2022 Championship Flies - Gasolina Perdigon

- One of the most popular perdigons in Europe, this is a fly that spent a lot of time getting fished not only by Devin but many other competitors in the 2022 World Championship. While no one maybe knows exactly what the original Gasolina is, Devin breaks down the style and the many options for materials and then shows you how to tie it.

Very happy that team USA members are willing to share their patterns with us recreational fishermen. Love your video series as well as your UA-cam work
Thanks for watching. Hopefully the patterns help you out on the water.
This was a great beginners kit for a great price. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxKRURvLsu9Vvyw7gIuvt8FsApoQNCdz-1 Its given us a huge variety to test out and see what works well and what we like to use. Majority of the flies have stayed together well, but some of the rainbow warriors did unravel after catching a few blue gill. All in all, this was a great kit and are so happy with the purchase and value for money.
Good video bud. Thank you for sharing. That roller, if anyone is wondering, it is called "Fiskars Fabric cutter". Works well with carbon fiber and fiberglass matt/fabric & feather shaft flush cuts.
I love tan thread under medium flash with fluorescent orange hotspot and black wing case. Switching threads mid tie is tricky but when done right is flawless. & I use a lighter to get those thread ends tidy if needed also. Cover the tail fibers with your finger to block the flame and you’re good
Thanks Devin. I like all the options you are giving. Thanks also for Confidence Flies and videos series about nymphing.
Devin always an excellent presentation thank you for always sharing your knowledge!!!!
Thanks for watching.
Devin I love your video series. Thank you for sharing recipe for this perdigon.
Glad you've enjoyed the series. Still one more on the way.
Thank you Devin for sharing recipe for this perdigon .It’s a 🔥!
It is in the name after all :)
Very detailed instructions. Excellent camera work!
Thanks!
I appreciate that you give a bunch of variations based on tinsel and thread color. Thanks!
Hopefully they helped provide some useful examples.
One thing I do, and I am new to this so while it works I can't say it necessarily is optimal, but does cut down on the supplies you need to buy, is to use translucent opal colored tinsel over thread of the color I want. The body can be any color thread, then when wrapped in the tinsel that thread color comes through.
Thanks for the video, it does pretty well down here in Chile
Not surprising. It worked well for me in Argentina recently as well.
Nicely done. Thank you
Thanks for watching.
Ordered the materials from for you for this pattern earlier today!!
Happy tying!
I actually tue and use a nymph similar to this but use pink or purple flash and they work great in GSM and also near tellico
Just got the flash in. Time to tie a few gasolinas 😉
Will need to add this one to all the supply I just ordered from your store :)
Quick question about bead color - seems that you mostly go for the copper color. Is this based on personal success or something you feel is more appropriate for Perdigon (I have seen the dark nickel used for the olive perdigon). Anything wrong in trying a range of color like gold, silver or even black? Trying to make good use of my collection :) but always welcome advices from expert as for combo that have been working more than others. Thanks !
@@stephanebogen5411 Copper is the bead color I probably use most often and is very common among competitors. There's no reason you can't try other colors on this fly and see how it goes.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 will do - thanks a lot !
Devin excellent fly. Another option is hends perdigon tinsel. The shade I use is pb233 I believe. It’s the color that I was shown by numerous competitors and it works very well
Yes we list that as an option on the materials slide. The hard part is getting it. We order it for the shop constantly and the distributor is out of stock 90% of the time.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 I never have a issue getting it. I think I have probably 5 spools that I picked up from different shops. I use it a lot and catch a lot of fish on it
Do you use the 1/69 in version?
@@ryantherock7664 I think that’s it. Might be the next size up. I have to check the size of the spool when I get back to the house
I'm gonna try it on Chub, Bulgaria here, Vit or Osam river. I'd like to see if the nase will like it too.
killer pattern here in idaho
have you ever fished the owyhee river in the idaho/oregon border
its a blue ribbon brown trout fishery where you cant harvest brown trout so they grow big
Most effective nymph I have ever used!
Wow
How many fish do Perdigon Nymph last you I heard there one of the most durable flys and can last yeats
Great tie but i cant seem to find stock anywhere of the Hends 233
We have a pretty decent stock, at least in the fine size right now on the website and hopefully more on the way.
I was ready for "Yet Another Gasolina Video" however this was not that. Great info and color combo slide. As fly designs get smaller and ultra simple I am tempted to try a bare hook with a bead glued on. I'm sure it would catch fish and I would be very disappointed...
Troutbitten just did that actually
We've done the bead on a hook test as well and they do catch fish. With that said, there are plenty of times when it hasn't worked as well when "standard" patterns do. So I'm not likely to fill a box with beads on a hook anytime soon.
How do you like that brand of Resin! I’ll see you when you come to Albuquerque!
The UVCraft is very good. I've been using it for about a year now.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 sweet I’ll order some from your site! Thanks
Is the Gasolina mainly tied with a copper bead Devin?
Pretty much all the ones I’ve seen have been with copper. As with most patterns, I’m sure other bead colors would work well too though.
Hey man, what vice would you recommend for a beginner at this?! I'd like to "buy once, cry once" haha
The Renzetti Traveler vise we sell in the shop is a great vise to get you started and keep you happy down the road.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 Thank you so much!! I'd be buying right now but my Tacoma just threw me a curve ball last week so gotta get that handled first... $$$$ then I'll keep shopping for vices and a bobbin!! haha damn
Hello Devin - Regarding the hook, I find it confusing that for Perdigon, some are using nymph hook and slotted bead, and some are using Jig hooks. In this video, you used one of my favorite options (FullingMill Jig Force FM5125 hook). Not sure I understand the logic about using one versus the other. My rationale would be to use a jig hook for my point nymph and a nymph hook with a smaller bead as top fly. So, I ended up using a FullingMill Jig Force FM5125 hook. I really like them as they are super strong, and I really like the wide gap. I feel it gives me a compromise between the standard nymph hook and the regular jig hook because the eyelet is horizontal with the shank as a regular nymph hook but with a 45-degree angle. Greatly appreciate if you have additional guidance on this - best - Stephane
Stephane, I don't think about hooks as being hooks for perdigons versus other nymphs or as being dropper fly hooks vs point fly hooks. Given my background in competitive fly fishing, I want a hook that penetrates and holds fish throughout the fight and a hook that the point is durable, and the wire doesn't bend. At this point my two favorite hooks for smaller nymphs, given these criteria, are the Fulling Mill Jig Force Short and the Dohiku 303. That's why I have featured these hooks in my last several tutorials.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 super. Thanks a lot Devin. I will keep using my preferred hooks.
In the video, you say that a Fulling Mill Jig Force Short size 22 is actually closer to a true 18. Does that mean that a Dohiku 303 size 16 would be about the same size as the Fulling Mill?
@@alexargyros7186 look at the product descriptions in our site. We have exact measured lengths listed.
ahh yes! Just what the doctor youtube recommended.
