After Girard finished in 4th place at Beijing 2008, the Canadian weightlifter fell into a depression. She worked back into shape for London 2012, where she finished in third. But now, after disqualifications due to doping and the reallocation of medals, she is finally awarded the Olympic medals she deserved.

Cheating in any context is unacceptable and when those negatively impacted by it finally get what they deserved it’s simply beautiful

In fact those negatively impacted will NEVER get what they deserved.

You notice the women who were stripped of their medals in that weight class in Beijing and London that gave Christine her '08 bronze and upgraded her from bronze to gold in '12 were former Soviet republics, including Russia. That's why many of the Russian team were not invited to compete in Rio or Peyongchang.

Exactly and their whole track team had to get disqualified and get their medals taken away since the whole track team was found to be doping for russia

Had she won the bronze from the start, her life would have been much easier. But it also might have made her have less drive to propel her to the next olympics to win a medal outright, and then be upgraded to gold. And the fact that she had to train alone, makes that medal that much more special imo. On the other hand she's competing with state sponsored athletes from Russia and China.

china has had very few positive tests compare to how many gold medals they are winning. dont be jealous just because other people are flat out better than you.

@@mxn1948 lmao what does that have anything to do with me? This is about feeling compassion for athletes for athletes who have to WORK 5 days a week, AND train to be an olympian, while athletes in China don't have to work at all through their lives. But hey, if you want to get personal and single out China, for the 99% who don't make it to the world stage, those that you don't see on TV, have very little they can do in life if they don't make it to the olympic team. We only see the top 1% win medals for the country. All the other athletes are screwed for life, with little education, life skills, and work experience. Why the heck would I feel jealous. I made $300,000 USD last year.

To have the olympics not only talk about an underrated sport, but a rarely talked about athlete living in a rarely talked about region of French Canada close to where I live and train is so motivating

So glad for her. She went trhough a hard time not due to few kilos she had failed to lift but due to another athlete's cheating. But in the end it helped her come back stronger and get a medal in London. But she is right, in most of the cases (not all) those who doped are victims of a system (well...Kazakhstan has been stripped of a lot of medals so has Russia and that is not an accident). Hers is a victory of clean sport.

What really pist me off the most that these athletes don't give a dam for doping they have a choice dope or not to dope. They knew what they where doing. To their bodies they wanted that extra Edge that pick me up. Now what's going in their minds for cheating a sport that's tarnished and the people you trusted. ..........???

So that's why Russia was banned from the 2020 Olympics. I wonder why Kazakhstan wasn't banned though? Maybe it was just a one-event thing for them while with Russia, there was a whole operation going on with a lot of their athletes.

Think if Leonardo Da Vinci was interested in competing against others and not in creating or inventing things.
For sure there was stronger people than him at his time, but he did create useful things.
