Hey Cruiseman, I'm glad you did this blog, I think I emailed you about this a few months back. My wife and I did a two day trip last weekend, about 600 miles. This was kind of our test run for our two week summer trip. We've got about 4,000 miles on our 2019 DCT. I'm very impressed with the fuel economy and associated range I'm getting two up burning California's horrible fuel blend. I'm easily seeing 240 miles per tank. Now, our typical plan is to ride two hours then break for 10-15 minutes. That pattern just makes our touring day more enjoyable and recovery each night quick. So I don't need 240 miles of range anyway. Also, we learned that with the addition of a trunk rack bag, we can easily do a two week trip without a trailer. We use vacuum bags for our clothes. This increases capacity probably by 20-30%.
I wouldn't have purchased the prior generation Goldwing due to stigma. Yeah, that's not fair but I couldn't see myself in my 40's riding that bike. But this generation of Goldwing seems as though it will work just fine.

My 2018 Tour DCT has averaged 258 miles per fill up (“small” 5.5 gallon tank). My 6.5 gallon tank on the 2014 Valkyrie that I rode for 19 months averaged 259 miles per fill up. I am very happy with my mileage.

    • @LTVoyager

You must be running on fumes when you fill up. If you even have 0.5 gallon left, that would require 52 MPG and I really don’t believe you can achieve that unless you ride like a gramma and never exceed 55 MPH. Even if you ran out the full 5.5 gallons, that would require getting nearly 47 MPG, which is pretty hard to do as an average.

Chris, Took my first real ride last weekend over Memorial Day on my 2019 DTC. My wife and I went to southwest Colorado and road several mountain passes, Colbank, Molas, Red Mountain and Lizard Head on our trip. Since this was my first real ride to check mileage I felt like the mountains would be a good test, especially since these are all around 10K', so lots of up and down. I was very pleased with the average for the whole trip when I got 49+ mpg. My 2009 GW was always around 42 mpg when we were loaded and two up, so I was glad to see that I could get the same range with the smaller tank. This was all done on gasoline that was 10% ethanol, so my next test I will do with non-ethanol gas, which should improve the mpg even more, as well as the fact that I now have 1100 miles on this new one and it should have settled in by now. So far I love the bike and the electronics, I'm still unhappy with Honda for taking away 1/3rd of the storage capacity. I did install the Corbin trunk lid and was pleased with what it did for the trunk capacity.

Owned a 1998 Aspencade and when I retired I moved up 22 years to the a new 2019. Needless to say it was like going from a Ford LTD to a Porsche. The electronics were obviously not the same, as my 98 had none. But it did have an air compressor.(LOL). Got about 35 to 36 MPG my ole gal and in the 40's on the new gal. The DCT was a hell of a change, and in some respects I do miss the clutch (especially when practicing slow turn maneuvers). The new GW is a bugger trying to maneuver with no friction zone. Did a 1700 mile tour last fall and found the new bike to be what I call spunky. Do not, do not daydream on the new bike it has a mind of it's own where the old gal seemed to track straight an true. So mindfulness has a new meaning for me on the 19. I found the seat on the new bike very firm which that caused more stops and "might as well top her off" mentality. Otherwise, I'm planning a Florida, Vancouver, New Brunswick, Florid four corners jaunt. Yep retired and it is number one on my bucket list. Keep up the good work Chris, glad to hear you are. Covit19 free.

Congratulations on working on slow speed maneuvers! On the DCT, a little rear brake pressure will give you a sensation like a friction zone.

I've got 23K miles on my 2019 DCT (bought it 8/1/19) - local and highway - and keep close track of my mileage...my running average over the last 50 fill-ups has been 44 MPG...and that includes plenty of miles at 70+ MPH.
When I go in for the 24K service and new tires next week, I am having Centramatic balancers installed and am very interested to see if that improves mileage (as well as tire life)

    • @carvama1

@@carvama1 No, I got 15K out of the first set, but only about 8 on this second set. I believe the difference is because I had been doing a lot of downshifting (which I was told the DCT can handle easily) - but that jerky-DCT response probably led to more wear and tear on the rubber.

@@Dundertaker1 Thanks for the head's up - I will say that the 500 or so miles I've done after having the Centramatics installed have been much smoother - not only as felt in the handlebars but also as I viewed the tops of the two fork connections visible behind the windshield - where they used to jitter up and down in an almost mesmerizing way, now they remain glass smoothand steady as I ride down the (same) roads at the same speeds (40-70MPH).

Never found this a big deal, am amazed at the consumption though. I'm doing about 46.7 mpg average after 19.000 miles on back-roads and I think that's quite good! I use the bike for touring, average speeds during my trips is around 30-35 mph. Still extremely happy with the DCT!

  • @stevesalins7561

The question on the smaller gas tank and range is determined by riding style, condition of the bike, and weight of the driver. The last two weekends I have driven almost 300 miles on either the Saturday or Sunday. Two weeks ago I averaged 56 mpg and last weekend it was 59 mpg. That is a 300 mile range. The 2018 Goldwing loves high altitude and heat. I am in Colorado and I don't drive like a grandma.

    • @chadgruver4423
      @chadgruver4423 4 роки тому

Steve, I've found with all my prior bikes my fuel economy improves dramatically when I'm in Colorado. I live in California and our fuel blend is terrible. I've never been able to confirm but it seems like the combination of the Colorado summer fuel blend and the altitude combined with such lean requirements for California C.A.R.B, make the bike very happy at Colorado. Do you get poorer economy when you leave the state?

I got tested with the nasal swab. Was told I was negative but there are false negatives. I was ordered to stay home ten days. Honda may consider moving the air box where it would be easier to service and put a larger fuel tank in it's place.

I bought my 2018 in early May 2018. Drove it to Wing Ding pulling a trailer with a group of 10 other bikes. I averaged 55 mpg on the trip. Every time we stopped for gas I put about 2.5 gallons and everyone else was putting 4+ gallons with their older 1800's. I still average 55 mph on the highway and 48 mph combined city/highway. I love my bike and am glad I brought a 2018 Goldwing 1800 DCT tour. I generally drive 250 miles and still have gas in the tank.

I’m very content with the range on my DCT. Previously, I had a Victory High Ball with the same size gas tank as my DCT but the range was only about 150 miles. I’m now averaging over 200 miles traveling to and from work and when I’m taking a longer trip, I need to stop every few hours to stretch my legs and give my body a break. If my gas tank was any larger, I would still stop after a few hours and fill up my tank. Like I’ve stated many times before, this Goldwing is the best motorcycle I’ve ever owned.

I still have the duffle bag that I use for storage and tie it down on my pillion or trunk rack. No worries 👍

I like taking breaks, even if they’re just a few minutes. I won’t go too much over an hour without a stop if I’m solo or leading. Just a little stretching and get off my stock seat for a bit helps me to continue on comfortably. The fuel range is fine for me.

I thrilled with the fuel mileage with my 6-speed 2018. I've went farther on a tank of fuel with this 2018 than I seen with my 2003. I've seen 286 miles on a tank of fuel...250 miles on a tank is easy to do with this bike...have seen 50 mpg pulling my Bushtec on some legs of the Blue Ridge Parkway...my 2003 pulling the same Bushtec on the same route was 40 mpg. I also find my 2018 every bit as comfortable as my 2003 was on long distance rides...both machines had Wingsoft seats..but I got to say this 2018 is so much nicer to ride in hot weather.

Fuel range was not a big deal for me. I use my bike primarily for commuting from home to work with only 2 or 3 long trips a year. I average 48+ mpg (266 miles per tank) riding in Tour Mode 95% of the time on State Routes and back roads. I have taken one 7 day trip on my 2018 with the wife and we were able to pack everything we needed. I do fine you have to think about packing more with the new bike. I brought a set of liners made for the 2018 DCT Tour to go into the bags and taught my wife to roll her clothes to get more in the bags.

Yes I would prefer an extra gallon, and I thought it was going to be a big deal, but after getting the 2018 and riding it a few times I have found it makes little difference. If you are riding an 8 hour day you stop one extra time for gas...no big deal. I stop more often than that anyway. Just wish that they had put that one gallon of space in the top trunk. Hey Cruiseman; different topic, but I’d like to see a short utube on what tools you like to pack along for a weekend ride.

I was one of those people who considered and compared the 2020 BMW 1600 with the 2020 Honda Gold Wing Tour Airbag DCT. It is certainly true that the BMW has a larger fuel capacity. However, I found the following cons about the BMW: 1. The then current recall, regarding the transmission possibly causing double engagement of 2 gears and/or damage of transmission parts. 2. It has an outdated audio/navigation cluster. 3. No Airbag option. 4. No DCT option, although you did not always have to use the clutch to shift. So, when I tried to balance all those cons with the smaller fuel tank capacity, it was a no-brained for me - Go with the Gold Wing.

I had a lot of trepidation over the gas tank on the 2018 Goldwing & was considering a BMW, but kept hearing people claiming they got 50 mpg. This fact, plus the fact that you can't get a CB on a BMW, was the determining factors for me. It turns out that I routinely get 220 to 260 miles per tank, & 45 to 50+ mpg, so I'm slowly getting over "fuel anxiety." I've had the bike for approximately 10 months & have taken only one long trip & a lot of 200 mile day rides, but the luggage issue is still a concern, as I like to bring an armored jacket, rain gear, a bike cover, tools, & first aid equipment, so it's a little difficult to pack, & a lot of things that were in my 2003 Goldwing are sitting in storage boxes. All things considered, I love this bike, & will ride it till I can't ride anymore!

Well I went from a 1500 carbureted Valkyrie they got about 32 mi to the gallon with a 5.5 gallon tank. My range to reserve was about 118 to 125 mi depending on the road conditions. I could stretch it out to 150 mi on long trips. So going to the Goldwing and getting 250 mi to a tank I'm happy as a clam. from my house to a place in Pennsylvania is about 75 to 78 miles and I would have to fill up to get home to make a round trip. I no longer have to do that and no have to worry about gas stations being open

The small fuel capacity is one of two reasons that I have not bought a Gold Wing. The other is luggage capacity as I travel long distance almost always with my wife. Honda has addressed this somewhat now with the larger top case, but the side cases still need the Corbin lids to be acceptable. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any easy away to remedy the too small fuel tank.

Cruiseman, I get over 40 pmg... and yes the range on a tank was a consideration... but since I'm a disabled Vet I need to stop about every hundred miles or so and stretch, flex, jiggle... and I'm old... so I get fuel and stretch and pee every hundred miles or so. On long trips (where there aren't any gas stations for 200 miles here in the SW) I take a gallon jug with me. I plan my trips so that the furthest I go is 225 mile between fills. So far it's worked out.

I was a long time Honda rider I am thinking I had over 10 of them. CB, CL,XR,VALKYRIE, VTX and Wings. I remember touring on my VTX and could only get about 130 miles per tank. I think it aggravates the people I rode with more then myself. Well I bought a BMW 1600 K Bagger this year. Just to try something different . What drew me was the esthetics , hp, 7 gal fuel tank ( and probably a couple of videos and reviews where it was deemed the winner) it took more then a larger fuel tank but it also was a plus when totaling up a higher score when comparing Honda,H-D, Indian and Yamaha.

When I do a long tour, I usually ride for 100 miles, take a water break, then ride another 100 miles and take a fuel and water break. This makes the trip a little more relaxing for the two of us. However, we have made runs at times of the complete fuel tank and getting in around 225 miles before a fuel break. The smaller tank but getting the same distance is not really a problem. I just don't know about the cost of the new bike and like you said, it really isn't a long range touring bike anymore. May just move up to a 2016 or 2017.

My 2018 Tour DCT gets about 10 mpg better mileage than my 2005 GL1800 did. I can still go around 210 miles before the light comes on. I am still getting the same distance out of a tank, because I am getting better mileage. If I am on a long trip, I have to stop every 100 - 150 miles for a break anyways. So as far as I am concerned the distance is the same as the older Goldwings, so I don't complain about the 1 gallon less sized tank. Oh, and traffic, they drive like that here in California like that. I've had people pass me on a single lane road, (one lane in each direction) on the right shoulder because I was only doing 10 mph over the speed limit. Without a doubt the old generation pre 2018 GW are better for touring and storage. That is what stopped me from buying when I was looking in 2019.

Honda is not the only one playing the "let's make the tank smaller for a lower wet weight" game. Just about every manufacture does this and it's maddening while searching for a new motorcycle. A bike like this Goldwing, I'd like to see a 300 mi range minimum. 5.5 gallons is not enough for me to buy a Goldwing. 6.5 to 7 and I'd go buy a Goldwing today. A motorcycle I really like the new Triumph Rocket 3 GT, but that thing has a very small tank and a sub-200 mile range that is just not suitable for me. Sadly, many motorcycles have tanks too small, or too large. Few have the sweet spot which IMO is 6 gallons.

I had a ‘13 F6B before I purchased an ‘18 Goldwing tour so the decreased storage capacity wasn’t an issue at the time. I am interested to find out if this is the first tire change for Bob (23k miles)? I was looking at those centramatic balancers as well

I am a IBA member and I don’t care about the tank size as long as it’s at least 200 miles range. At that point I need to get off the bike anyway. Would I like an extra gallon or two? Sure but at what cost??

I’m not sure if it’s the quality of fuel I get here in San Diego California or something with the bike. But the only time I got over 42 miles per gallon on my 2018 tour DCT is on back roads doing no more than 65 mph. It only happened once where I got 53 mpg. I constantly hear people saying they get 45-55 mpg on their 18 DCT tours, but I personally only get 38-40, regardless if I’m commuting or traveling on the highway. As for aftermarket accessories that could possibly affect the aerodynamics of the bike, I have the tall F4 wind screen, and Honda upper and lower air deflectors. 🤷‍♂️
In one of the comments someone stated they pull a bunkhouse camper and still get 45 mpg! HOW?🤔 starting to wonder if I should bring the bike in to have it looked at for the fuel mapping.

A lot of it has to do with the elevation. We are at about 600 ft. above sea level here in Dallas. When I ride in the mountains, or at 1,500 ft. or above, mileage starts to skyrocket.

The 5.5 gallon tank is a deal breaker for me. I ride a lot in the Southwest where there are fewer gas stations. The 2012-2016 range is barely acceptable for a touring bike. I’m 6’5 and broad shouldered so I’m a huge wind-load and bikes don’t get the claimed mileage. I personally doubt that with me riding the streamlined 2018 will be any more streamlined then my 2013. Plus I already added aftermarket electric windscreen and Bluetooth so I do t see any real advantages except for DCT. I would have bought one if the tank was equal size or larger than the 2016

I’ve never owned a bike that didn’t average about 250 a tank so it’s not a deal breaker for me. My next bike will be based off weather protection, storage capacity and comfort. Trying to wait it out for the 50th anniversary wing for my 50th birthday 😂😂😂

Fuel consumption is not too much a problem for me. Like you, I drive 2 hours and I have to stop to relax my legs. One of the problems that really irritates me is to refuel. Gasoline splashing because the filler neck is too long and there is no ventilation to allow air to escape. I thought of making a hole in the top of the white tube but I do not know how the interior of the tank is constructed and the risk of piercing something else. I could also put a small U-shaped tube inside which would allow the air to exit without making bubbles and splashes, but the problem is to keep it there. Do you have a solution to this unpleasant manufacturing defect?

Honda was desperate to have one model under 800 pounds, which they just barely did.
They also learned that very few owners were taking multi week trips, most were not doing more than weekends.

If they focused on weight, why is the Wing still 80 lbs or so heavier than the K1600 that has 1.5 gallon greater fuel capacity? I could see this being true if the Wing was lighter than the K1600.
And the range isn’t just about when you have to stop and stretch, it is also about fuel availability. On my ride to Alaska, I had one time where even my 6.2 gallon BMW tank was on the short side and that is what a 1200 cc bike that gets better mileage than the Wing.

  • @chris4853

So if your getting 43.9 miles/gal (241 miles per tank)for in town driving then what’s your highway mpg? I agree with you, after 200/300 miles of riding I would want to stop and stretch my legs, so that being said it definitely would not be a deal breaker for me!

200 miles is about al I get on my 17 goldwing. It gets about 35 to 36 but when I am cruising it's always running about 3400 rpm. And I do wind it up a bit through gears. Not sure what it would do if I kept it below 3000. I do think my 02 wing got better mileage. What was the range on your 12 wing you had.

    • @cruisemansgarage

Yes sir I drive a little faster in a 70 speed limit I will run 78. In 75 speed limit I drive 82 and on the toll road between Seguin and Austin its 85 so I run 90 on it. I like to keep the traffic behind me still hard to do cause most is going faster. My last ride from Galveston the rador hit me at 120 and I was on the brakes hard before he seen me. But he let us go. He Made some good points because that would have been a jail trip. And if I had your bike I would only run it in sport mode unless it's raining then I would be in rain mode. The reason I didn't get a 18 it's a sport touring bike with out the sport. I would have to go with a Kawasaki concours. Some the wing and I would guess 48 miles to the gallon. But the 18 is a pretty and it will scoot on down the road. I did set on a 18 but it felt different. The wife didn't care for the sit armrest she could not get comfortable.

5 and half gallon tank I would suggest is more than ample for most people, certainly for me in the UK. The Iron butt riders add an extra gas tank. The BMW owner looking to buy a Wing does he only ride with BMW owners? I ride with lots of friends and we all have different bikes and need to fuel up at different times it has never been an issue for any of us to stop for a couple of minutes for a friend to fuel up. In any case we never leave it until we are nearly empty before looking for gas. It seems to me be a really pointless and poor excuse to base any decision on if 5 and half gallon tank isn't large enough for you. just ridiculous IMO

Couldn't agree more , my old K 1600 GT could go further then I wanted too . At 56 I find I need the breaks more then the bike needed gas .
Just bought a 2018 Wing , 5.5.gallon is more then enough gas . I'm getting in the mid 40's for mpg . Great bike.

Well, not all that impressed. My 2002 would take me 220 miles per tank while touring provided I took it easy. So now on my 2019 I barely got 200 is a real bummer. Now in all fareness I was in tour mode not ‘Econ’ so I may have a better opinion there after. Has anyone seen a lack of power in ‘Econ’ mode?

Even in a car, I've got to stop every 2 hours for a stretch and to walk. It isn't a deal killer to me owning a touring machine that needs to stop for gas every 220 miles.

Honda dropped the ball on this one. Two things have kept be from updating to new model, smaller gas tank and storage. Honda could have built best touring bike made but chose to make bike with less range and storage than BMW or Harley. I love the ride and handling of 2018+ models and DCT but does anyone in Honda r&d know anything about touring? Need another model of Goldwing--Goldwing Touring Long Distance (LD) with 300 miles of range, just change lids for more storage, larger seat and windshield and add adaptive cruise control. Market as best long distance tourer made and watch them sell!
