For a second I was convinced that Conan had a really cool contribution to Baseball. Then he rambles on about the players catching fire. And I completely lost it. Good one.
I was out right away when he talked about going to thirst. Silly. But, classic Conan. Definitely wasn’t expecting a serious discussion about new rules of baseballs

Well, the first part of the suggestion doesn't change because of the unrelated additional theatrics of a CGI fire. Being able to run clockwise or counter is not absurd.
I do like the idea of choosing third of first, but that would get complicated, lol.
I like Sona's idea of the high five as players crossed paths.
And it goes without saying that, when they high-five, both players can choose to take over each other's direction.
So if you pass first and then meet your team mate you _could_ then reverse and go past 1 more base to complete your run.
Obviously, you'd then need to recruit players based on if they were sprinters or long distance runners.
I see no flaws with this idea.

asbestos is to discourage players from eating the coin too often. They want to encourage the action of the split ball fielding rule.

And a small team of people to put it into play immediately.
The bases are north, south, east, and west. The mound is surrounded by a moat of fire. You can run either direction but you have to declare your direction of choice to the umpires before the game via email. After each inning, the outfield wall is raised by ten feet. Each team is allowed a spotter to perch on the wall and steal signals but they must only be relayed using American Sign Language or your designated owl.
I mean why not? This is as arbitrary as any set of sportsball rules. 😀

I've watched so many of these back to back. No one makes me laugh like Conan, especially with this dynamic, and I have no idea why. Sometimes they literally just talk about nothing and it cracks me up.
The Savannah Bananas minor league team developed a special version of baseball called bananaball that has lots of great rules like a two-hour time limit, stepping out of the box is an automatic strike, bunting results in an automatic ejection of the batter, no mound visits, batters can steal first base if there’s a wild pitch, batters are out if a fan in the stands catches a foul ball, etc.
I’ve seen a bunch of their tik toks!

That last one is a horribile rule. Foul balls can be fast line drives and have even killed people from hitting them in the head. To have fans actively chasing foul balls, especially if they want their team to win, is dangerous. Mix that with alcohol, lawsuit waiting to happen.

This is the podcast at its best. These 4, not Sirius interviews with wealthy out of touch celebs. Great characters, warm, funny interplay. Eduardo brings a whole other element.

Obviously, for the concept of running in either direction to work, the bases would each have to have two names. If you run counterclockwise, it goes 1-2-3 but If you run clockwise, it goes A-B-C. That means that the infielders would have to be renamed.
The 1st baseman would be called the 1C baseman, the 2nd baseman stays the same, the shortstop is renamed the B baseman, the 3rd baseman becomes 3A baseman, the catcher gets renamed the 4D baseman, and the pitcher is now called Chuck.
I wish they'd post the whole podcast on youtube because I love watching these more than just listening with no video

The players being set on fire problem could be solved if water sprinklers popped up at each base. The players would need to run to the sprinkles to put out the flames. It would motivate them to run faster. MY IDEA: there could be a moment when suddenly all the lights go out unexpectedly, but UV black lights turn on, and the players outfits, the ball, bat, and bases contain glowing neon material. I think the spectators would love it! I also think the BALL should burst into fireworks mid-air after the player hits it.
Except certain sprinklers will randomly put out gasoline rather than water, so players must take note before going near a sprinkler. If they choose unwisely, that’s when the lights go out and everyone watches the spiking flames as the burn intensifies.
@@edjames7954 great idea, that's just a risk the players will have to take. In that case, some other the bases will also be laced with gasoline, so it might burst into flames and set the other players on fire.
@@draum8103 I’m just glad they finally realized they needed to start tweaking the game for its entertainment value to the people. They will start adopting more of these changes the more everyone voices their support for it.
But they should make certain uniforms are fireproof before implementing this. We don’t want any burn victims or death. This isn’t Rome.

@@Tao_Tology Stop exaggerating, no I am not. There is nothing ridiculous about baseball players being set on fire during a game. These are top level athletes, if they can't handle a little burning flames, then they shouldn't be in the sport at all and should play pickleball instead.

Conan’s idea of picking a base running direction is actually very interesting and could make the game much more exciting. MLB should think about it, if they’re willing to change it up
Yeah, but there’s no way they’d be willing. They refused to use instant replay for a long time. They like their traditions.

There's so many flaws in the concept. Not to mention rule changes like that are way too drastic for a sport.

I have totally had the "running the bases in the opposite direction" idea. It's totally arbitrary that they picked the counter-clockwise direction 150+ years ago when they made the rules, could've just as easily been the other direction.
That's just not baseball either. All runners run counter clockwise in tracks for some reason, and that's why it was adopted that way in Baseball too.
Most plays happen at first base and it is easier for a right handed player to throw to first. But, being left handed, I like the idea. Maybe, for starters, run clockwise every other game.
The direction isn’t arbitrary. It’s easier for a right-handed fielder on the left side of the infield to throw to first than a right-handed fielder on the right side of the infield to throw to third.
A right-handed batter also has a direct straightforward route to first base, whereas they have to turn around a quarter to a third to start heading for third.
Since the vast majority of players bat and throw right-handed, the direction of base running makes it easier for both right handed batters and infielders to make plays at the first base, and since by default the majority of base running action is going to be at the first base either way, the current setup favors the easier direction for most players.
I'm assuming that because most people tend to be right-handed, they would usually be facing in that counter-clockwise direction, so it made sense that when they take off towards a base it that way too.

The "batter gets to choose a direction" thing is actually a lot of fun and could be made to work. I think what you'd do is any batter who is up to bat when there is nobody on base would get to choose; if there are already batters on base, the hitters that follow have to match the direction that the first runner chose (no crossing). But the base running direction could be decided at least every side of every inning, maybe even during the innings if the bases clear and a batter gets a hit again.

I had the exact same idea (minus the flames) but anytime the bases are empty, the batter gets to select the base direction after the hit for the offense. This would also eliminate left handed/right handed advantages and disadvantages for pitchers and batters.

I like the pitch clock (who needs 45 minutes of watching a batter step out every pitch), I even like the bigger bases if it increases steal attempts and bunts....I am against the pick off limit - but only mildly, I would like them to do away with the automatic base on balls (free pass) rule as a lot of crazy things happened when with those 4 pitches

I like the pyrotechnic idea. I think it could work if the players wore battery packs (this will provide jobs to the field of ergonomics) that have leads to the batting gloves. If the players crossing each other in the base path can "give each other five" while passing AND connect the leads so there is a welding arc flash, then a half point is given to the team up to bat.
Robots could be a thing with Boston Dynamics. Take them out of militant use and have them play baseball. I think though, with the accuracy of the robots, it's only going to work with balls hit out of the park.

I've been saying for years these need to be new baseball rules: 1) Reduce to 7 innings: 9 is too long. 2) Bat carry: You can carry the bat to the bases, and take the basemen out before they tag you. 3) exploding baseballs: all baseballs have a timer in them and can "ka-boom" at any moment. enough to stun someone. 4) trap door bases: if you get sucked down you're out for rest of the game.

Why do Americans get so hung up about the length of a baseball game when NFL games take longer and NBA games, despite only 48 mins of play take 2.5 hours?
That's a good question/observation. Most of it has to do with the amount of commercials during the games. There's a god-awful amount of them. Plus, Football & Basketball are considered more "fast paced" games" compared to Baseball.
Back when I used to watch Sports, I'd just record a game then start watching it about 1.5 hours after it started. That way I could fast-forward through all the commercials, cutting the viewing time in half.
I have one new rule proposal. The batter can run straight to the 2nd base, but the pitcher can tackle him.

Oh My! Shifting positions would be the biggest problem. Here's my suggestion: First batter in the inning chooses his own base path. This would require a shift by the short stop at least. The problems just multiply from there.

If you had one batter get a hit and run to 3rd, next batter get a hit and run to 1st and if the 3rd batter hits the ball you wouldnt automatically get a double play by throwing it to 2nd base because which ever base the 3rd batter chose to go to (either to 3rd or 1st) would force the runner already on that base to run to 2nd while the other runner on the base that the 3rd batter is not running to, can just stay on that base.
So you would get a force out at 2nd and then the fielder would have to throw to the base the 3rd batter chose to run to get a double play. The remaining runner (on the base the 3rd batter chose not to run to) can just stay. This would make triple plays a lot harder since.
Tactically it creates an interesting scenario that when 2 batters hit singles and get on base you're not having to have everyone forced to run like when there are runners on 1st and 2nd now. Hitting into a triple play sucks and ends the innings right there.

This is similar to my long held idea of introducing 2 live balls into the different balls sports like soccer, basketball, etc.
