I’ve watched over 200 fly tying videos to gain knowledge on how to tie. I’ll be 77 in September and just starting to tie and fish again. I’m very impressed with your knowledge, professionalism and teaching methods. I now wish I had found you first as it would have saved me many hours. Thank you for a great presentation and keep your line tight.
Wow Tom, thank you for the kind compliments! Really appreciate you watching. So nice to hear that you find my videos helpful. Tight lines to you and best of luck!
One of my favorites...a mix of a classic bright perdigon and a natural stuff. High number of this flies in my fly box. For me better in 2'8 mm and smaller. I make a variation that I love. Tail: hare's ear, body: quill, a big orange collar, and a big black wing case. Tight lines!!!
Exceptional instructional video! Thank you for taking the time and effort to put this together and share it. Love how you go beyond simply explaining the “how to” but provide context around the “why”. Anybody looking to publish content for fly tying instructionals would be well served to watch your videos and how you go about teaching.
Great job Cory on the tying video. You provide some good tips on thread control, quill prep and how to keep a slim profile. I can speak first hand on the success of this pattern. Thanks for sharing.
Nice Cory ! This is one of my favorite patterns. I gotta say I’m loving the tip for tying in the flash. I’ve been using that tip for the last few weeks 😁👍🏼 Thanks!!
Nicely done. I like the explanation you provided while tying this fly and the great care you took doing it. ( Reminds me of "Oholi's flies" ) I use disposable, retractable scalpels to cut materials where I don't want the tag end showing. You used a cosmetic brush. I recently found some dental applicator brushes with very fine tips to apply resin. I had some instances where the black resin popped off. My solution was to apply it first, cure it, and then "paint" the rest of the body with the clear resin. I also coat the black resin with the clear one. I don't yet know how well the fly stand up to abuse by the fish.
Oholi is a great tyer….Appreciate the comment! I use scalpels, as well. Great little tools. And your way def works with doing the black first, then coating with clear. Thanks for watching and tight lines!
Did I see that you’ll be in Denver !? I’m in grand junction , about 4 hour drive I’ll try to make it I’d love to meet the master in person and get your autograph haha
I really like the look of this fly and can't wait to tie a few. Just a quick question though. You put the wing case on the top of the fly but I thought the fly inverts because it's on a jig hook? I would have thought that the wing case would go on the underside? Clearly doesn't make any difference if the fish still nail it.
It's a great fly. You are correct, it doesn't matter. I get asked this question often so I have put it on my FAQs on my website. You can see it here: www.olddominiontroutbum.com/about-us Appreciate you watching!
Really nice job. I'm curious though, as I understand it one of the reasons we use jig hooks is they are supposed to fish upside down and not get caught up as much on the bottom, but that being the case should not the wing case be on the other side of the fly ?
Thanks Scott! A great question...I use copper and silver for 90 percent of my flies (the other 10% is light pink). I like copper for browns and tans. I use silver for the “others”, Light Olives, yellows, blues. Darker olives, I use both silver and copper. Black I use silver because of the great contrast. Visually all of these color combos just look good to me. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Cory! I just happen to have all of those materials, except for the last ingredient in the recipe the "hard as hull." Is that finger nail polish? By the way Thanks for answering my comments. I'll try not to be a pain, but I'm determined to gain some expertise in this endeavor. I just bought a 10' 3 wt. Hanak Czech nymph rod and RIO nymph, so I'm getting set up. Thank again! Jim
Hard as hull is a fly tying head cement. You can use any clear varnish that brushes on. It isn’t 100 percent necessary, but I like it for the protection. You are not pain…I’m happy to help! That is a good rig you got for this technique. Tight lines to you!
If you do this with a tungsten bead the slightest touching of the edge to the bead will damage the edge of your scissors….even the softer copper, and brass beads will damage your scissor edge.
I’ve really never had a problem with them getting dull. Perhaps the tungsten carbide scissors I use could have something to do with it. Appreciate you watching.
Many online fly shops have them. You can google it. “Polish quills”. They are hand stripped peacock quills. I’m not sure what bleached looks like. I’ve always use this brand.
Thanks, Nathan! If you watch Devin, he spins his around when he starts it up the hook to get the dark side at the bottom. Sometimes you get uneven bump this way. When you start it like me, you never have that problem and it is always a nice and smooth. Appreciate you watching!
Nathan, I’m sure it’s so sort of supply chain issue. The only other substitute is Solarez…they make a black, but I’m not a big fan. I would use black nail polish and cover with hard as hull. Hope this helps and appreciate you watching!
Hi Cory what is your standard size hook for this? I live near a crystal clear stream and the average cfs is 50. So the bugs can't be to big. I was thinking size 20. But wanted to make a few for different streams.
Jeremy, I tie these from size 20-16. Really love olive with a silver bead in size 18 and 20. Great BWO imitation. Golden-olive with a copper bead is a great one in a size 16.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Yea i pulled out a pack of old veniard quills and i was sure they would be brittle.I added them to lukewarm water and tied up 3 quilldigons no breakages. Thanks Cory
Hey James. Probably coincidence. I use silver a lot as well. I am a copper and silver guy for 90% of my flies. One other fly I use black on…my Honey Badger Sculpin. I also like light metallic pink.

Crystal clear directions. Not too much or too little info/talking. Your style follows the adage "do a few things well" . Great teaching and advocacy!

Hi Cory. I really appreciate the precision of tying and control of the materials. Please advise the make of your Whip Finisher.
Thanks, David. Appreciate it! The whip finisher is a Dr. Slick Whip Finisher.

Where can I get the wing case resin. Thanks for the great videos
Appreciate it, Mark. You can find this on Tactical Fly Fishers website.
only pattern you need on Central PA streams spring to fall lol, kill 'em on this everytime, with a hot spot though

what kind of quil is that ? my peacock quils are always dark and no light bits like yours...great video great work
They are natural polish quills. Thanks so much. I appreciate you watching
@@OldDominionTroutBum where would I find those my friend ? Could I use a bleached peacock quil ?
Many online fly shops have them. You can google it. “Polish quills”. They are hand stripped peacock quills. I’m not sure what bleached looks like. I’ve always use this brand.
Great video! Noticed that Devin keeps the dark line up and you teach line down. Is this because the wraps are starting opposite ways?

Thanks, Brian. They are the same. The difference is stripped are the "natural" color and polish quills are dyed.
@@OldDominionTroutBum oh thank you !
What color quills do you use to get variety of colors.
I like natural, golden-olive (both with a copper bead) and Olive (with a silver bead). Thanks for watching.
Great tie...how long before you start tying do you soak the quills?
Thanks, Ryan. You just need to soak them for about 60 seconds.

Hi. What color flashabou do you like to use for the butt of this fly?
Hey Dave. Pearl is my favorite. Appreciate you watching.
Veevus 16/0 work as well? I think you've mentioned in other videos that you like the 16/0 when possible?
Hey Jeff, 16/0 Veevus works great. You can flatten that just like UTC or Uni thread.
@@OldDominionTroutBum and what color of thread do you like with the olive quills?
I use Veevus olive dun or reg olive.
What vise are you using ?
Renzetti Traveler 2000.
I noticed that most of your fly tying videos use a copper bead. Is that just coincidence or do you tie your patterns in a multitude of colors?
Hey James. Probably coincidence. I use silver a lot as well. I am a copper and silver guy for 90% of my flies. One other fly I use black on…my Honey Badger Sculpin. I also like light metallic pink.
Do you soak the quills in water first?
I do, Nathan. if you watch around the 1 min mark, I talk about what to do with the quills. Appreciate you watching.
Thanks sorry I didn’t catch that the first time. With gratitude
I was there late April and the water was really high and fast...so different now...
Which stream were you at ?
do these catch fish tho?
You bet they do!
