This is by far the best floorplan I've seen yet, especially the sleeping area that doesn't take up the entire back. I'm 65 and so want to do the vanligr but afraid too and this awesome lady is so inspiring!!! PLEASE do keep checking in with her from time to time so we could see how her journey is going.

GinaStath: Did you notice the VitaMix blender setting on her counter? I suspect she does a lot of fresh smoothies, soups, etc. after all, when you are limited on refrigerator and storage space, you don’t stock up on junk food.

David Haney I'll get the van, get it set up, and who cares how long it takes, do dry runs in my carport...lol, and then start with small round trips...when I feel safe and it feels familiar, I'll say, I'm moving out! And in the mean time I'm ready for any emergency! All ready to go off-grid! I'm going to trade my beautiful vintage el dorado for a high top van! I have my caddy hooked to an engine block heater for the below zero temps here in NE Washington state, so I have a hookup! Need my Walmart washer/ wringer machine...those are better than full size Maytags machines and the clothes are wrung practically dry! Have my convection toaster oven, vitamix...I'm a vegan, but i will take my lovely time... I'm also a pro singer, musician w/ karaoke now, so I can do gigs, cut hair, bake organic bread with my kitchen-aid w/ dough hook..people ask for it! My time will be enjoyable, not boring! Serious! And I'm 67 too!
David Haney Right on!!! I hope your solar setup went well? I can't wait until I'm out there! I have every intention of living the van life. I just have to be patient. Taking care of in-laws at present and I love them dearly so it's just on hold for a while. We will be purchasing a van soon and will begin converting soon. Also plan to buy a Utility trailer and convert it as well. We have 2 large dogs and 2 cats and my husband snores like a bear, so we have to have some space between us when we are sleeping or I would get no sleep! LOL! Also have thought about the fact that if our van should need repairs and possibly have to go into a shop for it, we don't want our home to be in the shop with it, so the utility trailer is necessary as far as we are concerned. Just out of curiosity, how much solar are you installing and what will you be running off of it? Thanks!

Hey embrace those fears, become their master. All have some fears but not all face them head on and truly live! I promise if you just take one fear at a time, confront it, and pass through it no matter how you feel while doing so you will see once it is done how truly powerful and courageous you are. Being brave doesn't mean you don't have any fears. Being brave is feeling scared yet not letting it paralyze you.You push through until you are on the other side. You can do it! Yes it's a lot easier than people think , I was in my Navigator with my cat 6months so easy to blend in anywhere really. I had to have a few brain surgeries so I'm in a friend's place and I'm going get rid of 54yrs of "Stuff" that society teaches us to have 🙄 and upgrade to a van 😍.

That may be true, but it doesn’t address the problem is GREED from banks/government, etc. every person deserves to ave a HOME they can afford WITH sufficient space. These little homes are great, and while they are somewhat sufficient, it doesn’t work for all. The issue still remains- housing costs (among other necessities of life) are too high. It’s born of greed. It needs to be stopped.
@@sonofhibbs4425 That is not the point in Ruth's case. She can afford her old place but she doesn't want to be stuck in an oversized place. She wants to travel and bring her home with her. "Sufficient" is relative. I used to think my 550 sq. ft apartment was too small, now I think it's too big. Too much time spent for cleaning.

I own a 3 bedroom, 1600 sq ft on 3/4 acre and I am getting so tired of the upkeep. I plan to sell it in two years and I will go RV. I need a van with a toilet and shower. I love her set up, she is immaculate, everything in its place. I have never seen a van that was so clean. She is a hoot, love her personality. I hope she lives a long life able to drive around the country golfing. I loved this video!!!
Deb, there is a young man on UA-cam who created a very innovative shower stall. He put a fixed toilet on a shower pan with wooden mat. But the shower head, the square curtain rod and the shower curtain all tucked back up into the ceiling when not in use. The toilet sat under the foldable bed. So you folded the bed back, dropped the shower rod, and you had a mini bath on the same footprint as bed. Genius. Check this out, so you don't compromise space in your van.

A lot of the different rigs I’ve seen reviewed they were filthy and disorganized I was getting a little discouraged but after seeing this setup and how neat and organized her rig is, I want to do this even more. I’m a 71 year male and was a little intimidated to live this way, but after watching Ruth, and how fearless she is (follow your gut) Renting a van first is a stroke of genius.
There are literally hundreds of videos out there who’s vans aren’t “filthy”
I agree with you about disorganized and filthy vans and cars, but one homeless woman in Orange County said "This is all the space I have in this car and so to me, keeping it clean and tidy gives me a sense of calm and control," I lived in my VW bug for a yr back in '80-'81 and I felt the same way then. I did rent the smallest locker I could at a storage, so my Bug didn't look "loaded."
As rents and greedy landlords and banks demand way too much smart people will move towards alternatives and this life can be neat and tidy and very comfortable.

If you run into a greedy landlord, don't rent from them. If nobody rents from them they'll have to lower their rent. Plain and simple. It's all about supply and demand. Better yet, set an example, by a place and rent it out at a low rate. Maybe everyone will follow your lead, if not buy a second place and do the same thing until you can't afford to pay off your mortgages.
I live in my van too! She is so right! The feeling of freedom is incredible. Being able to go anywhere, at any moment, without having to pack - because you have everything with you, at all times! Same Van as mine too! Promaster is the way to go! I get 25mpg, can park anywhere a car can park, and can overnight anywhere (stealth). My van looks like a people carrier from the outside - except it isn't. It has windows all the way around. They are tinted so that from the outside you cannot see in. I predict that in the future, many people will live this way. FREEDOM! TRAVEL! ADVENTURE!

Never heard of promaster down here in OZ but Il look them up. Tinted windows are a good idea. I love the curtains & insulating properties Ruth had made for her van.
Is 25mpg good? We've gone European for some crazy reason & use litres & metres & I 'still'dont like it, after 30 something years lol. But we say 10km to the Litre or what ever... Il have to try & convert it to figure it out..

Stay active, and eat well, no red meat
Exercise, take supplements, and eat moderate amounts of red meat, but don't go all veg. You need the iron, amino acids, etc from meat and fish. Mostly find a passion.

JJ, No meat for 45 years...healthy life style, eat home grown ferments, etc., 69 yo and just developed heart issue. We can’t out run our genetics; we can lessen its impact though.

I’m not even done with this video and I’m in love with Ruth! When she said “someday I’ll get old….” I knew she was the real deal! And her magnet? Perfect! I’m 53 and have been watching SO MANY of these videos. I want to do this so badly, but thought it was just too late for me to start a new adventure. Clearly that is not the case! As far as security I would recommend getting a can of bear spray. Keep one in my van at all times. It is inexpensive. Legal in all states. And if needed very effective. I also installed dead bolt locks on the front and side doors. With an exterior van security lock on the back door. Not out of concern for my van or possessions in it. Do not want anyone breaking in and harming or taking my dog when he is in the van by himself. As a combat veteran my first concern is security. Not out of fear but out of knowing what deplorable actions our fellow human beings are capable of. Do not bring this up to scare anyone. Just that even if you never need these things, which in all likelihood you will not, if ever do need them you will be glad you had them. That out of the way, beautiful van build. Every aspect of the build is so well thought through. Ruth is an amazing young woman. Impressed with her organizational skills. Would love to acquire some. But having lived 68 years, pretty sure there would be no hope for such a miracle? Fantastic presentation. Thanks.
Not legal in all cities, tho. And states have defined use clauses. If you're camping fine for bears, but if you use it on someone while walking down the block than you run the risk of being charge with assault with a weapon.

@@babbalouie3166 that's my point. you can't have bear spray in most cities and states for "strictly" self-defense in general or against other people. Small 2.5 oz. pepper spray, yes. But bear spray is only for use with bears in (arguable) situations and locations where it is reasonable to assume a bear could be. Otherwise, just possession of it could get you time. if you keep it in your car, purse or office desk drawer and find yourself being robbed and pull it out to defend yourself...that's illegal because you had it for use where it is not reasonable to assume a bear will be (unless you live in rural Alaska or a state forest). You might not be charged if the prosecutor decides not to pursue it because an attack was overwhelmingly obvious, but it is his choice and even if he doesn't, the attacker could still sue you for damages. if there is an argument about whether there was an attack (no witnesses) or your perception of an attack (racism, provable bias, you're a former (thus trigger happy) victim, or known psychological issues...) you will find yourself doing up to 8 years for assault with a weapon. Happened to a relative of mine with bearspray in her car "emergency preparedness" kit. She got 3 years for spraying a drunk guy coming on to her aggressively. He denied it and witnesses "perceived" that he wasn't all that bad to get sprayed. bear spray is worse than regular pepperspray. Quantity of the "agent" is a factor and bear spray comes in large bottles and can blind a person or burn large areas of skin which can then get infected and kill the person.
Doesn't really matter for this lady anyway. People don't really break into occupied vans without a gun this days. Before she could get some spray out or aim it correctly, she would be dead. Her best options are to have good locks, pick a good location to park, use the travel buddy method with another van dweller, have a cell phone to call for help, have humility to beg for her life, and good physical fitness to flee the scene. If she is really smart, she would keep some condoms handy along with cold beer and vial of a knock out drug if things go really south .

I’m 73 now and in the process of freeing my life: live in a 20-26 ft travel trailer after culling Dow a lifetime of stuff including my house. Already bought a used F-150 pickup to haul my future home. At times I get doubts because of my age, but you and other women who have already begun your freedom life spur me on. I am determined! Hope to be ready to take off and hit the road next year. I really love your van and all the details for efficient, attractive, and homey well-lit living and travel!

Good for you, I looked at the IROK and I would much rather a Ford Transit than a Dodge Ram for reliability. Also, with everything combined for around $100K, I don't see the value at all in ANY of these (manufactured) class B's.

I must have watched dozens of these van videos, and I've never seen another one where the owner included space for files and office stuff. This is a beautiful, really personally-tailored vehicle, and Ruth is a gem.

Ohmygoodness!!! I love Ruth! I think this is one of the most well thought out van designs I've seen - including the Mercedes... I think she should should be a consultant 😃 I am 62, and just had a hip replacement. During my recovery I lived downstairs in my living room and discovered the same thing Ruth did...that I lived in like 800 sqft (lv, dr, bthrm, kitchen). I have been downsizing ever since my surgery... I am now ready to make the leap! Ty Ruth!!!

I love Ruth’s van so much! It is so well thought out, organised. Everything from the color schemes to the design, usability etc is perfect in my opinion! Ruth can make a living designing custom live in van! She is so creative, practical.
She is absolutely correct in SO many ways. A van (Class B) is the way to go. Small...easy to drive...COMFORTABLE to drive...low profile. I also like her "white water" setup and portapottie. No worries about "winterizing" and water freezing in cold weather (even though she lives in the van full time and keeps the heat on). I see this van but its almost too good to believe. HOW in the WORLD she thought all this stuff through to such perfection is beyond belief!
This is the first "homemade" van I've seen that actually looks as good as those $80k class B RVs. Well done Ruth!
Yes, I think she bought new. I'm almost positive this van costs as much as an already made one, but whatever, it's beautiful.
But not putting in a basic wet bath is a mistake. She said she didn't want to deal with black water but you can have a bath for emergencies.
@@user-rl4rc8tc2y You can get a rig that you can shower in. May have to add a few hooks in the ceiling. It is a "foot tub" (or something comparable), a shower curtain, and an attachable spray (to the water supply). You hang the curtain on the hooks, making sure the bottom is in the "foot tub", undress, step into the tub, rinse, soap up, rinse again. (Probably could do it with just two buckets of water, as well. Dry off. I have not figured out yet how you dry the shower curtain unless you have a clothesline.
@@j.harkleroad3347 I like your idea, and it sparked me thinkIng about those five-gallon solar shower "bags". I'm sure there's a way to figure out how to use one indoors without too much lifting. (lifting 40# would be a problem for me) Perhaps create an indoor shower area with a slide-out shelf to the outside. You could place the solar shower bag on the shelf, slide it out; then slide it back in when it's heated. I bet you could even rig up some type of pulley system to hoist the bag into place. I'm planning to take on the van life within the next couple of years. I have a back problem and will be 61 next month, so I'm always thinking about ways to make the adventure work within my limitations. I can't wait for the day I can spread my wings and fly!!

I hope you do get to have a great adventure. I'm 75. Not sure about it. I would like to be able to park somewhere near one of my children for a month or two at the time. I think I would prefer having a good friend go with me on a real adventure, but Ruth's van does not have that ability. But I love how streamline hers is. I think it may be very expensive though. I just bought an exploratory van to figure out if I want to do this lifestyle. Do watch other videos on the bad things of van life. She is still a young'un at 72. I'm headed toward 75. We have to keep healthy to do this and she looks healthy. Health definitely becomes prime concern when you get older.

When my grandmother was 80 years old, she never referred to herself as an old person. She cooked, cleaned and took care of her son who had special needs. She taught me a lot about being sensitive to people's needs not to be called old or senior citizens.

my husband and I traveled in rv for 3 years with 2 cats and a dog. met so many others along the way and workkamped in wonderful places. glad we did it at younger age, as he is now deceased. Enjoy the travel, the people you will meet along the way. Flying Js are great truck stops for their clean, large shower facilities.
