  • This video gives an introduction to Namibia's experiences with Conservation Agriculture (CA). lt shows small-scale farmers' experiences from Namibia's Northern Communal Areas as they try CA for the very first time during the 2016-17 cropping season. Conservation agriculture is a promising method for adapting agriculture to climate change. CA is based on three principles: no/minimum soil tillage, crop rotation using a variety of crops, and permanent soil cover with vegetation or plant residues. This makes it possible to increase soil fertility and improve water use efficiency. The activities are funded by the German government and the European Union, and are implemented by Namibia's Ministry of Agriculture, Water & Forestry, GlZ, FAO and others.

They mention 3 principles, but then they don't use them. The ripper is the primary tool used, but it does not follow any of the principles. It is also a furrower and not a ripper. Rippers are actually a single blade/hook that cuts through hard pan.
They need to do intercropping, cover crops, tree windrows, and mulching to actually improve yields in the first year without added chemical fertilizer (cow mulch is a natural fertilizer)

Calm down, if it's old land, been used for years, manure alone won't cut it, mulch is a must, don't make it sound optional

Namibia need modern farming. Given the stable political situation, Namibia can produce enough food for the 2,3 milj and there could be a surplus for export.

I'm sorry but a ripper is not consider conservation agriculture. It's okay to use it once where an extremely hard pan exists to own it up. But constantly using it defeats the purpose of building soil organic matter.

Do you even know what a ripper is.? There's a ripper, a rider and plough. A ripper is perfect for conservation agric.

the fertiliser company has done a great job in convincing the farmers to depend on their products.
use of fertiliser will deplete soil further
