it, and then you take it away when a rule is broken. (which you knew it would be). They (TPTB) do this all over the world. South America, Africa, where ever they want a foothold. If you live long enough, & know what to pay attention too, you will see it in real time.@@DennisMHenderson
@@DennisMHenderson oh my God. Who invented the petrol business? Please, no human has ever given oil or gold mines or Phosphate business to another human for free… it s nature, natural resources, (it s God… ) and companies who helped locate and extract these resources they monopolised exploitation for themselves with contracts of 30 years and beyond…. So I agree with all the points bc I tend to operate the same way but in my tax bracket(Old Middle Class Money). I'm an introvert and conservative so I respect the way they carry themselves. But being from "old money" is only respected in countries without class mobility. Today its more impressive to be "independently wealthy" bc you earned your wealth bc of YOUR success. "old money" is almost embarrassing, you're wealthy but not successful there is difference. These days its more about how you spend the wealth YOU earned with "class." So Dubai's wealthy lack "class"
Agree with you! Best comment ever! I don't care how much your parents have if you by yourself achieved nothing.

NewYork had no histoy culture art when it was founded too
I don't like to visit in Dubai, I have read too much how foreign workers are treated as slaves, porta potties etc. Disgusting.
Dubai is the new Monaco of old. Today's old money is yesterday's nouveau riche and their playgrounds were the likes of Monaco back then. So in the end, there is no real difference except the benefit of time.
Old money used to be new money. I don't like the behavior of new money but if you research old money, then you will see they all came from new money and they behaved like new money then. Even the ancestors of royalty/nobility/gentry of each country had to go to war, grab lands within their country, colonize other countries, steal riches of other countries and even their own countryfolks to be able to enrich themselves.
That is why we have the term "spoils of war" or confiscation of properties, and it has always been this way all over the world for the centuries. Human history has always been very bloody. Power and wealth go hand in hand and that is why the rich are influential.
The old rich now may seem more cultured and less uncouth but you don't know what is going behind the scenes for them to retain their power, wealth, and influence. There are people doing their dirty work for them even though it may not be as bloody as before.
I agree, thank you
It's the flashing version of New York that doesn't showcase any of it's history the same way other old money cities do.

Most of the families with wealth in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait City, and other modern metropolitan centers in the Middle East are most definitely generational wealth and power brokers. Even when they were just nomadic sheikhs in the desert, they were the wealthiest sheikhs in the desert and worked hard to ensure their children inherited their lands, power, and wealth. Hello, I just wanted to offer some food for thought. I am a lower class American who married into a middle class Arab family. Although my husband's family is not profoundly wealthy, they have many of the same values that Euro-American old money families do. In fact, these values are relatively common among Arabs in general.
Maybe the problem when Euro-American old money families go to Dubai (or anywhere in the Middle East) is not that their values do not exist there, but that they are unable to communicate with the people who have those values.
The OM people also started with lavish houses and glitter. They changed because Europeans common people turned against the elite. That is why they prefer to hide. Not because of good morals. 😂

I feel really sorry for people who are too afraid to leave the comfort of their home and experience other cultures simply because they don't speak the language. I hate Dubai, it's an offensive , tawdry , unethical and the most contaminating place in the world. The destroy an entire ecosystem to build this horror of concrete!
