      Hey Immy, these are great gift ideas! I'm a fellow "hand talker" and I've noticed recently that loads of people online speak with there hands bouncing along with most words. I'm finding it very distracting, the hand motions are "louder" than your words if that makes sense. Most likely this is my own issue but I want to share constructive feedback!

    Conscious gifting is a thing!! What if we all thought more about contentment instead of consumption? When I make, thrift, or buy a gift for someone, the first thing I do is to ask myself, “What makes this person content or happy?” This steers me in the right direction to finding or making a gift that suits them as well as my values. Contentment over consumption. PS - I just gifted my SIL some home-baked bagels and a jar of jam for her birthday. (I used your bagel recipe, Immy). She texted me later in the day to say how delicious the bagels were and how they were the perfect gift for her. Thanks for sharing all your great ideas with us, Immy. Everything you do is so very much appreciated!! Ⓜary🩵🥯

    As a fiber artist, I want to send a word of warning about handmade goods! Giftees may start to feel a little entitled to your craft each year. Not saying don't ever make something for people, but be cautious of whether the person you want to gift for is worth it. Know your worth!

    • @helmickkm
      @helmickkm Місяць тому +9

      Very this! Everyone that I’ve made gifts for know that they aren’t entitled to my work, and they’ve also bought my work. Setting that clear boundary and expectation is imperative.

    I love you, Immy, and the incredible work you bring into the world. I wish more people-especially those committed to sustainability-would resist the pressure to release gift guide videos at this time of year, which often still focus on buying new things, regardless of a brand’s sustainability claims.
    It would be so refreshing to reimagine and decouple the holiday season from the corporate mandates that have hijacked it, turning it into a frenzy of buying, buying, buying. What if we all opted out of giving and receiving gifts altogether? What if, instead, the holidays became a time rooted in community, love, and meaningful ways to give back-completely detached from products? What could this season look like if we reclaimed it for connection and care?

    I don't like gifts because I don't need much, but I love my scarf that my mum made 😍
    Every year for Christmas my mil gives me a present that I don't really like, she buys from the brands that are not sustainable and to be honest she buys stuff that I don't need or even like, so this year I decided to tell her that I don't want any gifts and that I appreciate that she wants to buy me something, but is not necessary.

      Maybe you can suggest your mother-in-law to use the money she wants to spend on a gift for you and donate it to a charity/non-profit /shelter working hard to make this world better (I mention a few in a comment above). She can then gift you the card / the mail thanking for this donation. Like this you help her be aware of different harsh realities where every $ is needed.

    I’m crocheting my dad a scarf this year! I bought some beautiful wool yarn at a local yarn shop (unfortunately I can’t afford the locally-spun yarn, but I did drool over them for a bit and they got added to my wish list), and I’m excited to give him the scarf! He wears the cowl I gave him last year ALL THE TIME.
    I’m also making my partner a shawl to go with the beanie and fingerless gloves I already made him. He’s never asked for any of them because he knows how much time and effort goes into my work and how valuable my pieces are, but I listen to him mention things in passing and make little mental notes and he’s always so thrilled when I give him a new thing. He’s also always confused when I give them because he never remembers mentioning that he’s been on the hunt for a particular item 😂 He’s going to be the coziest guy in Colorado, and I’m so happy to be able to do that for him.

    I love WGAC recycled TP! No plastic and zero waste if you reuse the paper packaging and TP cores; we use it to help start fires in our wood stove.

    • @shelleysmith4017
      @shelleysmith4017 Місяць тому +4

      I have been using WGAC for a little over 5 years now. I have tried a box from a competitor plastic free tp company that was 100% bamboo and did not like it, ended up donating the case to one of the local shelters, they raved about it, so I also donated a case of WGAC for them to distribute to those getting back into housing after being homeless and those getting a house and restarting after escaping domestic violence as part of their care package to welcome them to their new home. I won’t use anything else. I have a friend who rescues guineapigs and because everything in their product is environmentally friendly and plant based, the guineapigs get to enjoy chewing on the cardboard tubes. I also use the paper they wrap around each roll for wrapping (although I don’t use the part that has their name on it). But I also use the paper to make paper beads for jewellery making, to use on clay with epoxy resin to make various items, beads, earrings, art pieces, ring holders, bowls, etc. I use some of the rolls that the guineapigs don’t get to make fire starters and to make seed pots for the veggies that hate root disturbance but need to be started indoors for the best start.

      @ thanks! Btw forgot to mention I love your ID name! It is so true and simply perfect! I am vegan, hubby can’t give up dairy so is vegetarian. During lockdown he was at the grocery store and the place puts the refrigerated tofu and fake meat in the meat section (🤢). So he was picking up more tofu and an elderly gentleman was upset that the meat eating folks had been hoard buying and he had little to choose from. He saw hubby with the tofu, shook his head in disgust and said he would rather starve than eat that stuff. Hubby shrugged and said if you know how to cook it, it is delicious. The guy grumbled and off he went. 2 weeks later hubby was back in the store and saw the same man. The meat had been out of stock and he was getting desperate so he asked hubby how exactly to cook it to make it taste good and what he ate besides tofu to get enough protein. I was so proud of my hubby (who told me when I went vegan not to expect him to eat that rabbit food lol) he asked what the guy and his family liked to eat and proceeded to give him easy recipes to try, walked him through how to use not just tofu but even lentils, mushrooms and nuts for the meaty mouth feel. He gave the gentleman my number and name and said if he had questions or was stuck or his wife, who he said did the cooking, could call. While they have not gone vegan, we have become friends and they eat cruelty free at least three days a week now. But they learned the secrets to cooking with tofu and learned to enjoy it because of hubby. 😂💚🫶

      @@shelleysmith4017 Great witty hubby! Tell him that he is addicted to dairy (especially cheese) because it is as addictive as COCAINE. Once you give it up and let some time pass, you find it DISGUSTING! Cheese is the number 1 food linked to prostate cancer (that should give him some food for thought) and breast cancer (which, by the way, can happen to both men & women). Dairy is responsible for mass rapes, forced impregnations, mass separations of mothers & babies and for mass deaths. I used to LOVE cheese, I'm happy I managed to give it up in 2018. To keep in mind that there is also a middle ground between vegetarian and vegan, meaning you don't eat cheese, milk, eggs directly and hence in bigger quantities, but you sometimes eat some sweets or a vegetable tart, etc which contain small quantities of egg or milk or cheese. This is already much better than being a vegetarian in my opinion.

      @shelleysmith4017 Місяць тому +2

      A lower-petrol option for oiling cutting boards is refined coconut oil, which similarly doesn't go rancid so readily as most food-ingredient oils. It's still got a climate footprint, but could be worth considering. Everything has tradeoffs, so it can be good to know multiple alternatives.
