Friedrich Gulda was a true giant among pianists of the 20th century. He made Mozart come alive, more than anyone else I have heard. If there are very few dynamic indications in the scores, it doesn't mean that the music has to be played in the usual boring way without any expression. In Mozart's days, all matters of interpretation were left to the performer. Gulda understands this, and Mozart would rejoice if he were alive.
Totally agree.
One of the best pianists.
Nessuno come lui.
I love the way you play...listening over and over with hart full of gratitude: Thank you Mr Goulda
I love everything Gulda played. Among others his dotted rhythm is out of this world. Thanks God for this apostel of him!

Thank you!
I never warmed to Gulda but then I love Mozart. Now after listening to many many recordings, I couldn't not listen to Gulda. What a total fool I have been! Gulda is by far the best at Mozart. He says to hell with the boring, restricted, pseudo clever, dull interpretations of Barenboim and the like and plays the emotion in the music just like I'm sure Mozart would have blasted it out. Bloody brilliant when forte and virtuoso when the music takes it there. He has such capacity in his fingers to present a phrase of gorgeousness. Can't listen to other recordings of these sonatas now, I just get bored - because I need that extra punch of fierce beauty and singingly expressive joy that Gulda seems to jam into every part of the pieces. Bravo! I now love Gulda.
Mozart with a punch!
rhodesdarcy
Probably his mind "jazzy"...
I also like Gulda. His main three composers were Beethoven, Bach and Mozart! He plays them alll wonderfully.
Very well said about Barenboim's Mozart play ... (I couldn't express it any better!)
For my taste at Mozart's piano sonatas Christoph Eschenbach has set the "standard". You can also listen to Mitsuko Uschida (another "Mozart specialist").
However the sonata K.311 is best played IMHO by Krystian Zimerman (just listen to the 2nd movement)! Unfortunately Zimerman withdrew his 1978 DGG recording (why you should ask Zimerman)! *too sad*
rhodesdarcy thank you so much !!!
most creative way of playing Mozart i heard
One my favorite pianiste.Anticonformista e talentuosissimo.🌹
An amazing pianist who was highly acclaimed for both classical and jazz piano performance. What a privilege
to be able to hear his beautiful playing given he is no longer with us. Thankyou for making this possible.
i love his jazzy approach playing Mozart and Beethoven
I love this wonderful artist. He is real human not artificial like the rest of the "great virtuoses"...
Not artificial like... cofcofcofLang cofcof Lang...
Hahaha
I would actually say the opposite, Brendel is much warmer and emotional
@@federicorubionavarro3399 of course everyone has his feelings and opinion, but I still think Mozart played beautifully by him. better than Brendel would ... :) in my opinion
@@federicorubionavarro3399 ua-cam.com/video/yF5RGk9MNts/v-deo.html
If you like Schubert listen to this Schubert Valses Nobles ... Brendel was my inspiration here:)! and subscribe to my channel despite our differences of opinion :)
Listening to this concert by Gulda has single-handedly made me want to learn 3 Mozart pieces. (Eb sonata K282, Cm Fantasy K475 and F sonata K332) Absolutely fantastic performances. Listening to many other Mozart recordings is like night and day.
There are some people so good that you think it is like an alien came to earth and showed us what is possible on an instrument. For example, Bill Watrous on trombone and this amazing man on piano.
+Thomas Gill Very well said!
Yes, there are several outstanding pianists like Friedrich Gulda (for Beethoven, Bach and Mozart). His other recordings are also worth listening.
The sonata K.311 IMHO was best played by Krystian Zimerman (just listen to this marvel 2nd movement). I was blown away! (Unfortunately Zimerman withdrew his 1978 DGG recording - why only Zimerman can tell!) *too sad*
@@MusikPiratCHGrand maestro Gulda was the undisputred pianist in every composer bueven more to German/Austrian composers, he could understand not to say feel better than anyone else the huge passion and depth of German classical music...God bless his beautiful soul🙏
@@KL-hq5yx In an interview with Joachim Kaiser (I saw once on UA-cam) Friedrich Gulda told: "I only showed what I can play!"
Maybe it's this approach that made you feel that Gulda understood what he is playing ...
Though some recordings I prefer Zimerman (K.311) or Dinu Lipatti (K.310)! :D Music is very individual: what you like I probably dislike and vice versa ... ;)
Absolutely Fabulous, your right, he is One with what he plays
Amazing!
This is celestial music, which was born in 18th century Europe.
Gulda his approach is absolutely Dyonisian. He showed us other facets not only about WAM. Liste his Well tempered klavier 1 and 2 from 1971 and 1972.
where do find the Dionysian here, if I may ask.
Late Fr. Gulda, a musician who does not just make music, he loves playing it in the purest sense of playing: "expressing the joy he feels". For this "addiction'" of his in the "playing mode", I think he is much closer to Mozart's music charachter than other great performers who approach Mozart's music more formally, being "haunted" by the brilliance and seriousness of Beethoven.
Tout simplement superbe!!! Merci
i have discovered him after daniel barenboim and mitsuko and jukonova they are so touching to my heart for mozart i can't compare and i never know who play like mozart because we are not born in 1756 the way they play so much understanding in which way the notes were transported
mozart must be some kind like religions , the world will not have war
thank you gulda.
Impresionante Gulda, gracias!!

GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!
Gracias maestro!!!
Absolute Maestro
Beautifully played.
Maravilloso!
You're one of the greatest pianists around! Wonderful, impressive, excellent performance thank you Friedrich Gulda! I wished I could play that good. You concentrated so much!
He's dead.
What an Amazing player
Thanks to Gulda I liked this early D-maj sonata for the first time. Before I considered it as one of those productions where Mozart just fulfilled his duty. The F maj KV 332 is one of the great masterpieces and Gulda uses his great technique to deliver his exitement to the listeners - specially in the very fast 3. mov. .
:) D'accord.
Fascinating! Congrats. Thanks for posting this beauty recorded.
Wonderful!!
I want to play piano like that.

What comes to my mind is forceful yet controlled. It couldn't be louder or faster, yet I feel it captures a very valid concept of Mozart. My second thought is that this is Mozart in the style of Beethoven, as much as one can get away with it.
¡Maestro!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Satz verstanden?
Ah, K. 311-II-Andante con espressione-angelic tune, thank you for posting.

Thanks!
Crisp, clean performance; Gulda has lots of power in reserve that's not needed for Mozart..
Martha brought him to my attention; he took it from there.
Beyond words!
Masterful
El mejor intérprete de Mozart. ¡¡Fantástico!!
And you haven't heard Gulda play Beethoven yet! Try!
Mozart incarnated!
40:57 only Gulda amazing artista.
I like this music

I have a thing for great jazz heads going for Mozart (see Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea too).
Musik als Muttersprache, und dazu eine kräftige..
❤️
what did he say after K.332 second movement?
he knows what Mozart had in mind
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
😊❤❤❤❤❤
Great! What does he say at 32:20???
So etwas herrliches von einer Musik.
Good gob!!
Last movement of 332: I appreciate his liveliness and driving energy, but he slams alot and doesn't delve into lyricism or pitch sensitivity much of the time. Mozart was not merely writing motoric music and he certain had an interest in singing and lyricism, or he would if he had the expressive pianos we have today. Fast doesn't need to mean non-lyrical, equal sounding notes. We have the equipment. We should use it.
That being said, I prefer lively energy to tame prettiness.
So for that (and don't forget I'm talking about last movement of Kv 332) thank you.
Not half as much "slamming" as other virtuosi and students who attempt to play this great Finale on a modern concert grand! The whole movement feels like a storm of sudden inspiration. Allegro assai means very fast, of course. It's a pre-Beethovenian masterpiece; music ahead of its time in terms of brilliance and drama. There ARE lyrical passages (not many) which Gulda delivers with adequate contrast. Always fun to read negative comments about one of the much loved Austrian pianists. Why don't you write some more.... it's a free world, and we're allowed to disagree :) Does anybody know if Gulda ever recorded something on a 19th century Hammerklavier?

Gulda en Mozart : een openbaring. 🤩😂😬

I still need to try harder .

good :)

Tiring listening as there isn’t much light and shade here - Gouda’s studio and live earlier readings are finer. Uchida is consistently more tensile yet nuanced.

What year was this? Terrible Mozart playing snd the pianism is easily out done at any local competition. Eschenbach,Haebler above all. Barenboim so msny others really give us this music as it can be. The finale is better in spirit but again rough, like someone hacking at trees, but his playing still is outta control
LOL
You must be a very boring person
Is it the microphone that makes everything sound mezzo forte? My memory of hearing Gulda in the concert hall late in his career is of a pianist who had become tired of the repertoire. Nor was he able to make the piano sing. The D major Sonata is OK, but rushed and rather disengaged.
This is glib. The pianism is lazy nothing like his playing in his serious 20s,30s. Dull touch often, not colorlous but no style or bad Mozart style. Hear Haebler impossible delicacy . This is roughshod. Painful listening. His Burleske dhows him at his height.
We see where Argerich's habits come from. It's like a photocopy.
