- A deadly storm that has spanned the country is leaving many families snowed-in in Buffalo, New York. WIVB Buffalo reporter Dave Greber joins "CBS News Mornings" with a look at the situation there and how it compares to blizzards in years past.

My family was lucky we did not lose power or heat but I have a elderly lady next door and we would constantly check on her. Now we are trying to dig out. The city of buffalo is a mess it will take a while to get back to normal

That's what happens when people ignore science for decades. We've known about climate change for over 50 years and we didn't do anything about it, we didn't change or adapt, we keep burning fossil fuels, people keep driving cars and going on vacations, we keep poluting and multiplying exponentially like cockroaches. The bigger we get as a civilization the bigger these problems will get and so far there is no long term, sustainable solution to the problem. Our entire way of life is powered by fossil fuels, we don't even have the technology to make a full switch to renewables, even if we wanted to (clearly we don't). The bill keeps adding up and eventually we will have to face the consequences of not paying it.

Bottom line is people have to take responsibility for themselves because no one else is gonna, or always can. Have food and water stocked, a camp stove, another source of heat if possible. People there are used to winter weather and they knew this was coming. It's unfortunate that it came when it did, Christmas time. Neighbors keep track of neighbors and check on each other. These storms are becoming more extreme, more life threatening. We're gonna have to take care of ourselves and others and don't depend on the government or anyone else to do it for us

@sticth people were given a full week to prepare for this ridiculously terrible storm coming across the country. In 1977 people were given about 1 hr is all the time they got. People scrambled to get home from work, but couldn't. Most people worked in downtown Buffalo. This time many businesses shutdown. People were told to stay off the streets & given a precise time of when the snow was to start & it did right on time. But people didn't listen & clogged the streets preventing 1st responders & utilities from getting to people. This mess falls on the people NOT THOSE in charge

Saying that people are "using this storm as an excuse to steal" is insane. If anyone is taking things from stores it's probably blankets, sleeping bags, boots, kerosene heaters, flashlights, water and other things so they don't die! He just said almost 30 people had died from the cold - even those in their homes. I don't condone theft, but I do support being bold enough to keep your family alive, given the choice!

Was not fun to be stuck in my house for 4 days during Christmas without most of my family being able to be there.
Always keep exhaust pipe from vehicle CLEAR from snow or ice! Carbon monoxide is deadly! If stranded run vehicle at intervals getting out to clear exhaust with every few minutes!!!

Anyone that DOESN'T prepare for these events is naive. No one is going to rescue you. Everyone, everywhere should ALWAYS have emergency situation preparation. Just like having a fire extinguisher. Should have 2+ weeks of non parishable food, 2+ weeks of water, a non electric source of heat (body heat and cooking) ... This is just common sense folks. Mylar emergency blankets only cost a few dollars and smaller than a deck of cards. Get a few. Put them in your car with granola bars and bottled water.

The real Great Grand Daddy if all was the Blizzard of 1966. I was 11 years old, and have never seen anything worse. We had snow for 5 days, up to the top of the utility poles.
I feel bad for the people of Buffalo, but Watertown/Jefferson County has been hard hit as well. My daughter and her family are there, and they stayed hunkered down by their wood stove.

Prepare for these events ahead of time.every automobile in America should have a minimum of 3-day bugout bag with survival blanket kits, trauma kits, food, personal hygiene stuff, lithium battery jumper, and a reserve heater. But number one, STAY OF THE ROADS UP NORTH! After this recovery efforts is over, start preparing your go-to bag, kit for your automobile, and, create survival kit for your home! Buying that kerosene heater in the summer is wise! But kerosene five gallons at a time....have as many five gallon jugs full as possible. Same with food that you can heat up and eat quickly. Generator if you can afford it, and cheap electric blankets! Do Not Rely On Gov To Save You! Think "1800"!

Jackson, Mississippi was already under a boil water notice before the storm now it just makes it way worse. It's going to Rain for 2 weeks straight in Cali so that means nasty weather headed to everyone east of us.

Peace and I use to be in the marine corps as a 0811 artillery guy. For the new year and beyond people need to make sure they have a winter survival kit in their trunk. Items such as serious sleeping bag,flare gun and powerful flashlighs,food,water extra cell phone and batteries. A real spare tire and not a donut and a 4 way tool to remove the different type of lugs on your tires. You can't ride around all summer and spring and wait until the last minute by then it is to late. Plus,extra winter gear to put on and leave the car if you have to. Plus real winter shoes or boots. You can't be riding in house shoes and flip flops thinking it does not make a difference.

I dont understand. Fort Drum is 3 hours away from Buffalo. The 10th Mountain Division should have been sent in there to help deal with the storm. One Brigade Combat Team could have made a world of difference and possibly saved lives. They have lots of equipment that is not available to regular first responders. Didn't we learn anything from Katrina.
They have how forgotten how buried they were in 1978 when the Pentagon dispatched a Combat military Engineer unit to help with snow removal and Ft. Drum was buried in the same lake effect storm.

There is equipment up there that is not available to regular first responders. Five to Seven Thousand Soldiers spreading out into Buffalo combined with heavy equipment would make a world of difference and possibly saved lives. Its like we learned nothing from Katrina. We waited so long to deploy the 1st Cav and 82nd to New Orleans in the aftermath.

They make great stoves to cook on, & boil water, if needed. Heavy baking racks on top for just that purpose.

However, The report made it clear that the vast majority of the looters were simply exploiting the storm as an opportunity to steal, that very few were due to desperation of experiencing the storm. 1:20 This is one of the few times I'll accept the term "first responders" referring to the people in uniform because they're probably the first people finding many victims lately. But normally, it's regular folks who are the first to respond to an emergency. Calling uniformed people "first responders" sets a mentality of relying on the government, which it repeatedly proves it's too inept at keeping everyone safe, such as in this storm. The answer would've been for everyone to be prepared and take care of their own needs, and neighbors' needs. BTW, another storm is coming. This is your chance to prepare.

All i know is i saw houses that had fireplaces and none of them were on… nobody uses fireplaces anymore when they know the electricity is going to go out they should have at least a week of firewood ready to go and basic survival skills
