  • What's up everyone,
In this entry I talk about my first couple tries learning to fly the wing and also trying to figure out down wind SUP. When I first started foiling I really had no interest in either but over the past couple months I have slowly been mentally preparing myself to learn. Hence embracing the suck of almost learning something from scratch again. Winging appeals to me because I hate pumping into harsh wind so figured learn how to use it as a chair lift. Down wind is just such a meditative journey from what I have been told. Using your knowledge of how the ocean works but also the ultimate flow states I have heard about.

Only one year, oh that's good news! I'm 65 and going to foil classes this week, the game changer for the answer to crowds. Subbed

Learning to wing is so exhausting i totally agree

💯 but I when I did get on foil it was epic. I just didn't know what to do next haha

agreed on winging: everything hurts after a sesh. exhausting!

I thought there was something wrong with me at first. I would be completely exhausted from head to toe after a session. Too tired to pack up without laying on the beach for awhile. Gets easier. Practicing behind a boat till you can learn to relax on foil helps.

Second that to winging. It’s frustrating at first, but each time you go out you’ll figure out small things of what not to do and then you’ll start figuring out what to do and put it all together…just like you progressed with foiling. You can do it!
Been following you since episode 1. 👊🏼

Absolutely and it is so fun once it’s on foil which I have only done once or twice. So excited to learn more and more every session. Thanks for the support ✌️

So funny because I can’t surf, prone or SUP foil. But I can wing all day. The wing helps me keep my balance and gives me the power to catch up to waves. As soon as I drop my wing, I feel like a duck out of water.

I can definitely see how the wing works but I just need to figure it out. When I get it I get it. But when I am unsure of where it should be my body just tries to self correct which usually leads to a fall

Wow, I reckon winging is easy and SUP is hard (and I am a good SUP surfer) I cant wait to get my DW board to go light wind winging and DW winging this summer

I personally am not picking it up to quick to say the least haha. But I am hoping to figure it out soon. It is insanely fun once on foil. It’s just figuring out how to use the wind to your advantage

With your surf foiling background, you will get the wing foiling very fast.
I will try to SUP foiling and may try prone after that. I feel to pop-up on foil board is very scary.

For sure it's going to take some time. I feel pretty comfortable being on foil itself. It's just hanging onto a wing too that freaks me out.

As anther follower has suggested you look under powered on your Wing. My 2 cents, WingFoil pumping you want to do a circular motion, pulling down at the Wing high point (to raise the board). When the board starts to raise it will have a tendency to hook upwind. At this point you need some front foot big toe pressuure to force the board slightly downwind. Once the foil is stable you can start heading upwind. Try it :)

I am definitely going to be giving that a try. I appreciate the feedback and advice

Yep the struggle is real (winging) , but so rewarding.
Looking at those conditions you seem to be under powered with the 4.2 In my humble opinion get a 6m for 15 knots winds make it easier. But like anything it's just time on board 🤙thanks for the vids

100 percent. I got the middle size wing because I was nervous about getting something so big to learn. I am starting to realize like foils I will need a few different size wings to allow me to get the most out of my wing sessions

Definitely looks like you need more power. It’s night and day difference when learning.

The wing challenge is real! I wonder how hard it is for people with a wind background and no surf background to learn to prone foil.

I am sure it’s about even. But I will say when I was on foil with the wing it felt insane.

Competent big wave windsurfer. I found that winging on foil was a no brainer, practically no learning curve. Put harness lines on wing and I can do it all day long. However I can't do pump foiling at all. Having the complete opposite problem..

    • @theliftjournal
      @theliftjournal  10 місяців тому

@@esrandl funny that you say that because while on the wing my nature was to try to pump even as I was powered up.

I windsurf and kite but neither with a foil. It took me 9 sessions to stay on foil out and back. Still kicked my ass at first. Almost gave up.

At 7:18 you are holding the wrong handle, put your wing at the nose of your board ( so in front of you) and use the first handle on the below central bladder and the last handle, the handle you are holding on the video is for free fly and flaging the wing , the wing must be above and in front of you at the start when you are not flying .
Maybe the pinion is too powerfull , some wing has totaly different caracteristic some are easier then other , some are race oriented and pull a lot and destroy you takuma wing ride , some are gentle neutral like the fone strike v2 or the swing v3 , takoon v2 , gong plus and neutra etc.
The difficulty is the lateral stability of your dw wing board as well is not the easiest even some experienced people are getting trouble with it, best shape are tomo like , fone wing rocket, north seek you need something rectangular , i dont know the sunova range but there easier shape for sure than the casey aviator.
Dw is a trend but there are a lot of lie about the ease of access as usual, it’s hard !
I listed my progression of winging in a begginer wingfoiling progression on my channel i give some pointer during my progression too, it’s could help you to check those, i’ve seen some similarity with what i was doing wrong when i started but you will be way more advanced then me with the fly part .

I am going to check out your channel. I appreciate the info. Still working on it but it is really tough.

I'm the opposite. I can wing all day but I can't prone foil to save my life. The popup is impossible for me.
Wing progression should be fast once you get up and build the muscles needed.

The paddle you are using is too long and the blade is too big for foiling or sup surfing. You need quick cadence paddle strokes for these sports, not big powerful strokes which is what your paddle is designed for. Just my 2 cents worth. Learn to read the wind and it will help.
