From someone in their 40s who kicked themselves for not starting the saving process in my twenties, your advice is solid. “The earlier you start the less you have to save each month” is great advice.
Also, I appreciate your deliberations over monetization. And your followers understand you can’t create for free. 💚

I had a little chuckle when you said your bike was "already 7 years old". I'm Dutch, and that sounds like a young bike! A lot of people here still cycle on their parents or even grandparents bike and we cycle a lot! Mine is 15 years old, it's my first "grown up bike" I got in my early teens. And I don't consider it to be old. My bf cycles on his grandfather's bike and it's probably over 40 years old.
That said, taking care of our precious bikes is indeed important so they last that long ❤

Aside from tracking my spending, I find it's useful to have a "Wishlist" of items I want to buy. I skim my wishlist at the end of every week, sometimes adding an item or removing an item. If an item has stayed on my list for at least 3 months, I usually give myself permission to buy it - but only when it's on sale 😂. It helps me avoid impulse buys, save money, and overall I've just become much more intentional with my spending.

Couldn’t agree more about the re distribution of wealth …. Such an important topic and lots to unpack. It is so amazing that there are many people who give their money away to worthy causes but this still means that it is the rich and privileged who get to decide what a worthy cause is and who gets help. Ideally redistribution of wealth would be a tax system that ensures everyone’s needs are met, so that it is not up to an individual or individuals to decide, which can be difficult for those on either side. I know this isn’t a realistic prospect in today’s world but thought i’d comment anyway.

I get the whole thing about going paperless and not keeping physical books. Personally my real concern is the event if there was ever an outage or something and unable to access digital material. That being said, I try to purchase just ones that are classics and favorites that I know I will read over and over, and also my children will enjoy down the road. I am leaning more towards hardback too as I feel they have better "shelf life" (no pun intended) and bear wear and tear better than paper back. Purchasing them used also is a bonus. :) I so enjoy your videos. Thank you.

I inadvertently did a low-buy 6 months (still kind of doing it out of habit now). I had to move unexpectedly and life happened. I think it reaches a point where low-buy/ no-buy becomes a little soul destroying. Denying yourself and having to sell things just so you can meet your daily nutrient count is rough. But it does make you really appreciate the smallest things. Like neighbours giving things away, libraries (online libraries are amazing, I have never consumed soo many books soo quickly) and having legs that work. When you cannot afford public transport and do not own a bike (nor know how to ride one), having legs that work and a comfortable pair of shoes makes the world of difference if you spend over 2 hours a day walking as part of your commute/ errands.

  • @RainbowVegansRock

That was really great to see your 6 monthly update. I have to admit that when I watched your March update I didn't think that you'd bought much that was unnecessary. You made it clear that books were so important to you (same here), it didn't seem that anything was excessive to me. I'm doing a Low buy/ No buy year as well and I'm finding it really interesting, it really makes you much more appreciative of what you have. Also I think it shows what a genuinely lovely person you are that you're considerate about user experience of your subscribers 😘

@@SusanChristmas I didn't come here to discuss the validity of any specific political ideas - I just wanted to say that I think it's important to follow your own ethics. @@SusanChristmas I'll repeat myself - I didn't come here looking for a fight, and I don't appreciate your tone, so I won't respond after this.
But there's a few differences in how you view redistribution of wealth, and in how someone who supports the idea would. Mainly, I think it's that a supporter of the idea prioritizes human life and dignity over people's right to hoard money that they have gotten (I intentionally didn't use the word "earn" here, since accumulated wealth often is inherited, the result of the work of laborers who have been exploited, or simply gotten from working a job they could not have gotten without already having certain priviligies). If you want further explanation or to debate, there's tonnes of resources online or places on youtube which are made specifically for such purposes!

    • @raapyna8544
      @raapyna8544 2 роки тому

@@SusanChristmas Privilege is relative, as you may know.
Do you think taxing citizens and companies is stealing? Do you think all tax expenses should be voluntary, like paying for military, police, fire department?
This is just a difference in perspective, for Finns, the aforementioned and hospitals, education, and the eradication of poverty, are considered societal expences. The society wants to have healthy, educated, housed, non-criminal, and responsible citizens, so the society pays for certain things collectively. We believe it's in the interest of all to have a more equal society; the rich doesn't have to be afraid of being robbed, broken in, or their kids being kidnapped. People in desperate positions do desperate things. Remove desperation and you remove desperate measures. We are privileged because we get to take many things for granted. Like leaving your baby to sleep outside on their own. Or getting paid maternity leave and free health-check-ups and equipment for your baby.
Besides bicycle theft, sexual violence, or hate crimes, there's not much to worry about. We still have social issues, but they're less. If we could pay money to solve the rest of the issues, I would.

I did a no buy year for clothes and shoes after learning about the horrible world of fast fashion. the only new things that I got were gifted to me, and it really made me realise what kind of clothes are my actual style, what materials are better and more durable than others, I've found new ways to style the clothes that I already have. I then made a list with the kind of things that are missing in my wardrobe in order to express my style better, however I'm not buying them all at once, rather, when and if I find them. not having them does not affect me that much and I see it as a process. clothes and shoes were what I spent the most money on, and even though I was nowhere near an overconsumer, I can now use that money for other things. I did buy some other things that I deemed necessary because in the past 6 months I've been trying my best to live a low-waste life but the purchases were still thought through.
also, I agree on what you said about books and I for some time I was in a bit of a fuss since I'm a foreign languages and literatures student so obviously I need quite a lot of books that may or may not be expensive. in the end I decided to buy those books that were absolutely necessary and couldn't be found in a digital version, and I make fotocopies of textbooks.
wonderful video as always, Immy! Watching your videos is extremely calming 😌

Someone else may have said this but you can request an interlibrary loan to get books that your library doesn't have. (I can get a book in any of the North Wales libraries) Also you can request that the library buys a book that isn't currently in their regional system. It may take a while though if its a book that they don't consider will be that popular! So probably not a good route if you are eager to read it 😁📚 Glad the year is going well for you.

Hi guys I work for a bank & am also UK based. Love these helpful videos just wanted to add something. When Immy says set up a direct debit to your savings account I believe she means a Standing Order. A direct debit gives a company permission to automatically take money from your account e.g your gas/electric bill, this can only be set up by the provider. A standing order however is something that you set up to another account as an automated payment. You control the amount/date/frequency. Just wanted to clarify in case you wanted to set it up, it would be a standing order x hope this helps 😊

I get totally your love for book, I am a reader and kind of minimalist. Have to deal with economic books, but can’t wait for my night time routine to grab smth else like trillers and historical romance. I recently won on a competition a book What the wind knows historical romance set in Ireland and can’t wait to read it. My bicycle is like 20years old when I got it it was new Rog from Slovenia and I used it every day to go high school, I still have it and love it, fixing it every now and then when it needs new tires, seat, handles. This year I got an eroller because my dad gets older and he uses it to go grocery and is easier for him as he had two operations, I use it rarely but it makes me happy that he gets to move around without car and likes it as bicycle for him is a bit more demanding.

I'm coming off a low-buy year during the pandemic, and now actually doing an intentional "infrastructure investment quarter" to make sure I have good and proper tools to move back into very low-buy again come fall. Things like a decent bike finally, maybe a couch... really basic stuff! Between low-buy and the pandemic, it was a great opportunity to do expense tracking, set up a decent budget, and set myself up to make these very intentional, rather than reactive, choices and purchases. It's been great moving in parallel with you along this journey, and you have certainly helped massively!

I love your content and the chats. 😊 Recently I joined an online resale group where I sell/donate used items. I have found several items for sale that we find useful through this site, so we have not been low buy technically. However it is giving the items another life rather than having them sent to landfill.
Books are my weakness, but I buy used through the public library bookstore and borrow, too.
When we needed a new light fixture I made my way to Habitat for Humanity and found a great working light for our needs.

I started to appreciate services that give you access to e-books and audiobooks for a small fee. In Poland the biggest provider gave a very big discount because of the Pandemic and I have read a lot of books I would probably never have bought thanks to that. I also never buy physical books anymore unless I am 1000% sure I want to keep it or there is no other way I can get it. Even if that does not save money, it saves space and energy to store or get rid of the book once you are done with it.

As an aspiring writer - thank you for supporting authors :) It makes me really sad when some sustainable UA-camrs judge books as bad usage-time-value. Sure, you may only read a book once for a few hours, but good books also make life so much better. And it has likely taken the author at least a year to write what you read in 8 hours. I think any form of art shouldn't really be considered a bad investment, because if we let art die out, what will there be to live for?

Hello, I've recently started writing down what I spend money on. About 4 days in now and it's been good to do so far. I was curious about bulk buying and what I actually use in a year with the idea in mind to do one big shop a year then only spend on fresh produce throughout the year. Lockdown has taught me that I don't need outside man made stimulation, a life without pubs and random events that build up to costly amounts. Living more essentially and minimally has been a great pleasure and one I continue to practice.

I don’t know what the library landscape is like in the UK, but I work at a public library in the US, and most public libraries are part of regional or even state-wide consortia so that you can request books that your local library doesn’t own. For example, my library has an agreement with many colleges and universities in our state so you can borrow from academic libraries with your public library card. And you can request that your library purchase a title if they don’t own it. PLUS you can borrow ebooks from the library as well. Definitely get a public library card when you move to the US!

This doesnt matter much to the average consumer of ebooks but I wanted to let you know that one of the reasons they are cheaper is that you arent actually paying for ownership of the ebook, you're paying for access to the ebook (which, if you read the fine print means that the company you are "buying" ebooks through can legally take it back/change it at any time since they own it).

Lovely video, I love to stay informed about how to save and invest in one's future.
Speaking about books: I feel your struggle, it's so hard to stop buying them! Every year I do the same resolution - stop buying them and read the piles of unread books that just sit on the wooden shelves of my house and the digital shelves of my e-reader - but I have never succeeded in respect it! That's partly because I am really a bookworm but also because I want to give my support to local libraries and in general to the publishing sector.
Nevertheless I surely buy fewer books than in the past plus I've started to exchange and sell them online: by doing so I hope to get more space and hopefully to "liberate" them by giving the books that I didn't like/I don't intend to read to people who hopefully will read them.

Love the splitting accounts tip. I do that and it really helps clarify things. lol at the book tears though!😂 Totally agree about the book buying though. And there are so many ways to engage with literature. Depending on the author/topic/publisher/etc that will tend to determine if I buy books secondhand, new from my local indie, digitally, etc. Also agree with distribution of wealth. And there’s always a careful balance between saving for the future and making the most of our lives in the present. I like the idea of a low buy year, but it also feels very temporary to me due to it taking place over a specific timeframe (which can be good! you try it out and see how it works for you and can stop or continue as you like). But I think I like the idea of just trying to assess my consumption generally and indefinitely?

We are doing kind of a low buy year by accident. Due to covid a lot of stores were closed for several months and we started to renovate a house. As the prices for materials did explode during the past months, we are saving all the money, that we would have spend on all the unnecessary items and really think about it we really need the item or not. 😉
