One of the geratest problems of today is that proper old cars are now an investment for non driving rich people,so the cars are standing to death in climate chambers waiting for the next auction!
+David Zu Elfe are you a new member of the team? There's a really unique style to this video that I loved. Especially the lack of drone shots, they're always cool but some people rely on them too much and the video ends up looking over polished and smooth, which is never close to a vintage driving experience. Cool stuff on your channel too!
Not a new one, but few films done so far. Check itxfilms.co/ if you want to see more, my yt-Channel is old garbage. I am not keen on using the drone if it doesn't suit the story. Cheers!
+David Zu Elfe I agree, you work is amazing! The work of the whole petrolicious team is also amazing. Is there a link, somewhere, to some credits? I would love to know some more about the makers
ottifant64 It's not funny if I have to explain it. Aviation was seen as exotic, exciting, done to a higher standard, desirable, and a car company would want to capture and reproduce the ambience of an aircraft, in their car. Very nearly a hundred years later and nothing much has changed.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that is more than likely a result of Bentley's heavy involvement in WWI with their rotary aircraft engines. The same can be seen in BMW, Mercedes (German), Rolls Royce, and even Harley Davidson. (Harley engines are actually based off an aircraft radial engine design)
I've said it before and I'll say it again... Petrolicious, your work is absolutely stunning, probably the best car channel on the Internet/tv... Your camera work, and how you allow the owner to tell their story is masterful.... Thank you for all you videos
Driving home from work quite some years ago,I l looked in my rear view mirror and saw this odd shaped vehicle coming up in the fast lane and I couldn't work it out. However as this thing was catching me up at a fair rate of knots the penny dropped "A blower Bentley"I moved over dropped all the windows and as this thing pulled along side, what a site and sounded like a Spitfire.I remember the driver was wearing a white shirt flying helmet and goggles, but I'll never forget that sound it gave me goosebumps and the hair on the back of my neck stood up,never forget that journey home.
This is the third or fourth time Ive come back to watch this. Beautiful cars and a masterful mechanic. So many nihilistic themes in media and these examples of mastery both of repairing and understanding the value in the craftsmanship of the era....Hats of Mr Metcalf. It would be a pleasure to meet in person. Godspeed.
one of the greatest Petrolicious ever offered9, the music the sound and the story all melted into one magnificent car minifilm ! I hope many more of this kind will come in the future !
Sorry to add a sour note, but the historics about the desert drive were fine, but the film told us very little about THE car, nor about the rest of the magnificent kit in his shop. HUGE opportunity lost I think. WF
My comment was in response to the remark that a video about a man is more interesting than a video about a car. It was not a comment about this video at all. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
I m not surprising for the 66 non stop hours driving if you have PASSION, and you have a lot my friend. All the best to you keeping your family living memories!! Congratulations!!
4th time watching this "film" and I can't stop. What an interesting bloke, I wish I could invite him for some brandy around the fireplace to have a lecture on old Bentleys... And what a fantastic photography work, you've outdone yourselves Petrolicious.
The best film yet. very moving for some reason. Perhaps the link back to his Father. All about the cars and not all about the ego of the owner. Excellent work.
I live in Australia and have driven across the Nullarbor Plain several times but to drive for 66 hours straight, that is the stuff of legend. But to do it in a 90 year old Bentley…you are an absolute legend and so is that car. 👍👍👍
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, the prewar Bentleys are the absolute perfect car. There’s nothing better. I can only hope to own one myself some day
car videos who can touch any person, love the ending with the roar of the engine through an old english country road along with some fast paced violins is really satisfying to hear and experience, great cinematography in all of these video series. oscar material
Possibly my favourite Petrolicious video. I own a 1950s Land Rover so I'm no stranger to old British Engineering but the size of every component on those Bentleys was something else.
By far my favorite video on Petrolicious, and what I judge all other videos from this channel and others now following this format. I use this video to introduce my friends to it, and have watched it more than I care to admit. The last two minutes are pure perfection. The cinematography, the feel, the music, just amazing. I don't know why it took me a month to post on this video, but bravo. Just amazing.
What a viseral experience! The camera views from all over the car, to the trees whipping by at speed. You even had my German Shepherd watching with much interest!
The ripping exhaust note of a big four-banger Bentley is a sound of beauty. So it was sad to have it drowned out by violins and drums. Other than that it was a top video.
videos like this is why I love this channel - very nice! one note though: would love to hear more of that engine! the music is lovely, but I need more of that amazing roar!
Wow what a stunning machine with such an incredible soundtrack! Absolutely breathtaking! And the production quality and cinematography of this video really showed the car off beautifully.
I never thought about unsynchronised until I bought a 1952 Dodge US Army M37 Power Wagon. In some ways it's like driving a pre war car, the windshield goes down and you are sitting up higher that later modern cars. 3rd and 4th are synced for me, first is a granny, so going up from 2nd isn't bad, but from 3rd to 2nd is what I have to practice. So I can appreciate what he is saying about the gearbox. I think I would pick a pre war Bentley if I could have any car. There is something special about all that gear noise and wind blowing around. I also have a 240Z and it's just so different, I love having the contrast. You should get an M37 on Petrolicious, it's a crazy old truck that went to Korea and Vietnam.
Just as the vast majority here have been saying, this is one of the best from Petrolicious. And the best part for me is while I was watching this short I thought to myself "Man, this reminds me so much of 'The Alpine Awakening'" (which is another favourite of mine), only for me to find out they were both created by the same person. I tip my hat to you, David Zu Elfe .
I'm not sure passion is the right word here. This is love, perhaps more than love. Some cannot sustain passion, lust... most can understand love can be ever lasting and formed from love given. There is much missing from this anthology of love. As I watched this I longed for pictures of your family on your 9 month journey. As that is the foundation and basis for the love projected in the story. They say life is not a means to an end for we all end the same... the winners.. the losers... the famous.. the homeless. What matters is the journey and what we make of that journey. Clearly, your journey Mr. Metcalf, led you to an everlasting unconditional love. And that is an entirely a different kind of love. Thank you for sharing.
Wow! That is the best video I've seen on Petrolicious. Really beautiful to watch. Wonderfully directed. I enjoyed every minute and now I will watch again.
A truly great video about a truly great British car. Never seen a real one but l do have an Airfix model of it - my pride an joy. Thanks for sharing this video with us, much appreciated. PROFESSOR KEN.
Wonderful piece! I must say, though, that this is the first time I've ever noticed the reflection of the camera/equipment in the paint of a vehicle. I'm sure there may have been other times, but for as many Petrolicious films I've seen, that's saying something. Well done!
You don't respect an old car by locking it in a safe shed, you drive it how it was built be driven. Massive respect for this guy and his car.
sorry for the bad english lol
That english was perfect mate!
One of the geratest problems of today is that proper old cars are now an investment for non driving rich people,so the cars are standing to death in climate chambers waiting for the next auction!
It's always good to lock a few away for preservation. Cars don't have feelings, so no worries about hurting their feelings.
@@knut-hinrichqwalter2463 have you ever been to the Bentley day at Silverstone? There’s loads of them
"The best way to see a car is coming sideways through a chicane." Beautifully said.
"Anything with wheels, should be raced." As a life long motorcyclist, I couldn't possibly have said it better.
Those two comments made me instantly like this guy.
+Kneedragon1962
Yes.
+me3333
Definitely. He'd be great to hang out with.
So let's see it sideways. I don't think it was driven over 60 anywhere.
the cinematography alone deserves an Oscar...!
Thank you!
+David Zu Elfe are you a new member of the team? There's a really unique style to this video that I loved. +David Zu Elfe I agree, you work is amazing! The work of the whole petrolicious team is also amazing. Is there a link, somewhere, to some credits? I would love to know some more about the makers
These videos give me chills. This is how history should be presented in order to capture the minds of younger generations.
6:16 "Anything with wheels should be raced" Grandma, are you sitting comfortably in your wheelchair? yes? Good...
Well well
this video was so so so beautiful, I feel like I need to pay you guys. Still can't believe you give us this kind of material for free. Thank you.
I just want to take a moment to thank the crew for this video, the feeling of passion, music and editing is amazing. It made my day.
That's my uncle William!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That video was brilliant! :)
The cockpit and front view from inside looks like an late 1910s/1920s fighter aircraft, awesome.
LOL - There's a reason for that...
+Kneedragon1962
And the reason for that is...?
ottifant64 It's not funny if I have to explain it. Aviation was seen as exotic, exciting, done to a higher standard, desirable, and a car company would want to capture and reproduce the ambience of an aircraft, in their car. Very nearly a hundred years later and nothing much has changed.
Kneedragon1962 Okay.

“The best way to see a car is coming sideways through a chicane,” That should be the creed of every car enthusiast!
thorandmoljnir i agree 1000%
I've said it before and I'll say it again... Petrolicious, your work is absolutely stunning, probably the best car channel on the Internet/tv... Your camera work, and how you allow the owner to tell their story is masterful.... Thank you for all you videos
I never thought Petrolicious cinematography could get any better.
I was wrong. This here is some epic stuff.
The ice on the cake would be your father's picture on the video, considering what you've mentioned about his thoughts. What a great man!
The car, the scenery, the soundtrack and of course the driver, were all PERFECT!!!! WOW!!! Great video.
Can you give us a thirty minute audio recording of that Bentley being driven?
That's a symphony to these old ears!!

The production and the filming are superb !
I love the headlights' means at dawn and the location choice is evoking.
Well done!

vintagebentley.com/ That is his website
Bye and far the best eps . ever,
The way the "crash box" was described was over the top
one of the greatest Petrolicious ever offered9, the music the sound and the story all melted into one magnificent car minifilm ! I hope many more of this kind will come in the future !
the production of this one is perfect!

+Billbothebear14 that's why it's titled life as a Bentley Boy. This was more interesting than just some facts about a car.
+David Zu Elfe who are you to this video? why are you saying thanks?
My comment was in response to the remark that a video about a man is more interesting than a video about a car. It was not a comment about this video at all. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
this is your best film, without a shadow of a doubt! the cinematography, the music... simply sublime!
One of the best videos to date. A real comeback from the recent ones.
This is one of the most ridiculously beautiful short films I've ever seen. Thank you so, so much for this.
holy fuck, I'm floored by the production of the video and the life path this man has
What a gorgeous sound of the roar of that Bentley screaming down that lane. Passionate!!
Best petrolicious video in a LONG time
The style of this video reminds me of that of Francis Ford Coppala’s “The Black Stallion” (which was brilliant).
That closing segment and those filming angles took me along for the ride of a lifetime!
What passion. The guy, his father, the car, the story, this production, this channel. What passion.
The old English gauges always look amazing :)
The best film yet. very moving for some reason. Perhaps the link back to his Father. All about the cars and not all about the ego of the owner. Excellent work.
This and the Z40 Fairlady are now for me the top two of this channel!
I live in Australia and have driven across the Nullarbor Plain several times but to drive for 66 hours straight, that is the stuff of legend. But to do it in a 90 year old Bentley…you are an absolute legend and so is that car. 👍👍👍
BEST VIDEO TO DATE!!! Although, i wish i heard more of the Bentley engine sound and saw it probably go quick around a corner
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, the prewar Bentleys are the absolute perfect car. There’s nothing better. I can only hope to own one myself some day
Gorgeous and dramatic, evocative of a long-lost era of motoring.
car videos who can touch any person, love the ending with the roar of the engine through an old english country road along with some fast paced violins is really satisfying to hear and experience, great cinematography in all of these video series. oscar material
Okay;...This filming is incredible!................. Am I right?
Last minute of video with high tempo music and driving experience of vintage Bentley gave me goosebumps..
Who the hell downvotes these videos? The only reason I could think of is that the videos are allways too short, no matter how long they are. :P
What art this car is, truly a beauty that goes beyond just the mechanical.
I'm blown away by the passion that you import into making these videos...
Possibly my favourite Petrolicious video.
I own a 1950s Land Rover so I'm no stranger to old British Engineering but the size of every component on those Bentleys was something else.
Brings back memories of my uncle Sammy Davis. Never new his achievements until it was to late but a true Bentley boy
Those early Bentley's are just heroic automobiles. Wonderful story as well.
These shortfilms are so much better than any hollywood movie
That was simply wonderful! That last scene with the Philip Glass score and the exhaust left me with goose bumps! Thank you!
I would gladly pay $10 for a ticket to see this in a movie theater and enjoy every minute of this beautiful cinematography
You guys never pull punches with the quality of your videos. Simply amazing.
These videos deserve awards. The countryside is gorgeous.
That must be somewhere in Great Britain, I suppose. Magnificent.
Hand tools and fire....90 years years later and you can still put the boots to it. What a ride!
Again, an amazing video with very appropriate music. Love it!
This is pure Petrolicious! Thank you.
So cool to see people that passionate about a car / cars. And the video editing continues to be superb. Keep up the great work Petrolicious
Fantastic video! Driving old Bentley's full-tilt on old dirt roads is - amazing! The sound of that motor!
In my opinion, this man deserves the utmost respect from professional point of view.
These films continue to surpass perfection, and yet continuously augment in production value.
Stunning video. I had the pleasure to see these Bentleys in action at Goodwood last Saturday ❤
Incredible piece of cinematography. Perfect.
How does Petrolicious constantly tell such full, rich stories in only ten minutes? This one is especially beautiful.
Probably, the best Petrolicious video, ever.
I think i've seen it more than 20 times since it was published.
What a viseral experience! The camera views from all over the car, to the trees whipping by at speed. You even had my German Shepherd watching with much interest!
Ones of the best car videos I'f ever seen.
Old vehicles have a soul....I love them all.
Amazing cinematography
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
I would love to be a passenger in this through some of those lanes, beautiful in every way.
The ripping exhaust note of a big four-banger Bentley is a sound of beauty. So it was sad to have it drowned out by violins and drums. Other than that it was a top video.
Apart from the obvious interest, the video is particularly well done! Its quality is remarkably good. Congratulations on an outstanding job.
videos like this is why I love this channel - very nice! one note though: would love to hear more of that engine! the music is lovely, but I need more of that amazing roar!
The production on this is out of this world
Wow what a stunning machine with such an incredible soundtrack! Absolutely breathtaking! And the production quality and cinematography of this video really showed the car off beautifully.
That thing sounds like an old spitfire, love it
I never thought about unsynchronised until I bought a 1952 Dodge US Army M37 Power Wagon. Another epic film guys. What can I say but well done, bravo.
Not a Bentley fan but my god that interior was fkn beautiful
Love these videos, the story, the people, the visuals ... simply perfect.
this is an awesome film. Thank you, Sir for having what it takes. it's a beautiful thing.
The percussive section from around 6:12 was pure genius!
Every piece on this channel is just fantastic
what a phenomenal production...bravo
Many thanks for letting us share this great story with you wish all the best
The cinematography is simply stunning, every single frame is a spectacular image, my compliments to the channel. Keep up the good work!
this is by far one of the greatest episodes!!
Every moment of this is perfection
One of the best shot videos here. This is a real "car guy".
this is one of the most beautifully rendered visions you lot have made to date.
Just as the vast majority here have been saying, this is one of the best from Petrolicious. And the best part for me is while I was watching this short I thought to myself "Man, this reminds me so much of 'The Alpine Awakening'" (which is another favourite of mine), only for me to find out they were both created by the same person.

Wow! That is the best video I've seen on Petrolicious. Really beautiful to watch. Wonderfully directed. I enjoyed every minute and now I will watch again.
Love the glow of the dash lights at dusk!
Big big shout out to the film makers on this one... props.
I was a very lucky boy to be able to drive this awesome car during the Benjafields 24h in Portugal. I am still dreaming of driving this car every day.
Pure magic! Great, great, great!! Greetings from Brazil!
A truly great video about a truly great British car. Never seen a real one but l do have an Airfix model of it - my pride an joy. Thanks for sharing this video with us, much appreciated. PROFESSOR KEN.

perhaps the best Petrolicious video yet, excellent job gents.
What a great little film. Those Bentley's were automotive art. I couldn't afford one so settled for an xk 150.
