Be the change you wish to see in the world! You ARE so gentle in your education of sustainability and veganism. You practice what you preach. It’s beautiful. If we alienate those who are unlike us, we lose the ability to learn from each other! I appreciate you and your lessons/teachings whole heartedly 🤍

Not making one's own skincare is a BIG ONE for me. THANK YOU for being upfront about this. I* Am* NOT* a* Cosmetic* Chemist*!!! Let the pros do their job and trust companies that can give us a product that's sustainable and fairtrade. I've learned that supporting these companies through voting with my dollar, I create a demand, making more mainstream companies hopefully catch on and follow suit. The company Ethique is my hero.

When I first became a vegan, I was very narrow minded. Everything was right or wrong. Now, almost 20 years later, I am kinder to myself and others. No one is perfect and doing the best one can with the knowledge one has is all that matters. People and friends are more important than ideology. We can’t be kind to animals and then hateful or judgemental to people. That doesn’t make any sense and still harms living beings. I accept people where they’re at in their journey and give myself the same grace as well. ❤️

I'm slowly stepping to veganism, but my teenage child is eating meat, and this is the most powerful lesson for me, accept others choices..I start to combine the two different ways of living in one family...what I had found, it's silicone bags for meat, when I'm making shopping for him...I'm still not a vegan, but I'm learning every day, and finding recapies which are tasty for me and are healthy 😋

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK! I wish more people talked about how dangerous it is to forgo traditional oral hygiene products, I used a "natural" toothpaste for about a year and went from having no cavities and a clean dental record to needing a root canal, and I am so sure that's why :(

"Labels really suck" - my exact thoughts!!! I don't eat meat and I rarely eat fish and dairy, but I don't label this as such. I am simply eating plant-based as much as I can, and Veganuary has given me that massive boost too. I know my family have been positively intrigued by my food choices, but they have kept asking me 'so what are you, then?'. Even the Veganuary survey limited their options to 'vegan' 'vegetarian' 'pescetarian' etc. I had to put 'pescetarian' but I don't feel that is reflective of my diet, because it is very rare that I do eat fish and dairy now. In comparison, you don't label one's efforts on energy-saving or what kind of transport they use to commute or other forms of sustainability, so why always do it with food? I clap and raise my hands at everything you say, you just hit the nail on the head every time! Thank you for this

This is honestly such a nice approach to living more sustainable! I am a vegetarian for like 9 years now and tried to eat vegan so many times in my teenage years but had an eating disorder as well.. it really had a bad impact on me to focus on my diet even more than i already was doing anyways. I hated myself for failing again and again (my record of eating vegan was 3 months i think). Now I'm 21 and over time I've learned that my #1 priority has to be my physical and mental(!) well being. I overcame bulimia and just try to do what i can by having a lot of vegan meals and not any other dairy products than cheese (my biggest guilty pleasure lol). I'm not perfect but newflash: no one is!
So if anyone is reading this, don't be hard on yourself for not being this 'perfect' version of yourself that you think you have to be, cause your happiness is the most important thing and imperfectness i HUMAN! ❤️
And Immy, i love how youre not making people like me feel like theyre just not trying enough or judging them!

If I had gone vegan 10 years ago it would have just triggered my eating disorder and I wouldn't have stuck with it anyway. You have to be in the right mindset when you are prone to eating disorders. Now I am a vegan and it is a really positive thing for me. No worries about restricting or guilt or anything. That wouldn't of happened if I tried to force myself before. It will happen in time. Sending love and support.

i think DIY skincare is fine when it's easy, which for me is when it's just buy one raw ingredient and use it, eg aloe vera, oils (argan oil, shea butter, rosa mosqueta oil, burriti oil), rose water, etc is very easy and safe
i learned to buy ugly water bottles, as all the pretty painted ones get scratched etc, but ugly 'brushed steel' just carries on looking like just that however many dents you put in it. And don't bother buy any for other people, they never use it

This is a serious dose of humility 🙏 we should all live by this example.
I find very difficult sometimes, chosing between going to the supermarket BUT buying organic stuff in there, or eating vegan BUT coming with loads of plastic, eating local BUT not organic, buying organic skincare BUT from far away countries ... this is so complicated ! The only thing that helps me is being minimalistic and owning/consuming as less as possible/comfortable

But I appreciate a lot of what you're saying bc our plans have just had to massively change too. We're definitely going to have to use disposable diapers until I can walk again. Cloth will just be way too much. Sustainable eating is out the window right now while my partner has to do all the cooking. This is so hard, probably the hardest thing I've ever been through and I'm having to learn how to be more flexible and not judge myself or feel guilty for the changes we need to make. I just literally can't handle doing things, esp the way I would want to.

So many UA-camrs express dislike for diy skincare that they have promoted in the past but continue leaving them up for others to see which can cause more harm to those who don’t do the proper research or have sensitive skin (especially young adults and children who have more acne-prone skin - that was me during quarantine last year). *Don't let perfection be the enemy of progress*
I love so much of what you've said in this video. I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian but one of the reasons I watch you and have *stayed* subscribed is because of your gentle, non-judgemental approach. I am really interested in what changes I can realistically make for being environmentally friendly and a lot of other people I have watched/followed are very all-or-nothing which can be quite off-putting. Your approach is very accessible and I think that's more important. I believe in grassroots change but also that everyone doing a little bit counts more than a handful of people doing things perfectly.
Also agree on the skincare point and I cringe every time I see someone make their own toothpaste (regularly using bicarb breaks down enamel) because that should be left to experts.
And last but not least, thank you so much for being intersectional!
Keep up the good work Immy, you're truly inspiring! 💕

thoughts on diy skincare: I actually benefited from that A LOT because I am allergic to lactose but also cow milk proteins. Proteins in many face and body lotions and creams resemble these a lot and my skin got irritated and red and flaky even from the super expensice face cream for hyper sensitive skin. Sun screen was an itchy nightmare. I transitioned to coconut oil and violà, problem solved. I now use calendula oils, massaging oils and sun screen oil rather than sun screen cream. So while I don't diy stuff, ESPECIALLY not leon and vinegar, I mean come on guys, you really don't want acid on your skin, the zero waste diy skin care offered me a different perspective.

I think what you're doing is more natural/traditional skincare and that can work well for a lot of people.
But I do think there's value in skincare made by experts. Like nothing natural has helped my eczema but dermatologically formulated creams have. And there is so much research done into skincare to combat things that natural skincare alone can't.

I love watching your videos and your open minded personality. Being from a poor country, I used to consider that a disadvantage, as not many ppl take into account their environment when making shopping/habits decisions, but now I try to do my best, and see that as a positive thing, because it is in fact the lack of resources what makes me way less wasteful. I reuse everything and do not buy more than what I need. I also took ideas from your videos to make a lot of seasonal food in batches, which made me save money, time and damage, by choosing fruits and veggies which are in season. Totally agree on the alienation point! When I was in my mid 20's I had a go at being vegan and it was actually the vegan community that I tried to become involved in that made me feel like an outsider, like I didn't belong. Now I don't identify with any type of diet but I do generally avoid animal products and I find that I am both less wasteful and healthier this way. I hope to one day move to a more sustainable lifestyle than I am right now but I'm happy to say I'm on the right path. I make the best choice I can, when I can, and I don't beat myself up when it's not the 'perfect' lifestyle according to someone else. I watch multiple youtubers and some are homesteaders who raise and eat their own livestock and some are 100% Plant Based or Vegan. Thank you so much from France. What you said about being judgmental is also what I've learnt trying to live more sustainably. I received a lot of opinions, prejudices and judgment as I explained my choices and I felt angry about it but actually I was doing the same about people who disagreed. And I thought it was not so difficult to change a few things. Then I became a social worker and I realised how privileged I was to have time to think about sustainability and not about how I could find a meal for the day. Living a sustainable way is not just a question of wanting to save the planet, its also linked to social issues. I hope my english is not too bad to understand what I mean. I live in a climate that fruit, vegetables, nuts and foliage overall have an extremely limited growing season. Root vegetables lest the longest, but small farms have a year round food source. (Beef, pork and chicken) I understand that mistreatment of living things is very problematic but it seems very culturally challenging to change to a diet that isn’t supported by local Agriculture.
I enjoy the recipes and cooking but i’ve adjusted my waste in base level ways like using a water filter instead of buying plastic water bottles, watching my purchases and buying used first, keeping a simple life and a more minimal space. I enjoy and share nature with my kids as primary entertainment. I appreciate the life changes you have made (mostly why) and hope that as time passes I can adapt my life to a more sustainable one.
Current weather -40 Fahrenheit. But during that growing season i do have a garden and we do preserve as much as possible to be used through the year.

I'm also totally on board with figuring out your skin care routine and not feeling like a fraud for not making your own stuff. For myself I wash my body and face with a goats milk soap bar which I can use on my hair, though I usually use a shampoo bar from a bulk store near me. I make my own deo and just use sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil as a moisturizer. This works for me, my hair and my skin (and wallet) but our bodies and situations are all different and as I get older I'm not going to keep doing the same things if they stop working for me.

I'm sooooo sick of judgemental vegans. I'm glad you spoke on it. I tend to call people out when they're being judgemental and they tend to double down, which does even more harm. 😅 There is no one way to be sustainable or vegan. It's a different journey for everyone. I really like what you said about stepping aside and giving the mic to other people to talk - particularly voices we hear less often.
I would love to see content like that on your channel - I'm sure with a platform like yours there's loads of activists and thinkers who would be happy to explain the work they do and explain the frameworks they use. Margaret Robinson is an indigenous vegan, scholar and activist; Aph and Sly Ko are doing great work around the connections between animals rights, gender and race; as does Breeze Harper. And there's youtubers like Mexie and Seb Alex who are talking about these things too.
It'd be really cool to see you start to explore this kind of stuff and exposing your subs to new ideas.

When it comes to food, diet and veganism, my mindset is that as long as you do what you can it’s okay. If you’re a meateater, but you choose local and responsibly raised meat, organic and local eggs and milk etc. then it’s still a step in the right direction. I still eat some animal products but 80% of it is marked down and past the date, and it’s all produced very locally. In my mind it’s better to eat that food than to throw it out, since in my area food waste is a huge issue so I try my best to combat it by buying marked down food when I can.
I also co-own a non-profit that takes food past the expiration date from grocery stores and we hand it out to people in need. We’ve kept hundreds and hundreds of kgs of food out of the landfill just this year by giving it to families and people in need, if only more towns did this!

The non-judgemental part is essential for growth in everything. I was such a bully about some things in my early 20s. Trying to spread ethics but not in the best way. But it catches up with you when you yourself as a normal human being make mistakes or does something wrong. We need to forgive ourselves and letting obsession with perfection go. This is my favorite channel for feeling good. You make people feel good inside ❤

I've done well this year on trying to live sustainably and have cut down greatly on waste and spending. But I cannot get rid entirely of plastic packaging. This frustrates me greatly but the nearest bulk store is an hour's drive away! I now eat much less meat but cannot cut it out completely as I get ill without a substantial amount of protein. (But I've found that red meat no longer agrees with me. Nor does alcohol beverages!) So thank you for sharing your journey.

Thank you! I have a number of medical requirements that mean I cannot be completely vegan and while I have cut a lot of meat and dairy products from my diet but not all and I often feel guilty about it. To go further would be against medical advice. Likewise, there are a number of plastic items that I need for medical reasons (my ileostomy means I literally wear a plastic bag on my side every day) that I have had to come to terms with.
