Its easy to shake and distribute mycelium and spores throughout the bags with millet, its my favorite to use and its cheap.

Can you explain this better for me... 6 lbs of media used and 38% moisture so...2.28 lbs of water.. can you skip the weighing out the water and just put the 6 lb bag of media on the scale and add water until it is 8.28 lbs?

I could be wrong but I believe he's just hydrating and sterilizing raw grain. You'll be hard pressed to find that (clean) of grain anywhere.

I noticed you saying "millet is good when used to inoculate other bags".
My observation is that millet used as nutrient source is not ideal because it holds quite a bit less moisture than for example rye berries which lowers the yield alot.
Due to the simplicity of the preparation with the no boil method and the amount of inoculation points its also my choice as grain spawn - to spread it over a different nutrient source.
It's crazy how fast millet colonizes when inoculated with liquid culture compared to other grains.

Are you saying, you think Millet doesn't hold as much water so that would lower yields? Because if so you could just add extra water to your substrate mix to make up the difference. Have you done any testing with isolated genetics for yield comparisons with rye berries and millet?

It seems that the 38% part wasn't quite clear for many of us.. Would you be so gentle as to clarify this again, maybe with an example and measures with a recipe? You mean that for 100grams of grain you would need 38ml of water? Thank you : )

In quart jars you want to use half of the total weight. Just weigh in grams.
1ml water=1 gram
But one ml of millet or grains won't be a gram because of density.
If you're using heavier bags you want less moisture content in higher lb bags. So the weight of the grain and then 38% of that in grams of water.

It all depends on the strain of mushrooms and your production size. Using CO2 meters and temp gauges and humidity controllers helps with keeping your environment climate controlled.
Check out a few books on growing mushrooms for specific details about temp ranges that are ideal for each mushroom strain.

I watched all three of your videos last nite. i have been playing around small time for 5+ years, about to take the leap to large scale. i have always just soaked my grains overnite but i want to try skipping that step and do it all in the bag like this. my apologies if i missed the info in the video, but when you say your adding 38% water, do you mean for 5 LB BAG your adding 3.1# grain and 1.9lb water 5x .38= 1.9 water and 3.1 grain? or 5lbs grain and then 1.9 water? i remember years ago trying this and it worked out pretty well just pouring water till it was just under even with the grain, going 1.9 water and 3.1 grain seems to be more water than grain. thanks in advance. Great looking facility, i wish i had that much room. i have a bunch of multipileum going right now and just starting to fan out.

Thank you! You will want to seal after sterilization in a clean environment(sealing prior will cause bags to burst), usually in front of the flow hood, after inoculation occurs.

HI, so are you saying add 6 pounds of say barley. 2.722kg and then add 38% water which would be 1.03kg of water? Then pressure cook it.

Moister Content:
Weight of Mass / 100 * 38% = Weight of water
3.8 kg (got this number from 2:04, assuming the weight is kg) / 100 * 38% = 1.444kg of water
1.444 kg to cups is 6.1 cups of water
And if you do a 1kg formula it's 380gr which is 400ml =1.6 cups.
I believe the measurements are in lbs. Being that Southwest Mushrooms is located in Phoenix, Arizona. But your equation is correct.

Try out different amounts of grain spawn and find what works best for your operation. Depending on your environment/equipment, you’ll find what works better for you and maximize your profits.

@@mckenzier4363 seems like you would want the percentage of total grain weight. Imo that quantity of water might be too much for just shy of 4 lbs grain. If you try it out, lmk

If that is the case, mentally I can figure that it is 38% of total weight is water. "Moisture content" made it seem like there may have been an extra formula to convert

Is 4 hours of sterilization too long? I’ve been doing 90 minutes of sterilization, but for 3 pounds of millet and have had good results
That grain has pesticides on it. I used it for a long time and it would leave rashes on my arm, I used it for a year before it started to show up. Now I only use oats. When you add water and grain together doesnt it just cake the bottom of the bag and cause the top to dry out? Thats been my experience with pour and pressure cooking.
from the little experience i have doing this all in one method i always had to mix the grain well while it was still hot to distribute the over hydrated bottom stuff so as it cool it equalizes better.

Thanks for your valuable information. I have a question please, So, 3.72 Lb dry millet + 2.28 water(with a little bit of gypsum) = 6 Lb. left them for 24 house but still pretty wet.
What went wrong?
He only adds 38% water. Take your grain weight, divide it by 100. Multiply that by 38. That would be 1.41 water.

It does work, but I imagine if you've moved up to a scale like this Uncle Ben's would no longer be economical.
If growing on a professional level, with lots of your time, hard work, and $$ invested, you'd want to be as efficient and successful as possible. Noccin' up ready rice bags is for someone dipping their toes into mycology, but is horrible for anyone wanting to make it a business.

You said 38% moisture. But when i add 0.380 kg of water to 1 kg of dry grain water doesn't cover the seeds like your grain bag. Your grain bag shows the level of water covering the seeds. I am confused 😕

Could I use the exact same tek for whole oats? Specifically talking about just pouring the water in the bags and PCing rather than boiling the grains first.
Yes, but I still let the bags sit for 24 hours for any endospores to germinate before I autoclave 'em. Not sure if I have to, but I figure it's better safe than sorry. Maybe look up Mossy Creek Mushroom's channel too if you want a video, Andrew has a couple videos on his process with oats. He soaks his oats in a bucket instead of a soaking in the bag, but it's basically the same.

You want to produce a condition that the mycelium manages to spread into volume in a short time and be immune to infections. If you mix the two stages the mycelium will not be able to spread quickly most likely the competitors will spread faster on the substrate. You develop from a small volume to a large volume only if you have enough volume of mycelium. It's all about mushrooms need patience and let nature work. You will learn the rhythm of the mycelium that will teach you a lot about life itself.
just wondering what the benefit of sterilising for 4 hours at 15psi is over sterilising for 2? just for piece of mind?
Most likely because they are use larger sterilizers with lower heat so they have to adjust the time

Hey! Lobster mushrooms are actually a bit unique-they’re not a single mushroom species but rather a parasitic fungus (Hypomyces lactifluorum) that infects other mushrooms, usually certain Russula or Lactarius species. This makes them difficult to cultivate because they require a host mushroom to grow. Unlike Lion’s Mane, which can be cultivated from tissue culture, lobster mushrooms don’t respond to tissue culture alone since they rely on finding a specific host in the wild. They’re fascinating but tricky to work with in a controlled setting!

Sorry about the bots, I like popcorn a lot and personally don’t like brown rice since it tends to cake up. I’ve heard bird seed is good but haven’t tried it. Really the best is to find what you prefer though

Old comment but it’s too wet which can cause issues. Personally I prefer jars anyway, less plastic and you can see what’s happening better
Why do you sterilize them for 4 hours? That seems like a really long cycle. Shouldn't 2-2.5hr be enough?
For a smaller vessels like quarts 2-2.5 hours works fine, for the spawn bag I aim for 3.5-4 hours to ensure core reach effective sterilization temperature.

charlie brown just the 6lb bags, you can get away with 2-5-3 hours for a 3lb bag.
