Just gotta say this fly caught me a 16 inch whitefish here in bend oregon. Thank you very much for teaching us, its my go to fly here on the deschutes river
Love hearing this! Glad it is working for you. Continued success to you and tight lines!
i just caught my pb brownie on this fly. 20" female on a size 14 "jack". your patterns work here in alberta very well!
Thanks Cory. If you ever find yourself in central alberta give me a shout and come have some fun on our local waters.
Love hearing this, Robert. Congrats on your PB! Thanks for letting me know and I appreciate the invite! Tight lines to you my Northern neighbor!
Hi Cory. Thanks for this video sure does work, spun some up an used it on the Farmington today Got a pile!Your the best instructor on You Tube. Thanks again!!
That is awesome, Rich! Glad the JD is working for you. And super nice of you to say! Continued success to you. Tight lines!
This fly has been so unbelievably productive that I can’t even say it any better way. My girlfriend only Euro-nymphs and caught six West Branch Delaware browns and rainbows on it in under an hour. I’ve been using it with extreme effectiveness. There’s just something about it that puts it beyond other patterns. Very easy and fun to tie also….. thanks for sharing this pattern and all your other content too!!
Love to hear it, Craig! The WB is nothing easy-congrats to your girlfriend! The JD is one of my top patterns. Glad it is working for you. Appreciate you letting me know. Thanks for watching and continued success to you!
Absolute consistency! Love your teaching method and how clean your flies are. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us all.
Thank you, Jimmie! Appreciate it! Happy to help. Tight lines and thanks for watching!
Thank you Cory !
All of the flies from your tutorials work great for me . I have no doubt this one will too . Thanks again!
Appreciate it, Sead! Glad to hear it! I feel confident this one will work as well. Tight lines!
This motivated me to start my winter tying season. My first one had too little CDC but after I adjusted it was smooth sailing.
Glad it did, Thomas. It will be a good one for your box. Good luck with the JD!
Whiskey in Utah for brown trout and almost for cutts. Love the dubbing inside the loop to help the CDC stay put. This is now how I do most of the CDC flies. Another great video with great techniques. Hats off and tight lines.
Awesome to hear, Rob! Glad it is working for you. Thanks so much for watching and continued success to you. Tight lines to you, as well.
Oooo! I really like this bug! The GSP tip is a great one. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice fly Cory.. I love the ones you come up with on your own that just catch fish!!!
Awesome tying video as usual Cory. Been waiting on this video. Definitely know what I’ll be tying once I’m off the plane. Tight lines!!
Appreciate it, Brett! Good luck with it. It's going to work for you. Tight lines as well!
thanks so much for this one. I love your videos and how you address consistency. I am fortunate that i live in western Montana so i get to drown some of your fly patterns in some very beautiful rivers.
Glad you like it, Dennis. It is one of my top flies. You are fortunate to live in MT...a great place to drown some flies. I love it out there. Heaven on earth!!
Great looking fly. Thanks. And thanks for the shoutout about Troutbitten. I just started podcasts and found his. Fun group of guys that really share as you do. I appreciate it.
Thanks, Garry! Dom with Troutbitten knows his stuff. Thanks so much for watching and tight lines.
Awesome Cory, another great bug. Will tie some up and give it a go! Keep up the great videos. Love your channel 💪🏼
Thanks so much! It’s going to be a good one for you. Appreciate you watching and tight lines to you!
Another great fly to add to my arsenal Cory ! Putting together a material list , and I’m sure it going to put plenty of bends in the rod , as all your other patterns do ! Let’s go 🤛
It will be a good one for you, Tony! Good luck with it and let me know how you do. Thanks for watching. my friend. Let's GO!
Awesome pattern man. Tied some up and had serious success on it. Caught wild fish and a big hold over on yellow creek and it was a blast. Thank you for sharing this pattern. Made my weekend.
Thank you, Rusty Drift. Glad it worked for you! Definitely one of my top patterns. Continued success to you and tight lines!
Thanks for sharing this fly!! Crushing it this spring in Colorado with it. Also used it in Nw Wyoming last fall. This with a Lance Egan thread frenchie gets it done!!
Love hearing it, Craig! The JD is one of my go-to bugs. Continued success to you this year!
I tye and fish these type of nymphs in various versions. I like the way you did the ribbing. That was cool.
I tied up a few of these in different sizes over the summer when I first started tying, I finally was able to get out and do some fly fishing this week up in Oklahoma (Im in Texas) these flies really made my trip so enjoyable I had a moment one evening where it was just one rainbow after another on one of these tied in a size 18! Love it, thank you for sharing!
Love to hear it, JD! Congrats to you on such a great trip. Thanks for letting me know. Continued tight lines!
Great channel your tips have brought my nymphing to a new level here in Scotland. Not many rainbows but plenty of native hard fighting trout. Perdigons are a class act in my book.
Thank you, William! I know about your hard fighting Scottish trout. Hope to fish there some day. It is on my list. I love those perdigons as well. Cheers to you and I appreciate you watching!
Another great pattern Cory. I tie a similar fly and after I color the thread for the rib, I twist it really tight, this gives a 3D rib. I just don't put too much pressure on it as I rib it up the hook. Thanks for the tying tips. I always learn something helpful from your videos.
Thanks, Frank. These are fun ties and yours sounds like a great fly. Appreciate you watching and tight lines, my friend!
Another great slim pattern Cory ... just looks so right ....thanks for your tips re: how to consistently reproduce a tying again and again ( all the flies I tie for myself and friends are a bit different which I call my ‘unique’ range - no 2 flies ever the same 😂)...hope Jack Daniels send you a nice bottle to go with your cigar 😊 thanks for sharing as ever
Thank you , TK! Sometimes is good to be "unique"!! Not expecting any royalties from Jack Daniel's , but I like the sound of a glass of it and a good cigar! Tight lines my friend!
Great video Cory haven't seen you fishing much, super fly tying tutorial
Thank you, Kim. Appreciate it! I’ve been out-just no filming. More vids will be coming!
So cool when one of your inventions works well - will give it a try - thanks !
This bug and variations of it are about as good of a tight line jig fly as it gets. Serious kudos.
Appreciate it! It has been an awesome producer for me. I fish it a ton. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Tight lines to you.
Thanks Cory! I’ll be spinning some of these up for a trip to the beaverkill next weekend. Praying for a whiskey
That's awesome, Nate. Always a chance for a whiskey in the Beaverkill! Good luck and appreciate you watching!
Cory, I tie most of the flies you either introduce or refine to us viewers. I gotta say, this one has a really nice aesthetic to it, which I didn't fully realize until I finished it in my vise. I'm hoping to put it into use later in June on the upper Connecticut head waters in NH. Thanks!
Thanks, Scott. Glad you like this one. I feel confident it’s going to put some in the net for you.
On a side note…the Upper CT is about and hour away from the Magalloway River in Maine. Trust me, it’s worth the hour drive. Big Brookies and Landlocked Salmon. Tight lines!
Another great video Corey! Can’t wait to try it! Hopefully it works as good as the stone pony and honey badger did for me? I had great success with those two patterns! Keep the great videos coming!!!
Thanks Sean! Glad the Stone Pony and Honey Badger are working for you. 2 of my favs. I feel like you are going to like the JD as well. Good luck with it and tight lines!
Thanks for this pattern! I have been making a lot of flash-ridden flies for the Tongariro River lately and was looking for inspiration for a more sombre pattern for those tricky fish. This is just what I was looking for. Regards from down-under in NZ.
Glad you like it, John. I know it will work for your NZ trout! Good luck to you and tight lines, mate!
Great fly! Fished it yesterday on the Esopus with a lot of success. Well done.
Glad it worked for you, Big Apple. it is one of my go-to's! Love the Esopus btw....
Whipped up a few of your JD’s, but modified the rib by doubling up thread prior (colored rusty brown) and spinning CW with Cal Bird tool. Gives abdomen a little more definition, but still sleek after UV. Also used Brown Tungsten bead instead of Copper. These minor changes better match aquatic insects in my home stream. Thanks for great instructions!!
Glad you whipped some up, Enzo! I'm sure your spin on it will put them in the net. Appreciate you watching and good luck with the JD!
Thanks Corey. This explains why I’ve never caught a fish on my Canadian Mist fly.
Haha! You have to fish farther north for that fly to work! Appreciate you watching.
Great Tie. I hadn't thought to incorporate the CDC with the dubbing to reduce bulk. So obvious really though. I will tie a few of these.
Thanks for sharing
Tightlines
Craig
Thanks, Craig. It's been a great bug for me and I'm sure it will be for you, as well. Good luck to you. Tight lines!
Darn nice pattern. Very well explained and spun up a few with no fuss! Test it on a stream tmoz, a stretch where I know there is a fussy whiskey lurking!
Excellent tie been waiting to see that since i ran into you in pa
Thanks so much, Bob. Hope to see you out again and trade some patterns.
Great looking fly with a even better explanation. Now the only thing I’m missing is some Broken Heels!
Really appreciate it! Can't drink and tie-every fly steadily gets worse with each drink!
I like this fly! It's a quick and fun fly to tie! Hope it works well out here on the West Coast!
so cool,, Dominic trout bitten is a favorite here on youtube.. Corey wonderful ties,, i will be tying some JD whiskies.. hoping to soon trip ny upper west branch and east branch Delaware..so far petty good
favorite daily reports i like reading daily flows stream conditions @ Dettes flies /West branch anglers/ and Delaware River club online.. Hoping eventually get to my camp on the upper Eb take do circles all around wb too hope no major flooding.. focused on all regional county weather radar forecasts keeping fingers crossed for pleasant moderate weather,, take the rain over hot drought conditions any season.. the heat though not a fan of myself.. gl ty enjoy tight lines!
Everyone must be tying your Jack Daniels pattern, I can't find a single damn spool of Danville 6/0 beige anywhere lol! Love the vids, I've been learning so much from you over the past few months and I can't wait to try this pattern out. Going to have to substitute the thread for a similar color.
www.slideinn.com/product/danville-flymaster-waxed-thread-6-0/
Haha….Kelly Galloup has it. Appreciate you watching. Glad the videos are helpful.
@@OldDominionTroutBum oh nice, thank you for the link! I’m definitely going to pick some up. Tight lines and keep up the great content!
Been tying these up, in grey and they work amazing on the stupid Provo River.
If you are catching them on the Provo-its a good one! Appreciate you watching!
Hey Cory! Thanks for the tying instruction. I’ll have to try some of these!
I'd love you get my hands on some of these. I dont tie my self but these are a great looking nymph.
Hey Shaun, You can find some tiers on Etsy that sell them. Here is one:
www.etsy.com/shop/ForrestersFlies
It's a fish catcher! Good luck to you and thanks for watching.
Yippee!! Been waiting for this one. Have to confess I tied some up based on your description on the Little J video and have done well with them, but this will inspire me to make more and fish them more often. I am totally convinced that nymphs with sparse CDC hackle are dynamite. I have great success with flies like the Blowtorch (both the hot orange and the bright green butt versions) and Soft Hackle Carrot. This is much less flashy than those. One of my new favorites is just a hares ear body, CDC hackle, and a little collar of either dark ice dub like fibers (like your Hands 46 in this video), or for even less flash, just a wrap or two more of hares ear behind the copper bead. Call it a "CDC soft hackle Walts Worm" if you like. It is very similar to the CDC soft hackle hares ear that was one of your first videos ever on UA-cam, just not with the pink bead. Like you, I tend to be pretty anal about getting exactly the recommended materials for someone's special pattern, so, of course, the Hends Spectra Dubbing in #46 you use for this fly is not in stock anywhere in the US that I can find. There are other very good "nearly black" with some greenish highlights dubbings out there that I suspect will work just fine. I personally believe it is the contrast of the dark dubbing right behind the brighter bead that makes the difference. Keep 'em coming, Cory. As others have said, yours are some of the best tightline videos out there, and your explanations are always terrific.
Really appreciate your comment! Glad you have been tying them and doing well!
Funny-I tie a soft hackle Walt's as well. Add a little CDC to a pattern can make it come alive.
If you can't find the Hends, any subtle blackish/peacock dubbing will work for sure.
Thanks for the kind words and I appreciate you watching. Tight lines!
really nice tie. Great job not overdoing the dubbing or CDC collar.
Thanks, Martin. Appreciate you watching. Hope you tie some up. It's a good one.
Such a cool looking fly. Love how you came up with the name. On a side note. In one of your videos you had mentioned briefly that your t & t 10 9 2 wt worked well with an under weighted dry fly line. I'm guessing a 1 wt line. I just picked up that rod and was looking for some dry fly options for it. Thanks Cory for always answering everyones questions here. Hope you have a great fishing season.
Thank you, Bill. The 10 9 2wt easily casts a 1wt line or a 2wt. If you get a 2wt line, make sure it is a finesse/delicate/technical type-a true 2wt. Most lines today are overweighted, so if you find a finesse line-they work great.
Good luck to you!
First, really love and appreciate your videos. Second, I can't believe how good you are at casting, I sit and watch your videos over and over just searching for little nuggets of information. Third, it seems that you only tie nymphs on jig hooks as far as I can tell, I prefer them myself, is there any case you don't? Last, I think it would be cool to see a video of your fly box/boxes. Keep up the strong work!
Appreciate it, Cody! Nice of you to say!
I do use a ton of jig hooks, but I also like traditional straight nymph hooks like the Hanak 230. A lot of times I’ll tie perdigons with them and use a slotted bead on it. Kinda of giving homage to how the Spanish tie them - it is a nice look. I also love the Dohiku 644-it’s a curved caddis style hook. I use a lot of inverted beads with that hook.
Thanks for the idea-always looking for them. Thanks so much for watching and tight lines to you!
Remarkably similar to a fly pattern known throughout the UK as a yellow owl which originated as a wet fly on Loch Leven. Nice bug.
I've been watching your tutorials for sometime, and I immediately ordered the thread to try and replicate these flies. They turned out fantastic and look great! They are also a very fun flie to tie. Thank you so much for providing a detailed and easy step by step process. I went out the following morning to try these flies out, and I immediately caught my personal best, a twenty inch rainbow. The Truckee River can be a finicky river to fish, but boy oh boy did this fly shine that morning. I am relatively new to Euro Nymphing, so this was a huge win for me. I will always have few of these in my fly box, thanks again!
That is awesome, Matthew! Love hearing that...Congrats on you personal best! Here's to many more. Glad the JD earned its way into your box. Thanks for watching and tight lines to you!
Fished this fly today. I broke a few off on “whiskeys”. A great fly. back to the bench
It is a good one, James! Now you got to get back at it-you know where they live!
I did. I was up early and out before the crowds and the heat. Happy I tied a few last night. I stopped counting after 20. Question for you Cory, when you are fishing two flies on average how far apart are you bugs ?
@@jamesnichols8893 Fantastic day, James!
When I fish 2 flies they are normally 18-24" apart. 20" is a great average.
I definitely need to try this fly! 🤩
I just need to find a similar thread for the, as this is not sold where I live (in Italy) 😅
It’s one of my top flies, Manuel. You can use UTC 70 in tan. It’s a pretty good substitute. Salute!
@@OldDominionTroutBum This is really good news since it is exactly what I ordered yesterday. 😁
Thank you so much, I can't wait to try it!
Very very interesting tie. I like it!! I have a favorite jig nymph that is simple. It’s a thread body. It’s one that works well on Stillwater’s and streams for pressured trout. It too is a copper bead, always on this one. I use utc 70d In hopper yellow and Coq de Leon tails. I tie it with a very small orange collar and without a collar. Once I apply uv resin, it too darkens the thread. This jig nymph imitates our mayfly crawlers really well in my area. After watching this video, I’m going to hackle my pattern just as you have. I think it will be a benefit to my pattern at times. Thanks for this video, I always seem to learn something from your videos.
Thanks, Chadd! Amazing what a little CDC can do for a pattern. Appreciate you watching and hope you are getting at it this spring. Tight lines!
love watching your videos - am in Wales in th Uk and have tied a few of them up and had good success with them - I love the simplicity of your patterns and I think thats a key aspect of tying to catch wild brownies-have you tried these in any other bead colour and can I ask which colour you feel is always best?
Thank you, Wayne. Love hearing that they are working on your Welsh brownies!
I do tie it in an Olive for BWOs (using Danville 6/0 light olive), Dun CDC and a silver bead.
That being said-the way I tie it in the video is my favorite. I turn to it a lot in clear, pressured streams (sunny days). A copper bead has always been my go-to in these conditions.
Hope this helps. Cheers.
Hi Cory, hope u r well…love this pattern…you’ve really helped my nymph bodies tying consistency…may I ask which UV lamp you are using these days …I’m using Solarez bone dry resin with a laser pen torch which seems to smoke it with fumes …maybe I need to use to the laser pen in short bursts rather than a 10 sec ish single blast …thanks as ever, all the best
Hey TK- glad you love the pattern. It is one of my go-to's for sure.
I use a Raidzap Pro 365. It is rechargeable and does a great job. It does sound like your light is frying it too quick. I would definitely try the short bursts. Or of course, buy more fly-tying stuff, because that's what we do!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks for your great advice Cory which my wife agrees with :)..I will of course be buying a new UV rechargeable lamp like yours so that I know I'm grilling correctly like a pro :)...all the best amigo
Very nice looking fly and great job presenting. Just wondering; do you prefer the thread quill on this fly to a the natural quill used on your quilldigon?
Thanks, Donald. Appreciate it! I prefer the thread body because of the color and the ease of tying it. (You can also tie the Quilldigon this way). Actual peacock quills will work great on this fly, but they are becoming harder and harder to get in the states. Not sure why, but I have noticed it.
Thank you; please keep these things coming. Extremely relevant subjects, well presented….I just simply enjoy them.
Is that red nail polish or a reflection on the beads in the thumbnail? Tied a few of these and loving them so far, thanks for sharing!
Really weird. Have no idea what is going on. It just showed up like that today. Must be a UA-cam glitch. But it definitely shouldn’t be there! Glad you are liking the JD!
I think you’ve caused a run on this color, lol! Can’t seem to find beige right now. Rookie question…do you use waxed or unwaxed? I’ve seen it both ways. Great stuff man. I’ve been euro style for a few years but you’ve inspired me to go micro and now begin tying bugs. Really see the value in creating my own ammo and keeping it thin! Thanks for what you do…you’re a true asset to the sport!
Hey David. Haha! The Danville 6/0 is in waxed. If you can't find beige, Tan UTC 70 is a decent alternative. Appreciate you watching the channel and glad it has been helpful to you. Good luck to you and thanks for the comment!
Do you fish nymphs tied on jig hooks as the top fly or only as the dropper? I never fish jig nymphs as the top fly, but there are much more beautiful jig patterns than patterns tied on shrimp hooks and I probably get it wrong.
Anton, I fish jigs hooks on the dropper and on the bottom (or just single fly). There are no written rules. I just like how they invert the fly, so you get better hook penetration in the top lip. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks! I was confused which one is called “dropper”. In dry-dropper rig, nymph is a dropper.
Today, I was lucky to catch 2 trout at once on both nymphs. I thought that I hooked one and the second was following it.
Do you think a copper bead offers less flash than other beads? I know you say you like flies without a lot of flash or hot spots. But doesn’t the copper bead also show flash in the water?
Brian, I do think it offers less. At first it does have shine but after you fish it - it will dull down fairly quick. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@OldDominionTroutBum I’ll definitely tie some of these up and give them a try.
Great pattern @OldDominionTroutBum ! Careful calling Jack Daniel's a 'whiskey' however, some folks across the pond might beg to differ! 🤓 I tied a few of these tonight ( with a couple drams of whisky ) and really had to scour my materials to get a thread that didn't get too dark after the resin. Isn't Jack Daniel's a Bourbon? Thanks for the pattern! 👍👍
Thanks, Mike! Haha....trust me, JD is a good ole Tennessee Whiskey. Glad you tied a few up (while having a sip!). I'm sure they are going to be good to you. Tight lines!
Can’t find the thread recommend. Would semperfly beige work?
Nathan, you need the Danville 6/0 for the body. I did a quick google and it’s available at a number of places. The semperfli color for the dubbing loop doesn’t matter. Appreciate you watching.
Try nano silk. It does stretch and holds its color better when using UV resin.
What is the # for the thread? It looks like the orange color on my screen???
I'm drunk with excitement, Cory. Now, if you could tell me what brand/model hook you prefer, I'm off.
Haha. That’s awesome, Alex. Appreciate it! This hook is a Hanak 400. I really like that hook. I also like the Hanak 230 (a straight nymph hook, I’ll use slotted and inverted beads w it), the Dohiku 644 (I use inverted beads with it) and the 302SP. I use these hooks most often. The 302 I like because you can oversize the bead on smaller sizes. Appreciate you watching.
Why always copper?
You can use silver and it works-but for a stealthy/drab appearance, I prefer copper.
@@OldDominionTroutBum That is what I was thinking. I have started using some more matte brown/olive/black beads. Helps with the pressured fish in NJ/PA. Tightlines.
I tied a bunch of these up and used them on a trout stream here in Missouri. The Jack Daniels performed the best. There is a forum for the particular stream I was on so I posted a report of my day and I said " make sure you have a lot of Jack Daniels with you. I mean A LOT!". 😃
Just tried this fly over the weekend in the PNW, and had massive success with it. The fish wouldn’t take anything: perdigons, hare’s ears, pheasant tails, frenchies, blowtorches… I tried it all. Then popped this one on, and the fish hammered it nonstop. The fast sinking body and robust soft hackle are a strong combination. Great pattern.
So awesome to hear, Joe! Glad you spun some up. Continued success to you. Appreciate you watching!
