21. A Look back Over 2023.

- The past year has flown by it seems like only yesterday that I was travelling around Morocco thinking about a change in lifestyle and considering a life afloat.
After returning to the UK it didn’t take long for things to start moving forward and before long I was the owner of a 46ft narrowboat and moving aboard. Having settled in and sold my camper van the remainder of 2023 saw me cruise parts of the Grand Union, North Oxford, Coventry, and Trent and Mersey Canals.
Looking back do I think I made the right decision and has it been successful? In this vlog, I try to explain my thought process and whether at the end of the day, it has all worked out or not. I hope you find it interesting.

Well done Alan. You seem to have made a very seamless transition from van to boat. I'm really glad it's worked out for you. Certainly a lot of it is to do with your 'can do' attitude to life that has helped you carry it through. Here's to many more years of cruising. All the very best!

I’m so glad you are enjoying your travels. I’ve been a continual cruiser for almost 20yrs but currently taking a break on permanent moorings, getting back in the swing of things hopefully in the next couple of months. Boats are like houses, you immediately know if it’s the one for you. My boat was also built in 1988 (better steel in those days) and I love her to bits. Bit nervous about being on my own now & not so agile as I used to be but the exercise will do me good 😂🦆💕

I'm an Eastmidlander born and bred, but I have to admit that the canals on the west side of the country are all so beautiful. The Macclesfield, the Shroppie, the Llangollen (with the towering aqueduct), the Staffs & Worcs - all stunning. I've heard that the Peak Forest has a few maintenence issues, don't know how they've progressed at the moment.
I’m certainly looking forward to seeing that part of the network. It will probably be early spring when I head north and west so hopefully most of the maintenance works will be finished. 🤞🤞👍
Me and Les were just saying we hadn't seen a video for a while and wondered if you was OK. Always seems odd to see the van on here! Hope you are well x
