You can still be ticketed for the delete and have a good chance of fighting it if your registered state has no law against it. Nj also can’t hold your title and keep you from selling it. A few keys to this is making sure YOUR name is no where on the registration otherwise can be ticketed for failing to update the registration. Make sure your insurance has you added as an authorized driver. The burden of proof that your living in nj with the truck registered elsewhere is on them, don’t admit to anything! • @vincentrobinette1507

The solution is simple...SAVE the deleted parts! you might want to buy another ECU, tune that, and save the stock one. If you ever need to have the truck inspected, just simply put the deleted parts back on, plug in the stock computer, and everything will be in compliance. With the EGR and exhaust train being still new from lack of use, the truck should pass with "flying colors". Once the inspection is done, pull the parts back off, swap out the ECU, and enjoy a truck that actually runs! (avoid "rolling coal", that's a dead giveaway) Save the parts for the next inspection. (or sale of the truck)
The only one concern I would have, is if the ECU records the mileage traveled, and the odometer and computer show different mileage. IF someone notices that, it could "throw up a red flag".

Even as a diesel truck owner myself, I have little sympathy for the guy. I don't like having more regulations but when people can't act responsibly, we risk ending up with more regulations. That said, the EPA could be more reasonable with regard to diesel engines as they are generally the more efficient option when it comes to internal combustion engines.
Put another way, it'd be easier for me to just dump my used motor oil somewhere in my yard - BUT that could have an impact upon the groundwater that everyone else around me relies upon. People just need to be reasonable and considerate - including the EPA.

I mean I'm all for polluting less, and I am certainly not against emissions control equipment in general so long as it actually works and is reliable in the long term with little to no required upkeep. A classic example of an emissions system that did very little asides from rob significant power and fuel economy to simply dilute the exhaust gasses and make the engine appear to be running cleaner according to a tailpipe sniffer is air injection. I am more than well aware of many classic vehicles with that inherently garbage system simply bypassing that pully when replacing an accessory drive belt, and immediately having a significant gain in both power and MPG.
